Lux Style Awards 2019: Meesha Shafi’s Brother Faris Shafi Withdraws his Nomination

The famous Lahore-based actor, rapper, and songwriter Faris Shafi recently took to Twitter to request that his song be removed from Lux Style Awards 2019 nominations.

It is to be noted that Faris is Meesha Shafi’s bother and has withdrawn his award in light of the ongoing LSA 2019 controversy, involving the Meesha-Ali Zafar harassment case.

Other celebrities including Meesha Shafi, Eman Suleman, The Sketches, Generation, Saima Bargfrede, Fatima Nasir, and Jami also announced their rejections of LSA 2019 earlier.

Jami even went so far as to throw his awards on the street.

Shafi’s track, ‘Clap’ was nominated by Lux Style Awards 2019 for Best Song.

Faris Shafi and Talal Qureshi were both part of it, so Shafi also rejected the nomination on behalf of Talal.

Last year, Ali Zafar faced backlash after he was accused of undermining Faris Shafi’s song on Patari.

In an interview to The Express Tribune earlier, Shafi had said that he wrote about all the things Pakistan is being forced to go through every day.

It seems that he is acting upon the same by withdrawing from LSA 2019 nominations and refusing to share the stage with an alleged harasser.

Nestlé & Akhuwat Join Hands to Empower BISP Beneficiaries

In developing countries, where the population is largely undocumented, unbanked and does not possess credit history nor the ability to provide collateral, the rural segment of the population’s ability to avail access to formal lending is thereby, limited.

According to the World Bank Global Findex Report, nearly 1.7 billion adults remain unbanked and have no access to formal financial services. It is also pertinent to mention that the gender gap in terms of bank accounts is high in developing countries like Pakistan.

Recently, Nestlé Pakistan and Akhuwat partnered to empower Nestlé’s Rural Women Sales Agents enrolled under the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP).

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed under which, Nestlé has provided a grant of PKR 2 million to Akhuwat to extend interest-free loans to Nestlé-affiliated BISP beneficiaries in expanding their businesses, in districts of Renala, Okara, Sheikhupura and Pindi Bhattian.

Through this partnership with Akhuwat and BISP, Nestlé Pakistan has paved the way in working towards contributing to the goals of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy, which lays out the national vision, framework, action plan and targets for financial inclusion in Pakistan.

In contrast, with conventional lending, difficulties in loan procedures include the provision of collateral, loan documentation and processing time and traveling a long distance from the village to withdraw the disbursement amount in cash.

In order to support the development of socially sustainable enterprises, Nestlé Pakistan has facilitated its BISP beneficiary base through the provision of interest-free, micro-finance lending which provides the beneficiaries with the financial muscle to build upon their enterprise while at the same time, ensuring ease of repayment of the loan,

“Today is a big day for our Rural Women Sales Agents. The Nestlé-Akhuwat partnership will allow our Sales Agents to avail interest-free micro-loan facility. It has been proven time and time again, that when women have the power to make, spend, save, and control their own money, they make gains not only for themselves but also for their families and communities”, said Freda Duplan, CEO Nestlé Pakistan.

Nestlé’s BISP Rural Women Sales Program focuses on graduating women benefiting from BISP out-of poverty. The program is based on Public Private Partnership that emphasizes on creating sustainable solutions for addressing some of the key issues being faced by rural women in Pakistan such as malnutrition and lack of livelihood opportunities. It has to date graduated 500 beneficiaries and this number will increase to 5,000 in the next three to four years.

Dr. Amjad Saqib, CEO Akhuwat, while sharing his views said, “We are glad to partner with Nestle and are confident that it will enable women under Nestlé’s BISP Rural Women Sales Program scale up their entrepreneurial ventures and eventually graduate out of poverty.”

Waqar Ahmad, Head of Corporate Affairs, Nestlé Pakistan, said, “Our philosophy of creating shared value (CSV) is unique and a long term approach through collective action, partnerships and support of stakeholders can generate sustainable economic value, in line with UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

“The Nestlé-Akhuwat partnership is a transformative collaboration which will help us build rural women as social entrepreneurs with Akhuwat over the next three years and enhance Nestlé’s BISP beneficiary base,” he added.

