PSO Posts Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs 4.2 billion in Q1FY2019

PSO

Pakistan State Oil, the country’s flagship oil marketing company, has announced it Q1FY19 financial results. The Company has reported a Profit after Tax (PAT) of Rs. 4.2 billion. The announcement was made during a Board of Management (BoM) meeting at PSO Headquarters in Karachi convened to review the Company’s performance for the quarter ended September 30, 2018.

Despite numerous challenges, PSO’s gross profit grew by 19% while it maintained its leadership position in the liquid fuels market with an overall share of 40% during the period under review. During the Q1FY19, PSO imported 48% of total industry imports and uplifted 34% of total country refinery production in the country.

The Company has shown a healthy bottom line in spite of a mix of external and internal factors that have negatively affected the local industry growth. These factors include the influx of smuggled products, increasing international price trends, adulteration, heavy discounts offered by new entrants, and exploitation of the IFEM mechanism.

The BoM also discussed key challenges the company has been facing in recent months including the reduction in other income consequential to lower interest income, higher exchange loss on account of PKR devaluation, and increase in finance cost due to higher markup rates and borrowing levels. These have resulted in a decline in the Company’s PAT.

As of September 30th, 2018, PSO’s total outstanding receivables (inclusive of LPS) from the Power Sector, PIA, and SNGPL stood at Rs. 310 billion vs Rs. 316 billion as of June 30, 2018. This is in addition to Rs. 21 billion recoverable from the Ministry of Finance on account of exchange rate differential on foreign currency loans and price differential claims.

The management is continuously pursuing the Ministries of Energy and Finance for re-payment of PSO’s receivables.

The management expressed sincere gratitude to all stakeholders including Government of Pakistan, especially the Ministry of Energy and shareholders of the Company for their continued support. The Management also thanked PSO team for their resolute and commitment as the company gears up to meet the upcoming challenges.

Project Hope: EBM Collaborates with the Department for International Development (DFID) and Reckitt Benckiser (RB)

Pakistan’s leading biscuit manufacturer, EBM has collaborated with the Department For International Development (DFID), Reckitt Benckiser Pakistan and other product partners including Shield Corporation, Shan Foods and Santex with support from the UK DFID -funded Business Innovation Facility (BIF) and Rural Support Programmes Network (RSPN) on Project Hope, which aims to  empower rural women and help eradicate various health issues such as diarrhoea currently prevalent within numerous rural communities in Pakistan.

EBM’s objective behind this collaboration is to create awareness regarding health as well as the importance of nutrition and hygiene that will help reduce the risk of diarrhea and other related illnesses.

The project’s empowerment plan involves the distribution of baskets filled with essentials for health and hygiene directly to rural areas. In addition, EBM is offering Peek Freans Gluco, one of its leading brands known for its richness in necessary calcium and vitamins, at affordable rates. Project Hope has been designed to help low-income households help themselves as well as encourage them to bring about long-term positive change within their communities.

It focuses specifically on women, who are considered the main decision-makers of the households, to adopt good hygiene and cleaning practices in order to prevent the spread of illness and keep their families healthy.  All the collaborating institutions have come together to integrate this model and scale it up to reach 1 million households across Punjab in order to ensure greater social impact in a sustainable manner.

While speaking on the occasion, Laura Kelly, the UK-based Head of Business Engagement at the Department for International Development, said, “Project Hope is bringing together companies and the greater civil society to get health and hygiene products to new markets. The approach is also helping to economically empower rural women for business and development.”

Dr. Zeelaf Munir, Managing Director, and CEO of EBM, also expressed her views on the need for sustainable development within Pakistan. “EBM has always believed in giving the best to its consumers. The ethos of the company has always been working towards the greater good, so this initiative really ties in with our own philosophy. We have believed in sustainable practices from the very beginning and that when a community grows, so does the company.”

She further added, “It goes without saying that the provision of good quality nutrition has enabled populations all over the world to thrive and succeed. By instilling the need for the adoption of nutritious foods and hygiene, we will be taking one step closer towards the possibility of a much brighter future for Pakistan.”

Samsung Electronics Posts Record in Q3

Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics posted quarterly operating and net profits for the July-September on Wednesday.

The South Korean tech giant has recovered from a series of setbacks, including a humiliating recall and the jailing of its de facto chief, to post a series of record-breaking numbers.

The profits have been driven by its mighty semiconductor unit, which provides chips for its own devices as well as competitors including Apple.

But that run was coming to an end, Samsung signaled in a statement, saying that it expected “overall earnings across the company to decline” in the fourth quarter due to seasonal factors in the semiconductor market.

Huawei & Xiaomi Lock Horns in a Brand War

Going into 2019, “earnings are forecast to be weak for the first quarter” for the same reason, it added before business conditions improved.

