Pakistan Ranked 48th Out of 72 Nations for English Skills

According to Education First’s (EF) English Proficiency Index (EPI), out of 72 nations, Pakistan ranks at #48 for English skills. Despite being the first language in many nations, there are several countries which have improved their focus on the language, despite it not being the mother tongue.

Unlike other languages, English is recognized as the go-to language for foreigners visiting a different country due to its global reach. It is also one of the most spoken and popular language around the world, a must-know in the eyes of many to go far. Unfortunately for Pakistan, where English is taught from a very early age, it has not managed to get itself into a stable position the average EF EPI score for Pakistan was 48.78. The average score places Pakistan 13th out of 19 countries in Asia, which were included in the study.

One of the main reasons for the lack of skills is being claimed to be the lack of governance and neglect the cause of education. Some time back, State Bank of Pakistan issued a staff note for quality and effectiveness of public spending on education in Pakistan. It highlighted that most governments in the recent past have failed to invest and bring about an improvement in the educational sector, according to Pro Pakistani.

In the previous survey conducted by EPI, Pakistan was found to be one of the worst countries for internet freedom in the past couple of days.

English Proficiency Index

The EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) is a report which attempts to rank countries by the average level of English language skills among adults. It is the product of EF Education First, a global language training company, and draws its conclusions from data collected via English tests available for free over the internet. The report was published for the first time in March 2011 based on the results of over 2 million test takers. A total of 950,000 people took the EF Standard English Test (EFSET), during the year 2015, belonging to the 72 countries. The most recent, sixth edition was released in November 2016 in which Pakistan ranked 48 out of 72.

The study conducted comprised of two parts.

Evaluation of relation between English and its relationship to various socio-economic factors.
Proficiency across four continents: Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

PEMRA Lifts Ban From TikTok After 4 Months

Pakistan’s telecom regulator has lifted a ban on TikTok. The decision is taken following assurances by the famous Chinese video-sharing platform that it would control “immoral and indecent” content.

PTA Notification

“Subsequent to imposition of ban on 20 July 2021, PTA remained in communications with the TikTok management. As a result of continuous engagement, senior management of the platform assured PTA. The application assured of its commitment to take necessary measures to control unlawful content in accordance with local laws and societal norms,” read a statement issued by the PTA on Friday.

The Chinese video-sharing platform also assured that the users who are continuously involved in uploading unlawful content would be blocked from using the platform.

TikTok Ban In Pakistan

Earlier, on November 3, TikTok Head of Public Policy-Emerging Markets and Head of Global CSR, Helena Lersch, and her team visited the (PTA) headquarters. During the meeting, PTA agreed to work with TikTok. The necessary steps will be taken to build a framework to guarantee that all content shared on the site is legal and safe for society.

During the meeting, the TikTok representative, Head of Public Policy-Emerging Markets, and Head of Global CSR Helena Lersch highlighted various initiatives being taken. They also mentioned a future strategy and investment in the local market. The step will ensure safe, productive, informative, and legitimate content to Pakistani users.

TikTok was banned for the fourth time in Pakistan on July 21, 2021. As the application failed to take down “inappropriate content.”

PTA will continue to monitor the platform in order to ensure that unlawful content contrary to Pakistan’s law and societal values is not disseminated.

TikTok was banned in Pakistan for the first time in October 2020. However, it was lifted after just ten days following an assurance by the company to block accounts “spreading obscenity.”

The app said it removed more than six million videos in Pakistan from January to March. This makes it the second market to get the most videos removed after the US.
The Chinese social media application has more than 39 million users in Pakistan. The brands are making good use of the digital platform. It is only arbitrary that the number will increase.

Price

Suzuki Vitara will be up for sale in the coming weeks most probably in the next year. However, it is not sure whether a 2WD customized Suzuki Vitara having will come to Pakistan or a 4WD All Grip one. The estimated prices for 2WD for both manual and automatic are tipped to be PKR 28,79,000 while for the 4WD version it would be 33,79,000.

2017 Honda Vezel

2017 will most likely see a new design and model coming from Honda in the form of Vezel. Honda has decided to make a few amendments in the design for the 2017 model. It does a fair impression of being something unique and something new to the market while sporting a more expressive stylish look, fresh taillight, a reshaped rear bumper and number of interior upgrades. It would come with 1.5L direct-injected four or Fiesta’s 123-hp direct injected three-cylinder turbo.

