1965 War Explained Through Rare Newspaper Clippings & Images

After the creation of Pakistan, The father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah said in his speech on March 1948 in Chittagang, East Pakistan [now Bangladesh]:

“The Story of Pakistan, its struggle and its achievement, is the very story of great human ideals, struggling to survive in the face of odds and difficulties”.

Pakistan’s Defence Day [Sept.06] is one of the most vital events of Pakistan’s history. On September 6, 1965, the Indian army crossed the international borders of Pakistan without a formal declaration of War. It was a time when not just our brave soldiers but the entire nation stood up to defend the motherland and compelled the Indian Army to escape from the battlefield, eventually, a ceasefire came into effect on September 23, 1965 under the auspices of the United Nations due to an intervention of then superpowers i.e. USSR and the USA.

Those seventeen days truly portrayed what was once said by the legendary French general= Napoléon Bonaparte, “There are only two forces in the world, the sword and the spirit”.

On September 15, 1965, American Broadcasting Corporation’s Roy Malone reported that “I have been a journalist now for twenty years and want to go on record that I have never seen a more confident and victorious group of soldiers than those fighting for Pakistan, right now.”

On September 17, Time Magazine reported that “Pakistan’s small highly-trained army is more than a match for the Indians.”

According to the London Daily Mirror of September 1965 “India is being soundly beaten by a nation which is outnumbered by four and a half to one in population and three to one in the size of armed forces.”

Hyderabadi rabri has been famous for its taste for as long as I can remember. It is like desi Ben & Jerry for a broken heart.

An everyday dessert which the desi mostly have in order to complete their three-course meal is a Gulab Jamun. Soft, sweet and available in different sizes; they provide me with a moment of sheer bliss.

Chum Chums are like Gulab Jamuns sister, only white. Also, there is no such thing as having one chum chum. You at least have two of them in one go, if you are not diabetic!

Something we can easily make at home and it definitely tastes amazing. Shahi Tukre consists of fried bread and cooked milk. Also, it tastes best when it’s hot and fresh.

The most common desi dessert, known to be a perfect combo with samosa in Ramadan.

  1. Gajar ka Halwa

One can not go wrong with a gajar ka halwa. It is the right amount of sweet and it is generally nice to look at. What can I say, I love red and white!

Pakistani and Indian traditional sweet Sohan Halwa is originated from Multan, Pakistan. It is the specialty of Hafiz Halwa Shop Multan. They claim that Dewan Sawan Mal, the ruler of Multan during the 1700s, invented the recipe. It’s prepared by boiling the mixture of water, sugar, milk, and cornflour until it turns to thick  form. Ghee prevents it from sticking to the pan and saffron gives it a unique flavor.

Multan ka Sohan Halwa is amongst one of our favorites. Beware of the fake ones, though.

  1. Khopra Pak

Made of coconut, as the name suggests, Khopra Pak is the right amount of sweet. It comes in various colors but my favorite is the one in green color. A must try!

  1. Sheer Khorma

Usually served on the first day of Eid after Eid namaz in order to mark the start of a day of celebration and feast. Sheer Khurma is usually enjoyed when hot and is made of milk, vermicelli, sugar, nuts, dry fruit, ghee and fragranced with cardamom, kewra or saffron. Sheer khurma is usually milky golden in color and can be thin or medium-thick depending on the cooking method.

Ras malai is an innovative dessert derived from rasgulla sweet. It originated in north-east subcontinent present Bangladesh a long time ago and is such a one of a kind delicious dessert that its popularity spread out through Subcontinent like wildfire. Ras malai is white, soft and velvety balls cooked in creamy milk. Ras malai is made with paneer curd, milk, sugar and fragranced with cardamom, saffron, kewra or rosewater. It tastes best when cold.

Do you know when they say that the internet keeps the receipts? Well, we have had a first-hand experience on this one. No one and absolutely no one can get away from the wrath of internet trolling. However, some people are more used to it than others, and Nida Yasir is one of them.

Nida Yasir has again become the victim of internet trolls thanks to her poorly researched and cringey interview. Her interview became the talk of the town after an old clip of her morning show resurfaced on the internet.

