Fashion Pakistan Week Summer/Spring 2019: Day Three Ends on a High Note!

On the third and final day, the line-up consisted of seven designers as the show opened with ‘Kaleidoscope’ by Nomi Ansari who brought out a brilliant take on antique bridal attire tailored for the modern day bride.

This was followed by ‘The Monsoon Bride by Huma Adnan, ‘All Day I Dream’ by Amir Adnan, ‘Euphoria’ by Saira*Shakira, ‘La Fee’ by Zainab Chottani and ‘Mayon Mehndi’ by Pink Tree Company, Spring/Summer Festive closed with Tena Durrani’s stunning bridal collection, ‘Nur’.

Nomi Ansari – Kaleidoscope

Nomi Ansari

Nomi’s collection brought an array of colorful, vibrant pieces that had a vivacious fusion of traditional Sindhi culture and mirror work with couture finishing. Using traditional techniques from different parts of Sindh, the collection consisted of pieces with heavy mirrorwork and detailed embroideries on vibrant attires; from lehnga cholis to tailed gowns, each had the finesse of couture finishing.

Colors that ruled the runway during the show were shocking pink, shades of red and blood maroon along with greens and bright yellows. His collection was an epitome of traditional royal embroideries and mesmerizing ornamentation, with the use of floral adornments, integrated with Asian tradition. Maya Ali was the showstopper for Nomi Ansari.

Huma Adnan – The Monsoon Bride

Huma Adnan

The Monsoon Bride celebrated monsoon weddings and the myriad of colors and moods the season brings with it. The refreshing designs paralleled with the freshness in the air that carries the blissful omen of rain and blossom. These dresses were for the happy souls who want to just let down their tresses and celebrate happiness with their loved ones. The lehengas and sarees showed off intricate embroidery in pearls, sequins, and beads.

The cheerful collection truly reflected the emotions of the bride – the outfits were made with the sole purpose of making the day unforgettable for her. The essence of The Monsoon Bride spoke to the modern woman who wants to dazzle when she dresses up but also be comfortable carrying off her ensemble.

The contemporary bride does not let anything come in her way of reveling in milestones and making each moment count and the collection made sure of that. Sarah Khan and Parishey Adnan walked the ramp for Huma Adnan as the showstoppers.

Amir Adnan – All Day I Dream

Amir Adnan

Amir Adnan’s collection explored the natural shades of the unconscious. The achiever, the alpha who stands by the principle “decide commit act succeed repeat.” But before any of that, the quintessential element binding together any person with a purpose is ‘the dream.’ The collection used a combination of unique cuts and draping fabrics, with earthy color tones to cope with the summer heat. The collection pieces also had a range of elements that are rarely seen in menswear, from tassels to detailed pearl-work, there was something for everyone. Azfar Rehman was the showstopper.

Saira*Shakira – Euphoria

Saira Shakira

An encounter between hues, textures, and movements – delved into Saira Shakira’s latest collection ‘Euphoria’. It was a collection that represented the intense feelings of wellbeing through intricate embellishments of motifs, sleek necklines, and unmatchable gold work artistry. Saira Shakira used rich fabrics like hand-woven nets, jamawar, pure silks, velvets, custom digital printed silks and organza on monochromes and elegant colors, making her ‘Euphoria’ collection, timeless and regal. The lavish yet summery signature designs dazzled on the runway and made for perfect Spring/Summer trends.

Zainab Chottani – La fée

La fée unveiled a feminine dreamy collection celebrating ingenious orthodox handcraft in traditional style. Her pieces redefined elegance with subtle flamboyance in pastel and sparkling rouge color palette and intricate blossomy floral designs. The collection encapsulates a breezy silhouette evoking traditional craftsmanship fused in the majestic ensemble.

With rouge elements and sparkly detailing, some of her ensembles like the fiery red traditional suit left everyone mesmerized. What took everyone by surprise was the impromptu concert Asim Azhar put together on the ramp with Hania Amir where he serenaded his way through to the end. Showstoppers for Zainab Chotani were Fatima Zara Malik, Hania Amir, and Asim Azhar.

Pink Tree Company – Mayon Mehendi

Pink Tree

The colors orange and marigold flower are often associated with spring weather and the exuberant mayon celebration. The collection was an ode to the mayon mehndi ceremony where the bride partakes in full all the traditional rituals and practices. The vibrant color palette was a treat to the eyes as models strutted down the runway in bright pops of color such as royal blue, olive green, shocking pink and orange. The dazzling ensembles were a refreshing addition to the yellow dresses one is used to seeing. Bold, beautiful colors, gold gota work, intricate details, and glamorous accessories were all the rage at the Pink Tree Company’s collection showcase. Aliya Iqbal and Sonya Hussayn were the showstoppers. Jewelry was by Sherezad Rahimtoola, gota jewelry was by Nino’s Creations and styling by Amal Qadri.