“I have managed many female members of staff over the years and I have seen women at work who are bent over double because of the pain caused by their periods. If someone is in pain – no matter what kind – they are encouraged to go home. But, for us, we wanted a policy in place which recognises and allows women to take time for their body’s natural cycle without putting this under the label of illness.”

More than just another leave policy, Swyft’s period policy encourages women to take time off as needed and discourages reluctance to speak openly about their bodies. It’s specifically designed to reshape the workplace conversation about bodies; to force us to acknowledge that we aren’t just thinking machines, we’re biological machines with complex processes and cycles. Nestlé Pakistan Installs Benches, Waste Bins Made From 100% Recycled Plastic Waste In Hunza

In line with the global vision for a waste-free future, Nestlé Pakistan recently stepped-up efforts under the Clean Gilgit and Hunza Project by installing benches and waste bins made from 100% recycled plastic waste, in Hunza.

Clean Gilgit & Hunza Project is an initiative on waste management, in partnership with Nestlé Pakistan, Gilgit Baltistan Waste Management Company (GBWMC) and KADO. It focuses on the waste management and recycling system for Gilgit and Hunza by encouraging waste management of 200,000 kgs of plastics in 2021, eventually leading up to 1000 tons by 2025 to make the area waste-free and promote sustainable tourism in the region.

They are accelerating their actions to reduce the environmental impact of various kinds of packaging waste. Their vision is that none of their packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfills or in oceans, lakes and rivers. They are delighted that these benches and waste bins, made from 100% recycled plastic waste, complete the cycle of waste minimization and are a step towards the promotion of a circular economy.

The waste bins and benches have been placed at popular tourist locations in Hunza, to encourage waste management.

To raise awareness, billboards were also placed; emphasizing the importance of Clean Hunza.

Earlier this year, Nestlé Pakistan also installed two machines for compressing and bailing plastic and packaging waste in Hunza and Gilgit respectively, these compressed bails are then transported downstream for recycling. In addition, Nestlé Pakistan also donated reusable bags to District Councils in Gilgit and Hunza for distribution among communities.

Tackling packaging waste requires a collective approach and we are committed to finding improved solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle. 1. Keep Location Off When Not in Use

2. Turn Off Extra Push Notifications

All of us want to be notified about the latest activities that occur on our social media. Push notifications were made for the same reason, to keep you updated about every activity that occurs. This is mainly because the notifications light up the display screen, use vibration or sounds, and depending on the settings you have selected, they can be extended and can repeat. In order to save battery and improve battery life, you need to turn off the notifications for the extra applications.

3. Avoid Using a Live or White Wallpaper

Nowadays, Android Smartphones use AMOLED screens, iPhone users do not have to worry about this one as the iPhone display does not. For those whose phones have AMOLED screens, when you use a white or light colored wallpaper, each pixel in the screen takes up battery life in order to power up. Using a black or dark wallpaper prevents the pixels to use battery power.

If you are traveling and your phone is of no use, or if the phone is lying around, or charging, place it on Airplane Mode whenever possible. The phone will always be connected to a cellular tower, causing strain on the body. By switching to Airplane Mode, you save your battery by avoiding notifications, messages, calls, Wi-Fi alerts, etc.

Keep in mind that you will not be able to make any calls or messages while Airplane Mode is activated unless over Wi-Fi connectivity.

5. Download Applications to Help

Android users can download the Snapdragon BatteryGuru application by Qualcomm, the same company that processes and manufactures the processors used in the phones.

The application learns the habits of the individual who own the phone so that it can find solutions to how to save power. This application is not for iPhones, however, there are many other applications on the iOS platform built for the same purpose.

6. Delete Un-Used Applications and Clear Out

Many applications are running in the background and the user is unaware.

The applications then aggressively consume the battery, impacting the lifespan of the phone. In order to stop these applications from eating-power, you can go to ‘Manage Applications’ and ‘Stop’ or ‘Force Stop’ them.

7. Brightness to Minimum

Brightness consumes your battery life too- in order to make your phone battery last even longer, keep it to as minimum as possible. Make sure that there is no strain on your eyes, using your phone with squinted eyes will damage them very badly.

