The Facebook Whistleblower

The former Facebook employee leaked multiple internal documents of the company. This has pulled a storm of criticism, hate and legal action towards Zuckerberg’s creation. The former employee, Frances Haugen, 37, shared her collected documents with the Wall Street Journal and US law enforcement. They show that the company is lying to the public by saying it is making significant progress against hate, violence, and misinformation.

Frances Hughes said clearly that she repeatedly witnessed a conflict of interest between Facebook and the public good. “And Facebook, over and over again, chose to optimise for its own interests, like making more money,” said Hughes, the whistleblower.

Why Is Haugen Speaking Out?

Haugen joined Facebook in 2019 as a product manager on the company’s civic integrity team. Her role focused on issues related to elections worldwide. She also mentioned in her interviews that she accepted the job on a condition. She said she would only work for Facebook if she could work to help the company combat misinformation. The issue is personal for her— she lost a relationship with a friend because of online conspiracies.

However, Haugen explained the internal workings of Facebook were anything but. She decided to speak up because she was alarmed by company policies that continuously prioritized profit over public safety. Haugen explicitly said: “The version of Facebook that exists today is tearing our societies apart and causing ethnic violence around the world.”

Is Facebook Intrinsically Malevolent?

Haugen added that she felt Facebook was unwilling to change its toxic platform. The company not only refused to take action needed to address the issues but also never acknowledged the extent of their complacency. As a result, she left the company in May this year.

However, the whistleblower of Facebook also believes, “No one at Facebook is malevolent.” She added that while Mark Zuckerberg never set out to make a hateful, toxic, and exclusive platform, the effects of the company’s choices are grave. It is more than fascinating also how Haugen was able to speak up provided these companies have such stringent laws: we’re sure more is yet to unfold.

The three popular social media platforms, Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, all went down last night for users worldwide. After 6 hours of the outage and people bombarding on Twitter for it seemed the only avenue left, Facebook comes back online along with the other platforms.

Instagram kept showing the Server Error message. The Facebook site only said that something went wrong. WhatsApp just refused to work.

Net worth of Zuckerberg and Facebook go down

Considering all three platforms are powered by Facebook which is owned by Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire, he suffered a huge loss. His net worth fell down to almost USD 6 billion. It was also partially due to the whistleblower. Moreover, in just a night, Facebook’s stock plummeted by almost 4.9%.

Configuration outage?

Facebook has blamed it on configuration change. It seems that someone made changes on the backbone routers which had a “cascading effect” on the communications of the data center.

To be exact, they said:

“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication.”

According to the admeasurement firm, Standard Media Index, Facebook lost $545,000 every hour during the outage.

Santosh Janardhan, Facebook’s VP of infrastructure said, “no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.”

As a possible root cause for the issue, it was earlier said to be a problem in the Domain Name System (DNS). ThousandEyes, at around 10 pm Pakistan time, the internet analysis division at Cisco company said:

“ThousandEyes tests can confirm that at 15:40 UTC on October 4, the Facebook application became unreachable due to DNS failure. Facebook’s authoritative DNS nameservers became unreachable at that time. The issue is still ongoing as of 17:02 UTC.”

Facebook Whistleblower

The outage incident comes right around the time when Frances Haugen, the whistleblower at Facebook accused the social media giant of not making progress against hate, violence, and misinformation. The ex-employee said that she had joined the company to combat misinformation. However, after seeing firsthand how Facebook kept prioritizing profits over the public good, she could not take it anymore. She chose to leak a cache of internal documents exposing the truth of Facebook.

Could both matters be linked? Whatever the case, October is clearly not Zuckerberg’s month.

What happened though?

Recently, Pizza Hut conducted a campaign that promised a reward. The reward was supposed to be 1 XL Pizza, 6 garlic breads, and 1 Coca-Vola. But when the reward recipient contacted Pizza Hut, they took an informal tone and said that the recipient will just get the pizza and that too, large.

Infuriated, this Pakistani took the screenshot and tweeted it. The caption read: “Will take 2 weeks? Large only? Forget it, keep your pizza man…”

He might not have gotten too much attention but when Pizza Hut’s official handle replied to the Pakistani, he was bound to get eyeballs.

Brands trolls Pizza Hut

Brands jumped in to troll Pizza Hutt and to cash in on the hype as well.

Dipitt Official retweeted Zohad’s angry tweet saying that they would love to send him sauces because they were the ‘real deal’.

