Gifts are an essential part of people’s love language. If you want to show how much someone matters to you, giving them a small gift is a gesture that leaves behind a significant impact. Gifts are also crucial for anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, and other occasions to remind your loved ones how much you value them. However, with rising inflation and the number of bills you have to pay, it becomes hard to splurge on gifts. Yet that shouldn’t stop you from spoiling your loved ones.

Since gifts are more about a gesture and less about the amount of money you have spent, it is totally fine if you can’t afford a huge surprise. Today, we are here at your rescue if you feel a little lost on what to gift your loved ones in case you are running out of the budget of under PKR 1000.

1. Notebook

A notebook is one of the most basic yet meaningful things you can gift someone. A pretty notebook or even a customised one will remind the person about you whenever they write on it. And what is better than being in the memory of someone you love the most?

2. Flowers

Flowers are one of the most beautiful things on mother earth. To date, people love receiving flowers even if they don’t say so. Getting a big fancy basket might be a little out of budget, but it doesn’t take much to spend on a decent small sized bouquet or even a few stems. At the end of the day, it’s the gesture that matters.

3. Candles

The candle market in Pakistan has boomed a lot lately. Many brands have come out with a variety of flavours and that too, of different sizes to cater to your taste. All you need to know is what kind of smell that person likes. And don’t forget to slip in a note that says, “Whenever you miss me, light up the candle, and I will be thinking of you too.”

Women have had to struggle quite a lot in terms of achieving their dreams. This is because in our country that is based on patriarchy, in order to exercise power, men would rarely allow women to enter a number of fields. But through constant struggle, women were able to get to where they wanted. Hence, this Air Force Day, we would like to pay tribute to the PAF pilots of the Pakistan Air Force who did not shy away because they were the only female batch mate and made us proud.

1. Ayesha Farooq

Even before Marium Mukhtar, Ayesha Farooq was the first pilot ready to fight for the sanctity of Pakistan. She was also part of the operation, Zarb e Azb, and as part of it, she bombed numerous Taliban hideouts as well in North Waziristan. Being the first fighter pilot, she was the role model of many, including Marium Mukhtar.

2. Saba Khan

Saba Khan belonged to the first batch of female pilots. Earlier, it used to be just an Ayesha Farooq or a Marium Mukhtar amongst numerous male pilots in a batch.

3. Nadia Gul

Nadia Gul was in the same squad as Saba Khan. They were a part of the 36 aviation cadets’ groups. In her mid-thirties now and still part of the airforce, Nadia shared, back when she was 26, that once she even blacked out for a few seconds but soon her survival instincts jumpstarted.

4. Marium Mukhtiar

After Ayesha Farooq, Marium Mukhtiar was the nation’s rising fighter pilot. She was ready to be the proud fighter pilot but achieved martyrdom while being on an operational training mission. Her jet crashed near Mianwali.

8. Kainat Junaid

Daughter of a squadron leader, Kainat is the first fighter pilot from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Marium Mukhtar as her role model, Kainat is all set to conquer the skies.

Much progress is being made on this avenue. In fact, just recently, a daughter of a traffic warden from Karachi was also selected to be part of GD pilot training. So yes, efforts are being made to give women the space to excel. And considering, we were named in Guinness World record as a country that had the first hijabi commercial pilot, women can totally excel and keep making us proud. Hopefully, the next Air Force Day will witness more female pilots in the PAF.

IBDP And Its Impact On University Admissions

Scholarly and peer-reviewed research on the IBDP and its impact on university admission rates globally has confirmed for decades that there is a strong correlation between IBDP graduates and their success rates for entering colleges and universities both nationally and internationally (Bunnell, 2015; Lai, Shum, & Zhang, 2014; Wright, Lee & Feng, 2018). Dr. Wootten, HoS at BNI stresses, “IBDP teaching at Beaconhouse Newlands Islamabad is data-driven, student-centered, and delivered in classes with a small student to teacher ratio”.

Decision-makers who reside over selection committee panels of higher education institutions prefer IBDP graduates because they bring qualifications related to critical thinking skills (Resnik, 2018), acquired research techniques including theory building and mixed methods (Fitzgerald, 2015), and a deep understanding of global citizenship and international-mindedness (van Oord, 2018; Walker, Lee, & Bryant, 2015). This is equally the case for the newly introduced IBCP, the Career-related Certificate (Hill, 2018).

The cited and acknowledged background for this established trend is the compulsory CORE (Extended Essay [EE] of a transdisciplinary focus of 4000 words, Creativity, Action & Service [CAS], and the course, Theory of Knowledge [ToK] (Fitzgerald, 2015). Sold connections to applied real-life learning scenarios are underpinned throughout the IBDP curriculum (Hill & Saxton, 2018; Wootten, 2017).

Severed Family Ties?

Muneeb Butt has rarely ever mentioned a strained relationship with his family. The actor is not really an open-book and most of his interviews tend to go in the direction of his career, wife or child. People have seldom questioned him on this unusual thing before. Could it be that the actor has strained or possibly even severed ties with his own family?

Not everyone has the luxury of a family who understands your motivations and aspirations and supports you with them. In many cases, many stars have had to go against their family’s wishes when they chose their careers.

Our guesses are that Muneeb Butt’s family was not all too agreeing with his choice of career. The reality may be different or it simply may be that his family doesn’t want to be in the limelight. Regardless, we wish the coming year brings even more joy to Amal Muneeb.

Digital Libas Wins UNDP-Jazz SDG Bootcamp In Balochistan

Quetta, 06 Sep 2021: Digital Libas, a remote work providing social enterprise from Quetta, is the winner of the SDG Bootcamp for Social Enterprises organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Jazz in Balochistan. The social enterprise will now participate in the national level SDG Bootcamp competition to be held later this year.

