Cafe Soul’s Cannoli became the center of a scandal a few days ago. It started with the owners of Cannoli making a video that insulted their manager’s English language skills. The video made rounds on the internet, but not for the reasons intended. They must have meant to show how their cafe provides top-notch service. But they equated top-notch to spoken English. And that was caught by the audience all over Pakistan.

The best part about this was the realization of Pakistanis that judging someone for spoken English comes from our colonial past. More importantly, they could read between the lines when a supposed apology by the cafe surfaced.

Anyway, once the backlash continued so much that people even held an Urdu mushaira outside Cannoli out of spite, they decided to change their approach.

Changing names

They put up on their social media pages how they respect Urdu so much that they have converted their cafe’s name to Urdu script.

What’s sad, though, is that they are changing tactics but not doing what they should have done long ago; sincerely apologized. Moreover, changing the script to another language does not show respect, if only it shows more disrespect. I mean, tell me, if the word has origins based in Italy, how is writing it in Urdu, appreciates the language.

Reactions on Social Media

With almost three thousand comments and shares, people saw through this weak attempt at salvaging the reputation. They tried telling the cafe owners that it was not the language they were called out for, rather the lack of manners.

Hilariously, some comments tried shifting their attention to if they were planning to convert their introduction to Urdu, they should have done it right; reference to the words ‘established,’ ‘soul,’ and ‘by’ as well.

Some also tried appreciating the effort. They understood that the brand is trying to recover from what they did.

Stupid or not, if the brand suffers a loss, we should know that the employees will also suffer. This could be in the shape of employee layoffs or salary cuts. And considering the world is still recovering from covid, these two options may not be in their favor. So let’s try to be better, give them leeway. On the other hand, the cafe too should try at being better at their apology.

WHO Puts Madina Among World’s Healthiest Cities!

It is extremely important to make sure our world survives. Over the years and decades, many calamities have started to affect mother Earth. Where the rainforests used to stand with lush, now they are starting to weaken. Some species of animals that were vibrant decades ago, are now endangered or extinct. Can any of you even remember a time when pandas were not endangered?

In China, it is considered a state of global celebration when a panda is born. Of course, in the midst of a pandemic, we have to take care of our health too. It would not be a good sense of preservation if we did not take care of our health. To keep track of the world’s health, the WHO once inititated a program where it listed the world’s healthiest cities. WHO has just included Madina as one of the worlds healthiest cities!

Madina Has A History:

As we all know, this city is considered as one of the holiest cities of the world. It certainly holds a rich history and is wrought with tales of Islamic history. It is the city where the Holy Prophet (PBUH) migrated to after the persecutions of Muslims in Makkah got too much. Apart from this, there are wars that have been fought on the outskirts of Madnina.

Madina is also home to one of the most beautiful Masjids of all time. It is known as Masjid e Nabwi. When one travels to Saudi Arabia, visiting Madina is at the top of their agenda, right after Makkah. The city has a population of over 2 million and has been the subject of a pandemic, like every other city. However, they have managed to remain healthy all this time!

One Of World’s Healthiest:

In a recent survey, professionals from WHO visited the city. After much consideration, they came to a result. Madina is being considered as the first city with a population over 2 million, to be seen under this program. After the survey, the WHO team also stated that the city sits well within Global standards. Additionally, they are progressing forward quite well, in terms of citizen betterment.

According to sources and records, a total of 22 government, community, charity and volunteer agencies have helped prepare this accredition. Yes, the city has recieved an award and a praise of sorts. It is one healthy city and worthy of a mention among other healthy ones.

After everything, especially the pandemic, we must remember to take care of ourselves. It is not just the responsibility of the citizen, but the government, to make sure the environment stays healthy. It come down to us how we can take care of our city, in terms of pollution as well as a safe environment.

There have been numerous developments in the automotive industry after many years. Pakistan used to be lagging slightly behind when it came to vehicles. BAIC is a brand that went silent when the world got hit by a pandemic. Now, Changan is yet another brand that has been launched here. Due to their entry, something had happened.

Changan recently released a vehicle by the name of Alsvin. It got so popular, due to its specs and price, that it was sold fast. It was in high demand and was booked at lightning speed. This, in turn, raised a lot of eyebrows overseas. They thought that if a vehicle is so popular here, why not move more of them in the country?

Additionally, right-hand drive vehicles are the most used in Pakistan. The Chinese automotive industry sees this as an opportunity to enter the country. They can have a gateway towards the South Asian region due to this very reason. So, apart from India, they are now turning their gaze towards Pakistan too.

Both of these news come in the form of a blessing for us. 2021 is turning out to be a good year for Automotives. Pakistan is making its way on the industrial map faster than anything. Sister2Sister Exchange Program 2021 For Female Pakistani Students

There are many scholarship opportunities for students, especially from developing or underdeveloped countries. Amongst many institutions and countries, just United States offers a number of them to Pakistani students.

Scholarships in general

But here is the thing, with the opportunities being for anyone, most men avail themselves most of them. This is not to say that men take away women’s share because there is a whole cultural context behind it. In this patriarchal society, men are told to be the ones seeking education to become the bread earners. At the same time, women have to excel at home. Such thought processes lead to a lesser ratio of women applying for scholarships and even lesser getting selected.

Sister2Sister Exchange Program

So how cool is it if the scholarship program is primarily for females? The United States has announced just that. They have launched a program called Sister2Sister Exchange Program. It is fully funded for career-oriented Pakistani women who want to make it big in their careers. The program will provide them with a chance to be enrolled in the summer undergraduate programs at US universities. Alongside that, they will also be connected to the mentorship network. The network will be aiming to connect the candidates wisely to ensure better educational and career advancements.

