Mindshare Pakistan takes home Top Honors at Campaign Asia ‘Agency of the Year’ Awards

South Asia ‘Agency of the Year’ awards was held in Mumbai on 4th December, recognizing the best individual and agency talent across South Asia in the industry.

The award recognized top achievers across the creative, media and activations industry spectrum.

Representing the Pakistani contingent, Mindshare Pakistan received the top award, as the Gold Award winner of the Pakistani Media Agency of the Year.

Innovative processes initiated and strong yearly results pushed Mindshare above its rivals as a deserving winner of the category.

Mindshare Pakistan, a subsidiary of Group M Pakistan, and owned by the Global WPP network, formally announced its operations in Pakistan back in 1999. With an elaborate and wide array of global and local clients, Mindshare is the biggest Media Agency of Pakistan.

The agency had more to celebrate later in the night, as Mindshare South Asia won the Gold in the South Asia Agency of the Year award, capping a successful year for the regional and local agencies.

Among the individual awards, the South Asia Young Achiever Award featured two aspiring female Pakistanis claiming the category as Gold and Silver Award Winners.

Sanober Ali Shah (Gold) and Wardia Ather (Silver), just in their mid-20s, were stepping up to positions of leadership at Mindshare Pakistan and became instrumental in executing key media campaigns and leading process reformations through the year, contributing the to the agency’s successes during that time.

However, Mindshare Pakistan’s female talent excelling isn’t a new phenomenon, with Fatima Khalid, who led the Pepsi Co. team at Mindshare, being recognized in Campaign Asia “40 Women to Watch under 40” just earlier this year.

It is truly heartening to see both Young Achievers coming in from Mindshare Pakistan. We feel proud to have won Gold in Agency of the Year with Mindshare Pakistan, and silver with Maxus. It is humbling to have these honors making their way to the GroupM trophy cabinet.

An Evening to Discuss #DigitalPakistan

With the internet becoming a common commodity in Pakistan, a number of private sector companies in the country are aiming to digitalize. This will allow their customers to thrive in a digital economy.

Over the years, brands have launched various projects to promote digital innovation however most appear nothing more than promotional stunts.

 

If truth be told, only a handful of these companies are actually doing their utmost to support Pakistan’s Vision 2025 – the action plan to make the nation amongst the top 25 economies of the world.

One such brand is Jazz, which has become the government’s key stakeholder in the accomplishment of this goal through a myriad of digital solutions.

Being the country’s largest telecommunication brand that connects every 4th Pakistani to the world, Jazz has the resources to bridge the prevalent digital divide.

The recently appointed Head of Corporate Communications and Sustainability, Aisha Sarwari, hosted a grand dinner in Karachi on behalf of Jazz to inform and educate regarding this facility.

The evening celebrated the mobile operator’s achievements and discussed a way forward in implementing the right digital policies for the benefit of the masses and industries.

Amongst the guests were the likes of Kamal Siddiqui, Director of Center for Excellence in Journalism and Miftah Ismail, economist, and politician.

The evening started with an engaging ‘Pulse Check’ activity, where the guests with were provided digital clickers and asked a series of questions to decipher their understanding of Jazz and its ecosystem.

In the end, it was clear, that most guests knew about Jazz’s sustainability initiatives and a range of services on offer.

Following this interesting session, Aisha Sarwari took to the stage and invited Ali Mandviwalla, Managing Partner – Synergy Group; Rabia Garib, co-founder – ToffeTV; Jehan Ara, member PM’s taskforce on IT & Telecom and president – Nest I/O; Leon Menezes. Professor of Practice at Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, George Fulton, journalist and communicator; and Afia Salam, a journalist for a panel discussion.

The insightful discussion revolved around the challenges of monetizing high-value content; creating consistent policy regimes for a Digital Pakistan and taking the internet to communities on the other side of the digital divide.

Following the panel discussion, two students from Islamabad Model School for Girls were invited on stage to talk about how the Jazz Smart School programme. The initiative has led to an increase in active learning through the use of digital tools.

The evening closed with a networking dinner, where guests got to discuss ways in which they all can play a part with Jazz, in leading the country forward in an increasingly digital economy.

Pak Suzuki Tax Relief Opposed by International Automotive Brands

New entrants in Pakistan’s automobile industry have severely resisted the government’s willingness to allow Pak Suzuki tax exemptions under the auto policy (2016-2021).

After introducing the new auto policy, French automobile manufacturer Renault and South Korean companies like Kia and Hyundai, have announced their interest in setting up vehicle assembly plants in Pakistan.

Last month, Volkswagen also signed an agreement with a car dealer to start operations in Pakistan. These new entrants, plan to invest almost $3 Billion in Pakistan for producing various vehicles, ranging from cars to trucks.