Tena Durrani – Nur’

Tina Durani

The grand finale of the third day was beautifully done by Tena Durrani. Nur’ a prelude to a season of joy, light, and color. And as always, the collection was an ode to confident, progressive women.

An avid believer in women who pursue joy and happiness and strive to live life to the fullest, Tena shed light to her belief through her collection which revealed gently pushed boundaries of the traditional bridal silhouettes and color themes.

Woven together with impeccable craftsmanship, the outfits seamlessly blended different genres of dramatic artworks and lush fabrics. From gold ensembles with delicate floral work to velvety ghararas and traditional bright red bridal ensembles, her collection left everyone awe-struck and wanting more.

iPhone 6 & 6 Plus to Officially be Cancelled by Apple?

Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

In a turn of events, The Economic Times has reported that technology titan Apple will cancel the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The report also states that the brand will also increase the current price-tags of their iPhones.

On the other hand, entry-level iPhones are comparatively cheaper to afford, which is why for most individuals they are the go-to ones.

This will leave the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus as the bottom rung and, in India, the prices will increase as well.

WhatsApp Is Banning Some Users, Here’s Why!

This decision will help Apple reinforce the brand’s ‘premiumness’ in the markets in India. Apple India shared that iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be 5,000 rupees more expensive than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but their prices will not increase.

The Economic Times also reported that Apple will pull iPhones from the shelves from any retailers smaller than 350-400 square feet in size in order to have bigger stores focus and push the more expensive variants.

This strategy is something very different than what we have seen Apple do with the Chinese markets. The brand has slashed their prices multiple times in order for the consumers to buy them.

There is uncertainty if this strategy in India will be of any help, increasing the price of their entry-level set will demotivate a consumer, probably not motivate one.

On the other hand, there is no official comment on the brand’s side yet.

Pakistani Government Website’s Security Compromised!

Pakistani website hacked

A Government of Pakistan’s website has found to be compromised by Trustwave’s SpiderLabs Research team.

The website tracking.dgip.gov.pk is a sub-domain of Directorate General of Immigration & Passport of the Pakistani government.

Reportedly, the site which is used as a tracking platform for passport applicants was compromised in order to deliver a  ScanBox framework payload.

The ScanBox framework is a self-contained JavaScript-based keylogger designed to record users’ keystrokes while they’re browsing a website.

Trustwave researchers noted that Scanbox also attempts to identify if the visitor has any of the 77 products (including security software, virtualization, and decompression tools) installed on the device, according to HackRead.

Trustwave’s SpiderLabs Research team that discovered this breach added:

It was then seen again in 2017 suspected to be used by the Stone Panda APT group, and once more in 2018 in connection with LuckyMouse. With every appearance, it seems to have evolved in terms of the kinds of information it gathers.

The Platform Also tried to detect whether the visitor has any of a list of 77 endpoint products installed, most of these are security products, with a few decompression and virtualization tools.

This is the same kind of attack that last week Bangladeshi Embassy in Cairo suffered.

It is unclear who is behind this attack as of yet. However, this is surely not the first time when Pakistan’s IT infrastructure was compromised.

Last year, the country was hit with waves of ATM frauds and scams and a lot of money was stolen from many individuals. Even their information was sold on the dark web.

This initiative builds upon Standard Chartered’s focus on increasing women’s access to entrepreneurial finance and supporting adolescent girls and women through capacity building. It encapsulates the essence of the Bank’s sustainability strategy of Futuremakers, enabling the next generation to learn, earn and grow.”

The launch of the programme in Pakistan follows a successful rollout of a similar initiative in the USA and Kenya by Standard Chartered.  The Bank first launched the programme to support women in technology in 2014 at the City College of New York where it created the Women Entrepreneurs Resource Centre. The US programme includes a dedicated workspace, mentorship, coursework, and access to an extensive network designed to support entrepreneurs navigating the challenges of starting a business.

The second programme was launched in Kenya in 2017 with iLab Africa (Strathmore University) to support the economic and social development of women in Africa through innovation or technology led entrepreneurship.

Pakistan is the third market selected by the Bank to launch the Women in Tech programme.

Social Media’s Worst Outage: Sources Reveal Possible Reasons Behind Blackout

Social Media Outage

Citizens around the globe had seemed to burst in panic as some of their favorite social media applications stopped working.

Many users complained that YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, Google Play and other Google Services as well as Facebook, Instagram and even WhatsApp were down.

Taking immediate note of the unexpected crisis, Google posted on its G Suite Status Dashboard mentioning that they are facing an issue and should be back up soon.

YouTube Fact-Check Feature for Sensitive Videos to be Rolled-Out Soon

The problem with Google Drive should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.

This blackout was faced in several different countries including Pakistan, the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, and more.

