“He was sent by God, God took him away” – Conversations with Kanwal on the Loss of a Spouse

conversations with kanwal episode 8

Conversations with Kanwal is a digital talk show conceptualized and hosted by Kanwal Ahmed, the founder of Soul Sisters, explores real stories from Pakistan to show the world what women are made of.

Kanwal likes to call Soul Sisters Pakistan an empowering movement for women, built upon the idea of highlighting their struggles and achievements and providing them with a platform where they can share anything they feel the need to.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Wife Cried After Watching Him Being Harassed in Viral Video

The theme of the latest episode of Conversations with Kanwal was the loss of a spouse, and it featured Madiha who spoke openly and warmly about coping with her husband’s passing away in a plane crash.

Loss is ever an easy subject to discuss, as there is no parameter to measure the pain brought with loss, nor is there one fixed way of addressing the anguish. Especially the loss of a spouse, with which is attached an ache that is entirely unexplainable.

Watch the full episode here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoYkerFoQJM

As always, the audience fell in love with the episode and its theme.

Considering that the society we live in is strongly patriarchal in nature, a woman’s losing her spouse becomes even more complicated.

As a woman she is required to grieve but perhaps not as openly as she might like to, she is required to stay at home for around 3 months which means has to stay indoors the whole time and can barely divert her mind even if she wants to.

“Overspending on Weddings & Dowry Is Not the Same” – Muneeb Butt

The challenges of a widow are many, but the latest episode of Conversations with Kanwal was focused on dealing with the loss of a spouse. Needless to say, it is a topic not widely discussed, so an episode on it was more than necessary.

Kudos to Kanwal for touching upon subjects that are often brushed under the rug and considered either too insignificant or too taboo to discuss openly.

Have you seen the episode? Tell us what you think, and tell us if and how it helped you cope with any kind of loss you may have faced in life.

There Will Be No Funding for New Universities – HEC

hec to stop funding new universities

A drastic slash was observed in the funds allocated to HEC by the federal government this year. From Rs. 45 billion last year the funds have reduced to Rs 37 billion.

Owing to this budget cut, the HEC has announced that it will stop providing funds to new public varsities. NOCs from the HEC will still be provided to the universities though.

Gas Tariffs Increased by 190%, Social Media Aflame with Outrage

The Sindh Government has established four universities in the last one-and-a-half years, all on its own:

  1. Government College University Hyderabad
  2. Sheikh Ayaz University Shikarpur
  3. Begum Nusrat Bhutto University for Women
  4. Sukkur and the Sufism University, Bhit Shah

HEC Chairman, Dr Banuri confirmed that there is insufficient money to fund the operations of already existing universities, so allocating funds to new universities is unthinkable.

However, some funds have been allocated for a Knowledge Economy. The knowledge economy is part of measures taken by the Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar to remove structural flaws in the economy, which by previous governments had neglected.

Dr Attaur Rehman, Science and Technology Chairman and former HEC chairman, mentioned that he had demanded a budget of Rs30 billion for the knowledge economy even though there is no separate ministry for it, but was allocated even less than half of that, which is about Rs 13.5 billion.

The concept behind the knowledge economy is linked to industries, agriculture, science and technology, primary and secondary education and higher education; hence, the funds allocated to it will help promote education in other way.

Gas Tariffs Increased by 190%, Social Media Aflame with Outrage

gas prices increase

The federal government, with the Economic Coordination Committee, decided yesterday to increase gas tariffs by up to 190% to fulfill the remaining conditions of the International Monetary Fund.

It has been agreed with the IMF that the new tariffs will be in effect from July 1, 2019. It is notable that, in this fiscal year, PTI government has increased the prices of gas for the second time.

Moreover, the Pakistani Rupee reached an all-time low of Rs. 161.5 against the greenback yesterday, which means it depreciated by Rs. 4.5 in one day only.

This just serves as further bad news for Pakistanis, and both the news combined have taken the social media by storm.

Many are back to criticizing PM Imran Khan’s idea of ‘Naya Pakistan’ and ‘tabdeeli’ as always.

Many are discussing how this hike will affect the salaried class the most and criticizing the PM straight away.

As a layman, the gas bill is one of the easiest on the wallet. However, after the tariffs increasing twice, it might not be the same anymore.

While it may not be such a big deal for the elite class, the middle and upper middle income groups are the ones who will suffer most from the burden, who have already become victim to inflation and the ever-increasing income taxes.

Apple Acquires Self-Driving Vehicle Startup

Apple

Apple has been rumored to have been working on its own self-driving car for a while now.

While most technology manufacturers are focused on trendy smartphones, Apple has its eyes set on self-driving vehicles and startups.

However, they soon rammed into a financial roadblock and were seeking a buyer.

Apple took the opportunity and purchased the startup. There were rumors that Apple had abandoned the secret car project they had started in 2014, but it looks like the company did not give up on its vision.

