Imran Khan Expresses Disappointment Over Punjab Ministers’ Salary Raise

Prime Minister’s Startup Pakistan Program

Punjab Assembly passed a bill to increase salaries of its lawmakers, yesterday.

Now, Punjab’s chief minister’s salary is even higher than that of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

According to Dawn, the speaker’s salary has jumped from Rs37,000 to Rs200,000 per month. Deputy speaker would now get Rs185,000 instead of Rs35,000 and so would be cabinet members and advisors.

The members (MPAs) are now entitled to Rs80,000 per month rather than Rs18,000 and their utility bills entitlement has gone up to Rs200,000 instead of earlier Rs120,000.

Imran Khan in a tweet has expressed his disappointment over the passing of the bill.

He stated:

I am extremely disappointed by decision of Punjab Assembly to raise pays & privileges of MPAs, Ministers & esp CM. Once prosperity returns to Pak such a move cld be justified, but now, when we do not have resources to provide basic amenities to all our people, this is untenable

Following Khan, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry also criticized the provincial government and the chief minister for this move.

Standard Chartered

Standard Chartered Bank (Pakistan) Limited announces the launch of Women in Tech, a global programme aimed at supporting greater diversity in gender representation within technology-based entrepreneurship.

Partnering with INNOVentures and the Pakistan Innovation Foundation (PIF), Standard Chartered Women in Tech programme aims to promote the economic and social development of women in Pakistan through innovation or technology led entrepreneurship. This initiative is a global programme, Women in Tech, being launched in Pakistan.

The Bank will be focusing on capacity building for women-owned small enterprises. The Standard Chartered Women in Tech programme will target female-led entrepreneurial teams and provide them with training, mentorship and seed funding. There will be an open call for participation leading to a final selection of up to top 25 contestants with the most compelling ideas. At the end of the training period, up to five winners will be chosen and each winner will be awarded up to USD10,000 to invest in their business.

The event included an all-women discussion panel that talked about women entrepreneurs; the cost of technology in running the business and the digital divide. The panel discussion was led by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Pakistani development economist, diplomat and intellectual, Jehan Ara, President of the Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT, Shandana Gulzar, Parliamentary Secretary at Ministry of Commerce, Government of Pakistan, PTI’s Member of the National Assembly and Rabia Nizami, PTI’s Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA), with Saad Amanullah, Chairman Pakistan Innovation Foundation (PIF), as the moderator. The panel talked about how it is important for women to access more hands-on training, mentoring, long-term engagement to help businesses grow, while funding is important, it is not enough.

Commenting on this launch Mr. Shazad Dada, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered said, “I am proud to launch Women in tech in Pakistan today. We are optimistic that this programme will act as a great platform of support for aspiring women entrepreneurs and business owners in Pakistan and help them realize their true potential. It will help identify, grow and bring to the market unique business ideas, while at the same time celebrating women in Pakistan.

This initiative builds upon Standard Chartered’s focus on increasing women’s access to entrepreneurial finance and supporting adolescent girls and women through capacity building. It encapsulates the essence of the Bank’s sustainability strategy of Futuremakers, enabling the next generation to learn, earn and grow.”

The launch of the programme in Pakistan follows a successful rollout of a similar initiative in the USA and Kenya by Standard Chartered.  The Bank first launched the programme to support women in technology in 2014 at the City College of New York where it created the Women Entrepreneurs Resource Centre. The US programme includes a dedicated workspace, mentorship, coursework, and access to an extensive network designed to support entrepreneurs navigating the challenges of starting a business.

The second programme was launched in Kenya in 2017 with iLab Africa (Strathmore University) to support the economic and social development of women in Africa through innovation or technology led entrepreneurship.

Pakistan is the third market selected by the Bank to launch the Women in Tech programme.

Social Media’s Worst Outage: Sources Reveal Possible Reasons Behind Blackout

Social Media Outage

Citizens around the globe had seemed to burst in panic as some of their favorite social media applications stopped working.

Many users complained that YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, Google Play and other Google Services as well as Facebook, Instagram and even WhatsApp were down.

Taking immediate note of the unexpected crisis, Google posted on its G Suite Status Dashboard mentioning that they are facing an issue and should be back up soon.