Regal Automobile Plant Starts Production!

Pak Suzuki was exempted from taxation, under the Greenfield investment category by the previous government. However, the government was reluctant to receive fresh investment from the company, refusing to treat the automobile giant as a new entrant.

That has changed now as the PTI administration seems to show a lot of interest due to the pressure by the Japanese government and is willing to offer incentives as well.

Officials close to the development, Adviser to PM on commerce, industries, and investment Abdul Razaq Dawood have played a major role in convincing Imran Khan that Pak Suzuki should be treated under the Greenfield investment category.

If the Pakistan government does, in fact, do that, it is expected to receive almost $450 million worth of investment in return.

Officials have been critical of the adviser, stating that his view will encourage Pak Suzuki’s investment in the country but will hinder and disturb new entrants, as they would want the same privileges as the local brand.

Automobile Giant Datsun to Launch SUV for Emerging Markets

Currently, three dominant Japanese manufacturers are functioning in Pakistan:

  1. Pak Suzuki
  2. Indus Motors
  3. Honda Atlas

These automotive companies have a monopoly in the country, but they are also using technology that is obsolete and vehicle quality is poor.

The representatives of the new entrants also held a meeting this week with the Ministry of Industry and Production and raised the issue of allowing Pak Suzuki to invest under Greenfield category.

They raised serious concerns and protested against the way Pak Suzuki is being treated, and feared that it would disrupt their investment plans.

The new entrants also demanded that Suzuki should not be given the status of a new entrant and that import of used vehicles should also be banned.

The PMLN government had approved the automobile policy in order to break the monopoly of the 3 Japanese giants.

The Board of Investment (BOI) had refused tax exemptions for manufacturers such as Pak Suzuki and had also shown no interest in omitting the auto policy in any way.

We have yet to see what the future holds for Pak Suzuki and the new players into the automotive industry.

Talking about her educational life, Komal revealed that she was suspended by the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi for three years and the reason will surprise you!

The actress shared that she had been a very obedient and intelligent girl since her childhood, who would take her studies seriously.

But during her exam in IBA, Komal had trouble memorizing a definition so she went for a shortcut. Deciding to cheat, she tore the definition from the book and took the paper to her exam. Later, she was caught cheating and consequently, got suspended for 3 years.

Well, that’s what happens when bookworms try to cheat in exams for the first time!

Although heart-broken for a while, the setback did not stop Komal from pursuing her goals and she was finally able to pull herself back together.

She applied in LUMS and several other universities in the United States. Amazingly, Komal was offered a 75% scholarship by LUMS and 100% scholarship by a U.S. university. She opted to study in the United States and the rest is history!

She also shared her experience about living with girls of different beliefs and how it made her more emphatic towards people from diverse backgrounds.

The young star also faced many ups and downs in her life. After a year of her father’s death, she faced threats from her landlord and alleged him for mistreating and forcing her family to move out of their apartment.

The co-founder of Careem is also the first and only name from the Middle East in the technology and science category.

Careem Bus Service to Launch in Pakistan Soon!

Bloomberg also praised Mudassir’s efforts in One Million Arab Coders project, which offers online courses in the website and mobile-interface development.

Being the CEO and co-founder of Careem, Bloomberg listed Mudassir Sheikha in the Science and Tech category and stated:

Sheikha’s six-year-old company has more than 1 million drivers in the Mideast and northern Africa, allowing customers to book bikes, golf carts, rickshaws, and boats, in addition to cars. This has made Careem an attractive potential purchase for Uber Technologies Inc., which Bloomberg News reported in September is in discussions to acquire it for as much as $2.5 billion.

Bloomberg added:

Sheikha is also using his clout to support One Million Arab Coders, an initiative that offers online courses in the website and mobile-interface development, and he puts on a hackathon in Ramallah and an artificial-intelligence-oriented summer camp in the United Arab Emirates.

December 25th marks the birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It also marks the day of celebrations for Christmas Day by the Christian community of Pakistan.

According to Pakistan’s Official Holiday Calendar 2018, a public holiday will be observed on 25 December on account of Quaid-e-Azam’s birth anniversary and Christmas.

December 26th will also be a holiday, only for Christian community.

All public institutions, schools, colleges, universities and private organizations will remain closed in lieu of the historical date.

Ceremonies to celebrate Jinnah’s day will be organised in all parts of the country. On the occasion, tributes will be paid in memory to the Father of the Nation and his relentlessness efforts towards the creation of Pakistan.

The change of guard ceremony will also be held at the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi as per the annual tradition.