Dayfresh Flavored Milk Wins Big at Pakistan’s First Effie Award

Dayfresh Flavored Milk recently bagged Pakistan’s first Effie Award 2019 in in the Cold Beverages category.

The coveted Effie Awards are recognized internationally by advertisers and agencies as the gold standard of measuring marketing effectiveness and excellence.

Organized in a collaboration with Pakistan Advertisers Society (PAS), Effie Awards Pakistan witnessed brand innovators and marketing leaders being lauded for their pioneering promotional strategies.

A brand of Dairyland, Dayfresh Flavored Milk shone at the ceremony by bagging a Bronze Trophy for its “Doodh with an Attitude” Campaign

In the same category, Coca-Cola, Sprite and Coke & Music bagged a Silver Award, however, there were no Gold winners.

An innovative campaign to make milk the new ‘COOL’

The ‘Doodh with an Attitude’ campaign aimed to break the age-old stereotype that labels milk as a drink only consumed by children.

Posted by Dayfresh Flavored Milk on Thursday, 9 May 2019

In a bid to redefine flavoured milk in Pakistan, Dayfresh unleashed the cool factor in its action-packed advertisements to attract its target market, i.e. the teen and young adults.

By building upon a clutter-breaking positioning, it encouraged the youth to lead a healthy lifestyle and chose a better alternative to fizzy and processed drinks.

Utilizing a refreshing approach to market their flavoured milk, the ads flaunts a witty tagline, funky vibe, vibrant visuals, and an energetic tone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHXwm2lNMXw

The brand ensured that milk becomes everybody’s go-to drink with delicious flavors of Chocolate, Banana, Coffee, Strawberry, Pista Zafraan and Mango to enjoy.

dayfresh

Dayfresh flavored milk also created massive engagement with outdoor promotions and brand activations at educational institutes. They designed a 360-degree execution plan from the product’s packaging to its digital and BTL to reach out to the potential buyers.

They also organized inter-school competitions, talent hunts and distributed their product in vintage yet funky foxies to generate word of mouth.

Consequently, ‘Doodh with an Attitude’ became all about the young generation accepting challenges, being risk-takers, enhancing their true personality to the fullest and accepting who they truly are.

Needless to say, the brand has swiftly risen against its rivals taking the flavored market by storm with this powerful strategy.

A proud moment for the Beverage Powerhouse

Dayfresh is a name synonymous with premium quality and freshness. It has quickly created its place amongst the present saturated dairy market in the country.

Competing with brands that have been around for decades, Flavored Milk by Dayfresh has emerged as confident and strong. Not just that, one milestone the brand has achieved is to market products of a category which is considered to be dull and just for children in an out-of-the-box manner as well as sent a message that milk is for everyone.

It has played a vital role in making flavored milk popular again in Pakistan and positioned it as a nutritious beverage for the Pakistani youth in the future landscape. The company used valuable insights from the surveys conducted using young adults to make it very relatable to their audience.

Most importantly, they did everything and more on a comparatively lesser budget than to its rivals and witness a growth in the market share and units in a short span of time.

Surely, winning big at Effie Pakistan is a massive feat and the brand is proud to unlock this major milestone.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Wife Cried After Watching Him Being Harassed in Viral Video

sarfaraz ahmed

Pakistan has gained confidence after their victory against South Africa and now must win the match at Edgbaston against New Zealand if they are to secure a realistic possibility of reaching the semi-finals after a weak start to the tournament.

In conversation with cricket enthusiast turned anchor and sports analyst, Zainab Abbas, Sarfaraz Ahmed talked about the loss against India and how the team learned from that experience.

When we win our fans give us a lot of respect and when we lose their anger is valid because they have expectations from us -Sarfaraz

World Cup 2019: Sarfaraz Ahmed Defends His Famous Yawn

Pakistani fans severely criticized the national team after its poor performance against arch-rivals India in the World Cup encounter in Manchester.

In fact, a video went viral where the skipper was seen was walking in a mall in England with his son when a fan stopped him and asked why he looked like a fat pig.

Speaking of the abusive video, the captain said that he found his wife crying in the hotel room after watching the clip.

When I went back to the hotel I saw my wife was crying after watching the video. I tried to explain to her that this is just one video and that we have had people walk up to us and tell things far worse. This is nothing serious we must be strong. All of this is a part of life, when we don’t perform well, we will have to go through all this.

sarfaraz

The support he received after the video went viral was phenomenal. It led to a public apology by the fan and gave him the motivation to play better.

“I have always said that our Pakistani fans love us a lot. And we also know that when we win they will give us a lot of respect and when we lose, their anger will also be valid because they have expectations from us.

Thanking the fans for their undying support despite the loss against India, the captain said that they should only focus on giving their best.