Nestlé Pakistan partnered with Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) in 2017 to provide livelihood opportunities to BISP beneficiaries. The Nestlé BISP Rural Women Livelihood Program has enabled BISP beneficiaries, often referred to as “poorest of the poor” women, to earn a livelihood for themselves and their families. It is a successful Public Private Partnership model aiming to create a sustainable solution towards addressing some of the key issues like malnutrition, financial exclusion, and lack of livelihood opportunities that rural women face in Pakistan. To date, more than 500 BISP beneficiaries have been enrolled as Rural Sales Agents across 12 districts of Punjab and Sindh. Furthermore, Nestlé Pakistan is empowering BISP beneficiaries through improving their nutrition knowledge and has reached out to more than 1000 BISP beneficiaries in 2018.

Nestlé- Akhuwat partnership will help improve access to finance in rural areas for rural women, thereby reducing inequalities and supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals.

 

 

 

Nasir Khanjan Responds to Samaa TV Anchor’s Rude Behavior During Morning Show

The social media sensation, Nasir Khanjan was recently invited to Samaa TV’s Morning show ‘Naya Din’.

Apparently, things went south after the morning show’s anchor made him uncomfortable by badgering him with demeaning questions and statements.

It is no secret that Nasir Khanjan remains controversial for videos which are often deemed “against the cultural norms of the society’.

Consequently, he was invited to attend Naya Din for an interview and the host, Muhammad Shuaeb questioned Khanjan for a contentious video that went viral on the internet.

Calling it ‘vulgar’, the anchor seemingly adopted a bullying tone to school Nasir for posting it on social media.

However, Nasir remained cool and replied to the accusations without losing his calm.

Thanking his fans for the support, Nasir stated that he felt insulted and had no clue about the questions beforehand.

He added that it is important for channels to treat their guest respectfully and promote them in a positive manner.

Schengen Visa Costs Expected to go up by Year End

A proposal by the EU Commission to amend the Schengen Visa policy has now been formally adopted by the European Parliament.

Increasing Schengen visa cost is also a part of the changes given in the proposal.

If the Council approves the amendment within the next two months, all visa applicants will be required to pay a fee of €80 instead of €60 by the end of 2019.

The decision has been welcomed by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Migration and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos.

The new rules will facilitate tourism, trade and business while enhancing our security standards to detect those who pose a threat or have no right to enter the EU. They will also help improve cooperation with non-EU countries on the return and readmission of irregular migrants- Avramopoulos said.

Whilst EU Member States are among the world’s leading tourist destinations, lengthy and cumbersome procedures can deter tourists from travelling to Europe, redirecting investment and spending to other countries and affecting the EU’s economy negatively.

In 1950, the founder Haji Ali Muhammad launched the country’s first soft drink brand and its tagline ‘Dil Bola Pakola’ became a national sensation.

Over the years, the company has extended its product portfolio and has launched variants like Pakola Orange, Pakola Lychee, Pakola Raspberry, Pakola Fresh Lime, and Pakola Vino.

However, the manufacturers of Pakola ‘Mehran Bottlers’ are now planning to take a giant leap in the beverage industry and are launching a new brand.

Pakola has been teasing the new product on its social media and from the looks of it, the new entrant is “Pure Drinking Water”

The video showcases a bottle with a flowing waterfall, signifying that a water brand is on its way.

Pakistanis were quick to guess the hint on Pakola’s Facebook page.

However, some marketing critics on the Facebook group ‘Khalid Alvi Marketing Next’ pointed out that the creative concept is old and copied.

It is to be noted that prominent brands like Aquafina, Dasani, and Nestle already dominate the bottled water market in Pakistan.

Pakola will have to use strong promotional strategies to earn a chunk in the market. However, Pakistanis are loyal to the green-colored soda brand and chances are high that fans would trust in the credibility of its bottled water.

Will Pakola struggle or will it be successful in winning the hearts of the market? Let’s wait and watch.

The unfortunate incident caught the attention of Ducky Bhai after which he took to his social media account and condemned the attack.