The Interview Guests 

Back in 2016, Nida invited two Nust students who invented a formula one racing car. The young men had developed the electric racing car and a group of people and were going to the Formula Student in the US. Despite being the interviewer, Nadia had no knowledge about the topic and hence started a series of dumb questions, which left the guests dumbfounded.

The Twitter Trolls 

As soon as the video went viral on the internet, netizens started questioning the research skills of the host. Since Nida couldn’t even comprehend the idea of a Formula car, she even went on to ask some weird questions from the guests.

This is what we say when someone is confused. We replace the word search with the brand name Google. Google now stands as a synonym for searching for something on the internet. 2. Facebook

Unlike Google, Facebook has not yet been associated with any verb. However, it has become a part of the routine. You do not just need it to keep in touch with your friends. In fact, just recently I came across a post on Facebook where a user wanted to know the latest happenings in Afghanistan from fellow netizens because she did not want to ‘google’ it.

3. Instagram

Instagram, too, is a way of life. You get up and you scroll through what your favorite idols have been up to. You get to learn about people’s opinions through the stories they post. But seeing how the platform is a way of life and how everyone feels connected whenever you bring Instagram into the conversation, other brands use it in their advertising.

Of course, where WhatsApp is concerned, the platform promoting itself would mean giving out timely updates.

“I had to film a campaign underwater, and I was not satisfied with my body. So I worked out a lot. However, the result on my face was quite drastic as my face shrunk. And then I went on to get fillers done even though I was not the right candidate, according to the doctor. ”

“As soon as I got the fillers and I looked at myself. I was like, how do I get this thing dissolved?” He added.

“I was like damn, this is not me. I need to get this off.”

Later on, the actor added that he plans to stay in the line of work to spread a positive message regardless of the previous decision about quitting the showbiz.

Nida Yasir’s Morning Show

Nida Yasir immediately called her to her show as was expected! Saima Sarwar broke down on the show several times speaking about her life story. She adds that my entire world is my mother. She is my friend, my teacher and my support. Saima Sarwar lost her father and brother at the age of 13 and now lives with her mother alone.

However, Saima had never told her mother about her clown activities at night. When her mother found out after she went viral, her reaction wasn’t expected. Initially, she went quiet for a few days but then she hugged her daughter and cried. Her mother said to her, “people cry for sons, I’m lucky I have you.”

What Did Virality Bring Her?

After her case went viral, Saima Sarwar was immediately contacted by the CM’s office. The CM has instructed medical institutes to bring in Sarwar’s mother for a check-up and provide the treatment and medicines. The cost will be borne by CM Buzdar himself.

Karachi Starts Its First Paediatric Cardiac Electrophysiology Programme at NICVD

Karachi’s medical facilities have improved significantly and especially for paediatric facilities. Pakistan’s medical scene has been average for a long time and now it’s heart-warming to see how the authorities have improved.

NICVD’s Latest Development

NICVD – the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases – has started Pakistan’s first Paediatric Cardiac Electrophysiology Programme. An eight-year-old boy successfully underwent the procedure. The child was a resident of Sukkur and had unstable heart attacks.

He was having repeated attacks of fast heart rates going up to 200 beats per minute. 

About The Programme

This is a huge development in the medical provisions of Lahore. NICVD Executive Director Prof Nadeem Qamar said, “This is the first time that an EP study and ablation procedure has been performed on such a young child in Pakistan.” The initiation was done by Dr Mohammad Mohsin who is trained in paediatric cardiology. 

Dr. Mohsin is an esteemed doctor who followed two years of training at the University of Alberta in Canada. He has also especially been hired by the NICVD to start the first paediatric cardiac electrophysiology programme in Pakistan”. More About The Procedure

Dr. Mohsin added, “Heart problems in which the heart beats too fast or too slow are not uncommon in children.” However, these can be cured. Dr. Mohsin believes specialised doctors can cure this through a complex procedure called electrophysiology study and ablation. Until now, it could not be treated in Pakistan. Now that there is a paediatric electrophysiologist in Pakistan, these children have hope.

