Cricket Gateway’s Youtube Channel was recognized as the Best Digital Channel 2019 at the Pakistan Digi Awards 2019. With almost 900,000 subscribers in less than 40 days, this channel brought the PSL season 4 live to over 9 million viewers in 1080p nationwide.

The Award was received by Bilal Chughtai, Head of Media and Mehvish Mumtaz, Group Account Manager – Blitz Advertising Private Limited, in a ceremony recently held in Karachi.

Ecstatic at the win, members of team Blitz exclaimed:

During this year’s PSL Season 4, Cricket Gateway garnered an overwhelming response from the audience with over 72.4 million views and a combined unique reach of over 9 million users, making it an ideal platform for brands to advertise.

It has officially been made compulsory to wear a helmet for anyone riding a motorcycle in Karachi, thanks to Karachi Additional IG Ameer Sheikh who has directed the police to commence a helmet awareness campaign in Karachi from July 1st, 2019.

The campaign is called Helmet Nahi To Kuch Nahi.

Federal Budget 2019-20- Karachi Traders Threaten Government with Shutter Down Strike

The IG in charge of the campaign has instructed people to purchase helmets if they don’t own any, saying that special camps will be arranged for such people so that they can buy helmets at a cheaper rate.

“It will be prohibited to ride a motorcycle on Sharae Faisal without a helmet,”

The traffic police have impounded a total of 16,014 motorcycles, and fined 25,531 people a collective Rs3.8 million in just the past two days.

Mayor Wasim Akhtar and Commissioner Iftikhar Shalwani also made an appeal to motorbike riders and warned them to comply, as they will also be a part of the campaign.

On Monday, July 1st, Karachi Traders Action Committee held a meeting to start protesting against the fiscal budget for 2019-20 presented by the federal government.

Rejecting the budget, Small traders in Karachi began their protest yesterday (Tuesday), claiming that the government’s economic policies and decisions are adversely affecting their businesses.

Their protest march was from Regal Chowk in Saddar to the Karachi Press Club, consisting of traders belonging to Jodia Bazaar, Saddar electronics market, Tariq Road markets, main Kapra Market at Tower and Sher Shah scrape market.

The participants chanted slogans like “IMF’s budget unacceptable”, “anti-business budget unacceptable”, and “go Shabbar go”.

Today the small businessmen and traders have given a 72-hour ultimatum to the federal government to withdraw their “International Monetary Fund (IMF) dictated anti-business federal budget.”

Here’s what the All Karachi Tajir Ittehad Chairman Atiq Mir said during his address to participants of the protest march in Karachi yesterday:

“We will observe a shutters-down strike if the government does not withdraw the budget by July 5,”

All Karachi Tajir Ittehad is a grand alliance of some 600 small and big markets in the city.

The traders are demanding the following 3 basic demands from the government which, if left unfulfilled in the next 72 hours, will cause the traders to start a shutter down strike in the city:

that the government withdraw 17% sales tax imposed on traders
stop sending the FBR’s ‘corrupt’ officials to harass traders at markets
withdraw condition of acquiring CNIC (Computerised National Identity Card) copy from buyers
withdrawal of increase in tariffs for power and gas utilities
revising down key interest rate to make banking credit affordable to traders
stop free-fall of rupee against the US dollars

Mir also said that he was hopeful that the FBR would address their budget related issues before the ultimatum is over to avoid closing down markets indefinitely.

In an unfortunate twist of events, a gunman had opened fire at Lahore‘s Allama Iqbal International Airport, killing at least 2.

The incident took place Wednesday morning, causing a wave of panic amongst passengers. A majority of individuals, to protect their lives, ran for the exits from the airport lounge after the gunshots were heard.

One of the 2 men involved was arrested by the Airport Security Force (ASF) whereas the second person reportedly managed to escape the scene. Reportedly, both the deceased had returned home from performing Umrah.

The gunman in captivity was identified as Zain. SP investigation Lahore has reasons to believe that the attack was because of personal enmity. Meanwhile, for tightened security, a large number of police and rangers have been deployed around the premises.

No Increase in Car Taxes, Token: FBR

Update [3rd July 2019]: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has clarified that there was a misconception created after the financial budget 2019 was announced in terms of token payment and registration of cars.

According to FBR, there was a typographical mistake which was rectified in the Finance Act, 2019. Furthermore, FBR confirmed that the rate of tax for the token payment and registration of cars remains the same as last year.

On the other hand, FBR also clarified that no tax has been levied on private cars on the base of seating capacity. However, those individuals have failed to file taxes will have to pay double in taxes than those who are on the Active Taxpayer List.

Individuals who are not eligible are advised to inform the FBR beforehand to be exempted.

The federal government of Pakistan has announced an increase in car taxes in the budget for the next fiscal year.

The taxes have increased the income and withholding tax by 600% on vehicle registration and vehicle ownership transfer levied on top of the token tax.

