Economic Pinch And Growing Telecom Woes

The current economic crunch has added to the woes of the people and has worsened the prevailing challenges in many industries; especially the telecom industry. While regulatory issues regarding taxation, spectrum allocation and prices of license renewal have continued to hamper the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Pakistan, what gets little attention from local policymakers is the resulting decrease in profits and investment; which is particularly true for MNOs that have foreign ownership.

When mobile broadband services were launched eight years ago, the five MNOs that had heavily invested in 3G and 4G services were confident in winning back the investment by an increased earning; however, most telecoms could not make the profits they were initially expecting and contrary to their estimates had started to lose the average revenue per user (ARPU).

Recently, local telecom players have had to shift their focus to growing subscribers rather than investing in expanding the telecom infrastructure of the country. As ARPU for most telecoms continues to reduce, despite the enhanced 4G network coverage, organic growth has become harder to achieve. In such circumstances, we have already seen one major merger with rumours of another telecom looking to exit the market, in contrast, smaller telecoms such as Ufone (that got their 4G license only one year ago) have to re-strategise to make sustainable growth in the industry.

Starting with the macroeconomic crisis of 2018-19 and recently the Covid pandemic, Pakistani telecoms have made some incredible efforts to keep citizens connected during these challenging times; despite all the changing demand patterns and amplified data demand. Also, the quality of service issues has become more pronounced. While tackling these problems remains a priority for all telecoms; the exacerbated macroeconomic situation leaves no respite in sight.

What comes as a major area of concern for Pakistan is that out of the 4 large telecom players in the country. Three of them have HQs based in foreign countries and so any organic revenue gained has been minimalistic due to the sharp depreciation in Pakistan’s currency, dealing a severe blow to foreign direct investment (FDI) in the telecom ecosystem as well as the growth for the telecoms in Pakistan. During such times, the decision to buy spectrum, renew licenses and provide bandwidth, equipment and components becomes extremely expensive for local telecoms, as the prices for all these allocations are placed in U.S Dollars, with little margin for profit for the MNOs.

Considering that the top-three MNOs all refrained from participating in last year’s spectrum auction (held in September) due to these issues highlighted above, the new government is faced with the opportunity to respond constructively and address the telecom industry’s main concerns.

Moving forward, it will be essential for the government to provide some much-needed respite to the local telecoms and bring down taxes and appreciate that it is the MNOs and their investment in local telecom infrastructure that has played an instrumental role in the development of the digital economy of Pakistan, especially during the demanding days of the pandemic. As the government is faced with difficult decisions, it would be in the country’s best interest to trust the local telecoms with building a more digitally inclusive Pakistan and understand that economic stability can be realised through ensuring seamless connectivity and providing greater accessibility to not just the people, but the telecom industry.

Google Search Introduces A New Experience To Offer Helpline Support During Mental Health Crises

Karachi, Pakistan, June 2, 2022 – Today, Google launched a suicide hotline onebox for Pakistan. This feature enables users to connect quickly with a suicide helpline at the top of the Search results page. Anyone in Pakistan searching for suicide-related queries such as “suicide support”, “how can I commit suicide” will now be shown the ‘Umang Pakistan’ helpline.

Recognized by the WHO, Umang is a mental health helpline that offers support to vulnerable Pakistanis ideating or planning suicide.

This partnership between Umang and Google aims to help tackle the rising issue of suicides in Pakistan. According to WHO estimates, there are around 130k to 270k cases of attempted suicide in Pakistan each year. Meanwhile, Search interest in mental health issues has been on the rise. Topics such as “anxiety”, “depression” and “suicide” all peaked in the 2020-21 period in the country, according to Google Trends.

Farhan Qureshi, Regional Director, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, at Google shared “As we see from Trends, Pakistanis are looking for answers about their mental health. We understand time is of the essence when searching for help, especially for those who may be facing suicidal thoughts. We hope that this feature aids vulnerable users in finding help in times of need”

Kinza Naeem, Founder & CEO Umang Pakistan also shared ”Mental health is the biggest unaddressed problem of our era, specially at a place like Pakistan where more than 40% of the population is suffering from some degree of mental health issues. We are utterly grateful to google for this timely partnership. I am certain that together we will be able to reach out to the maximum number of people in dire need of mental health support and break the taboo around it nationwide.”

Understanding how brands can be more sustainable is important, here’s how it begins:

Educate Everyone

Sustainability is not anybody’s second skin or instinctive knowledge. It’s best not to discount the learning experience for everyone working in the brand and hold workshops or information sessions to learn about it. When everybody learns together and comes equally strong, more ideas can form.

Incentivize Sustainability

Many companies have devised a very effective strategy to bring sustainability into the mainstream. This strategy is that a sustainable goal is set and whoever tries to or is actually successful in meeting that goal gets rewarded a bonus. By incentivizing sustainability, everyone is encouraged to play a role in it.

