Dr. Zeelaf Muneer Appointed As 1st Woman Chairperson Of PAS

Karachi: Monday, December 07, 2021: Pakistan Advertisers Society (PAS) held its 24th Annual General Body Meeting on Friday, 3rd of December in Karachi.

The AGM was attended by all the major advertisers of Pakistan. The Executive Director of PAS, Mr. Qamar Abbas, presented key initiatives of 2021 along with some of the important industry issues. The agenda for 2022 was also proposed to the members. This was followed by a presentation on the Effie Awards Pakistan by Afsheen Rizavi, project head and General Manager, PAS.

The AGM also marked the end of the two-year tenure of the current Council and the Office Bearers. The elections for the new council were also part of the proceedings.

The newly elected Council comprises of 14 members.

Dr. Zeelaf Munir, CEO and Managing Director of English Biscuit Manufacturers was elected as the Chairperson of the Society. She is the first woman to hold this position. She said “I am honoured and proud to be nominated as the first woman Chair of the Society. I strongly believe in the cause and the role marketing and marketers can play for a sustainable future that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, which will be our area of focus in 2022 and onwards along with some meaningful initiatives for the fraternity. I thank all my council members for putting their trust and faith in my leadership and hope to deliver on their expectations to the best of my ability”.

Khalid Farid, CEO Gillette/CCO P&G was elected as the Vice-Chair and Farheen Salman, CEO, Ekaterra – A Unilever Tea Company was nominated as the General Secretary of the Society.

In addition, for specific initiatives, Asif Aziz, Chief Commercial Officer of Jazz and the outgoing Chairman of PAS, was nominated as the Chair of the Govt. Relations Committee, while Faisal Rana, Director Marketing and Communication, Nestle Pakistan was nominated as the Chair of the newly formed Regional Committee.

Other representative members of the newly elected Executive Council include Ahmed Wahab Shah -The Coca Cola Co., Asiam Haq – Unilever Pakistan, Hassaan Serwani-PEL, Humayun Farooq-Reckitt Benckiser, Humayun Shaikh – Shan Foods, Khurram Koraishy – AlKaram Studio, Nauman Khan – Dabur, Sheikh Adil Hussain-Tapal Tea and Syed Usman Qaiser – Jubilee Life Insurance.

The new council will start its term from 1st of January 2022.

The AGM was concluded on a high note with Asif Aziz handing the Chair to Dr. Zeelaf Munir and thanking all the members of the Society and specially the Council for supporting him during his tenure. He said “I would like to urge all the companies that are part of the PAS fraternity to keep lending their support to this industry body that we have together brought this far. For the companies who are yet to come onboard with us, I would say that the time is now for you to join forces and play your part in making Pakistani brands and communication stand out and shine across the globe.”

Coeus Solutions Ltd Announces A Plan To Invest In Human Capital & Infrastructure Growth

Lahore, Pakistan: Coeus Solutions Ltd announced today a plan to expand their human resource by over 300 new team members ranging from technology operations to sales and marketing. It also announced a new building aquisition with over 10,000 sq feet of covered space as additional office space in Lahore, Pakistan.

The company previously announced a plan to list on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in the first quarter of 2022.

“We plan to grow our team massively in the next weeks, and the new office space is a part of the same expansion plans,” said Ahsan Naseem, CEO of Coeus Solutions Ltd. “Our people organization is our core focus. For this reason, we want to provide a flexible yet comfortable work environment to our team members, whether they want to work from home or in the office”.

Coeus Solutions has offices in Lahore and Berlin. It plans to expand its office locations in Lahore as well as set up new office locations in Islamabad, Peshawar, Karachi, and other cities of Pakistan to tap into the talent in other cities. “We have a strong belief in the young talent of Pakistan. For this reason, we plan to expand aggressively in all major cities.”, added Anum Khan, Head of People Operations.

Pakistan’s prominent religious scholar, Junaid Jamshed is confirmed to be on board the doomed  PIA flight PK661. The airplane carrying around 47 travelers  crashed near Havelian today, Wednesday. Sources reveal that his manager has confirmed about his death in the plane crash.

Junaid Jamshed’s wife was also the passenger on the flight, confirmed Junaid Jamshed’s brother.