After losing the match against India, that one week that passed by, however, it was, our fans still came to Lord’s and supported the Pakistan team.

They came to the hotel where we were staying and even met us outside and all of them told us one thing that we should concentrate on giving our best and leave the rest up to God.

“Overspending on Weddings & Dowry Is Not the Same” – Muneeb Butt

muneeb butt wedding

We all remember how Aineeb became the talk of the town in December 2018.

Many fans and followers were engrossed in admiring and idealizing Aiman and Muneeb’s flamboyant wedding festivities.

On the other hand, many pointed out how it was absolutely unnecessary to spend such humongous amounts of money on ten wedding functions, when such a lavish wedding could easily have been avoided.

Aimen and Muneeb also participated in a campaign against dowry around the same time.

That only gave people another chance to criticize them for an annoying display of ‘hypocrisy’.

Back then, Muneeb broke his silence over the matter in an instagram post, where he claimed that his wedding expenditures were nothing compared to the amounts he spends on charity.

Read the full response here:

Muneeb Butt Silences Haters Over Extravagant Wedding Bash!

In his recent talk show, however, Waseem Badami brought the topic of their loaded, luxurious wedding back to the surface.

Making the same comparison, he asked Muneeb how their wedding expenditures were justified, especially in the light of the anti-dowry campaign they had advocated last year.

Watch the video here:

https://youtu.be/nEnVEk2djaM?t=181

Badami’s point was that it all boiled down to the idea of spending money needlessly, be it the elaborate dowry parents arrange for their daughters or an overly-lavish wedding.

Muneeb’s response was different this time.

Instead of maintaining his stance about spending more on charity than he spent on the wedding, he simply stated that it is okay to spend elaborately on weddings if one can easily afford it, without it becoming a burden on them.

He condemns the idea of dowry because it puts an unnecessary pressure on the bride’s family, he added. But spending gladly and with one’s will is a different thing.

Do you think the public’s harsh remarks on Aiman and Muneeb were justified? And was Badamicorrect in saying that, be it dowry or over spending on a lavish wedding, it is essentially and equally problematic to waste money in amounts not needed?

Pakistan vs New Zealand: Wasim Akram Hopes Pakistan can repeat 1992 performance

pak vs nz

Pakistan has found hope to reach the semi-finals after a tremendous victory against South Africa in their previous match, and we are all ready to see them perform in the Pak vs Nz match.

The team has five points from six games and is currently placed at the seventh spot in the ICC World Cup 2019.

World Cup 2019: Sarfaraz Ahmed Defends His Famous Yawn

Following the Pak vs SA victory, former Pakistan captain and cricket commentator Wasim Akram has advised current captain Safaraz Ahmed not to mess with the winning combination and go with an unchanged playing XI against New Zealand in their critical World Cup match to be played on Wednesday at Edgbaston.

Hoping that the boys play well, Wasim Akram is expecting for a repeat of 1992 World Cup performance when Pakistan had defeated the Black Caps— who were also unbeaten till that match – by seven wickets in the league stage tie in Christchurch. Pakistan defeated the Black Caps twice in the 1992 World Cup, including the semi-final.

“They were unbeaten in 1992 too before playing against us and we won the game, they’re unbeaten again and I hope we repeat the show, but boys will have to give their best,”

Akram said in an interview with Geo TV.

“There’s no need to change the winning combination,” he continued.

However, the former left-arm paceman wants Pakistan to work on their fielding.

“We have dropped 14 catches in the tournament. We are top on the list of teams dropping most catches in the World Cup which isn’t a good sign,” he shared his disappointment, adding that we need to overcome this problem.

Akram also added that Babar Azam who has scored two half-centuries in the World Cup so far needs to start transforming his fifties into hundreds if he wants to become a world-class batsman.

“The openers did well, Babar did well, but Babar needs to convert his fifties into hundreds,” said Akram while discussing the game against South Africa.

Pakistan is in desperate need to win their remaining three games. We wish all the best to Team Green and hope that the other teams’ results go in their favor so that they can make it to the last four stages.

The US dollar has just reached an all time high against the Pakistani Rupee at Rs. 160 in the interbank market.

With a rise of Rs 2.2 at the start of the trading, the USD is now stronger than ever before against the rupee, which has been falling against the dollar following an agreement with the International Monetary Fund on a $6 billon loan with expected strict conditions including a “market determined” exchange rate.

#BoycottDollar: Twitteratis Take Social Media by Storm to Support the Rupee

The news is taking the internet by storm and the public seems displeased with the constant raise of the greenback against the rupee.

Considering that the budget 2019-20 introduced by PTI lately has also brought price hikes with it, the USD’s rise only brings bad news for the country.

From car prices, fuel prices, gold prices, transport fares, everything is only becoming more expensive.

