US, Pakistan Strike a Massive Reserves Deal: What Does it Mean for India?

A new milestone was reached in the growing friendship between Pakistan and the US that could have significant implications for the entire subcontinent.

Washington and Islamabad have agreed to lower tariffs on the latter’s exports. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced that the two parties had reached a deal to develop Pakistan’s oil reserves.

In the same social media post, Trump also claimed that they were searching for the oil company best suited to manoeuvre this groundbreaking partnership. No specific details were given regarding the agreements.

Nonetheless, the blossoming relationship between the US and Pakistan, which Trump sees as a major “non-NATO” ally, has significant consequences for Washington’s struggling relationship with India.

Better Pak-US Relations Threaten India’s Diplomatic Standing

Historically, India was a close ally of Washington, serving as a strong deterrent to China’s growing influence in South Asia. It appears as if President Trump is looking to use Pakistan in a similar, but more powerful role.

Islamabad has deep-rooted economic, social, and political ties with Beijing. During uncertain geopolitical times and a fierce trade war, Pakistan could serve as an invaluable diplomatic channel between the US and China.

Furthermore, New Delhi’s dealings with Russia have also impacted its ties with the US. President Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imported goods from India, a move that could strain relations between the two powerful strategic allies.

Speaking to reporters, the US President said:

“They have one of the highest tariffs in the world now, and they’re willing to cut it very substantially. We’re talking to India now – we’ll see what happens … You’ll know by the end of this week.”

India’s buying arms from Russia was seen as anti-American by the White House. Hence, these threats can be seen as a punishment.

Keeping Pakistan in the loop further strengthens Washington’s strategic goals. If the relationship with India crumbles, Pakistan could easily fill the same shoes.

Pakistan to Gain Much From Stronger Economic and Diplomatic Ties

Although it is centred on potential rather than proven assets, the US–US-US-Pakistan oil reserves deal is a strategic reexamination in both energy and diplomacy. Pakistan stands to gain enduring U.S. economic and geopolitical support, which could boost its economy and diplomatic position

Meanwhile, India faces mounting tariffs and diplomatic pressure. For India, the importance now lies in navigating these changing dynamics. Economic diplomacy and regional partnerships are a start, but they need to be careful and elaborate.