PIA spokesperson, while talking to Express Tribune stated, that flight PK-661 disappeared from the radar once it took off. It has crashed near Havelian. News reveals that all passengers are feared to be dead cause of the unfortunate crash.

It is reported that the singer- turned- scholar- turned television host was in Chitral and was traveling for  preaching purposes

The automobile industry has seen massive development in the last two years. Not only in Pakistan, but the world has seen such development. However, where there has been this progression, there has also been a hindrance. The semiconductor chip shortage has really put a dent in all the tech industries. Be it the smartphone one or the automotive one, all have suffered at its hands. Prices of electronics have shot through the roof and refuse to come down. However, after much turmoil, it seems that we may see the end of this shortage sooner than later. A Nissan executive has made a prediction recently.

Nissan is also one of the brands to be impacted by this shortage. Not only do they deliver quality vehicles, but they also do it in due time. You may not be able to hear a lot of complaints from Nissan users. Their sports variants of vehicles are also quite impressive, such as the GTR. That said, we have to know what the executive said in the statement. Are we expected to hear something hopeful or is the news going to be dire?

Nissan And The Shortage

The executive we are talking about is the Chief Operating Officer of Nissan. His name is Ashwani Gupta and he has been at the helm for a bit. According to him, the chip shortage is going to last till Mid-2022. That is still quite a distance off but it is not something that is impossible. We can surely survive with the shortage for six to seven more months! He also further elaborated that the shortage has had an impact on quite a lot of industries. It is going to take a while for operations to return to normal.

This account does conflict with another brand’s account made earlier this year. According to them, the shortage was only going to last till the end of 2021. However, we can see that the issue continues so there must be some more time left. Nevertheless, this is good news to hear because Mid-2022 is not as far off as one might have thought!

Pakistan’s religious leader, Junaid Jamshed and his wife have reportedly died in PIA PK-661 plane crash.The aircraft, flying from Chitral to Islamabad carrying 47 passengers, crashed today, Wednesday, near Havelian.

Pakistani Government Increases Taxes By 50% On Automobile Import

Pakistan is seeing quite a lot of development in the automotive sector. In the last five years, more automobile brands have been introduced in the country than at any point in history. In fact, we are seeing the entry of even more brands in the coming year. The industry is not only rising fast, it is rising with pride. Where there is local production on cars, there is also import. However, with import comes tariffs. In recent news, it seems that the tariff on automobile imports is going to go up by quite a percentage.

Imported vehicles are those that cannot be produced in the country. The reasons for no production can vary but that means the vehicle has to be ordered from abroad. Thus, when it is ordered, it is subjected to taxation on various fronts. The regulatory duty tax is one of them. Just a while back, we came to know that the government might be banning the import of vehicles. However, that seems to have changed.

Tariff On Automobile import

According to the reports we have seen, there has been an amendment. Instead of a complete ban on imported automobiles, there is going to be an increase in tariffs. The increase might just go as high as 50%, depending on the vehicle. That might slow the inflow of imported vehicles in Pakistan. The public might want to go for a local purchase when they see the high tariffs that have to be paid.

We are not saying that this is all good news, but there is something to it. Of course, this is going to be difficult for many auto brands in Pakistan. It would also mean that the new brands will not have as many imports as initially expected. The import increase in tariffs includes electric and hybrid vehicles too, alongside normal gasoline ones. However, we have yet to see how long we have to wait before this change occurs. The impact is going to be quite apparent.

Automobile Production

Electric vehicles with battery packs larger than 50kWh are going to see a 50% increase in regulatory duty. The electric vehicle industry is quite new in Pakistan and relatively newer in the world. It does not have a proper infrastructure to run on, yet. That could change in the coming years but we need electric car imports too. We have one on local production, the MG HS Electric, but we need more.

5 Things Karachiites Do In Northern Pakistan When They See Snow

The coast city, Karachi does give us happiness as we take its ownership but when it comes to weather, it does not have much variety. It is just always windy or hot. And it never snows! Hence, to get to see some of that white royalty, Karachiites make their way up north in winters. While they love the majestic white settled everywhere in Northern Pakistan, what is it that (almost) all Karachiites do there?