Earlier, a one-time tax that was imposed, has now also been changed by the government to annual taxes. As a result, car owners have to pay an additional Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 200,000 for filers and Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 400,000 for non-filers.

With this new announcement, the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department was left dumbfounded and has asked for written clarification from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as it suspects an unintentional error in the finance bill.

Karachi: 19 Danger Spots Identified in the City

Local manufacturers collected a one-time withholding tax from the customers and write the information on their sales invoices. However, under schedule 231 of the finance bill pages 154 and 155, it has been fixed annually on a per seat basis.

Pepsi Gives Mountain Dew Account to TBWA After 46 Years of Business with BBDO

Following a closed, Omnicom-only review, Pepsi has selected TBWA\Chiat\Day New York as lead creative agency for the Mountain Dew brand.

The switch was confirmed by Nicole Portwood, Mountain Dew vice president of marketing.

“We enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with BBDO New York and are grateful for the partnership,” he settled in a statement.

“We’re excited about our new chapter with TBWA\Chiat\Day New York and look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership with Omnicom,” Portwood added.

It has been reported that BBDO pitched for the business, as well as Goodby Silverstein & Partners. The Omnicom shops, however, purportedly displayed concepts for the brand to a PepsiCo team earlier this year. Spokespeople for TBWA, BBDO, GS&P, and Omnicom deferred to the client for comment.

PepsiCo has a unique six-decade relationship with Omnicom despite working with a range of agencies around the globe. The company acquired Mountain Dew in 1963 and then hired Ogilvy to work on the brand.

BBDO first won the business in 1973 and the true breakthrough came in 1992 with the debut of “Do Diet Dew” a campaign developed by junior copywriter Bill Bruce. That line developed into “Do the Dew” and Bruce eventually became BBDO New York’s chief creative officer.

The news regarding Mountain Dew follows another account transfer within the Omnicom network just last week without a formal review.

PepsiCo spent $119.5 million on paid media promoting the Mountain Dew family of brands in 2018, According to Kantar Media. That total marked a 34% increase over the previous year’s budget. Total spend for the first quarter of 2019 amounted to $34 million, up from just under $30 million during the same period in 2017.

Mango Production in Pakistan May Decline by 50%

It has been reported that farmers have feared a 45-50% decline in mango production in Pakistan this year due to global warming.

On the other hand, the officials of the Mango Research Institute have figured out 30% crop loss.

This is due to multiple factors including change in climate, prolonged winter, late flowering, winds, and hailstorms.

Moreover, a number of experts have also revealed that the significant decline in mango production in Sindh and Punjab was already expected this year.

While talking about the issue, the Mango Growers Cooperative Society president Syed Zahid Hussain Gardezi said:

The recent visit to orchards highlighted that mango crop production might drop to 45pc to 50pc due to increase in production cost in climatic conditions.

He further informed that mango trees hit by diseases after abnormal climatic conditions.

He added that the other countries have already started taking precautions to deal with the global warming issue but unfortunately, Pakistan is way behind in this area.

He also said that there is an urgent need for research and policy-making to deal with the issue of climate change.

A new loophole has been discovered in the popular Microsoft Excel application. It was found in the power query feature, and now poses a security threat to 120 million users.

Mimecast Services Ltd. researchers came across a method to abuse the feature to install malicious codes in a user’s device(s), by interacting with them infrequently, yet instantly.

For those who are unaware, the power query feature is a data connection technology Excel users have now been using for a good amount of 7 years.

The feature allows Excel files to be combined, discovered, connected and handles data before being imported from remote sources i.e external link app with its own cloud, another spreadsheet, a text document, or web page.

Court Rejects 3 Pending Harassment Cases, Explains Anti-Harassment Law Again

“Mere meanings in dictionaries cannot be used to explain sexual harassment”, said the Islamabad High Court (IHC) while explaining the anti-harassment law and rejecting 3 pending cases for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace.

The rejected cases had been filed against three individuals Ombudsperson under the Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2010: a grade 22 officer, Mohammad Younis Dagha, head of the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) schools, and an official of a private online cab hailing service.

The reason behind it is that, according to court, harassment is often generalised and confused with other behaviors that are not sexual in nature. The court says that mere administrative actions at the workplace cannot be treated as sexual harassment.

“The reasoning recorded by the learned Ombudsman regarding the scope of jurisdiction vested in the said statutory public office explicitly shows that the provisions of the Act of 2010 have been grossly misinterpreted and misconstrued,”

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah observed, offering a background of the three cases.

He further elaborated:

“in all the cases in hand, the acts, attitudes, conduct or gestures were not of a sexual nature and, therefore, did not fall within the jurisdiction of the learned Ombudsman.

The complaints in all these cases could not have been entertained by the learned Ombudsman because the alleged acts, conduct or attitudes were not sexual in nature.”

The court maintains that the public office of the Ombudsperson has been established with the specific purpose of protecting women against harassment.