Artioology also tweeted that if Zohad was in Pakistan these days, they would sent him a hand painted pizza on a canvas.

Vaporwavecompany hopped on to the bandwagon as well. But they brought in creativity too. Using Zohad’s emotions, the brand said that they could send a disposable vape to smoke away the anger.

Seeing the negative publicity, Pizza Hut thought to salvage the situation only to spiral it further out of control.

Netizens jump in

It was the netizens’ turn to take the lead now. In place of Zohad, they decided to respond which was clearly a rude tone.

Domino’s loyal users beckoned their brand to join in on the conversation too.

The world is full of places that we should know go without certain precautions. Just like that, the online world can often be a dark place. You don’t know who it is that is hiding behind an ordinary online profile. Anonymity makes people fearless and this can turn out to be quite adverse at times. Despite there being so much information available, there is so much about the internet that we don’t know. It seems that Android users have been receiving a security update in recent days.

However, once they install the update, it turns to be Malware! Malware is dangerous for your device and can really cause havoc there. The malware is disguising itself as a security update, luring people into a false sense of security. Once they decide to update, the phone feels as if it’s been taken over by an outside force. Nothing is safe so we better stay aware of this particular ‘Update’.

Android And FluBot

FluBot is something that has been in operation since early 2021. It first appeared in Spain and started to spread from there. It is, basically, Android spyware, that aims to steal financial login and passwords from your device. It has made yet another ingenious method to rob people of their credentials. What happens is that you will receive a text message that says delivery is waiting for you and that a form needs to be filled out. In some ways, it can even say you received something huge like iPhone 13 or so.

If you click the link, it will take you to a red notice screen and say that the device has been infected with FluBot, which is android spyware. However, we must ask you to take note that your device has not been infected yet. The red notice will ask you to install a security update to get rid of the virus. However, this is where the actual trouble is. This security update is where the actual malware lies. The Computer Emergency Response Team in New Zealand first reported this.

Staying Careful

It is nice to see that the warning includes the trademark symbol of FluBot, to show how authentic it is. The people behind it are using FluBot as an excuse to release the malware itself into your phones. If you see any such text message appearing with a link, simply ignore it and delete it. Additionally, we request that you go to your android settings and turn off installations from unknown apps.

This way, even if you click on the security update, the phone itself will not download anything. Most antiviruses will know to block FluBot as it is quite recognized now. Above all, be careful of clicking on anything you don’t know about on the internet!

Since the past decade, PR has seen significant progress in the market. Just like any other industry, the rise in technology has created many challenge-driven opportunities in the PR market. Although there is still a lot to learn, the country’s PR bodies have done well in learning the latest PR mechanisms, from traditional day media to the newer phenomena like Search Engine Optimization. The country’s PR fraternity did well `to learn, unlearn and relearn the constantly unfolding trends in the profession.

Recently, we heard from the PR maestros of Pakistan at the Comms Hero week where they addressed several questions related to how PR has evolved in Pakistan. Samra Mulsim the Chief Nut at Walnut Communications & CEO Alchemists , Aamir Abbasi a chartered PR practitioner from Chartered Institute of Public Relations UK, Attiyah Inaam, Senior Manager Corporate Communications, Sustainability & PR at EBM, Qurat ul Ain Shahid a certified director ICAP, and Syed M. Ayaz the Chief Business officer at Nutshell Communications all sat down together and engaged in a conversation about PR.

Their detailed discussion was pretty insightful as it painted the perfect picture of how PR has changed throughout the years and also where our country is still lacking. Compared to previous years, PR is now very real-time. Like the rest of the world, the country has moved from paper to digital. The news that used to take days to reach us now only takes a few minutes, hence changing the very fabric of human lives.

Gender Ratio

Finally one female-centric profession in Pakistan. There are in fact many organizations where women are heading PR and Corporate Communications functions and the trend is likely to grow. On the agency side as well we see a lot of women coming into this profession

Specialized Agencies

Its no more just about corporate PR and writing press release. There are now agencies who specialize in different fields like exclusively managing celebrities, influencers, and sport, etc.

Monitoring Softwares

Monitoring software are pretty much there but a lot of the agencies & brands are not data-driven – however, the future is in numbers. Discussions are going on social media (in FB groups, Twitter, Instagram) & that is where your key audience is sitting. It’s important to be tracking & monitoring this information now.