Let’s look at the list:

1. Freaking out about snow

Most of them see the snow in Northern Pakistan for the first time in their lives. And while it may not sound as grand to someone who gets it every year like the locals, Karachiites jump up and down looking at the white blankets on the mountains.

2. Stopping mid-journey for the photoshoot

They cannot wait until they get to the hotels obviously so they get out of their vans and buses to pose with that snow.

Well, okay, it is not just the Karachiites doing this. Almost every tourist there does that. As you travel on the roads, you will find cars every minute or two, resting while the group members click pictures of each other.

3. The fake snowball fight

Making snowballs because they have seen so in the movies is all the fun they can think of when in Northern Pakistan. Hence, they get down to try and make snowballs from the hardened snow.

Fellow Karachiites, it’s always better to keep warm if you do not want to think about by what time you will get frostbite.

4. Huddled in blankets

Once reaching the hotel or accommodation, the craze for North would already be in the innermost layer of the blanket. You will find them laden with three or more duvets rethinking about the time they made the travel plans.

5. Not leaving the warmth of the heater

Of course, they won’t even roam around the room if they do not have the heater. And when they do get it, they are for sure never leaving the room.

That said, once they return to the humid Karachi, you will witness them fantasizing about going further up north, especially where they can travel with boots as their feet sink in that snow.

Coca-Cola Pakistan Launches Its First-Ever Plastic Road

With the goal of becoming sustainable, Pakistan is taking leaps in this direction. Many brands that have a presence in the country are also participating in this journey. In such an effort, Walls Unilever curated a play space from waste material in a park in Karachi made from waste material. Next, the baton reached Coca-Cola Pakistan’s hands. With that, they constructed the first plastic road in the midst of Islamabad.

First Plastic Road

The road was officially launched and runs in the F-9 area of Pakistan’s federal capital. The ceremony took place at the National Incubation Centre (NIC). Right after the ceremony, a small patch of the plastic road was tested near Fatima Jinnah Park at F-9. Ataturk Avenue became the next spot for the pilot test. Here, almost a kilometer length was recarpeted with plastic waste and asphalt.

How it was made

To unlock this incredible achievement, a number of players joined hands and that included Coca-Cola Pakistan, NIC Teamup, and CDA. The project involves using plastic waste that is essentially non-biodegradable and takes hundreds, if not thousands, of years to break down and use it into recarpeting of roads. The science involves plastic waste which composes Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polypropylene (PP), High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), and Polyethylene (PE).

Origins of the idea

The idea originates from the fact that tons of waste is discarded in landfills or incinerated. When dumped into landfills, while most of the other water breaks down, the non-biodegradable plastic stay poisoning the land. When incinerated, the gaseous waste leads to extreme air pollution.

Hence, it is better to reuse plastic and reduce the carbon footprint we have on this Earth. It is happening already with some brands recycling their packaging or creating new goods with recycled material. But of course, such measures do not use all of the plastic. This is why Coca-Cola took the initiative to employ the huge amounts of plastic waste into making roads. Should this road be successful in Islamabad, maybe Karachi, a city where we need to do recarpeting every 2 years, can also adopt this technology.

Safe to say, the 1,003 meters (roughly 1km of the plastic road) is momentous to World Without Waste initiative. Coca-Cola launched this initiative in January 2018. The goal is that by 2030, Coca-Cola will collect and recycle every bottle or can it sells.

Coca-Cola initiative seems well on track and so does Pakistan’s aim to fulfill UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The composer here, in this Naat, requests God to make their intentions turn for the better. If their heart is clean of second thoughts, they can make decisions with a clearer mind frame.

5. Qasida Burda Shareef

The Durood Shareef is encouraged, towards a Muslim, to be recited after every prayer. It is quite beneficial when recited. The benefits of its recitation are portrayed in this Naat. Being closer to God also requires one to believe and recite the ‘Durood Shareef’ as part of this Naat. Junaid Jamshed won many hearts with the release of this Naat and continues to do so.