YouTube Fact-Check Feature for Sensitive Videos to be Rolled-Out Soon

The problem with Google Drive should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.

This blackout was faced in several different countries including Pakistan, the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, and more.

Instagram, Facebook also acknowledged that the issue was in their notice and that the team is working on resolving the problem at hand.

At the same time, Facebook clarified that the “issue is not related to a DDoS attack” approximately one hour after the blackout.

Even Oculus was also down…

Reason Behind the Unexpected Global Outage

As of now, there are different claims from different sources speculating of what could have possibly had happened.

According to TechCrunch, a technology firm has stated that the outage was caused by a possible border gateway protocol routing leak. Whereas another professor believes:

It is possible that a route leak could have caused/contributed to the outage event Facebook and its affiliated applications faced today. When routes are ‘leaked’ erroneously they can have a large impact to the negative on functions and availability of services, – Tulane University adjunct faculty member, Tom Thomas

On the other hand, The Register reported that a cloud monitoring outfit by the name of ThousandEyes said:

When investigating Facebook’s issues today, we’re not seeing any BGP changes that are affecting connectivity, packet loss or latency.

Since Facebook uses its own backbone network, it’s not clear as to how an external transit route issue would cause a disruption within the internal Facebook network.

If a route leak were affecting user access from the internet to the Facebook edge, then it would most likely manifest as paths changing, such as what happened when user access to Google [in November last year] was impacted by a route leak.

Our global vantage points were able to capture the path changes in that case, but we’re not seeing any evidence so far of that happening today.

It took Facebook longer to bounce back as compared to Google. But, the exact reason for the commotion is still unaware of.

Bahrain Visa Rules for Pakistanis Relaxed: Reports

Bahrain has relaxed its visa restrictions for Pakistanis who are wanting to enter the country according to Albawba (Arab website).

Previously, it was reported that many Pakistanis found it difficult to acquire the visa.

They had taken their concern to social media. At the time, Gulf Daily News quoted an official of a local company that they are facing complications with visa requests for Pakistanis at the Labor Market Regulatory Authority.

“NEW VISAS FOR PAKISTANIS HAVE BEEN PUT ON HOLD”

Pakistanis Temporarily Banned from Entering Bahrain: Reports

A ‘visa ban’ was placed in the middle of last year after Iranians traveled and tried to enter the country with forged Pakistani passports. However, now it seems that they have relaxed the rules once again.

There is speculation that Bahrain had relaxed its visa policy for Pakistani applicants last month, but there are no confirmations on this news. On the other hand, many individuals who are members of online forums had specially made the forum to discuss the matter.

“I spoke to Afzaal Mahmood, the Ambassador of Pakistan to Bahrain via LinkedIn,” member Update for Pakistan Passport Holders forum said.

He says that now the issue has been resolved and the unofficial ban has been removed, so I believe things should get back to normal.

Another user said her mother’s online visit visa application had been approved, after being rejected five times.

In 10 minutes visa got approved (following the latest application)

However, the forum moderator cautioned that some applicants could still face obstacles.

There is no issue on visas for blood relatives, whether the visitor is dependent. No issue on visas for people in Bahrain, i.e you cancel visa and apply for another type.

Employment visas (are) also relaxed, but it is case by case. Big companies face no issues, but some smaller ones may face issues.

Afterward, reportedly by Albawaba, Pakistanis entering Bahrain from Saudi Arabia via King Fahad Causeway are apparently facing extra immigration checks, including fingerprinting. However, those who have gone through the process are saying it was quite hassle-free.

In September 2018, it was reported by GDN that Pakistanis in Bahrain were being summoned to police stations for fingerprint verification. No further explanations were given as to why this was being done.

During the same month, the Bahrain police arrested 14 Iranians who had entered the country on forged Pakistani passports. In December, 7 were arrested in Balochistan, Pakistan for having fake Pakistani passports.

The Pakistan Embassy has not yet commented on the matter.

Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder Successfully Test Fires Long-Range Smart Missile

JF-17

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has successfully tested one of its popular fighter jets which goes by the name JF-17 Thunder.

Also described and codenamed ‘Smart Weapon’, the jet test-fired a missile which was proven to be successful.

The announcement of the JF-17 Thunder’s success testing by PAF comes after the sudden escalation tensions between neighboring countries India and Pakistan, which have seemed to slightly dip in the last couple of days.