Instagram, Facebook also acknowledged that the issue was in their notice and that the team is working on resolving the problem at hand.

At the same time, Facebook clarified that the “issue is not related to a DDoS attack” approximately one hour after the blackout.

Even Oculus was also down…

Reason Behind the Unexpected Global Outage

As of now, there are different claims from different sources speculating of what could have possibly had happened.

According to TechCrunch, a technology firm has stated that the outage was caused by a possible border gateway protocol routing leak. Whereas another professor believes:

It is possible that a route leak could have caused/contributed to the outage event Facebook and its affiliated applications faced today. When routes are ‘leaked’ erroneously they can have a large impact to the negative on functions and availability of services, – Tulane University adjunct faculty member, Tom Thomas

On the other hand, The Register reported that a cloud monitoring outfit by the name of ThousandEyes said:

When investigating Facebook’s issues today, we’re not seeing any BGP changes that are affecting connectivity, packet loss or latency.

Since Facebook uses its own backbone network, it’s not clear as to how an external transit route issue would cause a disruption within the internal Facebook network.

If a route leak were affecting user access from the internet to the Facebook edge, then it would most likely manifest as paths changing, such as what happened when user access to Google [in November last year] was impacted by a route leak.

Our global vantage points were able to capture the path changes in that case, but we’re not seeing any evidence so far of that happening today.

It took Facebook longer to bounce back as compared to Google. But, the exact reason for the commotion is still unaware of.

Bahrain Visa Rules for Pakistanis Relaxed: Reports

Bahrain has relaxed its visa restrictions for Pakistanis who are wanting to enter the country according to Albawba (Arab website).

Previously, it was reported that many Pakistanis found it difficult to acquire the visa.

They had taken their concern to social media. At the time, Gulf Daily News quoted an official of a local company that they are facing complications with visa requests for Pakistanis at the Labor Market Regulatory Authority.

“NEW VISAS FOR PAKISTANIS HAVE BEEN PUT ON HOLD”

Pakistanis Temporarily Banned from Entering Bahrain: Reports

A ‘visa ban’ was placed in the middle of last year after Iranians traveled and tried to enter the country with forged Pakistani passports. However, now it seems that they have relaxed the rules once again.

There is speculation that Bahrain had relaxed its visa policy for Pakistani applicants last month, but there are no confirmations on this news. On the other hand, many individuals who are members of online forums had specially made the forum to discuss the matter.

“I spoke to Afzaal Mahmood, the Ambassador of Pakistan to Bahrain via LinkedIn,” member Update for Pakistan Passport Holders forum said.

He says that now the issue has been resolved and the unofficial ban has been removed, so I believe things should get back to normal.

Another user said her mother’s online visit visa application had been approved, after being rejected five times.

In 10 minutes visa got approved (following the latest application)

However, the forum moderator cautioned that some applicants could still face obstacles.

There is no issue on visas for blood relatives, whether the visitor is dependent. No issue on visas for people in Bahrain, i.e you cancel visa and apply for another type.

Employment visas (are) also relaxed, but it is case by case. Big companies face no issues, but some smaller ones may face issues.

Afterward, reportedly by Albawaba, Pakistanis entering Bahrain from Saudi Arabia via King Fahad Causeway are apparently facing extra immigration checks, including fingerprinting. However, those who have gone through the process are saying it was quite hassle-free.

In September 2018, it was reported by GDN that Pakistanis in Bahrain were being summoned to police stations for fingerprint verification. No further explanations were given as to why this was being done.

During the same month, the Bahrain police arrested 14 Iranians who had entered the country on forged Pakistani passports. In December, 7 were arrested in Balochistan, Pakistan for having fake Pakistani passports.

The Pakistan Embassy has not yet commented on the matter.

Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder Successfully Test Fires Long-Range Smart Missile

JF-17

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has successfully tested one of its popular fighter jets which goes by the name JF-17 Thunder.

Also described and codenamed ‘Smart Weapon’, the jet test-fired a missile which was proven to be successful.

The announcement of the JF-17 Thunder’s success testing by PAF comes after the sudden escalation tensions between neighboring countries India and Pakistan, which have seemed to slightly dip in the last couple of days.

An Indian Pilot was also captured, released, and returned home by Pakistan as a peace offer to prove to India that the country does not believe in war as the answer.

An official PAF statement says that the JF-17 multi-role fighter aircraft on Tuesday fired the new missile, which has “day-and-night capability to engage a variety of targets with pinpoint accuracy.”

Air Force chief Mujahid Anwar was quoted as saying that “Pakistan is a peace-loving nation but if subjected to aggression by an adversary, we will respond with full force.”

“Successful trial has provided JF-17 Thunder a very potent and assured day and night capability to engage a variety of targets with pinpoint accuracy,” the military’s public affairs wing said.

The JF-17 Thunder has been indigenously built by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra in collaboration with China.