6. Mohabbat Kya Hai

The name states a question in this Naat. The question asks what exactly is love. As one can already imagine, the love here is not referred to as one with someone in this world. This love refers to the bond one develops with God. Taking time out of worldly life and trying to remember and get closer to God is part of what this Naat explains. Samsung Finally Begins Operations At TV Plant In Pakistan

[Update December 7th, 2021]: It was announced back in September that the tech giant is planning to start TV production in Pakistan. With lightning speed, the plant was built and now, it has officially been operationalized. According to the official tweet by Adviser to Prime Minister of Pakistan for Commerce and Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood, the plant is located in Karachi. The Plant has been established in collaboration with R&R Industries, he said.

For now, it will be able to produce 50,000 sets. But in 2 years, the capacity will increase to 100,000 sets annually. The local partner, R&R Industries hope for the creation of more than 700 local jobs. Given the rising unemployment, it comes as good news for Pakistanis.

 

[Update December 1st, 2021]: While it was already huge news that the tech giant was coming to Pakistan to manufacture TVs, there is yet another amazing development. Samsung has begun production for their smartphones in the country as well.

In talks with a local news publication, Faisal Subzwari, chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Industries and Production said that they were informed the tech giant has started the operations of manufacturing.

Lucky Group has partnered with Samsung for the project. According to them, they are aiming towards producing anywhere between 2.5 to 3 million smartphones every year. Since the production is manual, it will lead to a substantial increase in employment within the fields of engineering.

[September 22, 2021]: Developments in the sector of technology are not even a daily phenomenon at the moment. In fact, the fast-paced industry witnesses a new update multiple times in one day. Amongst such developments, we got to know that Samsung will be establishing a TV manufacturing plant in Karachi, Pakistan.

The news came to light thanks to Abdul Razzak Dawood, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Trade and Investment. According to him, the plant will be complete by the 4th quarter of 2021. He said that the plant is being realized with the help of R&R Industries. As it turns out, the plant is predicted to produce almost 50,000 units of Samsung TV every year. Considering the country’s population, the number sounds too small but Samsung’s products are expensive so not everyone is able to buy them.

Of course, now that the production is happening in Pakistan only, maybe the South Korean company would decrease prices.

The advisor said: “This is a vindication of MOC’s “Make-in-Pakistan” policy for industrialization via rationalization of input costs and other incentives.”

Local Manufacturing

This news comes in line with Pakistan’s current policy of promoting local manufacturing or assembly of international products. The idea is to reduce the country’s reliance on imports to be able to strengthen the economy and Samsung has actively been doing this.

Just a few months back, Samsung Gulf Electronics Co. got into collaboration with Lucky Cement’s subsidiary, Lucky Motor Corporation (LMC). The venture was for locally producing Samsung phones in Pakistan. The manufacturing is set to happen at the Bin Qasim Industrial Park, Special Economic Zone, Port Qasim, Karachi. Now, the news is that Samsung Electronics will also produce TV right here in the mega-city.

According to the news, the facility will be complete by the end of December 2021.

As is evident, Apple and Samsung, and their fans are always at each other’s toes to show how they are better than the other. Knowing that, and the ongoing hype of Apple launching the iPhone 13 series and iOS 15, it was expected that Samsung would come up with the news to take off interest from Apple. But did it work, only time will tell?

National AI Policy Will Secure Digital Banking Soon

The federal government is now focusing more on countermeasures and after the first-ever Cybersecurity Policy. The government is soon going to launch national artificial intelligence (AI) policy. The industry experts believe that it would help secure mainly the digital banking system. The measures are taken amidst the growing threat of cybersecurity and frequent hacking of data systems even of national institutions.

The Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Syed Aminul Haq shared the news. Meanwhile, addressing a conference titled BlockChain at a local auditorium.

Referring to the recent attacks suffered by the country’s banking systems, Haque stressed the importance of securing critical data

“Cybersecurity is the first important pillar of Digital Policy 2021 of IT Ministry,” he said. “Digital transformation of Pakistan corresponds with Cybersecurity. Pakistan’s first cybersecurity policy is approved by the federal cabinet this year. And now the government is fully committed to introducing national AI policy soon.”

The federal cabinet has already been made paperless by shifting work to tablets and android cell phones,” said the federal minister. “The governance of Parliament would also be made paperless by this government.”

While bridging the gap between academia and industry, he stressed the need for close cooperation among academia, industry, and the IT ministry in introducing emerging technologies in Pakistan.