The runners up included Sustainable Design Studio, which provides green and sustainable design and architectural services to residential and commercial projects; and Rangoon Café, which seeks to establish a safe and productive space for people of different sects, cultures, and economic classes to interact and reduce discrimination in the region. Participants of the bootcamp learnt a variety of modules on how to market, scale up, and pitch their startups to potential investors.

Held online, the five-day bootcamp aimed at promoting social entrepreneurship and strengthening the startup ecosystem in the country. Ten social enterprises from Balochistan took part in the bootcamp, with nearly half of the participants being women. While majority of the participants were from Quetta, two enterprises took part from Mastung and Kalat as well. These social enterprises were trained in four modules: SDGs; Branding and Customer Engagement; Marketing and Digital Transformation; and Financial Management, Feasibility and Scaling.

Speaking during the session, Amir Goraya, Assistant Resident Representative, UNDP Pakistan said, ‘Pakistan is one of the youngest countries in the world. With youth unemployment standing at 8.54%, we need to find innovative solutions to help youth find ways to earn a decent living. Entrepreneurship presents a great opportunity for young people to use their skills and talents to develop their own business; social entrepreneurship goes even further and presents youth with a chance to play a lead role in talking development challenges of the country through leadership, social innovation and entrepreneurship.’

Syed Fakhar Ahmed, Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer, Jazz commented, “As a leader in digital technology, it is our duty to provide young people with a platform to succeed. I would like to congratulate the top three startups from Balochistan and hope they now implement the valuable lessons learnt and scale up their solution to make a positive impact on society.”

In December 2020, Jazz inked an agreement with UNDP’s Youth Empowerment Programme to conduct 20 bootcamps across Pakistan. Around 400 youth are expected to participate in the bootcamps this year, with  400 more planned for 2022. The focus will be on enterprises that relate to any of the Sustainable Development Goals, with 50% women participation. The most promising social venture ideas will be promoted at the international level and mentored by industry experts to further flourish their enterprises.

UNDP through Youth Empowerment Programme supports the Government of Pakistan in developing innovative and sustainable entry points for social engagement and economic empowerment of young Pakistanis. One of the key components of the Programme is to support youth entrepreneurship which not only empowers young people economically, but also spurs change and ensures inclusive development of the country. Through the SDG Bootcamps, UNDP and Jazz will be improving the startup ecosystem of the country and enabling youth to practically explore their innovative ideas and develop skills needed to succeed in the space.

Javed Afridi Speaks Up After Girls Share Their Experience With ‘Haier’

Known for much more, Javed Afridi is currently going viral for responding to a girl on Twitter who was tweeting about her experience with Haier. The girl accused the brand of gender discrimination amongst its customers. According to her account, she went to someone that she assumed to be a representative of the company who said that she would not be able to buy a product on instalments because she is a woman.

Alleged gender discrimination

The netizen complained that she finally felt stable in her life with a job, accommodation, and utility bills. But of course, to afford home appliances at a 100% payment is not possible in a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle. This is why she approached the store for instalment based purchase.

She ended her complaint with how she feels upset at only men being able to buy kitchen appliances in installments when it is the women having the kitchen responsibilities.

CEO Haier Pakistan denies allegations

CEO of Haier, Javed Afridi responded to the tweet and categorically denied the allegations. He said that the company does not have any such policy of not releasing products to women. And that is a secondary topic because the company does not even have an installment facility for the consumers. Hence, even if it was a man asking to buy a fridge in installments, the company will outright refuse the potential customer. It must come from the fact that given the facility of installments, numerous Pakistanis will avail it but never pay up.

Javed Afridi stated the facts that would let people know how Haier would not do such a thing. But the Twitter world had two differing opinions on the statement. There were some who pointed out that they did not like the CEO of Haier’s tone. They said that the tone was not consumer-friendly. In fact, if a customer was sharing an experience, even if Haier does not have such a policy, the company should follow up on who is degrading the brand’s name.

But some jumped up to defend the brand’s CEO as well. They clarified that there was nothing wrong with the tone of Javed Afridi. They said that he was basically stating the rules the organization works with. Neither was he disrespectful and nor was his company discriminating against any gender.

Social Media’s Harms

In February, another case went viral on social media which involved a crime using social media. At the start of 2021, a woman was accused of robbing a young boy in Karachi. The two had become friends on social media and the young boy came to Karachi on her request via a social media app.

They also had tapped his location via another app. The family intercepted them at Tariq Road and forcefully tried to take the boy away. The girl fled the scene until then. It was later discovered that she had already stolen Rs.70,000 from the boy and was demanding Rs.30,000 more.

How To Protect Children

Though these incidents have happened with young men and women alike, children are most at risk. In an ideal world, even teenagers should not be allowed to get phones. A simple Nokia one which can work well for communication should be good. However, nowadays even plenty of school work is through these social media apps— what can one do?

It can be a great sense of patriotism to celebrate Defence Day. Each year, on 6th September, we pay our respects to the armed forces of Pakistan. It is they, who are responsible for keeping peace in the regions. It is their brave soldiers who are standing at the border, day and night, as we sleep with peace. In light of this auspicious day, Hyundai Nishat has decided to pay homage to our national heroes. They deserve every bit of respect that they get and they deserve more. Let us dive into the spirit a little bit.

As we can see from our history, Pakistan has always had a strong-armed response to emergency situations. Their soldiers are the first to help if they are called in on an international or local matter. When the Holy Kabaa underwent a siege and capture in the 1970s, Pakistan sent SSG soldiers to free the innocent people trapped there.

It seems that their determination is unmatched and that is exactly how Hyundai’s recent video portrays them. As the Hyundai video starts, it talks about how these people are valiant and undeterred in the face of adversity.
