Asia Cup 2020: Pakistan to Host the T20 Tournament

Asia Cup 2020

Pakistan will host Asia Cup 2020 according to the decision made by the Asain Cricket Council (ACC).

The meeting took place in Singapore where Pakistan was represented by  Pakistan Cricket Board (PC) Chairman Ehsan Mani and Managing Director Wasim Khan.

The decision of which city will be entertaining the tournament is yet to be decided after it is announced preparations will kick-start accordingly.

ACC meeting was attended by many representatives from around the continent including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and India.

Pakistan will host the tournament in September 2020, one month prior to the T20 World Cup in Australia.

India to Boycott Asia Cup 2020?

Given the political situations between both neighboring countries, there is a chance that India will boycott from the tournament. This will not come as a shock to many as India has boycotted against matches and tournaments.

Recently, while talking to the Indian media, former Indian cricketer now turned politician Gautam Gambhir said in a statement that team India should boycott their World Cup 2019 match against Pakistan.

Hence, if the tournament is hosted by Pakistan, there is a very high probability India will walk out.

Honda Civic & CR-V Engines Are Causing Problems!

honda civic

If you own a Honda Civic or Honda CR-V, then you will have to pay close attention!

This is specifically for the 2017-18 CR-V and 2016-2018 Civic models that are equipped with the 1.5-Liter Turbocharged 4-cylinder.

According to Consumer Reports (CR), a memo sent to Honda dealers was uncovered in which there were mentions of complaints in regards to gasoline seeping in the engine oil. This can lead to potential vehicle stalling in the cooler weather.

However, the CR shares that owners have been experiencing this situation during the summers as well!

Atlas Honda Bike Prices Increased by up to PKR 2,000!

The memo claims that the oil in these engines can be diluted as a result of software settings or potential hardware failures. This kind of problem can lead to a lack of power and cylinder misfires or engine noise.

Last year, Honda had offered to fix CV-Rs with the same engine imagine problems faced in the winters, this accounted for approximately 239,000 vehicles in the US. Although the manufacturer did offer free services, it appears that an engine software update is essential.

If not resolved quickly, this can lead to impactful damage to the internal engine and result in serious consequences.

Abnormal oil dilution remains extremely rare, especially outside of extremely cold weather. In extreme and rare cases in the cold-weather states, where abnormal oil dilution has occurred prior to a vehicle receiving the software updates, this extension will provide extra time for any undetected engine damage to become apparent and be covered by the warranty. -Honda spokesperson

The Japanese automaker will be extending the powertrain warranties on more than 1 million vehicles in the US to fix the problem once and for all.

Huawei Ban: Apple’s Fate in Huawei’s Hands?

Huawei Ban

The Huawei ban in the US has lead to a series of consequences to a number of businesses in the tech and telecom sector.

Not only has the ban caused trouble for many other companies, but it has also started another conversation, Apple’s fate!

Many individuals, analysts, and professionals are discussing what is Apple’s fate in China? The tech giant is already having a hard time in the country and sales and demand has witnessed a decrease.

If Huawei founder Dr. Ren Zhengfei takes a stand against the US-based brand than this will start a tech war on a whole new level. During an interview with Bloomberg, Zhengfei said he would “be the first to protest” if China were to impose a similar ban on Apple’s US-made iPhone devices in China.

Google’s Ban on Huawei Temporarily Lifted!

This shows that he has no interest in taking revenge, in fact, he has mentioned that the decision has made Huawei more active and more serious about business. The tech company had anticipated the move thus has created its own OS as a backup plan.

Apple is the world’s leading company. If there was no Apple, there would be no mobile internet. If there was no Apple to help show us the world, we would not see the beauty of this world. Apple is my teacher – it’s advancing in front of us. As a student, why should I oppose my teacher? I would never do that -Huawei Founder Dr. Ren Zhengfei

Huawei overtook Apple to become the second biggest smartphone maker right behind Samsung just under a year ago. Zhengfei believes that Huawei can still grow and prosper despite the US ban as everything is not about profit and just surviving.

Of the chips we’ve been using, half are from US companies and a half we produce ourselves. If the US imposes further restrictions on us, we’ll reduce our purchases from the US and use more of our own chips, -Zhengfei reasoned

Rewind back to just a couple year ago, in mid-2016, Chinese youth had smashed, burnt, and thrown away their iPhone in the form of a protest against the US. Tim Cook has never shy-away from his views about seeing China as Apple’s future biggest customer.