He wrote:

Just heard about the assault on Froggy at Sham’s meet & greet today. This type of disgusting behavior should never be tolerated at any cost, especially on a woman. Fans should enjoy the occasion by staying in their limits. This is not what I or any other YouTuber encourage to do.

In Game Changer, Shahid Afridi said that he will not allow his daughters to play Cricket or any outdoor sport for that matter.

Afridi has four daughters, namely Aqsa, Asmara, Ansha, and Ajwa.

He said his girls have permission to play any sport they like, as long as it is indoors.

He also added that they will not be allowed to play Cricket and other outdoor sports owing to social and religious reasons.

“Aqsa is in the 10th grade, Ansha is in the ninth. They’re both great at sports and even better in academics”

“Ajwa and Asmara are the youngest and love to play dress-up. They have my permission to play any sport, as long as they’re indoors. Cricket? No, not for my girls. 

Well aware of the kind of response he will probably receive from feminists on his stance, he lashes out at feminists and further adds:

“It’s for social and religious reasons that I’ve made this decision and their mother agrees with me. The feminists can say what they want; as a conservative Pakistani father, I’ve made my decision”

Update: Chinese automotive manufacturer Changan has officially launched Changan Karvaan in Pakistan.

The brand rolled out its first locally assembled vehicle in Pakistan on May 2nd, 2019.

The Changan Karvaan is now the first official variant to be assembled in Changan’s assembly plant in Karachi which has a production capacity of 30,000 vehicles per annum.

Changan has selected Pakistan as a strategic export base for right-hand drive (RHD) markets which means that vehicles produced in Pakistan will be sold to Changan’s distributors in South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and other RHD countries. -Danial Malik, the CEO of Master Motors

Bloomberg shares that Apple iMessage is likely to receive a new update soon in which users will have the option to keep a display image and name. With WWDC hardly a month away, Apple might announce this exciting news at the platform.

Furthermore, the reports suggest that iMessage is also expected to get a “dedicated menu in the conversation view to send sticker versions of Animojis.” The features are expected to be rolled out for MacOS and WatchOS as well.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also called Apple’s iMessage feature the “biggest competition” to the world’s biggest social media platform. He added, “Apple bundles iMessage as the default text app and it’s still ahead.”

Google and Apple have removed 3 dating apps from their respective stores after it was found that they were being used by predators to prey on children.

Reportedly, the applications violated minor privacy laws by allowing children under the age of 13 to sign up. Furthermore, collected their data which could allow sexual predators to contact the children as per CNBC’s report.

It was also shared that the agency alleged that the Wildec apps collected “users’ birthdates, email addresses, photographs, and real-time location data,” nonetheless took no action to remove users 13 years or under despite claiming they had privacy policies.

From the official statement:

The letter also noted that allowing adult users to communicate with children poses a serious health and safety risk. Several individuals have reportedly faced criminal charges for allegedly contacting or attempting to contact minors using Wildec’s apps, the letter added.

The letter further noted that Wildec appeared to be aware that children under 13 were using all three apps and, given this, was obligated to comply with COPPA’s requirements.

Google Warns Users Over Critical Chrome Bug Being Used by Hackers!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued an additional parental advisory making it explicitly clear that the apps could make minors vulnerable to sexual predation:

FastMeet, Meet24 and Meet4U let children create public dating profiles. So, adults can use these apps to connect with children. If that’s not scary enough, the apps collect users’ real-time location data. In other words, adults – including sexual predators – can search by age and location to identify children nearby.

In recent times, it was found that age-restriction does not stop children from signing up for applications which are meant to be for adults. The UK authorities had “investigated more than 30 incidents of child rape since 2015 on dating apps like Tinder and Grindr.” Other popular games and platforms like Fortnite and Minecraft have also been the victims of child predators in the past.

Parents are advised to keep an eye out on their children’s activities for their own safety and well being.

According to a report by World Bank in 2017, Pakistan has the world’s lowest rate of women’s entrepreneurship with only one percent of female entrepreneurs compared to 21% male entrepreneurs.

The Bank said less than 12% of firms in Pakistan have female participation in ownership compared to more than 18% in South Asia and 34% globally. Only 6% of these firms have a majority of female ownership, which is nearly half the South Asian average of 11%.