8. Keep Wi-Fi Off

Whenever you put your cell aside, make sure your Wi-Fi connectivity is off in order to avoid the usage of extra battery power. Wi-Fi connection means being connected to all applications that run on it, like Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.

All applications are always on standby, and once connected, they will run in the background, sending notification after notification, wasting crucial battery juice.

9. Keep your Phone Cool

A hot phone means a hot battery, and a hot battery means that your phone will consume even more power. In order to make your phone last long, make sure it keeps cool. A single glance at their food items will show you a number of new names and kinds of food; a very risky but successful endeavor.

Their thin, crispy crust pizzas and the out-of-the-world pastas are absolutely scrumptious. The chicken that they serve with their pasta is smoked to perfection.

I celebrated my last birthday there and they even played the birthday song for me.

I tried their chicken, which was juicy and heavenly, and then also bit into some pesto pasta, which I have to admit was just as delicious as their chicken. They also offer appetizers, burgers and panini.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S Café

If you are a fan of the TV Show F.R.I.E.N.D.S, it would be shame if you don’t visit this café at least once. They have divided the entire building into two sections. The lower section is for people who want to fine dine, the upper section though is an entirely different story.

The upper section is set entirely in the image of the Central Perk featured on the series. The wall against the stair case features the characters and some of their most memorable lines, they have set up sofas just as those in Central Perk and to make things interesting, they also have a fooseball table like the one Chandler and Joey had in their apartment.

They offer burgers, paninis, chicken of different kinds and pastas along with deserts, coffee and other drinks. Their food is admirable too, it tastes perfect, their helping is of a gracious size and they present it well also.

This is the perfect place for a friends hang out, besides it’s not that formal and you have sofas to sit on as opposed to chairs.

The reason is simple, the place is neat, the food is good, the variety is extensive and all of this comes at a very reasonable price. In Lahore they have two branches that I know of and both of these branches are always full of customers.

For families and gatherings that like to taste a variety of foods they also have different food platters.

According to a statement released by Tattiana Spottiswoode, there have been allegations made against Zia Chishti, a 50-year-old Pakistani-American, founder of Afiniti. Since Tattiana’s testimony has surfaced, Zia has been viewed in a different light, as he should be. The news also affected the Pakistan Stock Market on Thursday as Chishti is also the CEO of TRG Pakistan Limited.

There is no excuse nor justification that settles the case of assault and harassment. People keep talking about evidence and proof and they never think about the victim. Instead, we have this victim-blaming mentality among people here.

Zia Chishti is a Pakistani–American sexual harasser and predator.

Zia Chishti And Harassment

This could definitely be one of the first good steps that can be taken against such a personality. We don’t believe that he is innocent and he should stand justice for what he has done. Being a personality of a high stature does not grant him the ability to walk free of any crime. Every person is the same in the eyes of the law and we want to see him brought to justice. If you would actually listen to the testimony or read the verbatim, you would understand what we are talking about. To think that people still want to defend him after listening to the testimony is saddening and shocking both! Can they not understand the depth of the crime, the intensity of it?

This is a person who has shown no mercy or remorse in doing what they did. In fact, they seemed to be enjoying themselves at the expense of the other’s person’s pain, misery, and suffering. How long can we allow people with entitlement and power to keep moving in such a way? Zia Chishti has stepped down as the CEO of the company but it should not stop here. More steps have to be taken. He has done something for which there is no excuse nor forgiveness. Anyone who sympathizes with his situation clearly does not have the brainpower to comprehend what exactly has happened.

At times, we wonder what it takes for a person to commit a crime. We think about what must go through the mind of a criminal before they are to commit something. We cannot even imagine how the victim feels after they have been the subject of a crime. All crimes are horrendous in nature, with some more than the rest. Being sexually assaulted or harassed is not something that should ever be taken lightly. It is something that can mentally destroy a person and leave them feeling quite vulnerable.

Justice Is Needed

We hope to see the victim get the justice she rightly deserves. Why did she have to suffer at the hands of a brute just because he felt so? Reading the testimony might just make your blood run cold. Anyone who defends a harasser is not up to any good on their own because they don’t seem to know the difference between right and wrong. Yet, you’d find many of them being hypocritical when something like this doesn’t happen. There has to be accountability for actions so they have a fear in them and think twice before committing heinous and grotesque acts.