Huawei Trolls Apple by Giving Out Free Power Banks To iPhone Fans!

However, after the youth called in the protest, not only did they replace the iPhone, but had forced China to shut down the iBook Store, iTunes Movies, and highly impacted the sales.

The Chinese public, as optimistic and positive as they are, are deeply patriotic and nationalistic, especially people who are younger.

Apple is very closely associated with the United States, and you are seeing people picking the closest symbol they can think of to demonstrate against. -James Roy of the research firm China Market Research Group

Now imagine, if Huawei does root for a ban on Apple in China, not only would the youth join in, the country will be united once again meaning that Apple’s vision of China as their biggest customer goes down the drain along with their profits.

We already knew that Apple products being manufactured in China will cost cheaper than being completely manufactured in the states.

According to Seeking Alpha, if China doesn’t ban iPhones, nationalism alone may consume 3-5% Apple’s revenue in the next 12 months and decrease Apple stock price by 6%. The fact that Apple’s stock only lost 5-6% since the wake of the Huawei ban suggests that the market does not believe China will ban iPhones.

Time will tell which way the situation turns. What do you think about the fate of both brands?

When Alia Bhatt becomes the face of any brand in India, then that same company approaches me to represent them in Pakistan. So I am very thankful towards Alia Bhatt and if I ever meet her in person, I would be over the moon.

Debit & Credit Cards May be Replaced by Mobile Payment System in Pakistan

mobile payment system

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudry Hussain has planned major changes for Pakistan. After officially launching the Moon Sighting Pakistan website, the minister now wants to introduce mobile-payment systems.

If we compare the western world and other developed countries, we can observe the trend of cash-less and now card-less transaction.

Everything even buying groceries can be done by a simple scan from your phone. The science and technology minister also intends to introduce a similar concept in Pakistan.

TikTok’s Parent Company is Secretly Working on a Smartphone!

If so, cards will be replaced, which can be a good and a bad thing.

Advantages of Mobile Payment System

There are a number of benefits mobile payment system have over debit and credit card systems. They include:

  1. No need to carry cash or card in your wallet
  2. Keep a track of all transaction with complete history
  3. All essentials including your bank will be on a single device
  4. Keeping up with the global trend
  5. A faster way to check out items as compared to counting the cash or charging the card
  6. Will help you save on transaction fees

Disadvantages of Mobile Payment System

Where there are many advantages, there are also some disadvantages that cannot be overlooked while introducing this kind of payment system in Pakistan. The disadvantages include:

  1. Lack of awareness amongst individuals and lack of mobile payment systems
  2. If your phone is stolen, the data on the phone is at high risk, security concerns
  3. Chance of your data being hacked by scammers and other evil-doers on the web

While technology does have its pros and cons, this still does not mean that this is the future of Pakistan or that this technology cannot be protected.

However, if this technology is indeed adapted to, that means that Pakistan will be working its way to being a card-free country.

Video of LUMS Students Dancing on ‘Pink Day’ Sparks Debate

Students of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) have found themselves in the eye of a social media storm after an inside video went viral on the internet.

The 10-sec clip showcases LUMs students donned in pink and grooving to a tune inside the university’s premises.

All hell broke loose on social media after the video made its way on the internet.

Leading Lahore University Imposes New Dress Code for Students

It all started when a senior columnist and commentator Irshad Bhatti shared it on Twitter and condemned it by claiming” ‘yeh hai LUMS university ka haal’

Komal Aziz Got Supsended from IBA & The Reason Will Surprise You!

Apparently, the students were celebrating ‘Pink Day’ in the university and were dressed as per the theme of the event.

The video has ignited a fiery debate and consequently, #LUMS started trending on Twitter.

Keyboard warriors were quick to protest against LUMS students dancing during the holy month of Ramadan.

The rest defended LUMS and claimed that the clip was harmless.

Many highlighted that there are far worse problems that social media should be worrying about.

Last month, LUMS came under fire after a ‘sexist’ Facebook group of LUMS male students and alumni got exposed.

It was reported that the group circulated ‘misogynistic’ content and prompted its students to protest in front of the Office of the Student Affairs at the University, to take action against the group and students involved.

Later LUMS released a statement to ensure that it promotes” mutual respect’ and will “sensitize the community at large on gender issues”.

Shahid Afridi Grills Gautam Gambhir Over Ridiculous Match Suggestion

Former skipper Shahid Afridi has called out former Indian cricketer Gautham Gambhir for a senseless suggestion.

