Massive Facebook Data Breach: 540 Million Records Leaked on Servers

massive facebook data leak

Facebook has once again hit rock bottom as another 540 million records were recently discovered on unsafe Amazon cloud servers in two batches.

Reportedly, the records were stored on an unprotected server, the data-monitoring firm UpGuard came across this information according to their blog.

However, what is interesting in this whole scenario is that Facebook was not the one to share these records on the servers. They were uploaded by third-party companies which violated the social media platform’s policies about sharing user-information publically.

As Facebook faces scrutiny over its data stewardship practices, they have made efforts to reduce third-party access. But as these exposures show, the data genie cannot be put back in the bottle. Data about Facebook users has been spread far beyond the bounds of what Facebook can control today. – UpGuard Blog Read

WhatsApp Group Block Prevents Random People Adding Users to Unwanted Groups

The 540 million records are not all user data, it was collected by a Mexican digital-media firm called Cultura Colectiva, which has a nice-looking, photo-heavy website in both Spanish and English devoted to everything and anything Latin American, as well as lots of pop culture, according to Tom’s Guide.

Cultura Colectiva urges users to share its stories on different platforms such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and even WhatsApp.  Anyone who wants to comment has to log into Facebook and stay logged in.

The records can be an aggregate of all the “comments, likes, reactions, account names, Facebook IDs and more,” as UpGuard described it. It may even store any and every comment ever posted on the platform.

Facebook Opens its First Innovation Lab In Pakistan!

According to UpGuard, the records do not contain any Facebook passwords or does not offer any insiders or pathway to Facebook accounts, however, it is a mine for those who are looking for other user data.

The second set of data was collected by At the Pool, a failed social-media startup aimed at ‘pooling’ people with common interests who happen to be close to one another geographically. At the Pool required Facebook authentication, similar to Tinder.

The set contained data about approximately  22,000 Facebook users including their Facebook user ID, likes, friends, photos, groups, and interests. Plaintext passwords were included, but they weren’t Facebook passwords.

The passwords are presumably for the ‘At the Pool’ app rather than for the user’s Facebook account, but would put users at risk who have reused the same password across accounts,-UpGuard blog post notes

The data exposed in each of these sets would not exist without Facebook, yet these data sets are no longer under Facebook’s control – the UpGuard post says in conclusion

“The Facebook platform facilitated the collection of data about individuals and its transfer to third parties,” it adds. “The responsibility for securing [Facebook user data] lies with millions of app developers who have built on its platform.”

This information just may be the tip of the iceberg with more waiting to be uncovered.

ReFest: Pakistan’s First Environment-Friendly Food Festival to be Held on 5th-7th April

refest-lead

To discourage single-use plastics and promote sustainable food consumption, WWF-Pakistan is organizing the country’s first environmental-friendly food festival in the city.

The festival, ReFest, aims to reduce food waste and raise awareness about eating food in a responsible way as well as adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives such as reduced use of single-use plastics.

The theme of the festival is to spread awareness about the cause and enjoy the festivals responsibly, as per WWF, festivals were one of the reasons of over littering and because of massive use of single-use plastic in food festivals.

Refest 2019

The idea is to promote the sense of responsibility among citizens that how we can enjoy and be responsible at the same time.

According to the Global Hunger Index 2016 report, Pakistan ranks as a country with a serious hunger level. Approximately 40% of food in the country is wasted which amounts to close to 36 million tons of food waste per year in the country.

This level of wastage is alarming when compared to the figure that 43% of the country’s citizens remain food insecure with 18% facing severe shortages.

Following the theme, WWF has specially imported eco-friendly cutlery from China which will be used in the festival so that there is no more wastage of single-use plastic. Special partnerships with waste management parties have been made to maintain the cleanliness after the festival.

WWF believes that if food is produced more sustainably, distributed fairly and consumed more responsibility, humans and planetary health can be improved. It also emphasizes that by changing consumption patterns and providing access to nutritious food for all, all forms of malnutrition can be tackled as well.

The festival is full is of entertainment and food varieties but in a responsible way, which is going to be huge as we usually don’t see the focus here and see pictures circulating after the food festivals on the internet with massive littering at the venue.

Honda Civic Facelift 2019 to Launch in Pakistan?

Honda Civic Facelift 2019

Honda Atlas Pakistan has teased the coming of a new vehicle on both their website and social media.