Remembering Junaid Jamshed & PK-661 Crash Victims [In Pictures]

It has now been two whole years since the chilling unfateful crash of PK-661 Havelian, en route to Islamabad from Chitral, carrying 47 passengers and crew members.

Religious scholar and former pop singer Junaid Jamshed along with his wife were also aboard the plane.

His sudden death left the entire nation bereaved. Pakistan lost one of our own and words simply cannot express the grief that will surely never leave us.

Even after 730 days, it feels as if it were just yesterday when the country was left stunned that JJ is no more with us.

Despite all this time, the investigations regarding the Havelian air crash could not be completed and nobody knows why the plane went down.

Below are the pictures of people who died in the crash — including 42 passengers, five crew, and one ground engineer.

Fortnite Tips & Tricks to Win Battle Royale!

Fornite is everywhere, being played by almost everyone, and yet the game is quite difficult! If you’re one of those players who’ve just dived into the game and struggling to earn a battle royale win, do not worry because we’ve got your back.

Here are 5 tips, tricks, and secrets to help you master the game.

 1. Don’t Land in Main Regions

This is one is quite obvious, but mistakes are still made as the game gives you very little indication that many regions on the map are designated as ‘Landing areas’. These areas tend to be a hotbed of activity, full of people playing aggressively.

So unless you’re able to fight immediately after you land, you’re in big trouble.

Simply put, do not land in regions that are main or named, such as the Titled towers or Wailing woods, there are several dotted houses on the map, locate those and go and get your supplies from there.

2. Remember Loot Case Locations- It’s Helpful!

There are many ways to find supplies in Fortnite, you could pillage a house, tuck into a tree with a pickaxe or take out an enemy, but most important of all is to finding treasure chests full of loot.

Unlike the weapons and supplies you’ll find in a given place, these chests are not easily available or randomized. This means that if you run into one, and afterward you know where it is then that is a crucial advantage and key for your survival.

3. Master the Art of Building

The most important survival tool in the game is building, you can conjure structures out of thin air and you can do that instantly.

The most basic structure is called ‘1X1’, it gives you instant protection, also a higher ground (which is a huge tactical advantage), its simple to build and can most certainly save your life.

The best way to learn how to build in the game is by dropping the structure into a secluded area of the map. If you own the ‘Save the World’ mode, you can practice all this there as well.

4. Get Yourself a Shotgun!

If you land on a rooftop and the only weapon available is a handgun, so pick it and use it. In any other instance in Fortnite, you just walk away from a pistol until you find a shotgun.

The vast majority of combat is close enough in proximity, for which shotguns are by far the most useful weaponry.

It is also possible that the first player you encounter is inside a building and the most useful weapon in there is a shotgun, a single well-placed shell will take out other players, even with the most basic models.

5. Find a Shield Position

There are bandages & first aid kids in Fortnite that are very useful, but shield potions are far more helpful.

Instead of replacing any health that you’ve lost, they automatically add a new bar of health on top of the one you’ve already got.

If you get a trio of small ones, they’ll add 75 % of additional health, but there are options out there that can push you all the way up to 100 %.

However, you must use the potions immediately upon finding them, the sooner you consume them, the better!

This time around, Burger King was the one to make an entire campaign around a new marketing strategy called ‘The Whopper Detour’ and as suggested, yes, McDonald’s plays a huge part in it.

Lots of BK fans were a little confused about that in the world was happening. Some thought that the account was hacked by a McDonald’s fan whereas others were curious to see where this was going.

Soon, the brand put everyone’s confusion to rest after officially announcing their new campaign- the Whopper Detour!

The catch is, meat-lovers can get their favourite Whoppers at the cost of just one penny, from McDonald’s!

That’s right. The fast-food giant has rolled out a head-turning strategy to promote its new BK app.

All you have to do is follow these instructions and voila! The Whopper is yours for just a penny!

Burger King Just Trolled McDonald’s in an Epic Twitter War!

BK says FCB New York approached it with the premise about a year ago.

“We love ideas that when the idea gets to us we say ‘how the heck are we going to pull this off?'” said Marcelo Pascoa, BK’s global head of brand marketing.

Nearly 75% of all Americans live within a 3-mile radius of at least one McDonalds outlet. There were more than 14,000 McDonald’s restaurants and roughly 7,200 Burger King restaurants in the U.S in 2017, according to data from Technomic.

To make things more interesting, Burking Kind also shared a print ad with the McDonalds’ sign to read “Billions Swerved” instead of “Billions Served, showing the BK King making the snarky change.

The franchised worked with Waze to make an ad that appears when one’s car stops near a McDonald’s. And an online video promoting the limited-time deal shows actors trying to redeem the offer at the McDonald’s drive-thru, where their orders are met with confusion from McDonald’s staff.

