While we have not had many serial killers, Javed Iqbal was one of the most ruthless ones. He was filed for having murdered a hundred children. That too, after he surrendered to the police station.

Now, we all know that our dramas may be laced with saas-bahu problems but we are a sucker for dark mystery thrillers. The poster had already gotten us excited, and the trailer has us just out of our minds.

In the trailer, you can see quite a lot happening. You see numerous faces. Ayesha Omar is amongst the most iconic ones as she runs around the streets in the police uniform. But what leaves us with goosebumps is the stats-filled voiceover by Yasir Hussain. Giving voice to the character of Javed Iqbal, the creepy voice of Yasir Hussain states, in what obviously seems like a police interrogation, the population of the city. He said that according to the population and that rate of reproduction, no one would really notice if a ‘few’ kids went missing.

He went on to say that the police were asking him the wrong questions. He wanted them to ask the why. The trailer tells us that Javed Iqbal wanted to be heard.

With Javed Iqbal, we are giving potential criminals the idea that through their crimes they will be eternalized. Because of this, crimes as horrendous as the murder of innocent children may just increase by a landslide.

To many, smoking is considered a fashion, especially for the young. But the dangers smokers face, whether a young or an adult, cannot be denied. A habit started as a way to look cool can soon turn into a permanent addiction. Much effort is being carried out to keep smokers away, but some of the measures might not be the right solution for the existing smokers to quit smoking.

It’s well-known that any form of smoking like cigars, cigarettes, pipes is highly injurious to health. It causes around 480,000 deaths per year in the USA, whereas, in Pakistan, nearly 108,800 people lose their lives due to smoking. The big question is whether there are any alternatives to reduce the harms caused by conventional smoking short of advocating a cold turkey approach, especially for people who are unable to or unwilling to quit.

For existing smokers who wish to quit or reduce the harm caused by smoking, vaping can be a healthier alternative. In fact, many people are now switching from conventional smoking to vaping, and according to numbers of the global market, vaping was estimated to be worth $19.3 billion in 2019.

The first vape came into the market in 2003 in China as a disposable that mimicked a cigarette, but then Hon Lik’s Ruyan introduced the modern face of vape. The three-piece setup had a flavour cartridge with a battery and atomizer. These “cigalikes” evolved into vape-pens, which were rechargeable, gaining them instant popularity. They also equipped clear e-liquid tanks known as clearomizers in which liquid levels could be monitored manually, letting users know when they had to replace their cartridges. Vapes now hold more liquid and have better coils that offer users a better experience.

Is Vaping the Best Alternative?

The aim of the e-cigarette was never to give smokers a new form of cigarette, cigar or a pipe. Its goal was rather to substitute smoking with a similar experience that meshed perfectly into their routines. For some people, smoking is not just a source of nicotine but is a part of their lifestyle.

Many people who want to quit smoking turn to nicotine in different forms known as nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs), however they lack the experience smokers are used to. This is where vaping plays its role as it provides a comparable experience to smoking conventional tobacco. Prof Caitlin Notley, an Associate Editor for the journals Addiction and Nicotine and Tobacco Research, says, “Modern electronic cigarette products have better nicotine delivery than the early devices.” Therefore, they are better able to substitute the experience of smoking combustible cigarettes.

Research conducted by the University of East Anglia (UEA) states, “If six people in 100 quit by using nicotine replacement therapy, 10-people in 100 would quit by using electronic cigarettes containing nicotine. This means an additional four people in 100 could potentially quit smoking with nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes.” Given that Public Health England states vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking cigarettes, this means that 4 more people in 100 would be making a life-changing decision in choosing e-cigarettes.

The World Without Cigarette, Why Not Do it The E-Way

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills over 8 million people a year globally and affects around 1.2 million indirectly through second-hand smoke. Smoking remains a significant global health threat, and it remains difficult to quit the habit permanently.

E-cigarettes are now positively impacting the lives of smokers in countries like the United Kingdom, where e-cigarettes have been acclaimed as a robust tool for smokers to get rid of the habit.