Technology has played a huge role in the expansion of PR opportunities in Pakistan. The massive shift from one-way, slow-paced communication to the rapid two-way fire has created room for innovation. Despite it being hard to control the narrative and narrowing down the target audience, technology and media have played a huge role in the way PR works in Pakistan.

Pakistan continues to face many challenges when it comes to the PR industry, like for instance getting the right kind of education at university levels, influencer marketing, and communication, negative PR catastrophes. Jazz Xlr8 Powered Startup DeafTawk Announces Global Expansion Plans

Islamabad – October 03, 2021: DeafTawk, a startup powered by Jazz xlr8, announced plans to expand its operations globally at a ceremony held to officiate the $250,000 grant it has received under the GSMA Innovation Fund for Assistive Tech. Using this grant, DeafTawk plans to scale up the application and increase its coverage, building the capacity of its interpreters, in order to reach both national and international audiences.

DeafTawk is an online sign language services provider enabling people with hearing impairments and was a part of the third Cohort at the NIC under the premium accelerator program, Jazz xlr8.

An MoU was also signed at the ceremony between DeafTawk and Jazz, Pakistan’s number one 4G operator and the largest internet and broadband service provider. Jazz will provide assistance to DeafTawk in developing strategies to further support the deaf community and assist with the startup’s expansion plans.

DeafTawk after successfully launching its operations in Pakistan and Singapore is expanding its reach to America, Europe and South Asia and will be officially launching in the coming weeks. The startup to date has 92,000+ beneficiaries, has created 1,100 direct jobs, and has a 25% month-on-month revenue growth.

“Recognition by the GSMA is a testament to the work DeafTawk has been doing and builds on Jazz xlr8’s reputation as a leading accelerator program in the country. These wins double our resolve to help young entrepreneurs take transformational ideas from start-up to scale-up,” stated Aamer Ejaz, Chief Digital and Strategy Officer at Jazz.

“With the support of our donors, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), we aspire to support great ideas and startups like DeafTawk. By helping a community to tackle their inabilities, we think DeafTawk has a potential to contribute exponentially towards digital inclusiveness,” said Bilal Qureshi – Manager, GSMA Innovation Fund.

DeafTawk CEO, Ali Shabbar, said, “When we pondered over the idea of DeafTawk, we instantly thought of empowerment through technology. And today, as the thought manifests itself into reality, we are glad to receive this grant and deeply honored by our partners and well-wishers for supporting our work, especially Jazz xlr8, which allowed us to transmit our raw idea into a proven business model. We aim to empower the ones who need a voice and bridge the gap with the GSMA.”

Ignite CEO Asim Shahryar, by mentioning the importance NICs hold in Pakistan stated that, “Ignite, through a strong network of NICs across the country, has been uplifting the startup ecosystem of Pakistan for the last five years. Our NICs have incubated more than 800 startups which have raised funding of more than $56 million so far. 2021 has been a remarkable year for Pakistani startups with an investment of more than $300 million so far, and Ignite’s forecast by December is of around $400 million.”

The GSMA Innovation Fund is funded by the FCDO and supported by the GSMA and its members. This fund is for startups aiming to address the varying needs of the differently-abled and overcoming barriers to digital inclusion. For this grant, DeafTawk was up against 350 other start-ups and SMEs from 31 nations. After a meticulous assessment process, four final grantees from Asia and Africa were chosen by an independent committee of specialists.

PM Imran Khan Initiates Kamyab Pakistan Program With High Hopes

[Update October 4, 2021]: In the Kamyab Program series, PM Imran Khan will be inaugurating the Kamyab Pakistan Programme (KPP) today. Through this program, 3.7 million families will become eligible to receive PKR 1.4 trillion.

Details of Kamyab Pakistan Program

There are five components of KPP. First, on the list, the Kamyab Kisan program will give interest-free loans to farmers. Kamyab Karobar, the second component will provide financing of PKR 500,000 to set up businesses. The third component is Sasta Ghar Scheme. In this scheme, the government will provide financing for the construction of housing units. Moreover, the Sehat Insaf Card will be linked with KPP as well.

PM Imran Khan & alleviating poverty

This program comes in line with the government’s initiative to alleviate poverty. The Finance Minister, Shaukat Tarin said that the necessary preparations for the ceremony have been successfully carried out.

The Finance Minister said that this initiative will, for the first time, connect lower-income groups with banks through microfinance institutions.