However, it must be noted that the said act explicitly refers to various phrases such as “unwelcome sexual advice”, “request for sexual favours”, “physical conduct of a sexual nature”, “sexually demeaning attitudes”.

Therefore, the court has made it obvious that only words or gestures directed towards another person with the intention of gaining sexual gratification would fall within the definition of ‘harassment’ in the context of the Act of 2010.

The court has advised the Ombudsman to entertain the complaints strictly in accordance with the above mentioned section of the Act and clarified that the law will not be extended to complaints where alleged acts of harassment are understood in its ordinary sense as explained in the regular dictionaries.

Careem Might Let Users Book Rides on WhatsApp!

With an aim to make the ride hailing and tracking process easier for customers with slower internet connections and lesser understanding of how apps work, Careem (Iraq) is testing a new feature which lets users book rides through WhatsApp.

The messaging app, Whatsapp, has 80 per cent penetration in Iraq. Therefore, this will make the process easier for users in Iraq.

“The idea was born out of a Careem overnight-hackathon and is built by our engineers, product and growth managers,” said Emre Tok,

the vice president of customer growth and digital marketing at Careem. “It’s believed that this is the first time a chatbot has been used in this way to book rides and the potential addressable market is significant.”

The new service will be tested in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, 3G services only introduced as late as 2015.

The Careem application uses more mobile data as compared to Whatsapp, hence it is expected that users in Iraq will find it easier to hail rides on the messaging app.

In the initial stage the feature will only work for existing Careem customers with registered phone numbers, but it will open up to others later on.

The customer’s message will be sent to Careem bot, who will check if the phone number is in its database. If not, a WhatsApp message with a sign-up link to the Careem website will be returned.

The bot can identify and respond in two languages in the beginning stage, English and Arabic. More languages will be added in the future.

“We’ve always sought to apply specific solutions to specific local problems, whether that’s different modes of transport or ways of operating,” said Mohamed Al Hakim, the general manager of Careem Iraq.

“Careem is acutely aware that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach for the Middle East, so we’re always adapting to local needs.”

Quality Education For Orphans With Tecno Blue Chalk

Khubaib Foundation which is a social welfare organization that houses and educates orphans across Pakistan was recently honoured with a substantial donation by Tecno Mobile Pakistan.

The smartphone brand reached out to Khubaib Foundation because of the organization’s repute in providing a safe and nourishing environment to orphans. In addition to the donation already given the company has announced that a portion of profit from the sale of each of their mobile handset will also be given to the orphanage for the benefit of the children.

Tecno Mobile Pakistan launched in 2016 and is the manufacturer of a number of popular smartphones and tablets.

The Tecno Blue Chalk campaign aims to deliver quality education to orphans and was initiated under an MOU signed by Tecno Mobile and Khubaib Foundation. The campaign began in the hill city of Haripur late last month where hundreds of orphans gathered to celebrate the partnership.

Creek Ma, the CEO of Tecno Mobile Pakistan, arrived at the orphanage and was welcomed by the drum beats of the children’s marching band. He then went on a tour of the campus after which he and Nadeem Ahmad, the Chairman of Khubaib Foundation, carried out a tree plantation with the orphans.

Creek Ma was also shown the foundation’s impressive Tækwondo facility that is used by the students to learn and practice martial arts.

He was happily surprised to hear that the orphanage boosts more than a 100 black belts along with 60 gold medalists. In commending the efforts of the orphans, Creek Ma spoke about their talent and hard work and emphasised that education is the key to success.

He noted that the children should take advantage of this new partnership to excel in their academics and help their country prosper and progress. He later went on to present gifts to the top students from the different campuses.

The event marking the campaign was filled with many fun festivities. Children of all ages could be seen running around in their colourful traditional outfits. Following a feast for the thousand plus attendees, the children performed cultural dances, sang songs and showcased their martial arts skills.

Khubaib Foundation’s Chairman Nadeem Ahmad noted in his closing remarks that the support given by Tecno Mobile Pakistan will allow the foundation to restock new textbooks and purchase stationary materials for the children.

He also mentioned that the donation will help in solarising the orphanage so that the children’s daily schedule isn’t disturbed by issues of load shedding and the orphanage’s dependency on external electric supply is reduced.

Following the campaign the President of Pakistan hosted an iftar dinner for the orphans of Khubaib Foundation.

The dinner was attended by Nadeem Ahmad, Creek Ma and a number of other business leaders and educationists. President Arif Alvi welcomed the children and further emphasised the importance of supporting their education so that they aren’t disadvantaged because of their circumstances and can achieve all that they want.

In light of this message by the President, the efforts of Tecno Mobile are noteworthy.

The Tecno Blue Chalk campaign is expected to help hundreds of boys and girls under the care of Khubaib Foundation receive quality education in the cities of Haripur, Muzafarabad, Skardu, Sargodha, Gilgit and Rawalpindi.