The Sister2Sister Exchange Program plans to prepare young Pakistani women for future career opportunities in Pakistan or abroad by enabling their participation in U.S. universities’ summer undergraduate programs. Moreover, the program will work towards developing mentorship programs and connecting young Pakistani women to academic and professional networks for educational and career advancement.

A chance for women to excel

For females to get a chance to enroll in the most prestigious universities of the US, the US Department of State will be finding the program. This initiative of SIE (Society for International Education) has assigned this program to be managed by a consortium of partners.

Let’s discuss a bit of detail about this scholarship. It ranges between 12 to 50 days and will cover most of the expenses a student may incur. So, for instance, from tuition fees to return tickets and accommodation, visa, insurance, and even food. The eligible candidates are those enrolled in Bachelors or Masters programs and should have 70% marks at least in the past three academic years. That said, they cannot be below 18 or above 24. The last application date is 31st January 2021, so if you are applying, do it right away.

Some ineligibility conditions are: being in the last year of the degree program, those who have been in an exchange program before in the United States, and those who possess dual nationality.

Being Pakistani, we know that nothing gets us going than a good ol’ load of swears. But have you ever thought about the science behind swears? If you haven’t, you’re in for a bloody ride!

The Background

There’s a phenomenon that suggests swearing is actually bad for your pain. When you swear in response to something you get into the mindset of “catastrophising” which inflates your negative feelings.

However, Richard Stephens, a psychologist and author of Black Sheep: The Hidden Benefits of Being Bad, wondered “why swearing, a supposedly bad response to pain, is such a common pain response?” He understood that swearing is a common reaction so how can it be bad?

The Experiment

Stephens persuaded 67 of his undergraduate students at Keele University in England to volunteer in an experiment. The students had to stick their hands in ice-cold water for as long as bearable. They had to do it not just once but twice, once while swearing and once not.

The Results

The results of this study are surprising at best. Moreover, they paved the way for people to understand that swearing ~actually~ helps.

It turned out that when they were swearing, the volunteers could keep their hands in the water nearly 50 per cent longer as compared to when they could not. In addition to that, while they were swearing their heart rates went up and so, their perception of pain decreased. To put it simply, they felt less pain from the ice water when swearing!

What’s The Link Between Pain and Swearing?

Pain has always been thought of as a biological area. However, from this study, we realise it is as much psychological as it is biological. For instance, the same level of injury will hurt more or less in different circumstances, according to Stephen. Consider for example men being tested by a woman in a pain-related questionnaire. They are most likely to lie or discount their estimations to sustain their ego.

There’s also good news that this direct link works for everyone. Initially, Stephens thought it would only work for those who already swore a lot but he was corrected.

However, the type of swearing might make a difference. Milder swears said in the presence of others might not do the deed. The real game-changers are the strong wears that act as painkillers. You know what to do next time you’re hurt: get swearing!

What Has The Government Spent So Far?

The most important question that arises to evaluate the performance of a government is its expenditure. Many experts have given their opinions on what the government should be doing and how they should be formulating their policies. We often see surveys, analyses, and reports coming out either in support or against those policies.

As per the latest reports, the government has allocated Rs. 93 billion for education. Out of which Rs. 29.4 billion is for development for the Higher Education Commission to invest in the education whereas the government was asked for a budget of Rs 104 billion, reported as reported by Dawn News at that time.

As for the health sector, the government had allocated Rs. 11 billion for health; however, the government spent Rs 1 billion to tackle the pandemic, as per reports from the Express Tribune. In the current financial year, the budget for health has been doubled and now stands at Rs. 25.5 billion due to the coronavirus pandemic and crisis.

The government’s focus on the development of the public sector was budgeted at Rs. 1,324 billion, 18 percent below the previous budget. The federal PSDP had been granted Rs. 650 billion whereas Rs 676 billion had been allocated to the provinces as per the revelation by Dawn News.

There are no doubts that the country is far from what the voters had envisioned as the current inflation rate is way too high, and a common man is yet to benefit from the promises made by Imran Khan and his team. He expressed that the media have manipulated Abdul Qavi in the past for ratings and attention. The cleric became famous after his interactions with the late social media personality, Qandeel Baloch, who was murdered by her brother, which was termed as an honor killing.

Abdul Qavi is now undergoing psychiatric treatment and has been stripped of his titles of “Mufti” because his actions do not reflect the ways of a respectable religious cleric, his uncle further said.

The Scandal Became The Most Talked-About News In The Past Week:

The scandal had been brewing for a long time. Last year, in October, Mufti Qavi had been caught speaking to Hareem Shah in a recorded phone call that was deemed as indecent by certain people. That phone call caused him to defend himself.

Last week, a video of Hareem Shah was leaked on the internet in which she can be seen slapping Abdul Qavi, who was sitting on a bed scrolling through his phone. Hareem Shah later confirmed that the woman in the video was her and the slap was a reaction to his indecent comments.

After Mufti Qavi defended himself on Geo News, Hareem Shah leaked recordings of Abdul Qavi’s video call. He can be seen passing obscene remarks and inappropriate gestures at Hareem Shah on the video call.

In the aftermath of this scandal, the former Mufti was bashed by social media for his vile, behind-the-scene persona and called for the title of “Mufti” being taken away as his actions were the opposite of the teachings he is supposed to preach.