However, this is not a one-man job. Dr. Mohsin believes that these complex procedures require dedicated teamwork. Cardiologists, paediatric cardiologists, technologists, anaesthetists and electrophysiology physicians, all work together. The head of cardiac electrophysiology at the NICVD, Dr Azam Shafquat, told me how NICVD has improved. Previously, the institute could only treat adult patients with catheter-based treatments.

We hope that we get to see some form of real-life implementation of this concept. It would be fun to see such a product and an even bigger thrill to be able to use it. Instead of brands looking for updates on creators or influencers, they can get access to data. Through that data, they can keep a better eye on the ongoings of TikTok. Apart from the demographics of posts, the brands can also see the posts with the most likes and the most comments. With this much info at hand, it is easier for marketing brands to make sure they are updated about the influencers they are following.

TikTok has not rolled out this API to the public, as of now, but we are expecting the launch quite soon. The companies can bring the data back to their platforms and augment the insights that they are providing to the customer base. However, the platform does have partners already, who are looking to utilize this API. One of them is Captiv8. Using this API, Captiv8 received more than 10 million views and a significant rise in several key metrics. Their campaign was specific and it helped!

Pakistan’s largest bank in the private sector, HBL, is celebrating its 50th-anniversary on Friday. The 335-feet tall skyscraper stands tall amidst the I. I Chundrigar Road, which is the hub of the financial district.

The building houses over 1700 employees and started its operations on September 4, 1971. With its state-of-the-art design and distinct structure, the building is known for being one of the prominent landmarks of the country. From being the tallest bank building in Asia, the tower remained one of the tallest buildings in Pakistan for decades.

The Significance Of Landmark

The building has been one of the most significant landmarks used for Ramadan and Eid moon sightings in the city. The building is also one of the main attractions on Independence day celebrations, and people flock to celebrate the day in front of the landmark. The plaza has also spread a message on different occasions as it lights up in honor of the day.

SHC Launches A Campaign Targeting Underage Driving in Karachi

The days of underage driving are over for the residents of Karachi as efforts are underway to control this illegal activity in the metropolitan hub. While many may not be able to enjoy their freedom as before, this has the potential to reduce accidents and reckless driving on the roads of Karachi.

What’s The Latest?

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has given orders to the police to begin measures to control underage driving in Karachi. As per the orders of SHC, the police have launched action against the underage drivers in Karachi.

The leading police officer, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic police Iqbal Dara, has also begun work on it. He has released a notification regarding the action being taken against drivers who are not yet 18. However, in this investigation, only drivers are not the target. Dara has directed the traffic officials to launch a drive against the underage drivers and the parents too in Karachi.

Sindh High Court’s Resentment

Only earlier this week, the SHC expressed its resentment over the increasing road misdemeanour cases coming due to underage drivers. The SHC was seriously concerned about the number of road accidents happening to teenagers. The main issue or cause of these accidents is reportedly underage bike riders who are reckless and irresponsible on the roads.

Thus, the SHC directed the inspector general of police (IGP) and DIG-traffic to begin taking measures that reduce these cases. There have been several cases where lives have been lost due to reckless driving or the gimmicks of underage drivers. It has also become increasingly common for boys to start driving by the age of 16.

The Campaign Underway

Efforts are underway seriously to prevent more cases and to weed out underage drivers. A single-judge bench headed by Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar, has instructed that a campaign be held across the province. Specially targeting Karachi, warnings should be issued to the parents of underage bikers. The campaign is focused on making sure that the parents are also held accountable for allowing their underage children on the road.

It comes as no surprise that these serious measures were taken as a result of a case. The bench primarily issued these directives while passing an order of a pre-arrest bail application in a relevant case. The pre-arrest bail was for two teenagers who were responsible for the death of another teenager in bike racing a few months ago.

THE Ranking: 21 Pakistani Universities Make It To World’s Top Universities

Pakistan has made quite a journey in the positive direction when it comes to the education level in the country. Just four years ago, in 2017, only four Pakistani universities made it to the 1000 top universities in the world. This year, fortunately, we see 21 universities on the list. It has been a positive year with regard to education anyway because not too long ago, we came across how 16 universities made it to the top Asian universities’ ranking as well.