ScoreLine: Reviving Cricket Publication in Pakistan

At a time when the print medium was losing its readership all around the world, Pakistan’s largest cricket magazine in English ‘The Cricketer Pakistan’ vanished without a trace.

The magazine was unable to make a successful transition from print to digital and that’s one of the many reasons why in the age of digital media, Pakistan had no English language magazine representing everyone’s favorite game – Cricket.

That’s when the former Sub Editor of the now defunct magazine Shoaib Ahmed along with Media Executive Muhammad Rahimtoola decided to carry the flag forward and come up with a magazine that brought the good, the bad and the ugly side of Pakistan Cricket to readers who could read it both online and in print form. 

“Our vision was to create a platform for the entire cricketing community of the country, who we know follow the sport relentlessly.”

It was three years ago when Muhammad Rahimtoola and Shoaib Ahmed launched the magazine and since then, it has kept the tradition of critical analysis, investigative journalism and carrying match reports alive.

With Pakistan Cricket team on the rise, it was assumed that ScoreLine will only cover the good things that were associated with the Pakistan Cricket Board, however the passionate journalists and analysts writing for ScoreLine vented out their concerns in a civilized manner, pointing out the many wrongs the officials of the Board considered right, making it a mouthpiece for all those who believed in finding out the faults in Pakistan Cricket and steering it on the right path.

Social Media apps were dominant again in 2018, as on Tuesday Apple unveiled its list for the ‘Top iOS Applications of 2018’.

For the 3rd straight year, usage of Snapchat has decreased as YouTube rises to the top spot on Apple’s list for most downloaded iPhone apps of 2018.

The video-broadcasting website can now proudly call itself the ”Most Popular iPhone App of the Year”.

World’s Most Valuable Company: Microsoft Briefly Overtakes Apple!

The revised annual rankings seem to demonstrate streaming video content’s continued dominance over other Social-Media platforms.

And Snap Chat is not the only app to take a hit, Facebook and Instagram were also unable to stop the rise of YouTube in 2018.

For the year, Snap Chat dropped to the No.3 spot, Bitmoji on 6th and Instagram takes the No.2 spot.

YouTube rose from No.3 to No.1 this year, Snap Chat fell from No.2 to No.3 and Bitmoji slipped a whopping 5 spots, dropping from No.1 to No.6.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is gearing up to yet again fulfil one of his electoral promises- the establishment of the Naya Pakistan Youth Program.

It is expected that the program will officially be announced in a couple of days. The PM held a meeting with Usman Dar, the current chairman of Prime Minister’s Youth Program in regards to it.

Reportedly, it was decided at the meeting that Dar’s performance as the head of the youth is fruitful, which is why PTI and PM Khan have decided to issue a notification regarding Dar’s appointment.

Dar announced post-meeting that he will not be extracting any salary as a special assistant to the PM.

We will spend money on the youth and not on laptops. I will work with the prime minister to empower youth to become independent

PM Khan shared that the support he received from the country has brought him into power. Therefore, he wants to do everything in his power to help them and so something special.

If the youth did not support us, we may not have been in power today. We will provide the youth with facilities which have never been given before.

Pakistan Foreign Affair officials have released a notification to promote skilled labor at a large scale in Germany.

This comes after the country relaxed its immigration policy to attract highly skilled migrants from abroad (including Pakistan).

The recent amendments in the immigration policy of Germany will allow millions of skilled labors to work in Europe’s biggest economy, provided that they can speak German.

Google’s New Feature Will Help You Find Jobs!

Formulation of a specific strategy by the government of Pakistan can help attain maximum benefit from this opportunity.

In September 2018, 338,200 high skilled jobs in Germany remained unfilled. According to an estimate, there would be a need of 3 million skilled workers in Germany by 2030.

This demanded the need to relax the German immigration policy so that international migrants can be hired to fill skilled labor gaps.

Jobs in Canada: 430,000 Job Vacancies Available!

According to Ayesha Saeed, Foreign Affair official serving in Europe, Germany is opening its borders to skilled labors including engineers, metallurgy workers, mathematics, IT technicians and other professionals.

The letter highlights that the major proportion of Pakistan’s population (67%) is under the age bracket of 25. It emphasizes the need to train the interested candidates in order to strengthen their skills and enhance their German language proficiency.

This can also help in the formulation of bilateral institutional mechanism to facilitate the flow of human resource between Pakistan and Germany.

This notification has been forwarded to the National Vocational and Training Commission of Pakistan along with the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training and Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication so that relevant steps can be taken by the officials to promote skilled labor in the country.
