Just a few days ago, it was announced that Karachiite will have to face gas load-shedding. Once the news was covered, officials immediately jumped forward to refute the claims, regarding the news as a rumor. According to them, there was going to be no set schedule per se to navigate the gas shortage. But the schedule exists and it has become annoying for the citizens.

The issues

“What chai? We get home from work and there is no gas,” A Karachiite lamented.

They further added, “In fact, we have to cook food beforehand and tea? Well, we make it and keep it in a thermos.”

It seems that the urban citizens are getting a taste of life in the countryside. Given the routine works differently for urban and rural, the schedule can surely not sit well with Karachiites most of whom are working remotely for foreign companies with different daily schedules. Their work begins in the evening and goes up until morning. Most urban citizens are night owls who like to cook up midnight snacks.

That is all gone because there is just no gas after 7 pm. Cooking is a separate issue but even the bathing schedule gets affected. With no heated water available, thanks to unoperational geysers, people can’t take baths at night anymore.

The gas schedule is, hence, directing Karachiites’ life schedule.

How to navigate gas shortage?

The problem exists for sure. Whomever we choose to blame, the problem will not magically disappear. That said, is it okay for one or two areas to be this afflicted? Is it okay for a proportion of the population to be affected by the gas shortage? Maybe, if the burden was shared amongst a number slightly less than 20 million population, the burden would not seem as great.

Instead of load shedding that encompasses most people’s teatime and dinner time of a few areas, the load could be shared equally. This way, instead of an 8 to 10-hour load shedding, the time would be reduced to 1 to 2 hours. The gas shortage might not be resolved but it can be managed effectively. Of course, this is until the people in power figure out a more permanent solution to the problem.

Maybe it is at the time they are trying to figure out a solution that they realized it is high time to shift to gas alternatives. But it will take time and until the solutions are in place, just maybe authorities could give us some attention.

2. Checking Tyre Quality

You may have had to drive over uneven terrain or rough ground during the week. This can be common for driving cars in certain areas of Karachi. At times, there can be damage to the tyres that are not apparent but can be detected. Every week, make sure that your tyres have not suffered any long-term damage or miniature punctures that can be a nuisance in the future.

3. Checking Car Tyre Pressure

This is yet another parameter of the tyres that must be kept in perspective. No matter how much you have driven your car, make sure to check the tyre pressure, at least once a week. Even a car standing for days, not driven much, can cause the tyres to deflate. The ideal tire pressure is 30psi. Higher psi can cause tyres to burst on extremely sunny days. Similarly, an underpressure tyre causes more friction on the road, reducing fuel average.

4. Cleaning Windshield Wipers

There is dew on the car windshields every morning now. It is important to keep your wiper blades clean so that you have a clear view. Even in sunny weather, keep your wiper blades clean of dust and rust, so they may work when they are needed. You can check these weekly, but they can be checked bi-weekly too.

5. Car Exhaust

Over time, the car exhaust can develop holes or leaks in it. If there is a hole there, the exhaust is going to sound louder than usual, and much rougher. Did You Know The Real Story Behind Lifebuoy’s Red Color?

With blue packaging handwash and green packaging shampoos, the new generation will probably not recall the signature red soap of Lifebuoy. But the Millenials and the older generation will probably be pushed into nostalgia reminiscing the old shape and texture. Before they introduced shampoos and handwashes, it was all soaps and that too, only red.

Thinking about it in hindsight, it does seem strange, the red color. I bet though that you would not the real story, the origins of this red colour. And if you did, well you are more well-read than me because I got to know about it only today.

Backstory of Lifebuoy

The story basically is that the product was initially created for washing floors and clothes. Interesting, right?

It is the story of two brothers Willian and James Lever. They wanted to create soaps from palm and vegetable oil. For this purpose, they set up a factory in England and created Sunlight soap. The target audience would use it for household cleaning. Come 1894, the brothers launched Lifebuoy soap that featured phenol/carbolic acid. It was this acid that gave the soap its distinctive red colour.

Up until then, medical practitioners had used carbolic acid for disinfecting purposes. Since people had become accustomed to associating the smell of carbolic acid with clinics and hospitals, this was why the soap came off as having a strong medicinal scent. But people found it bearable for household cleaning. Given its affordability, the brothers also launched a toilet bar with the same composition in 1933.

