Pakistani Swimmer Lianna Swan Swims Her Way Through Rio Olympics 2016

Lianna-Swan-lead

Pakistan might have the least number of athletes in its squad competing at Rio Olympics 2016, in fact only seven who qualified either via continental quota or wild-card entry. But 19-year-old Lianna Catherine Swan is surely a surprise package in the Pakistani camp, who is swimming her way through Rio Olympics 2016.

Bahrain-born Lianna will be seen in action today in the 50m freestyle swimming competition with seven other swimmers and she has to leave behind a total of 91 swimmers vying to qualify for the semi-final stage.

International Swimming Federation (ISF) granted her a wild-card entry on the basis of her performance in the 16th World Aquatics Championship held at Kazan, Russia last year.

Lianna Swann.Brandsynario

The teenager Lianna has regional medals already to her credit with seven national records under her belt. The swimmer won gold and silver medals respectively in women’s 200m and 100m breaststroke category, representing Pakistan in South Asian Games (SAG) 2016, which were held in India this February.

Pakistan’s Judoka Shah Hussain Shah Defeated at Rio Olympics 2016

Lianna’s representation for Pakistan at the Olympics is an interesting story. She was born to a British father and a Pakistani mother in Awali city of Bahrain; she had a choice to play for either Pakistan or the Great Britain team.

She started swimming at the age of 12. Her family then moved to Dubai where her talent was spotted. Lianna decided to play for Pakistan and got overwhelming support from Pakistanis.

“It was difficult to choose in the beginning, but after discussing with the coach and my parents, I decide to go for Pakistan as I would get a lot more out of being a part of the Pakistan team, since there’s a lot more people trying for the Great Britain team. I’m very happy to represent Pakistan and hopefully I can go as far as I can with them. Opting for Pakistan opened up many opportunities for me that may have not been the case had I chosen for the Britain team.”

Lianna Swan-Brandsynario

But Rio Olympics is not the ultimate goal for the youngster as she intends to go a long way ahead.

“It’s been hard work, I haven’t got to where I want to be at all, but the people in Pakistan have always been there to support me. I have been to many international competitions for Pakistan, and it’s because of the country that I’m here today at the Olympics.”

Lianna wants to see the country, Pakistan growing to soaring heights. She said that it is encouraging to see a lot of families supporting girls participating in swimming but authorities must improve the facilities provided to them which are not enough to drive them towards excellence.

Maalik Movie Banned Internationally: Aashir Azeem Speaks Up

Maalik movie

Ashir Azeem’s Maalik has been labelled unfit for global release by the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage of Pakistan owed to the ‘controversial content’ in the movie. The institution also wrote a letter to the Ministry of Commerce asking them to do the same.

Maalik already suffered at the beginning of its release when the film was declared controversial and cinema houses, throughout the country, abruptly stopped showing it. The ban came into effect after almost 22 days  of its initial release.

Maalik movie

The reason cited was the Section 9 of the Motion Picture Ordinance 1979 which deemed the movie ban worthy.

On the other hand, some sources have been quoted as saying that no such correspondence has come to pass, as it’s only a spoken commitment to stop the film’s international release.

Maalik Pakistani Movie Box Office Report

Ashir Azeem who made the movie Maalik, however, took to the court filing petitions in Punjab High Court and Sindh High Court. He challenged the ban, stating that the movie does not contain any of the specified content.

“Being a responsible citizen of the country, I contacted the courts — which is my right. I was still waiting for their decision on the local ban when I received the new instructions,” said Azeem, when asked about the ban on exporting his film.

“I am surprised this is happening. Why am I being targeted alone? This has never happened with any other Pakistani film in our history. It feels as though I am the only one doing wrong in the country and everyone else is right.”

According to the CIE Country Director Uzma Yousuf Zaka, more students than ever before collected their CIE results this year, as entries for Cambridge qualifications have continued to grow in Pakistan and around the world.

For a country like Pakistan, where the vast majority is uneducated or only high school literates, this is a huge achievement.

However, this does allow us to debate whether the education in the country is as bad as it seems to be.

Over the past few years, more and more students have been appearing in the Cambridge IGCSE with an increase of 16 % in entries this year as compared to last year.

Barber Hygiene: A PSA by The Health Foundation

On 28th July, in association with World Hepatitis day – The Health Foundation launched a national campaign titled Barber Hygiene. The campaign serves as a Public Service Announcement which highlights the increasing risks of shaving with unhygienic and unsafe shaving products used at barber shops and men’s salons.

The aim is to raise awareness of adverse health effects that are prevalent with the use of contaminated razors, shining light on how barbers lack certain knowledge regarding the dangers of re-using shaving equipment.

The Health Foundation is focused entirely on Hepatitis prevention and control in Pakistan, where every 12th person is suffering from either Hepatitis B or C. Pakistan also ranks 2nd highest in world prevalence for Hepatitis B & C. The growing effort by THF is rooted in facts that highlight how Hepatitis is the 8th biggest cause for deaths globally, every 30 seconds someone dies from Hepatitis in the Asia Pacific region, and the death rate from Hepatitis is 3 times more the HIV/ AIDS.

Barber Hygiene

THF’s mission is to change public attitude via educating how everyday males easily neglect the common hazards of unclean shaving equipment. Using anti-bacterial solutions and changing blades does not guarantee removal of Hepatitis germs, resulting in a single drop of contaminated blood causing infection.  As local health institutions lack resources to cater for such issues, THF has taken the initiative to enforce an attitude of self-consciousness within Pakistani males so they can exercise caution when getting a shave at barbers and men’s salons.