An Indian Pilot was also captured, released, and returned home by Pakistan as a peace offer to prove to India that the country does not believe in war as the answer.

An official PAF statement says that the JF-17 multi-role fighter aircraft on Tuesday fired the new missile, which has “day-and-night capability to engage a variety of targets with pinpoint accuracy.”

Air Force chief Mujahid Anwar was quoted as saying that “Pakistan is a peace-loving nation but if subjected to aggression by an adversary, we will respond with full force.”

“Successful trial has provided JF-17 Thunder a very potent and assured day and night capability to engage a variety of targets with pinpoint accuracy,” the military’s public affairs wing said.

The JF-17 Thunder has been indigenously built by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra in collaboration with China.

Apple AirPods ‘Can Pose Cancer Risks’ According to 250 Scientists!

Apple AirPods

Apple AirPods is one of the brand’s most popular accessories.

However, 250 scientists from over 40 countries have signed a petition with the World Health Organization and the United Nations to warn individuals about the dangerous side effects of radiation.

According to scientists, Apple AirPods can “pose cancer risks”. This is because the device emits radiofrequency radiation, which is used in WiFi, cellular data and Bluetooth. Furthermore, the ear canal is quite fragile and is exposed to the waves.

The jury is still inquiring if the device can cause cancer or not before a further decision is made.

Facebook ‘Stablecoin’ to Replace Visa & MasterCard?

In 2018, Apple successfully sold 28 million pairs of the AirPods. The year before, it sold 16 million pairs in total. Even though users are loving the design, the wireless body could be pumping more than beats into wearers’ heads.

High amounts of radiation can cause:

  • vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea
  • loss of appetite
  • malaise, or feeling unwell
  • headache
  • rapid heartbeat

Symptoms depend on the dose, and whether it is a single dose or repeated.

A dose of as low as 30 rads can lead to:

  • loss of white blood cells
  • nausea and vomiting
  • headaches

A dose of 300 rads dose may result in:

  • temporary hair loss
  • damage to nerve cells
  • damage to the cells that line the digestive tract

“The various agencies setting safety standards have failed to impose sufficient guidelines to protect the general public, particularly children who are more vulnerable to the effects of EMF,” the scientists wrote.

“By not taking action, the WHO is failing to fulfill its role as the preeminent international public health agency.”

Mard March in Response to Aurat March 2019 Creates Uproar on Social Media

mard march

Aurat March 2019 took place on the 8th of March in both Karachi and Lahore. It highlighted important issues like early marriages, dowry, honour killings, domestic violence and sexual abuse that women face in the society.

Even men did not shy away from participating in the rally and played their part to defy stereotypes and to seek an end to patriarchy.

However, while the movement left many inspired, the Aurat March also became a controversial topic of discussion on social media. Various influential personalities and a few men ridiculed the idea.

So much so, a group of defensive individuals have kickstarted an insensitive campaign called ‘Mard March’ as a response to Aurat March.

Similar to women carrying placards in the gathering, these men are posing with messages, majority of them being sexist in nature.

ICC Spokesperson had also responded to Team India donning the hats against Australia. They said:

The BCCI sought permission from the ICC to wear the caps as part of a fundraising drive and in memory of fallen soldiers (in Pulwama attack), which was granted.

While Pakistan Cricket Board was unhappy with the display and wrote a strong letter to ICC in response.

“There’s absolutely no misunderstanding in the ICC about our position,” PCB boss Ehsan Mani said late on Sunday in Karachi.

We believe that cricket and sports should not be used for politics and we have said this very clearly. Their [India’s] credibility in the cricketing world has gone down very badly. – PCB’s lETTER TO icc

In the past, ICC has taken action against players like Moeen Ali and Imran Tahir over showing sentiments during matches.

Moeen was banned five years ago for donning an armband which showed ‘Save Gaza’ and ‘Free Palestine’ in a match against India. Tahir was reprimanded for the displaying of Junaid Jamshed’s image under his national jersey against Sr Lanka in 2009.

“You have two examples from the past already, where both Imran Tahir and Moeen Ali were sanctioned for something similar,” Mani said. “The ICC had taken strong action against them and we have sought similar action against India. The permission they took was for a different purpose but they acted differently.”