It was way later that the company began experimenting with smells. When they tackled smell, they also were able to experiment with color because why stick with the carbolic red?

Reading up on carbolic acid, it is said to kill germs. That said, it is so strong that people use it as snake poison as well. Considering the Lever brothers were producing this in the late 1800s, one wonders how safe it could be. The fact that it became a household name should answer that question though.

Later, Unilever acquired Lifebuoy. And now, you see so many variants of the soap, the handwash, the shampoos, and whatnot.

While you digest this information, we will leave you with yet another huge piece of information!

The little-known fact is that one of the Lever brothers, James, had Darcy as his middle name. Jane Austen, anyone?

6 Pakistani Actors Who Are Miserably Failing At Comedy

We have a number of Pakistani actors in our entertainment industry and most of them are good at what they do. But here is the thing; we have a few tropes that we keep on repeating in our dramas, for instance, saas evil bahu mazloom or a man’s two marriages. So if one actor performs well in two dramas we believe them to be great, but they performed really the same thing in both the projects.

The industry gets the chance to try other tropes during Ramadan, with Ramadan special comedy dramas. The way the cast is finalized most probably is not through auditions but through who has the most following or how many projects they have performed in. And this is why we get to see that a few of these actors are not that good when it comes to comedy.

1. Mira Sethi

Seeing Mira in her show talking in a very sophisticated manner has crafted an image of hers. Gul Apa from Chupke Chupke shatters that image. In the beginning, it was a fresh take but as we move onto further episodes we realize that she may be overdoing the comedy element.

Superb actor in other genres, Farhan is not that great when it comes to comedy. His recent project is Chupke Chupke where he has to play a miserly businessman. He looks too stiff for the role.

Seen as Nazakat Ali in Suno Chanda, Sohail Sameer played the role of jiya’s father. How lively and great Iqra Aziz was when she was Jia, Sohail could not match upto her.

4. Alizey Shah

Alizey Shah achieved the heights of fame quite quickly. And its probably because of that that she got caster in Tanaa Baana. Looking at her performance, it is not something to that you would want to see every day.

5. Wahaj Ali

Every house has their own comedian. Wahaj plays that character well in serious dramas. But having seen him perform in Ishq Jalebi, it turns out he cannot play a character in comedy dramas.

6. Amna Ilyas

Amna is trying to delve into comedy. Her parody of Ayeza Khan’s TVC was certainly hilarious but that had made her assume she is good at being the joke cracker. Her insta posts are all proofs of that. Someone needs to tell her, she is not that good at doing comedy.

These are just a few Pakistani actors who we think are not good comedy actors but that doesn’t mean they are not good at serious acting as well. Some of them are fabulous in the tropes they excel at. But then, they should stick to what they are good at.

International driving licenses can make your life a living paradise if you’re planning to go abroad. You won’t have to struggle in public transport or have to spend heavy bucks to rent a driver. If you’re someone looking to make life easier abroad, here’s how to get one:

Some Things You Need Prior

It is important for you to know that as an applicant you need to have a valid national driving license issued locally. Doing this will also ensure you get yours immediately as there is no wait.

Why You Should Get One

Getting one can also serve as an identification card abroad in case you lose your ID card. However, note that it is only for temporary purposes.

Punjab

To get an international driving license in Punjab, the Rasta app is recommended. The app has been developed by the Punjab IT Board. You can get an appointment on it and it is available for iOS and Windows on the App store.

Here’s what you didn’t know: the app can also be used for booking appointments for other license things. For instance, for applying for a learner’s driving permit or even for the issuance of a national or international driving license.

The Application Requirements

You will get an application and will have to fill out and attach it with the relevant documents:

Two attested passport-sized photographs.
One attested photocopy of a valid CNIC.
A photocopy of your passport.
One photocopy of your valid national driving license.
Medical certificate (for age 50 and above).
A Rs. 66 ticket obtained from the District Court.
A fee voucher of Rs. 450 voucher to be paid at a Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Branch.