Perform Locally

A lot of waste and harmful chemicals come into the process when brands continuously strive to make it big. Making it big is measured by how much are they operating beyond the local border. Did Stranger Things Season 4 Live Up To The Expectations?

The big day has arrived! The Hawkins, Indiana crew has reunited after a three-year sabbatical and one worldwide epidemic. Stranger Things Season 4 arrived with a bang, delivering audiences plenty of horror and suspense. It’s something the fans hadn’t seen in the previous three seasons, and to put it lightly, it left them surprised and not in a positive sense.

I have my own little analogy/review for how I felt about season 4. For me, it was like a long movie. Season 4 was the longest edition of the show’s history. It is five hours longer than previous seasons, yet the Duffer brothers (show’s directors and writers) were still unable to conclude the season, which is why Volume 2 will be released in July.

This season seems to lean more toward horror than suspense. Concepts from The Exorcist and Nightmare on Elm Street were used. The show evolved from a children’s thriller to an intense PG-rated one.

Another noticeable difference is the characters’ aging. Stranger Things Season 3 was released three years ago, yet according to the show, only six months have elapsed. The actors, on the other hand, appear significantly older. This astounded the audience since the youngsters (Lucas, Mike, Dustin, Will, Eleven, and Max) suddenly appear to be teens.

While the narrative of Season 4 is terrific and constantly keeps you on your toes, there are instances when it feels like too much is occurring at once. Four separate storylines are being told simultaneously, and while they are all well depicted, you may become confused at moments.

The Locations

This season features a number of locations. Everything happened in Hawkins in past seasons, however, this time problems exist in new regions. Joyce and Murray have travelled to Alaska in order to free Hopper from Russian custody. While the rest of the group is still in Hawkins, Mike, Will, and Johnathan are trapped in California. Eleven is also being experimented on at a faraway location.

It might be perplexing because all the characters aren’t in the same spot. You don’t know if everything is happening at the same moment. Usually, they begin with one tale but leave it at a cliffhanger to continue with the other stories. This leaves you confused because when they return to the first tale, it’s generally in the following episode.

Surprisingly, at the conclusion of episode 7, this all begins to make sense. All of the storylines merge into one. The hours of perplexity begin to make sense.

Is it, however, worthwhile? It was for me. I enjoyed the buildup, but I know many of the spectators did not. The programme might have easily stopped after season 3, but the creators opted to keep it running until season 5 to finish the tale.

Stranger Things Season 4 Vol 2

Season 4’s second volume will be released in July. We’ll see the characters reunite (hopefully) and decide whether season 4 is actually a binge-worthy programme.

CM Sindh Highlights Investment Opportunities In Tourism And Other Sectors

Islamabad: Syed Murad Ali Shah Chief Minister Sindh urged the investors to explore Sindh’s historic and compelling beauty by investing in the tourism sites across the province. CM presented the investment profile of the province at the “Investment in Sindh” session, held on the sidelines of World Economic Forum last week at Davos.

Sind Investment Session was organized by the Pathfinder Group of Companies. The conference was attended by Chairman Pathfinder Group Ikram Sehgal, Co-Chairman Pathfinder Group Zarrar Sehgal, Special Assistant to CM Sindh on Investment Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar and DG Private Public Partnership Assad Zamin, while a large number of potential investors and government officials were also present. Ikram Sehgal delivered a welcome note and introduced the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister addressing the conference highlighted some major steps taken by Sindh government to ease international investors. CM assured the investors of fair policies, transparency, and attractive economic returns. We are working hard to make the province investment-friendly to improve the provincial economy by creating employment and opportunities, he said.

A detailed presentation was shared with the audience offering them different potential sectors for investment. Eco-friendly Tourism, Water & Environment, Trade & Development, Education & Technology, Urban ecosystem, and food security. Around 90 percent of these projects would be completed under Private Public Partnership while few of them would be completed in the traditional way. According to the provincial government, an investment of approximately USD 6 billion would be utilized.

By taking the advantage of Sindh’s rich tourism profile, the provincial government has decided to invite local & international investments for a variety of tourism projects including up gradation of Gorkh Hills Station site, KMC Beachfront project, Thar Tourism Project, and Keenjhar Lake Project. All these tourism projects would cost around USD 680 Million. A bullet train is being planned to ease the commute of 400 kilometers between Karachi and the inviting Gorakh Hills.

Islamabad – June 1st, 2022: In a ceremony held at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, Mrs. Nasreen Mahmud Kasuri, Founder and Chairperson of Beaconhouse Group, has been presented with the honorary Living Legend Award by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in recognition of her invaluable role towards the development of the education sector in Pakistan over four and a half decades.