He said the gap between academia and industry needs to narrow down and IT academicians must start supervising industrial projects through an agreement between industries and universities.

“Our ministry is committed to equipping 60 per cent of the young population of Pakistan with IT expertise by providing 3G and 4G services especially in the remotest areas which are far away from urban centres,” he added.

The conference also featured speakers from Europe, America, and the Middle East, aside from experts from Pakistan. They further exchanged views and experiences on BlockChain technology.

When it comes to food, we have been treated to some bizarre new trends. While we thought panipuri would be saved from the ordeal, that hasn’t proven to be the case. Not long ago, images of butter chicken golgappas and Maggi pani puri were circulating on the internet, leaving users with a bad taste in their mouths.

Now, a vendor in Gujarat is selling fire panipuri. In a video going viral, the vendor lights up a stuffed pani puri and places it in the customer’s mouth. The trend is the second one to gain hype on social media after the famous fire paan which went viral a few years ago.

Pani Puri On Fire

Instead of simply serving the crunchy snacks loaded with tangy water, the Gujarat vendor decided to light it up and serve the flaming food right into the customer’s mouth. Golgappa or Pani puri is one of the most loved street foods in both India and Pakistan. There is a difference of opinion about which state offers the best variety of this lip-smacking snack.

While many vendors keep only one type of tamarind water, at places you can devour Pani puri with different varieties of water and chutneys. Now, taking the game to another level, a vendor in Gujarat is selling fire panipuri. In a video going viral, the vendor lights up a stuffed pani puri and places it in the customers.

The stuffed panipuri has camphor in it, which adds a fiery twist to it. The snack is now being compared with the fire paan, which is already quite famous in several parts of the country.

We’re always quick to jump on the bandwagon and criticise Indian entertainment so it’s confusing and also unbelievable that we’re quick to copy it too.

Amir Liaquat is known for passing problematic comments and also has a religious background. How then can his persona fit with a reality TV show? We’re sure the show is going to have men and women together which itself might get him worked up. In addition to that, it is absurd to imagine that Liaquat will be hosting Ramadan transmissions and a reality show altogether.

Amazon seems to be on fire, taking the initiative to establish its own shipping service. This will allow the e-Commerce company to evade the waiting period that the supply chain companies usually charge them.

This move comes about because of the shortage in container supply. Already, the by-sea shipping journey requires time, and the fact that containers are limited, brands are often put on hold for months to ship their products to other countries. Moreover, due to COVID and of course, the shortage of containers as mentioned, the prices have increased from a mere $2000 to $20,0000. Realizing that consumers also shy away from buying products with much waiting time and the drastic increase in prices, Amazon has begun taking over this link in the process as well.

Now, if Amazon is posed with a problem, they just have to bring forth solutions of their own stature, don’t they? Imagine making its own 53-foot cargo containers and that too, somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 in number. An ocean freight analyst, Steve Ferreira informed an international publication.

Ferreira said, “When they bring these containers onto U.S. soil, once they unload them, guess what? They get to be used in the domestic system and the rail system. They don’t have to return them to Asia as everyone else does.”

When did they plan on getting into ocean freight though? Lauren Beagen, the maritime lawyer has an answer to that. She was associated with the Federal Maritime Commission back in 2015. It was there she got to know about the company registering with the Commission. That was the official indication of their plan. In 2017, with the help of a Chinese subsidiary, they started their freight operations.

Some stats on Amazon shipping

SJ Consulting Group has released stats on the increasing number at which Amazon has been shipping its products on its own. Back in 2019, the e-Commerce company was shipping less than 47% of the packages. Now, the number has risen to 72%.

Year after Amazon’s plans, renowned retailers such as Ikea, Walmart, and Target among others are scrambling to hire their own vessels for shipping.

Goods they can transport

Sea shipping is one matter but Amazon has taken measures on a whole new level for highest-margin goods. For these goods, the company has leased 10 long-haul planes. These planes are ‘converted Boeing 777’, and just one plane is able to transport 220,000 pounds of cargo at a time. Their leased 1,000-container freighters can transport 180 times what one plane can, according to the data from Ocean Audit.

Long story short, the e-Commerce company might be incurring loss for now, in the process to take over the supply chain across countries, but eventually, they are setting grounds for substantial profits.