Though the teaser does not reveal much about what the automotive giant may have in store, however, the headlights do give away the biggest if clues!

The image reads, ‘Better Buckle Up!’ with activated hazard lights of a car which makes us wonder, does Honda plan on launch the Honda Civic Facelift 2019?

The 10th gen Civic was introduced about 3 years back, which means a facelift variant was expected.

This theory is second by the recent price revisions, as the brand announced that the revised prices of Civic variants will be ‘announced later’ and now a campaign has come forward.

We do not expect much changes to be made to the facelift variant given the revisions in the price and the constant variations in the currency.

Tax Amnesty Scheme 2019: PTI’s Latest Package to Boost Revenue

Tax Amnesty Scheme 2019

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced its tax amnesty scheme 2019, its first amnesty package on Tuesday.

Tax Amnesty Scheme 2019 by PTI: All You Need to Know

The scheme is an attempt to boost revenue from hidden domestic and offshore assets.

The government also announced that it intends on stopping the unchecked outflow of dollars via foreign currency accounts. This will help in amending the law and hidden domestic and offshore assets, reports ET.

Finance Minister Asad Umar shared:

An asset declaration scheme will be announced before the budget. The government has not yet finalised the tax rates for the amnesty scheme.

Jemima Responds to Fan’s Annoying Question About PM Imran Khan

For the newly risen government, the timing is very crucial. This is because the announcement comes just before the signing of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

An IMF is expected to visit Pakistan in the third week of April. On the other hand, the government also wants to use this new scheme to enhance its tax collection which has fallen short of its target in the first 9 months (of the fiscal year) by a whopping Rs 318 billion.

Overall, this will be the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) 11th tax amnesty scheme. In the past, all the previous schemes have failed to meet the desired results, applying more pressure on the current government to make ends meet with the desired results.

Asad Umar shared that the individuals were facing issues because of the implementation of a number of laws, including the Benami Transactions Prohibition Act. He further added that the government wishes to give a chance to its citizens to declare their assets hidden in and out of Pakistan.

At the occasion, Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar also shared that the FBR has served the first 6 noticed under the Benami Transactions Prohibition Act. Previously, PTI had raised questions towards the previous government, Pakistan Muslim League Noon – PMLN, for offering 4 tax amnesty schemes in a span of 5 years.

Until the government addresses the issues of smuggling and under-reporting, people will continue accumulating assets, and the government would keep on offering one amnesty scheme after another – Asad Umar had said at that time.

However, PTI has not yet taken steps to address the issues of under-invoicing and smuggling in its tenure so far. The government itself has a new responsibility as the direct taxes collection amount to only 37 percent of the total collection and most of it is collected by levying over 72 kinds of withholding taxes.

At present, there are three valuation rates and people pay taxes at deputy collector rates that are hardly 40 percent of the market value.

Influencers VS Celebrities: Effie Pakistan Jury Members Weigh in on the Trend

Influencers VS Celebrities:

The advertising world has seen a shift in the trend of using traditional celebrities for brand endorsements. Companies are now directing their budget towards influencer marketing.

WHO IS A SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER?

These are the people who have created a significant amount of social media following by creating content online that meets the interest of their target audience.

From YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now even TikTok, these influencers have accounts, blogs or vlogs to connect to a highly relevant audience.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER AND A CELEBRITY

By developing stellar careers, achieving feats and developing a presence on traditional media channels, stars become a household name which an influencer usually isn’t.

Consequently, celebrity endorsements are roped in by brands due to the mass exposure they can generate. The target audience assumes that the product has weightage if a media darling is associated with it.

Meanwhile, an influencer targets a niche market and due to the fact they are more active in the virtual world, and influencers usually garner more engagement than celebrities.

Consequently, brands are running after self-made influencers who might have a smaller following than a star but they boast authenticity while generating a greater buzz and engagement.

ARE INFLUENCERS BECOMING A THREAT TO CELEBRITIES?

A research was conducted on Twitter in 2016  that revealed that 40% of the consumers bought a product after seeing it used by an influencer.

Over the years, brand worldwide are now moving towards influencer marketing to harness the power of social media within a highly targeted group of people.

Similarly, in Pakistan, brands like Maybelline, Total Parco, AlKaram, Emirates and have been spotted using social media influencers to make it big in the market.