Looking forward, more countries going the way of the United Kingdom may in fact help more adult smokers change their lives.

[Update: December 10, 2021]: iOS 15 software launched earlier this year. Since then, it got much hype. Now that 15.2 is about to release, people are bound to explore what it offers and behold because you won’t be disappointed. It seems that a leak has occurred. The leak is regarding the release of the Google Pixel watch and some of the specifications that surround the watch itself. As far as the design is concerned, the device is going to have a bezel-less display, alongside being all circular. This is set apart from the rectangular design of the Apple Watch. Of course, there is nothing entirely wrong with that design but each one has its own perks.

One of the outstanding features of the Google Pixel watch design is that it sits well in all sizes of hands. You don’t have to worry about the watch feeling too small or too big on the wrist because it seems to fit all sizes. The Apple watch does give off a retro feel to some people, reminding them of the rectangular G-shock models from the 80s. Of course, that does not mean that the watch is any less in specifications.

Smartphone production has increased in Pakistan by quite a margin. Just a handful of years ago, a majority of our buying was based on CBU imports. However, this year has been different. Pakistan has managed to save quite a substantial amount in import costs because of the local production of phones. Partially built units have also been entering the country and they have been present in a major quantity. No matter how much we calculate, the numbers just don’t lie.

According to sources, Pakistan has saved about Rs.410 Million in import costs because of local buying. More than 70% of the sales of smartphones have been from within Pakistan. Not just this, but the majority of the phones sold cost under $200. That shows that more than one brand is flourishing in Pakistan, especially the mid-range and budget ones.

Last night, after 10 pm, almost the whole of Karachi was jerked awake as the citizens felt tremors. Some mistook it for being nothing but it lasted for quite a few seconds and the suspicions were confirmed as the hashtag began trending on Twitter almost immediately.

Details on earthquake

As the news trended, more details began emerging. Turns out that the earthquake was felt in various areas of Karachi. The tremors could be felt in Gulshan, Scheme 33, and Malir Cantt as well. Safe to say, the way it was spread out, it covered the entire Karachi.

The earthquake is being reported to be at a 4.1 Richter scale. It went 15 km in depth and 15 km North. Given the stats of how many earthquakes, Pakistan has been subjected to in the past 7 days, people were bound to be scared. As a result, the platform overflowed with prayers of protection.

Pfizer Found To Be Effective Against COVID-19 Variant Omicron

[Update: December 9th, 2021]: The moment the Omicron variant of COVID-19 emerged, it rendered us afraid because everything became uncertain all over again. Researchers were not sure of the severity and whether vaccines would be effective against it or not. However, now that some time has passed with researchers doing the work, it turns out that Pfizer may just be effective although that would be after one is administered three doses of it.

Because of this, Omicron stands a bit more different than the other strands/variants because up until then, only two doses of vaccine would be enough to lessen the severity of the virus should a person contract it.

Of course, if you are already vaccinated with your standard two doses, one booster shot of Pfizer should do the trick. Since the first signs of Omicron have already appeared in Pakistan, it is imperative that we all get the shot once again.

[November 29th, 2021]: When an illness first infects an individual and is not contained, it is like opening Pandora’s box. The situation with COVID-19 is more or less the same. Since it got unleashed in 2019, there have been numerous variants of it including the scary South African and Delta variants. However, soon people got used to it in hopes that the vaccine will rid them of the pandemic. Unfortunate for their wishful thinking, the world now faces Omicron.

Transmissibility

The variant is different from the usual COVID pandemic. Hence, studies are still underway to understand the extent of the transmissibility of the disease. Considering the positivity rate in South Africa is increasing, the researchers are trying to see whether it’s due to Omicron or some other factor.

Severity

WHO doesn’t know much about Omicron at this stage either. They are grappling with understanding the virus amid already high cases in South Africa. The influx of cases is making it difficult to figure out whether the data obtained is due to the Omicron variant or an already high positivity rate.

What we know is that the initial reports came from university students. Young adults already have a stronger immune system hence, it will be some time to fully grasp the severity of the variant.