Pakistan in THE Ranking 2022 

The list released for 2022 includes seven universities in the top 800 universities. If we look at the top 1000 universities then 11 universities had the honor. And out of the 1600 universities, there are 21 Pakistani universities. Shafqat Mahmood, the Federal Minister of Education shared these numbers in a tweet.

He also went on to elaborate further on Pakistan’s track record in global recognition within the education category.

In the tweet, he said “Pakistan is one of the world’s fastest-improving nations on key metrics for universities. We are among the top-5 nations for improvements in research citations and industry links.”

The UK team of the Times Higher Education (THE) met with the Federal Minister to congratulate Pakistan on its achievements. The team was comprised of Chief Knowledge Officer Phil Baty and Chief Data Scientist, Dr. Liz Shepard.

Data for the list 

The rankings were accumulated after analyzing a vast quantity of data. It was stated that almost 108 million citations and 4.4 million research publications were looked at. Alongside this, the team at THE also analyzed 430,000 data points of 2144 participating institutions.

After 22,000 respondents completed 140,000 reputation survey votes worldwide, only 1,662 institutions could compete for these rankings.

The top Pakistani university in the ranking this year is Quaid-i-Azam University. It was the same last year as well. This year the rank is between 501-600.

Public Comes To Help Mother & Daughter Who Were Harassed In Islamabad

In Islamabad, there has been a new case of harassment of women and this time, it was a mother and daughter targeted together. In a surge of women reclaiming the public space and using bikes to travel, these cases have become the norm. However, all hope is not lost. This event tells us we might just not be fighting in vain.

The Incident

A mother-daughter duo was riding on a bike when they started getting harassed in Islamabad. Two boys continuously came close to the women’s bike and bumped their front tires into the back tires of the women’s bike. This all was happening in public, in front of all the traffic, at the signal between F-11 and E-11.

While these women were helpless in women, two to three men did come to their rescue. They started surrounding the women’s vehicle in an attempt to guard them which was indeed successful. The harassers then ran away from the signal before it even opened.

⁠People Are Praising The Helping Men

The Facebook user who shared the incident was more than happy to see how the event played out. She stated, “This made my day. This is the moral responsibility of every man to stop evil things from happening around them. This is what Islam teaches us to stop by hand, by words or at least call it out.” While we’re not glad that incidents like this have to happen for us to weed out ‘good men’, it is nice to see some come to the rescue of terrified and helpless women. 

The Facebook user also added other statements which are food for thought. She urges people to normalise women on bikes. In her Facebook status she said, “Also, we need to normalise women riding bikes because only lower middle and poor ride bikes. And if women driving cars is totally normal, then why can’t riding a bike for the lower middle class be a normal thing?”⁠

Not too long ago, women questioned why the mode of transport they can claim in public themselves has always been a car. Why has the motorbike become so inherently masculine? Shell To Install 50,000 Charging Points For Electric Cars

The era of electric cars has begun. We can safely say that combustion engines are not the only ones on the market now. With time, a lot of the infrastructure can be altered to be in favour of electric cars. Speaking of electric vehicles, Shell has decided to install about 50,000 charging points.

While this does seem like a huge number, it is not to be done over the course of weeks or months. Instead, it is a plan set forth by Shell for Britain. It has long been stated that Britain intends to get rid of combustion engine cars completely. Now, they have made it an aim to do so by 2030. Yes, 9 years from now, you will not see petrol or diesel running cars in the UK. So, Shell is one of the major contenders now in the race to change the infrastructure.

Shell Charging Points

These charging points allow for EVs to be charged on the go. The more one has, the easier it is for them to move about here and there. Ubitricity is a company that was founded in 2008 in Germany. It was acquired by Shell and is responsible for vehicle charging units across Europe. They already have 3600 charging units in Britain, ranging from a lamp post used as one to a bollard.

Currently, the UK’s Government Office of Zero-Emission Vehicles provides 75% of the installation cost of these charging units. The company has agreed to pay the rest of the charges, so there may be a faster change of infrastructure. The country is certainly working hard to make sure emissions are at an all-time low. We hope they succeed in this and continue moving up.