Naturally, the common, salaried man who also must pay the taxes only feels more burdened than before.

Food Safety – A Global Imperative

Nestle

Ever wondered how food safety mistakes can cost you your health? Understanding the importance of food safety involves getting the basics right. This starts with understanding how unsafe food poses global health threats, putting the masses at risk.

According to the estimates by the World Health Organization, every year 220 million children suffer from diarrheal diseases and at least 96,000 die. Food Safety concerns particularly impact the developing countries due to weak food safety systems, lack of infrastructure and unskilled human resources resulting in an epidemic of foodborne diseases.

What remains critical at this time is to realize food safety as a shared responsibility – the one to be taken seriously by policy makers, businesses and consumers. With product safety and security at the top of Pakistan’s new government’s priority list, the industry now needs to find ways to ensure quality measures every step of the process.

A key to that would be to ensure transparency within the complete food supply chain. Providing relevant transparent information can be the first step towards strengthening consumers trust and confidence in the products they consume.

This can be a formidable management challenge keeping in mind the compliance complexities of the international standards in developing counties like Pakistan and consumers expectations.

Nestlé is one of the very few organizations in the country that demonstrates a strong commitment towards food safety and quality, while prioritizing transparency at the very top with its ‘Seeing is Believing’ slogan. More than 2000 stakeholders have visited Nestle Pakistan’s Sheikhupura facility, to observe how the organization is implementing best practices and making meaningful contributions in the industry.

Visitors from various disciplines and walks of life take the tour of the facility throughout the year, learning the process and witnessing how conformance standards are met at each step. Fawad Chaudhry, Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Kaukab Iqbal, Consumer Association of Pakistan, Marzieh Hosseininezhad, Director of International Scientific Cooperation Office, RIFST, Mashhad and Dr. Farrukh Iqbal, Executive Director, Institute of Business Administration, to name a few recently visited the plant to critically observe the facility and its processes.

‘I have been very impressed with one aspect of Nestlé’s operations. And that is not only are they interested in producing high-quality milk and water but they also invest time and money to make sure that farmers also learn how to produce good quality milk’, commented Dr. Farrukh Iqbal.

Dr Kaukab Iqbal on his visit said, ‘Nestlé’s factory has an international standard, I would like to appreciate the management for giving the best to consumers’.  Marzieh Hosseininezhad, Director of International Scientific Cooperation Office, RIFST, Mashhad also endorsed the factory’s standard and the highly qualified personnel after her tour inside the factory.

Safe food supplies support economies, contribute to food and nutrition security, and hence underpin sustainable development. Consumers living in the digital age are more aware than ever with social media conquering a significant part of their lives and information traveling in real time.

Urbanization and changes in consumer habits, including travel, has impacted consumers eating and drinking patterns and continue to do so. As the world’s population grows, the intensification and industrialization of agriculture and animal production to meet the increasing demand for food creates both opportunities and challenges for food safety.

Simultaneously, climate change is also impacting food safety, where temperature changes modify food safety risks associated with food production, storage, and distribution. Educating the masses on how the final product reaches them is a global imperative and has to be realized sooner than later. Nestlé seems to have taken the first step, but more will have to follow.

Daraz Mobile Week: The Ultimate Relief From Soaring Prices!

daraz

The fourth annual Daraz Mobile Week – the biggest electronics sale of the year – is now live.

As it has in the past, this year, too, the e-commerce platform will be offering discounts on smartphone devices and accessories from top brands like Samsung, Mi, Honor, Apple, and CAT.

However, the platform has announced that the scope of the sale event this year has been increased to include electronic appliances such as air conditioners, televisions, small appliances and large appliances such as refrigerators.

Second Marriage In Pakistan Not Allowed Without Arbitration Council’s Permit

second marriage ihc

It has been made mandatory to first apply for permission for second marriage to the Arbitrary Council, decided Justice Athar Minallah from Islamabad High Court on Monday.

As per the 1961 Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, it was required for a man to take the current/first wife’s consent before second marriage. If not complied, the man would be punished and fined.

The verdict issued by IHC implies that, a man cannot marry for the second time until and unless approval from the Arbitrary Council is obtained, even if the first wife has consented to the idea.

In 2013, a person called Liaqat Ali married for the second time after having married Dilshad Bibi in 2011; he had not taken Dilshad Bibi’s consent.

There was a case on him, and he was handed over one-month jail sentence by an Islamabad magistrate for his offense along with a Rs. 5,000. fine. However, an additional judge released him on the grounds that he was a native of Azad Kashmir.

That judge’s decision was also nullified yesterday, on Monday, and it was announced by IHC that all laws apply to all individuals with the NIC. He also remarked that judges must hear cases on merit from now onwards.

Social Media reacts to the Decision

There have been mixed reactions from the public over this news.

For some, it is the best news of the day.

While others are totally condemning the verdict.