Increased risk of re-infection

According to the preliminary studies, the ones who have had covid 19 in the past (no matter what variant), have a higher probability of being re-infected with Omicron. That said, those who have not been infected yet, shouldn’t roam around free either because the data is limited on the variant.

Vaccines on Omicron

The Delta variant was until now the most severe variant and vaccines were effective in reducing the extent of symptoms and the probability of death. Researchers, however, are still not sure how effective the vaccine is on Omicron. This is why WHO is in talks with its technical partners for that very purpose.

Testing COVID-19

The current PCR tests to detect COVID 19 are effective for Omicron as well. The verdict is still out for the rapid antigen detection test.

Current treatments

For severe COVID-19 patients, the treatment plan still includes Corticosteroids and IL6 Receptor Blockers. Treatment plans used for other COVID-19 variants are still being researched upon.

Seeing as WHO is still more or less blind with regard to the variant, countries have begun issuing travel bans all over again to restrict the spread. Should you be worried then? Yes, most definitely. And using that worry, we should ensure that we and our loved ones take all the precautionary measures against COVID-19.

Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay – A Disappointment To Umera Ahmed’s Original

As someone who has been a fan of Umera Ahmed for a long while and had read most of her novels, I was already familiar with the story of Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay. The novel was a masterpiece if we chose to look past the emotional abuse. But the abuse was weaved into the story so letting go of it would have destroyed the essence. Hence, I was looking forward to the televising of the story.

Why was I waiting for the serial?

While the novel had no loopholes, the moment Aswad finds out the reality of what had transpired and his world comes crashing down thinking how he oppressed Mehreen, the novel ends.

Mehreen’s character was a beautifully crafted one in the novel and I can never go past the development of it. Of course, the credit goes to Umera Ahmed who expertly made Mehreen endure all the roubles and how she lost everything one by one. Had the drama shown even an ounce of that gradual development, it would have been a great serial.

I do not support emotional abuse but I had shipped Mehreen and Aswad even while reading the novel and had waited for the serial to see how Aswad brings Mehreen back to her conscious self and tells her to make the decision herself of what she wants to do with her life.

Why is Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay disappointing?

I can go on and on about why this is disappointing. But Mehreen’s character gets the prize for this one. There is no development to her character; no consistency. Sometimes, she is brave and outspoken and at other times, she cowers away in corners.

She is not at all linked to Mehreen in the novel. The novel-Mehreen was headstrong and made practical decisions no matter how much in love she was with anyone. She was also outspoken at one instance and kept shut in others but that made sense too. She would be confident in her own world but when left with family, she would stay quiet.

Even when she got married to Aswad, it was because she had gotten three major blows to her, so she was already mild. She had seen Mashal’s suicide. Safwan had chosen to believe Mashal and left her. And, her friends abandoned her as well assuming her to be selfish when she rejected their brothers.

Then she got married and chose to not fight Aswad anymore taking his punishments that would physically exhaust her. After that, she lost her mother and couldn’t go to her funeral. Then, she lost her mother-in-law, her last support. Left alone with no house help, husband, or human, that’s when she began having her hallucinations.

Haphazard loopholes

The serial just skipped all of that destroying the storyline. What we have now is an embarrassment to the novel by Umera Ahmed.

In fact, after getting tons of backlash, it seems that the creators are haphazardly trying to finish off the series; they are not even bothering with tying the loopholes. In fact, by being pressured by the audience’s narrative they are even hinting at Mashal accidentally dying.

Let’s list these untidy knots, shall we?

  1. Mehreen has a hallucinatory episode to get to the hospital.
  2. The addition of the psychiatrist suddenly gives Aswad the talk on emotional abuse. And he is immediately affected.
  3. Shabbo suddenly came clean about what Mashal did to Mehreen.
  4. Mehreen used to write a diary, that was the most impactful part they could have used (Mehreen’s narration of her own life). That would have shown a systematic decline of her consciousness.

Instead, I am forced to watch the show that is going to leave me unsatiated once again.

