World Cancer Day is observed on 4th February to stand in solidarity with cancer survivors and those who have lost their loved ones to the rigorous disease. The day is also important because it allows people to disseminate more information pertaining to it.

Pakistan, as a developed country, has higher rates of cancer and we’re about to explain everything you need to know about the ‘why’. Keep reading to find out the lifestyle changes you can make to reduce the likelihood of getting it.

What Sort of Cancer Is Most Common in Pakistan?

In all countries, there is a particular type of cancer that is more common. The type of cancers most common in both genders in the Pakistani population is not that surprising. They include breast, lip and oral cavity, lung, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and colorectum.

Many of these are also those who have a high mortality rate attached to them.

What Makes Pakistanis More Susceptible?

Doctors and studies suggest that in the future the burden of cancer in Pakistan will rise. This is believed to be due to the lifestyle adoption in Pakistan which is linked to an increased risk of cancer. For instance, smoking, physical inactivity, improper diet, and a decreased number of pregnancies in economically developing countries can increase the risk.

These factors trigger cancers like lung, breast, and colorectal cancers. As we just shared, these are already abundant in economically transitioning countries.

There Is A Significant Trend of Late Diagnosis

In Pakistan, many patients reach the diagnosis stage when it is too late. This is usually because of misconceptions pertaining to the disease and poor knowledge of symptoms. For instance, a common myth is that artificial sweeteners, phones, lasers, and fizzy drinks cause cancer. Many elders stay away from these and believe they are out of danger.

In addition to this, the staggering rate of illiteracy and poor social status is also behind the late diagnosis. These factors culminate in a decreased survival rate for the disease in the country.

Lifestyle Changes That Help Prevent Cancer

One of the most important changes that can be made is: to quit smoking. Passive smoking is equally as dangerous in the long term as active so look out for yourself and encourage your loved ones to do the same. Staying at a healthy weight by looking after your diet is another key change.

SBP Introduces Instant And Free Person-To-Person Payments Under Raast

State Bank of Pakistan has issued instructions that will enable Person-to-Person (P2P) fund transfers in the country through Raast, Pakistan’s Instant Payment System developed by the State Bank. Raast—an Urdu word that means correct and direct—offers an instant, reliable and zero-cost digital payment system to the people of Pakistan. SBP believes that the launch of Raast P2P service will not only provide a convenient and hassle-free digital fund transfer service to customers but will also provide an efficient and enabling payments infrastructure that would pave the way for digitization of the economy and promotion of digital financial services in the country. SBP has provided an explanatory video on YouTube and SBP’s website that explains to the public in simple terms how to make payments and transfer funds using Raast. Under Raast Person-to-Person (P2P) fund transfers and settlement services, bank customers would be able to send and receive funds in their accounts using their bank’s mobile application, internet banking, or over-the-counter services. For customers’ facilitation, they can set their registered mobile phone number as their Raast ID and link it to their preferred International Bank Account Number (IBAN) using the bank’s mobile application, internet banking, or visiting their bank branch. Once a customer has set her/his mobile phone number as the Raast ID, others can send money to her/him using her/his mobile phone number without the need to know the account number or any other details. Bank customers can still use Raast service for sending or receiving funds using their IBANs even if they do not have a Raast ID or prefer to use their IBAN.

SBP has directed all banks to make Raast Person-to-Person fund transfer service available on at least three customer channels including mobile application, internet banking and branch counters. The list of banks that have completed the necessary technological upgrades and other needed preparations and are offering Raast P2P services to their account holders as of today is given below. More banks will start offering Raast P2P services after completing their needed technological upgrades and other preparations to offer Raast P2P. SBP has directed banks to ensure that funds successfully transferred through Raast should be credited into the recipients’ accounts within 20 seconds of receiving the credit advice from Raast system. In order to promote the use of digital financial services in the country, banks have been advised not to levy any charges on Raast related services and all transactions conducted through Raast would be free for end customers. To facilitate banks in this regard, SBP will also offer free-of-cost Raast services to banks. Further, to facilitate their customers, banks shall not assign a minimum transaction size. In general, banks shall allow maximum transaction limits of PKR 200,000 per transaction or higher depending on the bank’s assessment of the risk profile of the customer. For particular account types where the SBP has prescribed limits from time to time, the maximum transaction limit could be lower than PKR 200,000 per transaction. SBP has advised banks to provide a smooth, convenient, and hassle-free user experience to their customers using Raast.