We have to be patient and see how the events unfold and stay in full support of Ms. Tattiana. She deserves our support in this difficult time and we hope she finds a way to heal as time goes by. There are lines that can never be crossed, no matter how dire the situation, and a line has been crossed here. We need justice and we need it to be swift! Too long have criminals walked free under the banner of popularity and ‘Status’. It is time to make them realize that their actions have consequences!

Starbucks, on Thursday, opened a new store located between New York City’s Park and Lexington avenues, and it features Amazon Go’s Walk Out Shopping experience. This tech lets you pick up coffee, tea, and snacks and go on your way without having to stop at a cashier.

This concept store combines Amazon and Starbucks products. You can also stop for your Starbucks drink. At the same time, you turn to the Amazon Shopping App to use an “In-Store Code” or Amazon One. You use the palm of your hand as your identifier. Then you can enter the Amazon Go market and the store’s seating lounge. Joining the Amazon Go market will be like entering any other Amazon Go store. It will allow you to pick snacks off the shelf and automatically add them to your virtual carts.

The Collaboration

The two powerhouses are teaming up to create “a common vision to provide innovative in-store experiences that are centered on the customer.” Says Dilip Kumar, Amazon’s VP of physical retail and technology, in a statement.

Dubbed Starbucks Pickup with Amazon Go, the system gives customers the ability to choose their experience.

“Whether it is utilizing the Starbucks and Amazon apps to purchase food and beverages on the go, or deciding to stay in the lounge for the traditional third-place experience Starbucks is known for,” Starbucks executive Katie Young said.

When guests take any item off the shelf, it will immediately be added to their virtual cart. However, if customers put back an item, it will come out of the cart. Once the customer leaves the Amazon Go market portion of the store, their card will be charged. According to the release, the receipt is expected to follow within a few hours, if not faster.

Items that will be available for pickup include classic Starbucks fare. The menu consists of Sous Vide Egg Bites, breakfast sandwiches, and protein boxes. In addition to items found at other Amazon Go locations, including its Kitchen Turkey and Cheddar Sandwich and the Buffalo-Style Wrap.

The Manhattan location’s opening coincides with Starbucks’ Red Cup Day. Meanwhile, you can claim a free limited-edition reusable cup if you order a holiday or fall beverage at participating US stores.

Pakistani channels’ morning shows are infamous for tapping into or kickstarting controversies almost every other day. Well, the popular host, Nida Yasir has landed herself in yet another controversy for an episode themed around saas-bahu. This time she had invited pairs of mother and daughter-in-law to talk about the issues they were having that led to fights.

The idea behind the saas-bahu talk may just be nice. People should indeed talk their problems out. Not talking about what they are struggling with leads to the wound festering. And that becomes the basis of the saas-bahu fights most of our Pakistani dramas are based on.

Well, Nida Yasir invited the pairs and told them to give their point of view of what might be the struggle and how the other person is falling into the expectation arena. In the clip, you can see the mother-in-law saying that she is not happy with her bahu being a working woman. She says that she was indeed looking for an educated and beautiful woman for her son but one who chooses to stay home. This statement in itself is numerous levels of problematic but let’s focus on the fact that Nadia raised the matter on a public platform.

Morning show content

What is terrifying is that not only were Pakistani dramas overflowing with the saas-bahu masala, now the morning shows will be rampant with it too. Nida is usually the initiator, and other morning shows follow suit. She used to have celebrities have pretend-weddings/. And when it wasn’t celebrities, she would have underprivileged people marry on her show. This sparked a whole theme of weddings on morning shows. Soon, everyone was doing it.

There was another instance where morning shows began having makeup artists prepare brides, or Mehendi artists applying bridal Mehendi. All of this, just for ratings? And now, to maintain ratings, the host invited saas-bahu to have a fight on-air; how low can the shows get?

Netizens were not happy

The netizens on any platform the video was posted, were not happy. They expressed disgust at the idea behind these shows. But that also leads to one asking, if these many people are hateful of the content, why then are these shows getting TRPs; why do show creators get the opportunity to say, ‘But we get TRPs so, we’ll keep producing.’