Ghambhir had suggested for India to boycott its World Cup 2019 match against Pakistan.

During a press conference on Saturday, Afridi called-out the cricketer-turned-politician claiming his remarks as foolish and criticized Indians for electing a candidate who has literally ‘no sense’.

Ghambhir was elected from East Delhi on BJP’s ticket. While addressing his nation on a local TV channel, he said that the country should boycott the match at any cost.

Game Changer Controversy: Gautam Gambhir Hits Back at Afridi

We can’t play with the sentiments of our country. Two points are not important than the lives of our soldiers, but for this, the entire country needs to be on the same page. We should have the courage to lose points even it’s the first match or the finals. Even if we boycott playing the World Cup final against Pakistan, the country must stand together- Gautam Gambhir

In response to the statement, Afridi spoke up and lashed out saying:

Do you think it is sensible what Gautam Gambhir has said? Does this sound like something a sensible person would say? Do educated people talk like this?

The Afridi-Gambhir Clash

Before this commotion, Gambhir had called out Afridi for the content in his latest biography called the Game Changer.

Afridi referred to him as a person with no personality and an attitude problem as well as a  cross between Don Bradman and James Bond.

To this, Gambhir spat back on Boom Boom by offering to take him to a psychiatrist. Lala did not wait to respond back! He tweeted:

The Indian Government doesn’t normally give visas to our people, but I will welcome everyone from India to Pakistan. Our people and our Government have always welcomed Indians and as for Gautam, I will get a visa arranged so that his treatment can be done here.

We have yet to see if India takes the newly elected politician’s advice or locks horns with Pakistan at the World Cup 2019 format.

Airlift Pakistan

There’s a new ride-hailing app in Pakistan and it’s getting a wave of reviews from users already. The advent of popular ride-hailing apps Careem and Uber (which are now one) in Pakistan was great news for many.

Be it young working women who wanted to navigate the city without waiting for public transport on the roads, or anyone who needed a more convenient, comfortable way to commute to their workplace.

However, while both apps come with the options of cars, bikes, and even rickshaws, they did not include one of the cheapest and most widely used public transport service- buses!

Their buses and vans are clean with comfortable seating arrangements, and all the routes cost only PKR 49.

Moreover, their cost remains unaffected by the hike in petrol prices, which is surprising!

Airlift Routes

Currently, Airlift runs routes across most major areas in Lahore. You can view their routes on their app and also suggest new routes within the mobile application.

Moreover, you can also reach out to them at info@rideairlift.com if you have any questions.

The app was launched recently, in February of this year, and has already started gaining traction and appreciation on social media.

People are saying that it looks quite promising.

Some are even saying their travel time has reduced to half, all thanks to Airlift.

However, the app has currently only launched and began functioning in Lahore.

We hope that the ride-hailing app will soon begin operating in Karachi too.

Moon Sighting Pakistan’s Launch Sparks Controversy on Social Media

Moon Sighting Pakistan

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry announced the official launch of Moon Sighting Pakistan.

Moon Sighting Pakistan has been launched by the Government of Pakistan with an aim to curb moon sighting ‘controversy in the country’ according to the website.

Each year, there is always a debate going on in regards to when the moon will be spotted and when will Islamic events be held accordingly.

Some say that they have spotted the moon whereas others claim no such moon sightings have been spotted. Thus, as a solution, the government has introduced this platform.

It shows the main Islamic dates and months for the next five years based on scientific evidence. The government also plan on introducing the Moon Sighting Pakistan application for the citizens of the country very soon.

The introduction of this platform has sparked a controversy on social media as many religious scholars and those who sit in the Ruet-e-Hilal (moon-sighting) committee have declared this method of moon sighting in Pakistan unethical and irrelevant.

Noted religious scholar and head of the unofficial Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Qasim Ali Khan Mosque, Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai shared that he has no issues with the launch of the site, however, he added that the site should not be referred to for observing Ramazan and Eidul Fitr.

However, Mufti Muneeb, Chairman Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee, has advised Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain to refrain from commenting on religious matters.

Jeeto Pakistan was offered to me and I wondered what they are making me do. It was supposed to be a replica show.

And we were supposed to copy a game show as it is like our favorite used to do. One day I got angry and said that this has to end

However, he realized his fault and was quick to rectify it.