Banks are required to ensure continuous and uninterrupted availability of all channels on which Raast services are being offered. For this purpose, banks shall strengthen their Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with their vendors and service providers. Banks have also been advised to ensure availability of a fully equipped 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC), Security Operations Center (SOC) and call center /helpdesk fully equipped with agents who are well versed with Raast functionality, and effective customer complaints and disputes resolution mechanism for timely resolution of customer issues.

Banks have also been advised to take all measures to encourage their customers to use Raast services and facilitate them in its usage. In this regard, they shall ensure that customer awareness messages are broadcasted through SMS, emails and digital/social media platforms. The enabling instructions for Raast’s person-to-person transfers have been issued to all banks, Electronic Money institutions, Payment System Operators (PSOs) and Payment System Providers (PSPs) and mark the second phase of the rollout of the instant payment system.

Raast is being developed in collaboration with Karandaaz, Pakistan, and introduced in phases. The first phase of Raast, Bulk Payments, was launched by the Prime Minister in January 2021. With the launch of Raast, Pakistan joined a select club of countries that have either launched or are in the process of launching Instant Payment Systems. Raast is fully owned and operated by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Karachi, Pakistan – 03 February 2022: Global Soccer Ventures’ (GSV) national hunt for the 20 NexGen Football Stars finalists set for the national showdown at KPT Stadium on 5th February 2022 at 10am.Karel Fraeye ran Pakistan’s biggest talent hunt drive under St Pat’s development plan in collaboration with Kamyab Jawan Program.

GSV NexGen Football Stars trials has been delivered in 9 out of 10 cities successfully and include; Islamabad, Muzaffarabad, Peshawar, Sialkot, Multan, Sukkur, Quetta, Faisalabad, and Lahore.
Now Karachi is in the spotlight with the arrival of Brian Kerr with his academy director Ger O Brian to oversee the grand finale selection of Pakistan’s emerging football gems. In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. The seventy years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6th February 1952 when the queen was 25 years old.

On account of the event, there will be year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth and around the world as communities and people come together to celebrate The Queen’s historic reign. Meanwhile, the queen and members of the Royal Family will travel around the country to undertake a variety of engagements throughout the year.

An extended bank holiday, from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June, will be approved. It will allow communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone. Across the four days, the celebrations will include public events and community activities. As well as national moments of reflections on The Queen’s 70 years of service.

The Events

The anniversary itself falls on 6 February. However, the celebrations are due to take place in the first week of June. Celebrations for her Silver Jubilee in 1977, Golden Jubilee in 2002, and Diamond Jubilee in 2012 all took place in the summer. For 2022, the main events will take place between Thursday 2 and Sunday 5 June.

Moreover, the Queen’s birthday also falls in June.

Thursday 2 June

The Queen’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour): Over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians will come together in the traditional Parade to mark The Queen’s official birthday, usually held on the second Saturday in June.

Beginning at Buckingham Palace, the Parade will move down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade. The Members of the Royal Family will be on horseback and in carriages. The Parade will close with the traditional RAF fly-past. The Queen and Members of the Royal Family will watch it from the Palace balcony.

Platinum Jubilee Beacons: The United Kingdom’s long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings, and Coronations with the lighting of beacons will be continued to mark the Platinum Jubilee. Has a marketing strategy gone severely wrong or simply a creepy bus ad made by creepy people? Channel 4 created an ad that was imprinted on a double-decker bus and it has gone viral… for all the wrong reasons. Though many hold that all publicity is good publicity, in this case, we might just see the exception.