The Health Foundation will be conducting public walks & seminars to educate, on a national scale, about the root causes and effects of Hepatitis. One of the key causes for Hepatitis infection is unsafe/ unscreened blood transfusion where the tiniest drop of contaminated blood can spread the disease.  Similar to the re-using of needles & syringes, unsafe barber shaving can also lead to Hepatitis transmission.

Pakistan To Import ‘Game-Changing’ Hepatitis-C Drug

This is where barbers, not knowing the real risks, re-use the same blades, razor, towel & brushes on multiple people. More importantly, the risk of blood borne transmission is amplified by the lack of relevant knowledge that barbers and their clients possess and this multiplies the risk of infection.

Part of the program is to ultimately lead to reducing and preventing the risks of Hepatitis via educating barbers and consumers of these subtle but hazardous factors, whilst enforcing the avoidance of re-using unsterilized/ unsafe shaving equipment on multiple clients. Self-shaving is also a major driver of this avoidance from Hepatitis risks, allowing Pakistani males to be in control of their shaving equipment.

About The Health Foundation

The Health Foundation is an organization focused on prevention of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C in Pakistan. The Health Foundation aims to create awareness and promote healthy practices for management of various diseases in the general public, with an initial emphasis on Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C. Their goal is to educate the general public regarding the manifestations of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and their mode of acquisition, transmission and ways of prevention. THF also provides free treatment for non-affording poor and marginalized population.

Sajal Ali & Anjum Shehzad Face Criticism At ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai’ Music Launch

Zindagi-kitni-haseen-hai-music-launch

The soundtrack for the highly anticipated romantic flick Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai, starring the most coveted duo of the Pakistani entertainment industry, Sajal Ali and Feroze Khan, was recently released at an extravagant music launch event. Making their debut to the big screen, the duo is quite popular for their sizzling on-screen chemistry.

The music launch was a happening event, buzzing with fervor and excitement in a hotel packed with enthusiasts and popular faces from the media. Even though the place was packed and the music received great response, there was definitely some drama that caught the eyes.

“The director of the movie Mr. Anjum Shehzad was attacked by journalists, making him visibly upset during the Q & A session.”

Zindagi Kitni haseen Hai

Watch for yourselves:

The journalists inquired about the box office failure of his movie Mah-i-Mir. He initially responded that the movie was not supposed to be a commercial success and that it was not meant for cinemas. To this, the journalists reported, “why was the movie shown in cinemas then?” He rebutted with a sarcastic remark, that the audience is just not intelligent enough to watch real cinema-like ‘Mah-i-Mir’.

One of the journalists said that ‘trailers often make even a bad movie look good’, hinting that ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai’ might not be as good as the trailer reflects. Mr. Anjum urged him to attend the premier of the movie and find out for himself.

The film’s soundtrack is slated to create a momentous buzz due to the inclusion of three superstar musical artists from both Pakistan and India who will be lending their voices to the film.

Since the reporters were constantly asking questions about Mah-i-Mir’s failure, the director annoyingly said that he will hold a separate press conference for Mah-i-Mir.

Sajal Ali was also criticized for showing up late at the event. She made comparisons between Pakistani and Indian films and highlighted that Pakistani movies need to improve.

Seems like she even compared herself to Indian actresses in terms of professionalism. She is quite the diva now!

Mustafa Zahid, lead singer of cult rock band Roxen and Bilal Saeed whose debut song ‘Baara Saal’ was a smash hit and who has worked closely with UK-based music producer Dr. Zeus lend their vocals from Pakistan. Indian artist Sukhwinder Singh, famous for popular ‘Dil Se’ song ‘Chaya Chaya ’ also sang in his mellifluous voice.

Three movie songs were performed live at the event, making it even more happening!

8 Types of Pakistanis You’ll See This Independence Day 14th August

Types-of-Patriot

With Independence Day 2016 just around the corner, it seems apt to count down all the different kind of ‘patriotic’ people we see this time of the year. We all have them in our social circle, from the most prominent Pakistan lover who blasts the age old ‘Milli Naghme’ aka patriotic songs in his car to the least bothered Pakistani who only puts up the mandatory Independence Day status because well… its Pakistan’s birthday. And in case you can’t find one, it just might be you!

Take a look below:

1. The Loud Pakistani

bike resize

This guy loves roaming around on his bike on Independence Day without a silencer, treating everyone to the painful noise of his motorbike. No need to look out for him. You’ll hear his bike from 2 streets away!

Dedicated to the Pakistanis who like to show their admiration to the struggles of our forefathers through their dismantled automobile parts, per say, an ironically loud ‘silencer’. This group of extraordinary men seem to think that people lose their audible senses on the big day.

2. The Flagged Pakistani

Speaking to Times of India, Shah Rukh Khan commented, “I told them I was a movie star and had recently visited the country for the shooting of my film. Nothing seemed to convince the immigration officer”.

Apparently, the immigration officers gave Shah Rukh Khan a hard time, even though he informed them he had visited U.S.A twice.

“There were other immigration officers who even vouched for me but this particular officer did not listen to anyone. I even told them I had an invitation from the South Asian community and was there to attend an event”, he told to ToI.