Are Scientists Developing Chewing Gum That Could Cure COVID-19?

Scientists are developing a chewing gum laced with a plant-grown protein. The protein will serves as a “trap” for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. Further reducing viral load in saliva and potentially lowering transmission.

The researchers noted that people who are fully vaccinated can still become infected with SARS-CoV-2. Such patients can carry a viral load similar to those who are unvaccinated.

“SARS-CoV-2 replicates in the salivary glands, and we know that when someone who is infected sneezes, coughs, or speaks some of that virus can be expelled and reach others,” said Henry Daniell at the University of Pennsylvania in the US.

“This gum offers an opportunity to neutralize the virus in the saliva. It will give us a simple way to possibly cut down on a source of disease transmission.”

“Vaccination efforts have greatly helped in the fight against COVID-19, but even fully vaccinated individuals can still become infected. Moreover, recent research even suggests viral loads found in the saliva of vaccinated people are quite similar to the unvaccinated.”

Research By Henry Daniell  

To test the chewing gum, the team grew ACE2 in plants, paired with another compound that enables the protein to cross mucosal barriers and facilitates binding. The researchers incorporated the resulting plant material into cinnamon-flavoured gum tablets.

Incubating samples obtained from nasopharyngeal swabs from COVID-positive patients with the gum. The samples showed that the ACE2 present could neutralise SARS-CoV-2 viruses. They then modified viruses, less-pathogenic than SARS-CoV-2, to express the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

The scientists observed that the gum largely prevented the viruses or viral particles from entering cells, either by blocking the ACE2 receptor on the cells or by binding directly to the spike protein.

Finally, the team exposed saliva samples from COVID-19 patients to the ACE2 gum and found that levels of viral RNA fell so dramatically to be almost undetectable.

The research team is currently working towards obtaining permission to conduct a clinical trial to evaluate whether the approach is safe and effective when tested in people infected with SARS-CoV-2.

If the clinical trials prove the gum is safe and effective, it could be given to patients whose infection status is unknown, to reduce the likelihood of passing the virus to caregivers, the researchers added.

Zameen Developments And Bodla Builders Sign Agreement With DHA Multan To Develop Golf Views Rumanza

MULTAN: Zameen Developments (ZD) — the development arm of Zameen.com — and Bodla Builders recently signed an agreement with DHA Multan to develop a project overlooking the incredible DHA Rumanza Golf Course, called the ‘Golf Views Rumanza’. Zameen.com — Pakistan’s largest property enterprise — has come on board as the sales and marketing partner for the venture.

Zameen.com Senior Director Sales (Central) Sheikh Shuja-Ullah Khan and Bodla Builders CEO Pir Sohaib Tariq Bodla signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies. Also present on the occasion were Zameen Country Head Ahmed Bhatti, Director Affiliates and Acquisition Adil Kamal, Bodla Builders Managing Director Pir Junaid Bodla and DHA Multan’s Project Director.

On the occasion, Zameen Country Head Ahmed Bhatti stated that the development of high-rise projects was the need of the hour for South Punjab, particularly Multan. He added that the upcoming project that Zameen was developing with the Bodla Builders at an ideal location in DHA Multan Rumanza would go on to become an architectural symbol for the entire South Punjab region.

Zameen Senior Director Sales (Central) Sheikh Shuja-Ullah Khan said that that the Golf View Rumanza project would make an incredible addition to the city for the residents of Multan. He further said that it was the first project to be developed by Zameen Developments in South Punjab and that not only would they ensure that it was delivered and constructed within the predetermined timelines, but that many more such projects would be developed in the region by Zameen Developments in the future.

Bodla Builders CEO Pir Sohaib Tariq Bodla said that the partnership with Zameen Developments was their attempt to provide the residents of the ‘city of saints’ with affordable luxury apartments in a prime location in the city. He added that the project’s most prominent feature was that it was being developed in DHA Multan Rumanza, which would not only provide the people of South Punjab with avenues of investment but also provide opportunities for investment for people across the country.