What Is The Ad?

Channel 4 is a free-to-air British public network and the double-decker bus which was imprinted by them was also spotted in the UK. The ad is basically that they have written a sexual innuendo for each compartment on the upper deck. Have a look at it!

Who Spoke Up Against It?

Tracy King is the person who spotted it and couldn’t stay quiet about it. She is a writer and producer based in London and she was simply appalled by the ad. Many passengers may be unaware when they step into the bus and take their seat that Channel 4 has categorised them into something sexual. Moreover, imagine you’re sitting there, unaware, and someone takes a picture of you!

My background is marketing. In general you have to be very careful with adverts that include the public without their consent, and that goes double for public transport. Passengers shouldn’t have to navigate ‘am I the butt of a joke on my way to work today’.

Tracy King’s argument is against non-consenting passengers being involved in such ads. The ad is a marketing failure and a PR nightmare.

Why Is It So Creepy?

Making sexualised jokes to the unconsenting public can be punished by law. In the day and age where the fight is to make public spaces safer, this ad is a regressive step. A problematic man can very well walk up to the space where it says ‘loves naked attraction’ and molest/assault/harass anyone sitting there as part of a joke! Their defence will be that the ad says it too!

Moreover, over half of the women have been approximated to be sexually harassed or terrorised in London’s public transport. This ad makes their trauma and experience worse and also undermines it.

In a now edited post, the publication is under fire for their remarks for praising the scarf. The remarks were deemed hypocritical given the french senate passed a bill opposing headscarves for women across the nation on 18th January.

The French Senate also voted to ban hijabs for female athletes.

“White women wear a headscarf and its couture. Black and Brown women wear hijab and it is oppression or a war on secularism.” Another user followed.

That sounds about right! This could be called a clear case of cultural appropriation but sadly the hijab/scarfs are not given enough respect, to begin with.

BMW Group Significantly Increases Use Of Low-Carbon Steel

The BMW Group continues to reduce CO2 emissions in its supplier network as part of its ambitious ongoing sustainability activities. Steel produced using natural gas or hydrogen and green power, instead of fossil resources like coal, makes a vital contribution to this.

The BMW Group has now signed a corresponding agreement with Salzgitter AG for the delivery of low-carbon steel. New agreement with Salzgitter AG will provide for delivery of low-carbon steel starting 2026.

BMW Group expands sourcing of low-carbon steel to two suppliers, meeting up to 40% of steel demand at European plants. As a result, CO2 emissions savings will sore up to 400,000 tons per year. Meanwhile, steel remnants from BMW Group plants will be reused in established circular economy.

The Agreement

“This is an important step in substantially reducing CO2 emissions at source in the supplier network,” said Joachim Post, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network.

“Our aim is to reduce vehicles’ lifecycle carbon footprint with a holistic approach. With steel, in particular, we are leading the way by sourcing low-carbon steel for our plants in Europe in the future.”

The BMW Group already signed an agreement with Swedish startup H2 Green Steel in October of last year. H2 Green Steel will supply the BMW Group’s European plants with steel produced exclusively using hydrogen and green power from renewable energies from 2025 onwards. This process will reduce CO2 emissions by around 95%.

Together, the two agreements will supply over 40% of the steel required by the company’s European plants and save around 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. BMW Group press plants in Europe process more than half a million tonnes of steel per year.

“Salzgitter AG is putting ‘circularity’ at the centre of its new strategy,” said Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG.

“We firmly believe that closed loops of recoverable materials can only realize their full effect with strong partners. We are delighted about the circular economy cooperation with the BMW Group and the agreement to supply green steel to our long-standing customer. Partnering for Transformation – this is how we will translate our new corporate vision into practice.”