Pakistani Government Might Retract Tax Exemptions from Salaried Individuals

The government of Pakistan might withdraw income tax concessions that were granted to salaried individuals in 2017.

The government is considering this change for the upcoming budget (2019-2020) owing to the sharp 44% decline in the collection amount during July-March 2018/2019 (53.48 billion) as compared to that of the last fiscal year July-March 2017/2018 (95.15 billion).

“These changes brought about a substantial decrease in the withholding taxes collected through various government and private withholding agents,

the finance ministry said in a presentation in March 2019.

Revenue impact of the change remained Rs32.4 billion during the period from July 2018 to February 2019. It is estimated that total revenue loss on this account would be around Rs50 billion in the current financial year.”

Last year in April, the government had relieved salaried individuals through the Income Tax Amendment Ordinance of 2018.

Eid-ul-Fitr 2019: 5 Special Trains Announced for Passengers in June

Individuals falling under the range of 400,000 PKR and 800,000 PKR were to pay a nominal income tax amount of 1,000 PKR annually. While those falling between 800,000 to Rs1.2 million PKR were to pay PKR 2,000 per year.

The amendment was applied by PML-N from July 1, 2018, and acted as a major relief for the salaried class.

However, after the amendment was applied, tax contribution by provincial, semi-government, and corporation employees declined 53 percent to Rs5.7 billion during the first nine months of the current fiscal year July-March 2018/2019.

Therefore, the IMF has recommended the government to retract tax exemptions from various individuals and sectors.

Moreover, IMF and Pakistan have agreed over the 39 month extended fund facility program to support Pakistan with its balance of payments issue.

The program has not been approved by IMF’s board yet, though.

Likewise in Pakistan, digitization has witnessed a massive growth in the number of women making a career in this field alongside men.

There are a number of females who have fought their way to the top of the digital ladder and are crushing stereotypes weaved around working women in Pakistan. However, their experience across the digital marketing landscape remains unheard.

We interviewed four female leaders, employed at East River Digital Agency and encouraged them to share their success stories with our readers.

For women, becoming a leader in the digital marketing world can be quite a challenge. However, these boss ladies at East River Digital are playing a major role in accelerating the agency and have proved to be valuable organizational assets.

Mother of Accounts- Mariyem Abdi

Working at East River for quite some time as the Head of Accounts, Mariyem’s managerial responsibilities include looking after a team of account managers.

She looks at each person’s expertise in a particular area, their leadership skills and how they work under pressure and manage situations.

How has the progress of digital marketing in Pakistan helped you evolve in this industry?

Mariyem: Digital marketing was a fascinating but abstract concept when it was first talked about and implemented in Pakistan. Since then, I have seen a tremendous amount of change. It has evolved so brilliantly and helped me curate the perfect ideas to execute with our campaigns that I do not have to think twice about the possibilities that this field provides me with.

Share with us one achievement that you think is the highlight of your digital career.

Mariyem: When I first started at the company,  I did get very lucky with my targets for the year and it came as a complete surprise when I managed to go beyond those expected targets especially when it came to Candi Biscuits. You know how you plan something but then realize that the sky is the limit? That is what East River has enabled me to envision and strive to accomplish. It started with bringing on board UniFoods (Good Goodies) and Sugarie, to L’Oreal and most recently Engro Foundation.

Other than the accounts, my other achievement to date is my team. How I managed to find the right people for the right job; like the right fit to my account team puzzle. These people help me achieve great things every day.

Where they any gender stereotypes you faced in your career? If yes, how did you overcome them?

Mariyem: In this industry, I’ve somehow been very blessed to not come across such inconveniences.

How has East River helped you evolve as a professional?

Mariyem: Seeing how the position I manage is the very basis of managerial work, the role of a leader has been prominent throughout. I’ve developed various attitudes with time and been able to curate the right type with the particular group. Leading has been my strong point, for I now know what it means to lead successfully.

Meet the Content Queen- Amina Baig

Amina is a fine art major who has spent six years in the print industry and fell into digital advertising completely by chance, where she has been happily working and learning for the last 6 years.

How has the progress of digital marketing in Pakistan helped you evolve in this industry?

Amina: The beauty and complication of digital is that it is always evolving, and therefore everyone in the industry has to constantly be on their toes. You have to keep up with the trends, keep learning, and keep a supremely open mind; a good example of this is how we execute Butterfly Breathable’s objective of educating young women on menstrual hygiene management. The idea is to keep it short and fun for the target audience: so we run a monthly comic titled ‘The Adventures Of Uterus And Butterfly’, which conveys the message but is engaging and relatable. It’s really easy to evolve when these are the hazards of your chosen occupation.