For Q3 2018, Samsung reported operating profit of 17.6 trillion won ($15.4 billion), up 21 percent from a year ago and a record for any quarter.

Net profit also jumped 17.5 percent year-on-year to reach 13.1 trillion won for the July-September period, also a record, while sales rose 5.5 percent to 65.4 trillion won.

The figures — in line with estimates announced earlier this month — were “driven mainly by the continued strength of the memory (chip) business”, Samsung said.

The unit dominates the global market and the firm has invested tens of billions of dollars each year to build and expand its factories.

It reported an operating profit of 13.6 trillion won, the second consecutive quarterly record, offsetting sagging profits at the mobile phone division.

Mobile handsets once contributed the lion’s share of Samsung Electronics’ overall sales and profit, but the unit reported a third-quarter operating profit of only 2.22 trillion won, down 33 percent year-on-year.

Margins were squeezed in the face of growing competition with archrival Apple for high-end devices, and Chinese firms churning out cheaper devices in the mid- and low-end segments, where Samsung said sales fell.

But investors welcomed the figures and the firm’s share price was up 0.71 percent in morning trade on the Seoul stock market.

Huawei & Xiaomi Lock Horns in a Brand War

Huawei vs Xiaomi

China’s top smartphone manufacturers Huawei and Xiaomi locked horns after Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun claimed that the Mi Mix 3 surpasses the Huawei P20 Pro at the Mix 3 launch.

Whereas Richard Yu Chengdong, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, clapped back at Lei Jun claiming:

Any smartphone maker cannot surpass Huawei’s P20 Pro in a short period of time. Only we can surpass ourselves.

The tussle between the two of the biggest brands over the Mi Mix 3 and Huawei P20 Pro has intensified into a trade war.

While the P20 Pro is the world’s first smartphone to be equipped with a triple camera system offering professional photography at $760, the Mix 3 camera is also quite impressive.

DxOMark, a leading source which ranks smartphone cameras for their image quality and ratings has given the P20 Pro a score of 109 while it has awarded Mix 3 with 103. Both the tech-giants are fighting over market share overseas especially over the European market.

Xiaomi’s chief at the launch event added:

Unregistered Mobile Phone Users to be Charged with Regulatory Duty

Regulatory-Duty on Unregistered phones

A small penalty in the form of regulatory duty has been introduced by the government. This duty is for users who continue to use unregistered mobile phones.

Blocked phones can be unblocked by paying the fine along with the penalty at the nearest customs point. As of now, it is estimated that the market has suffered $1.5 billion of loss due to imports of illegal phones.

In 2017-18, the value of mobile phones imported stood at $847.656 million, however, over the years the figure dropped, which had been over the $1bn mark at one time. Increase in customs duty became one of the many reasons for it being smuggled.

The phones which were smuggled within Pakistan via different channels will now be blocked using Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has launched DIRBS back in May to counter the use of substandard phones being illegally smuggled within the country.

Mobile Phone Registration With PTA: Complete Guide

Furthermore, a source had revealed to a local news publication that following November 15th, all consumers will have to text their IMEI number after making a purchase to 8484 to which they will receive a reply whether or not their device is compliant.

In case the device is non-compliant, the customer will be requested to pay the penalty within the next two months along with customs duty, or the mobile will be completely unusable.

PTA suggests that nearly 160mn non-compliant and compliant mobile devices are active. The source has also shared that the government is currently working on the rates for regulatory duty and will share it with the federal cabinet.

As of now, the rate of regulatory duty is Rs250 per mobile sets worth less than $60. It is 10pc of the value of mobile phone if its value ranges between $60-130 per set. It will be 20pc of the value if it is more than $130 and above.

The unregistered mobile phones are those devices that are not registered with the Global System for Mobile Association.

Naveed and other victims of a similar situation have been protesting against this decision for the past few days, but no action has been taken so far.

Giving a 15-day deadline, Naveed Rizvi has warned that if their termination is not taken back, he will set himself on fire so that his fellow workers can gain the attention of the concerned authorities.

He stated the fact that only lower grade employees, whose salary ranges from 20k to 50k, are being fired while no one is betting an eye on people earning a handsome amount. He revealed that they are the one who suffer the most during the field work yet they are getting repaid for their services like this.

Naveed Rizvi has suggested that the salary of the terminated workers can be compensated if they cut off some amount from the higher-grade officers and this way no one gets to lose their job.

The senior journalist has also appreciated some of the media houses who have not fired their employees and encouraged their decision.

Ending his video message with “Pakistan Zindabad”, he has also requested the authorities to take action against this decision otherwise, he has no other choice than to immolate himself outside Lahore Press Club after 15 days.

Let’s hope his voice reaches the those at the helm and this issue gets resolved as soon as possible.