Islamabad

People in Islamabad can visit the Citizen Facilitation Center, G-11/4 for an international driving license. The normal procedure costs roughly around Rs. 1050. Moreover, it takes 7 days on average. If you’d like it urgently, it will take 24 hours and the fee will be Rs. 2050.

These are the documents you will need:

Copy of a valid driving license issued by Islamabad Traffic Police.
Two Passport-Sized Photographs.
One photocopy of a valid passport along with a valid visa.
One photocopy of your CNIC.
Residential proof in Islamabad.
Driving stamp of Rs. 30 by Post Office.
Medical certificate (if applicable, for age 50 and above).

For Peshawar, one would have to visit Room No. 11, Second Floor, Tasneem Plaza along with all the relevant documents.

When you are tired, there are things that you should avoid. Doing important office work or financial related work is as big a NO as driving is in that situation. However, there are some other smaller activities that you should beware because they can have bad consequences for you. The following are five don’ts for when you are tired or sleep-deprived.

1. Don’t exercise full force

Exercising with full force is a bad idea. When you are already tired, but you think you should do your entire routine, it’s not helpful. And full force exercise can include a run around the neighborhood or climbing stairs. A trainer suggests that when you are tired, it is better to focus on light cardio. The justification is that full force exercise would be a waste of time because you will not have the energy to complete the routine. Moreover, there is a higher probability of injuring yourself when you are tired because you will not be focussed on your body entirely. So don’t exercise full force.

Do’s: Try walking, elliptical, or biking.

2. Don’t pick a fight

Be it an interaction with a colleague, a friend, or a partner, a mild issue can become a heated argument, and you will face escalated consequences. A study by Harvard Medical suggests that when one is sleep deprived, it is harder to control emotions. Another research suggests that sleep-deprived individuals cannot accurately read others’ feelings as well. So basically, the brain is not able to process the individual’s emotions as well as the opponents.

Do’s: fight when fully awake! Okay, maybe not fight but process life issues when you are fully awake.

3. Don’t take a nap

The famous expression goes like, ‘Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.’ This expression has truth to it. So if you are exhausted, and you decide to nap, the chances are that you will fall asleep instead of napping, and that would have adverse effects on your night sleep, which is very important for you. So AVOID napping

Do’s: If you have to nap, then do it the right way. The right duration of nap is 20 minutes to 30 minutes.

4. Don’t consume caffeine

Work is hard, and you feel like caffeine is your only best friend. But that is not the case. You think that your headaches will go away and you will feel refreshed by drinking coffee. However, that is only the adrenaline rush. Once that wears off, you will feel sluggish. And not just that, the caffeine in your system will also affect your night sleep.

Do’s: stop consuming caffeine after 1 p.m. Sap it with a natural energy boost such as a walk, an apple, or a glass of water.

5. Don’t use social media

If it’s not the time for night sleep, and you think you could spend that time scrolling through social media, reject that idea. There are two reasons for that. First of all, the light-emitting from your phone hurts your sleep cycle. And secondly, scrolling through Facebook or Instagram gets addictive, and you might lose the sense of time and spend hours on social media instead of minutes.

Do’s: Read a book.

These five don’ts are simple tools to ensure a healthy life, but the best among all will be to not compromise on your routine that will lead you towards becoming sleep deprived.

Imagine you can’t find your iPhone. You tried to call that number using your spouse’s phone, but it didn’t help. To make matters worse, the iPhone battery is dead. However, now with a recent update to the Find My app, you can find your device even when it’s turned off or the battery is dead.

Find My Device

If you have a newer iPhone, I have great news. A recent Find My app update lets you locate an iPhone even if it’s powered off or has a dead battery. Note: This works for the iPhone 11 and newer, including all iPhone 11, 12, and 13 models running iOS 15.

How To Use The Application

First, make sure Find My is enabled and check your settings. Here’s how:

On your iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Find My. If you’re asked to sign in, enter your Apple ID.
Tap Find My iPhone, then slide the toggle next to Find My iPhone to the right to enable it. (This should be enabled by default). With this feature enabled, you can find, lock, and erase your iPhone and its supported accessories. You cannot erase and reactivate the device without using a password.