The award ceremony was moderated by Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director at SDPI and hosted a panel of distinguished speakers, including Shahid Hafeez Kardar, former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and Vice-Chancellor of Beaconhouse National University (BNU); Salima Hashmi, art curator, and former Dean of the National College of Arts; Dr Feriha Peracha, Director and Supervising Psychologist at Sabaoon Project; Sartaj Aziz, former Federal Minister and former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of Pakistan; Dr Ishrat Hussain, former Dean and Director Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and Chairman of the National Commission of Government Reforms; Dr. Salman Shah, former Finance Minister of Pakistan and advisor to the Chief Minister of Punjab and Ambassador (retired) Shafqat Kakakhel, former UN Assistant Secretary General and Chairperson of SDPI. The award ceremony was attended by prominent diplomats, media persons, and representatives from the education sector.

On behalf of the Institute, Ambassador (retd) Shafqat Kakakhel, the former UN Assistant Secretary-General and Chairperson of SDPI Board of Governors, presented the award to Mrs Kasuri at the event.

SDPI’s Living Legend Award is bestowed upon those visionary individuals, who have achieved excellence in diverse fields, including sustainable development, educational and cultural advancement, and the promotion of democratic governance, justice and human rights. The selection of the award recipients is done without any political, ethnic, denominational or gender-based considerations.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Shafqat Kakakhel lauded the role of the living legend for introducing the quality learning system in Pakistan 46 years ago through the Beaconhouse School System. He said: “We have gathered here to pay tributes to Mrs. Nasreen Mahmud Kasuri in recognition of her outstanding and unique contributions to the promotion of high-quality education from primary up to the higher secondary and even university levels in Pakistan.

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs. Kasuri said, “I am truly honored to receive this acknowledgement from SDPI. It brings me great pride to see what started as a vision to provide quality education to the children of Pakistan over four decades ago is setting new benchmarks today. It has been a lifetime of learning for me and inculcating values of learning onto thousands of whom have passed out from the Beaconhouse system over the years. Education is fundamental for nation-building and I remain committed to offering the skills needed to stand proud and play a role in the future of a prosperous Pakistan.”

Mrs. Nasreen Mahmud Kasuri established Les Anges Montessori Academy in Lahore in 1975 and set the foundation for the Beaconhouse network which has now developed into Pakistan’s largest setup of private educational institutions catering to over 315,000 students. Employing 62 percent women at Beaconhouse, Mrs. Kasuri’s role has remained pivotal in women empowerment in Pakistan in addition to quality education, offering these women economic opportunities and financial independence. In 2006, she was awarded the Sitaara-e-Eisaar by the Government of Pakistan for her philanthropic contributions to society.

SDPI, established under the Pakistan National Conservation Strategy, is a non-profit organization that serves as a source of expertise for policy analysis and development, policy intervention, and policy programme advisory. The institute focuses on strengthening civil society through research and collaborations, and keeps the country’s development as its top agenda. Through this award, SDPI has earlier extended its gratitude to Madam Nisar Aziz Butt, Agha Nasir, Munnu Bhai, Mr. Shoaib Sultan Khan, Mr Iftikhar Arif, Mr Sartaj Aziz, and Syed Babar Ali Shah.

This recognition for Mrs. Nasreen Mahmud Kasuri by SDPI is a tribute to her efforts towards building generations of young Pakistani men and women into educated, progressive individuals.

Making an error while typing and then trying to place the little cursor of your smartphone keypads exactly before a particular letter can get on your nerves. A recent video has brought a life-changing hack to light that tends to ease up this struggle.

The clip shows an incredible yet lesser-known use of the spacebar on your keypads. “How old were you when you discovered the spacebar on your phone isn’t just for spaces!” the text in the video reads.

The Viral Video

The clip shows a person typing “make a mistake” in the text box using a mobile keypad. Then, surprisingly, he swipes the spacebar that makes the cursor move like a mouse pointer. The hack allows the user to easily reach between letters and eliminates the need to delete the entire text due to an error.

Although the feature is not new and is believed to have been there all this while, many seemed oblivious of it. In the video, a man reacts to the trick that leaves him in disbelief.

Twitter Reacts

The video managed to amass nearly 400k views on Twitter and elicited varying reactions from users. This person was shocked to know of the trick and wondered what all her phone was capable of.

Some users seemed to be already aware of the hack and claimed that they had been using it. This one was quite surprised that very few knew of it and tagged it as “widespread knowledge”.

A user aware of the hack wrote, “iPhone issue, it always irritated me SO much that I can’t click somewhere in the text when I was writing something on an iPhone that I googled it and found this out.”

When Will It Come?

The organizers of the whole show have announced big things recently. The team of FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour announced that the awe-inspiring golden trophy will arrive in the land of Lahore on June 7. It was initially planned that it would land in Islamabad, the capital city, but now that plan has changed and Lahoris will welcome the trophy. The trophy is also a sight for sore eyes, many still don’t know what they’re looking at! The trophy shows two fingers supporting the globe.

The change in the venue was recently announced. Though the change is welcomed, it can be understood to be due to the political uncertainty in the country. Islamabad is the capital city and a lot can happen there.

When Did It Come Last?

The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour is held every World Cup year. It last visited Lahore in 2018 which was its first visit to Pakistan. Back then, former France midfielder Christian Karembeu accompanied the trophy. Those were the golden days!