Guys!!!! My @maybelline video is here! And I'm SO excited and SO proud of how it has turned out. It was the best surprise to be picked by them and for the brand to embrace diversity by picking someone who wears a head scarf. My experience shooting with their team was brilliant too. The other girls in the video were SUPER nice @rebelliousbrownie @amal asif @ayeshakhalid_ @fzm_boutique_fitness @glitterandpopbymahnoorj @rantsofadesibride. It was the most empowering experience to be with all of them! LITERALLY no words to express how GREAT I feel. And you know what – none of it would have happened without the support of YOU guys. Thank you for your love and duaas, always! 💖 @getsetmakeuppk

Recently, Pakistan Advertisers Society (PAS)  partnered with US-based Effie Awards, a prestigious global network recognizing effective marketing communication. The first jury round took place on the 15th and 16th of March at Marriott Hotel, Karachi.

Brandsynario asked a few jury members present at the session their opinion on the Celebrity Vs Influencer trend.

Khadija Hashimi, Head of Corporate Affairs and Brand & Marketing, Standard Chartered Pakistan stated:

I still see a lot of celebrities out there. but I think it is the turn of influencers, especially to see what’s happening across the boundaries. influencers are playing a key role especially with the millennials these days. It is a positive trend as long as we move towards the true influencers.

Humayun Farooq, Marketing Director – Health, Reckitt Benckiser Pakistan stated:

Now that the world has changed and I have seen it changing in the last decade and a half in front of me,  I believe influencers are much more real. They are the people the audience can relate to much much more than a celebrity who lives a life which is much larger that that of individuals, common people as you call them.

They are close to the hearts of people and that’s where the shift is happening. It is going to happen even more in Pakistan in days to come.

Seems like both influencers and stars have their share of pros and cons when it comes to brand endorsements. Once brands can determine what works best for them, then the real deal begins.

PAS Holds Effie Awards’ Jury Second Round

Effie-Awards'

Pakistan Advertisers Society (PAS) recently partnered with US-based Effie Awards, a prestigious global network recognizing effective marketing communication, and held the second jury round on the 29th of March at Marriott Hotel, Karachi.

Effie Awards with its 51 national programmes, 4 regional awards and 1 global award, leads, inspires and champions the practice and practitioners of marketing effectiveness, whose efforts are celebrated with the award.

With the affiliation with Effie, PAS Awards, which have been highly respected in the industry have now been replaced by Effie Awards Pakistan.

To contest for the renowned title, the competition was open to all marketing entries that ran in Pakistan between the period of July 1, 2017, till September 30, 2018. The first jury round took place on the 15th and 16th of March and reviewed 200 entries. The second jury round took place on the 29th of March and reviewed 87 shortlisted entries.

The entries for round 2 were compared with each other horizontally within their categories, compared to round 1 where entries were judged stand alone.

The jury entailed more than 40 admirable leaders from the industry who are experts in their fields of marketing, advertising, academia, creative, media and research from around the world and have a positive track record of exemplary performance working in their areas.

It was vital that the jurors belonging from one industry judged cases opposite to their interesting categories to eliminate biases and conflict of interest. To ensure this, the jury was divided into 4 groups; each group containing 10 to 11 people. The group was perfectly balanced with a mix of creatives, marketing and advertising heads to media and research executives. Each group was monitored by a moderator who had professional experience in holding a jury before. The jury members were nominated through an online process and included top tier management of some of the biggest brands of Pakistan.

It included titles such as; CEO, RB Pakistan, Board Director (Foods & Refreshment) Unilever, Creative Director, (Spectrum Communications), CEO Starcom and Manager Director Mondelez International. The entries were judged on demonstrated excellence in 4 key areas: definition of objectives, strategic development, creative execution, and measurement of results.

Each jury member examined written content and viewed creative reels in order to score a campaign. The scores were not discussed within members. A concluding award gala will be held in May 2019 and the winners will be awarded a Gold, Silver and Bronze trophy. A special recognition award, the Grand Effie Award will also be awarded to the most effective and standout campaign of the year.

The Effie Pakistan finalists and winners will also receive credit in the Global Effie Index, which identifies and ranks the most effective agencies, marketers, brands, networks, and holding companies by analyzing finalist and winner data from all Effie competitions worldwide. Announced annually, the Effie Index is the most comprehensive global ranking of marketing effectiveness.