Find My network: If your device is offline (not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular), Find My can locate it using the Find My network. On a supported iPhone with iOS 15 or later, turning on the Find My network allows you to locate the device for up to 24 hours after it’s turned off.
Send Last Location: If your device’s battery charge level becomes critically low, its location is sent to Apple automatically.

How to use Find My

Now that Find My is set up, you have a few options to use it should your phone go missing.

Have an Apple Watch? You have a simple method. Swipe up on the screen. Once your watch is open, tap on the phone icon with sound waves. This tap will force your iPhone to emit a noise even if it’s on silent.

If you have an iPad or MacBook, use the Find My app. You can use it to track your phone and emit sound, just like with an Apple Watch. See full steps to track from a Mac here. Here’s how to track your phone from an iPad.

Don’t worry if your iPhone is your only Apple device. You can use your web browser.

Log in to iCloud.com. Locate the Find iPhone feature. Once you’ve selected Find iPhone, sign in again. Click on All Devices to locate the phone you’re looking for. Select the phone you’ve lost and select Play Sound. You can also view your misplaced phone on a map.

What Is The Campaign About?

Dove is calling this campaign the “self-esteem project”. This is because it is investigating how social media impacts our self-esteem, through the presentation of toxic beauty advice. Young girls are specially targeted to be told they are not enough. They need botox! They need fillers! More beauty treatments are needed and then all of that is a slippery slope.

Calling In Mothers And Girls

They called in mothers with their girls to first see their relationship. What do the moms think of social media? Many of them said that they know it was bad but they also know social media helps their girls. However, Dove used highly special face-mapping technology to put the mom’s faces onto people who give toxic beauty advice.

Dove showed the moms and the girls the videos of the mom saying “maybe Botox wouldn’t be so bad for you.” These really hit the nerve. Moms were shocked to learn that this is what their daughters hear all the time and have grown up with. The daughters all said they know about it.

The Solution?

This was an incredibly powerful and much-needed campaign by Dove. Young girls are being looked at as consumers of beauty products a result of which their self-esteem is being ruined. However, this campaign by Dove invites attention to what they are experiencing on social media. Most importantly, it keeps mothers there so that these young girls have their own anchors at home to keep them safe.

After everything was seen ad heard, mothers were beyond emotional. They were hurting knowing that this is what their girls feel or are told. They, then, said we can’t stop this on social media but we can talk to them about it. A young girl who then says, sitting beside her mother, that my mama always told me I was perfect is the most endearing touch.

Federal Shariat Court Ruled In The Favor Of Interest-Free Banking

On Thursday, the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) declared the prevailing interest-based banking system against the Sharia law. The court directed the government to replace it with an interest-free system by the end of 2027.

The verdict was announced in a long-pending case on Riba (interest). The court directed the government to facilitate all loans under an interest-free system. The FSC gave its verdict after the supreme court had referred the case back to the court in 2002. Followed by the appeals against the decision of the FSC.

The Ruling Of The Case

In its long-awaited verdict, the court ruled that the elimination of interest was a religious and legal obligation. Since the parliament had already agreed to make Sharia-compliant laws.

In the written judgment, the bench said the prohibition of Riba is the cornerstone of the Islamic economic system.

“We have decided that every loan which extracts any additional amount upon the principal from the debtor is Riba, hence, any transaction that contains Riba even at the slightest level falls within the category of Riba thus prohibited. Furthermore, all the prevailing forms of interest, either in the banking transactions or in private transactions fall within the definition of Riba, according to the verdict.”

“All laws and regulations that facilitate interest are considered illegal and such laws should be abolished from June 1, 2022.” Further adding.

The court further directed the government to take internal and external loans under an interest-free system and added that an interest-free system. Citing that it would be more beneficial. However, it acknowledged that the transition towards an Islamic system would take time but the bank’s deposit “could be cleared of riba immediately.”

Response To The Ruling

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail took to twitter to share his thoughts,

“We welcome the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) decision in the Riba case. The government and SBP will carefully study this important decision and then seek guidance and clarification from the FSC about the process, steps, and time frame to implement this decision.”

Meanwhile, the federal government had argued that the interest-based banking system could not be eradicated as it would damage the already fragile economy. They mentioned that they have supported a parallel interest-free banking system already functioning in Pakistan.