A Vital Program:

The Federal Minister for planning, development, reforms, and special initiatives, has revealed information about this program. Asad Umer has also said that this program will be used to provide loans to 100,000 more youngsters.

The minister also chaired a meeting in Islamabad to review the details of the program. It seems that about Rs.7 Billion loans have been distributed to nearly 6000 youngsters, so far. It has been sourced that six flagship programs are going to be launched under ‘Kamyab Jawan’

The Oxford Pakistan Programme (OPP) initiative aims to promote various Pakistan-related activities at the University of Oxford. Meanwhile, the program will include graduate scholarships for deserving students, visiting fellowships for Pakistani faculty members, and special lectures on Pakistan.

Scholarship Programs

The senior members of the university expressed their strong support for the new initiative in Pakistan. Adding that this initiative will help consolidate Pakistan-related academic activities and facilitate access to underrepresented communities.

Malala Yousufzai, being an attendee and a strong supporter of this initiative, announced a new scholarship. The scholarship will allow one Pakistani girl from an underdeveloped background to study at Oxford every year.

Abdul Ghani Dadabhoy, one of the strategic advisors of the OPP in Karachi as well as Director of Dadabhoy Group of Companies, pledging to sponsor an annual Sir Muhammad Iqbal Lecture on Eastern Philosophy.

A leading global intellectual will deliver the lecture at the University of Oxford every year. Meanwhile, he also announced support for a Visiting Scholars Programme.

It always comes as a hard blow to us when loved ones depart from this world. After all, death is part of the chain of life and it is something we must all go through. However, we are allowed to feel sad and pained when someone passes. The world felt broken when Edhi passed away. He was one of the greatest humans to have ever lived. Just like that, we have lost yet another gem of a human today. Umer Sharif, the legendary comedian and actor, has passed away at the age of 66.

It can be said, without a doubt, that Umer Sharif has had a major influence on society. He has not only shaped the way we look at television, but he has inspired many more to follow in his footsteps. He started off and rose as one of the greatest television personalities of all time. The individual is regarded as one of the greatest comedians of the Sub-Continent. We pray for him and hope that his family finds the strength to keep moving.

If you have not heard of this personality, you must go look him up. He has established the very essence of golden comedy in Pakistan. Whenever we think of the greatest comedians out there, Umer Sharif is definitely one of them. His passing gives us a great deal of sadness and discomfort. After all, many of us have grown up watching his shows. Does any of you remember the Sharif Show that he used to host?

Just inviting up celebrities, then dishing out some of his best jokes, that was the way of Umer Sharif. Between all the ongoings of a regular day, a lot of news is seen. Much of it can be deemed authentic but a huge chunk of it can be credited as fake. In recent news, the Indian media has been embarrassed and called out for reporting fake news. This news is related to what they had been saying about the Pakistan Air Force attack on Afghanistan. Due to this news, the Pakistan Air Force had to endure quite a lot of bad remarks and hate from many people. However, now it seems that the Indian media has been exposed and the news they reported has been deemed fake.

Pakistan and India have had heated relations since the start. While they do die down occasionally, there is always something that sparks them right back up. The Kashmir dispute is something that has been going on for quite a long while. So, deeming the Indian Media news fake makes us think about what else they are reporting. How much more of their news on Pakistan can be called untrue, fake or doctored? Let us dive into some of the details of this grand expose!

Indian Media In Regards To Pakistan

It seems that they had been talking about an alleged attack on Afghanistan’s Panjshir valley. According to their sources, F-16 fighter plans had launched an offensive in the region. Due to that, the PAF received quite a lot of backlash and even the international world had started to view Pakistan in another light. However, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudry, recently shared a video from his Twitter handle.

In that video, as you will see, a host from a French Tv show exposes the authenticity of the news that Indian Media reported. It seems that all they had been saying about Pakistan and the Panjshir, was completely and utterly fake. Not only this but India’s ‘Times Now’, ‘Bharat Now’ and ‘Zee India’ also supported this false news. The host of the show clarified that Indian media had certainly spread fake news, which brings their entire media authenticity into question. Spreading false news on an international is just playing dirty!

Reporting News

The French Program ‘Truth or fake’ has certainly helped a lot in restoring the credibility of Pakistan in the international world. What we see on Indian media is just another of one of many attempts to try and falsely sway public opinion about Pakistan. The truth comes out, one way or another. James Creedon also said that the role of Indian media is between political satire and stories.
