Should Jasprit Bumrah Sit Out the Asia Cup 2025?

India’s fast bowling lynchpin Jasprit Bumrah is once again in the middle of a fitness-related debate, and this time, it’s former cricketer Aakash Chopra who’s ringing the alarm bells.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra didn’t mince his words while expressing concern over Bumrah’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the hot and humid conditions of the UAE.

The Bumrah Conundrum

“Bumrah’s availability will once again be a question. However, if he is available, because if he doesn’t play the fifth Test either, then he should be playing the Asia Cup, at least that’s what I think,” said Chopra, carefully toeing the line between expectation and uncertainty.

Well, as it turns out, Bumrah won’t be playing the fifth Test at The Oval. The BCCI medical team has advised him to rest, citing long-term workload management. Given Bumrah’s previous struggles with a back injury, this cautious approach seems more than justified.

Is the Asia Cup Worth the Risk?

Now, let’s be honest, if you’re an Indian fan, watching Bumrah steam in with a white ball under the floodlights is a sight to behold.

But is it wise to risk him in the brutal September heat of Dubai and Abu Dhabi? Chopra doesn’t think so. And he’s not alone.

Considering the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is just months away, keeping Bumrah fit and firing for that marquee event is far more critical than squeezing him into an Asia Cup that, let’s face it, doesn’t carry quite the same weight.

Shami’s Ship Has Sailed?

While discussing the squad for the Asia Cup, Chopra also had a clear take on Mohammed Shami.

“I can almost guarantee that Mohammad Shami won’t be there,” he declared, adding that the veteran pacer was only part of the recent setup to test his fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Now that Shami is not in the Test squad and the selectors seem to be looking ahead, it appears unlikely he’ll feature in the T20 setup again. “I don’t see him playing T20 cricket at this stage,” Chopra concluded.

That may come as a surprise to some, but the writing’s been on the wall for a while now.

So should Bumrah skip the Asia Cup?

If you’re thinking long term, yes. Burning out your star fast bowler in unforgiving desert conditions for a regional tournament just weeks before the T20 World Cup? Not the smartest play.

Chopra may have sounded cautious, but his logic holds up. Bumrah isn’t just another name on the team sheet, he’s India’s best bet on big days. And big days demand smart planning.

India have enough firepower to navigate the Asia Cup without Bumrah. But for the World Cup 2024, they’ll need him at full throttle.