Share with us one achievement that you think is the highlight of your digital career.

Amina: My greatest achievement has to be adapting to the quick, seemingly breezy tone of digital content. Coming from the copy-heavy world of journalism, condensing information, sentiment and wit into a five-word line has been a challenge and a half.

Were there any gender stereotypes you faced in your career? If yes, how did you overcome them?

Amina: I have been fortunate in always having worked for organisations that are respectful and non-discriminating towards all their employees. That said, there will always be that one person who thinks that you aren’t serious about your career because you are a woman. How do you deal with people like that? You don’t pay attention to them or let them take away from your efforts and contributions at work.

How has East River helped you evolve as a professional?

Amina: East River is a very energetic agency. We work hard, we work fast, and there is a very tangible push toward constant learning. I’ve learned how to think fast and be ready for anything.

A tete a tete with the Creative Mastermind- Anosha Aslam

Currently working as a Creative Director, Anosha is trying her tryst for the first time in the digital advertising industry. However, she has been in the advertising business for around 8 years.

How has the progress of digital marketing in Pakistan helped you evolve in this industry?

Anosha: Digital is the future, it is the tomorrow of everything. It’s growing rapidly even in Pakistan, so after working a little on traditional I wanted to evolve my experience into digital marketing and know more about it. It has been a good learning experience.

Share with us one achievement that you think is the highlight of your digital career

Anosha: That would be winning the pitch for Loreal, the brief was extensive and detailed and I think we all worked really well together and we pitched some unconventional ideas which was the best part about it!

Where they any gender stereotypes you faced in your career? If yes, how did you overcome them?

Anosha: Actually no! Never. In fact, wherever I have worked I have seen more women at the workplace than men and that too in Pakistan! So, fortunately, I have never experienced that.

How has East River helped you evolve as a professional?

Anosha: As I mentioned before this is my first time at digital and it’s all so new and exciting. I think this journey has taught me a lot about the other side of advertising which I didn’t know about. So yeah now I can safely say that I know another medium of advertising.

Media Maestro-Quratulain Rashid

A former creative manager, at a well-known rigorous event & PR agency, Quratulain stepped into East River after realizing her love for Digital Marketing.

As a Communication Strategist, she leads the Digital PR department. With a background in creative strategy and a slight fetish for numbers, she encouraged her team to focus on a more analysis & insight-driven approach when creating digital PR plans.

How has the progress of digital marketing in Pakistan helped you evolve in this industry?

Quratulain: It’s intense being a part of the progress because quite honestly most of us cannot even fathom how much further it’s going to go. I was fortunate enough to enter the digital marketing field at exactly the right time, I have seen the constant evolution and chosen to keep evolving with it by consuming information faster, and by creating, if not discovering, new avenues of partnership.

Share with us one achievement that you think is the highlight of your digital career.

Quratulain: Honestly, there are too many to list down. I’d definitely like to share two of them if I can’t share all. The first one, a campaign very close to my heart, is the re-launch of MilcoLu, the biscuit brand.

It was one of the first bigger campaigns we did; with months of planning, a limited budget in hand, and a team that would just not quit, we were able to amplify it on a scale which we were definitely not anticipating.

The second one, I understand is quite possibly a little vain, but it would have to be my position in the organization: at 26, I am the youngest Head of Department at East River.

Were there any gender stereotypes you faced in your career? If yes, how did you overcome them?

Quratulain: Have you heard the saying, “a woman is a woman’s worst enemy”?

Our society is such that, as women, we have ingrained in ourselves the inability to accept another woman’s accomplishments more often than naught. Just out of university, I faced this at the start of my career, it was disheartening, but I chose not to give the situation the attention it was begging for.

How has East River helped you evolve as a professional?

Quratulain: My professional strengths have evolved exponentially in the time I have been at East River. I started out as a Community Manager, went on to Sr. Community Manager, and from there, with the support of my organisation, have set up and lead the Digital PR department.

This has followed through with expanding my skill-set of Digital Media as well as Strategy. Apart from this, East River has shown me an ideal setting of what the future of most organisations will be, almost 50% of our workforce is female with five out of seven female department heads. It gives me hope as a woman, and as a professional who believes in an inclusive workforce.

These women have truly left us inspired by their stories of hard work, determination, and passion.
