Islamabad, July 17, 2021: Pakistan today received 1,236,000 doses of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca through COVAX.

COVAX, co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi (the Vaccines Alliance), and the World Health Organization, is a global initiative that works with governments and manufacturers to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are available worldwide to both higher-income and lower-income countries.

The pandemic has certainly slowed down a lot of things, which includes businesses. Places that were usually bustling with crowds before lay deserted. However, between all this, Toyota decided to release the new ‘Yaris’ in Pakistan. Initial impressions of the vehicle were not well received. On top of that, their introduction to the market was hindered by the lockdown.

Many of the opinions that people had were based on Word of Mouth (WOM) rather than test drives or showroom visits. They said that people claimed Yaris to be an inconvenient buy. Many claimed it to be overpriced and too big for its functionality. However, after the lockdowns eased, something happened.

Toyota Yaris

The Yaris is a vehicle with tremendous capabilities. It houses an engine with a 4 cylinder in-line configuration. If we look at the engine capacity, we can see two variants, so there are options. The first one is set at about 1.3L, which is quite well for a sedan. The second one, however, is set at an even higher capacity. Now, that one is about 1.5L, which is something that can give competition in the market.

Apart from the capacity, the transmission variants are 5-speed manual and 7-speed CVT. When the lockdown eased in Pakistan, people decided to visit the showrooms, and they began to test the car themselves. Yaris started to receive positive reviews after test drives. People loved the way the vehicle handled itself in situations. Additionally, it even gave competition to the Corolla XLI and GLI in a rural location.

Toyota Rising

There are many features in the Yaris that make it a formidable contender. The car has a push start and smart entry as well as an infotainment system. People feel like they have stepped into the next generation of automotive when they drive this car. It also has hill-start assist control and traction control.

Now, if we take a look at statistics, we might be taken aback. The Toyota Yaris has sold almost 30,000 units in the last year and above making it the highest selling sedan of FY20-21. The counterparts of Yaris, Corolla, and City were even left behind in sales; the vehicle had certainly made a daring comeback. Not many people were expecting it to rise that high in a pandemic era.

A horrifying and gut-wrenching video of a young boy’s sexual assault is going viral on Twitter. It’s unbelievable, disgusting, and incredibly unfortunate. The boy still has gotten no justice.

A Teenager’s Assault

A teenager (17-18 years old) belonging to Kottli Sattiyan, Islamabad was sexually assaulted by some men. The video shows the boy being manhandled and disgustingly dealt with. The perpetrators are enjoying his misery and also filming it very proudly, ensuring that his face is being shown.

The video clearly shows how these men view themselves as above the law. They show no shame in their activity and in fact, treat the entire situation like a spectacle. The perpetrator also raises himself at one point to properly show the young boy’s condition and state.

The Twitter posts are made by a woman helping the teenager. The video has been posted by her. She notes that an FIR was launched against the men in the video on 11th July, however, no action has been taken until now.

What is even more unfortunate and saddening is that the teenager is an orphan. He himself went to the police station to stand up for himself. However, the police is not cooperating and simply being inefficient as his perpetrators roam loose.

What’s To Blame?

The fact that this teenager decided to seek help is also rare. Most young boys and girls, upon a sexual assault, are so afraid of their perpetrators or the society’s shunning, that they do not report. The fact that he has launched an FIR against them also puts him at the risk of death. His perpetrators can exact revenge on him too.

The commonality of such incidents in Pakistan that mostly go unheard can be a cause of inefficient police. Had the perpetrators in this case been caught immediately, a message would have been sent. Young boys are assaulted in large numbers in Pakistan with many documentaries exposing this harsh reality. Despite this, our focus remains on women’s clothing and their activities. Would it be reasonable to ask whether this boy was fully clothed or not?

In recent news, we came to know that Lucky motors are dealing in a lot of domains. They are currently working with various manufacturers to produce vehicle parts. Now, they have entered into an agreement with Samsung too. According to the details, Lucky Motors is going to brand and produce Samsung smartphones. This gives Samsung another gateway to produce its goods from.

With the competition rising in the market, the tech giant needs to make sure goods are made. The global chip shortage has only made things harder and device production lesser. A report stated that the facility will generate annual revenue between $300 million to $600 million. This means more potential for such industries in Pakistan.

We hope that LMC is able to completely go through with this plane. It is always interesting to see parts of one domain enter into another. TikTok has over two billion downloads to date. This makes it one of the biggest social media platforms out there. We even heard the news of video resumes becoming a norm through TikTok. However, YouTube Shorts is still in quite an initial phase whereas, TikTok allows users to add reality filters, YouTube doesn’t do that.

So, if you are looking to spice up the video and add aesthetics, TikTok is still the way to go. There are many similarities between the two platforms too. The time duration for videos is similar, with YouTube also making its shorts with 15 seconds.

TikTok Running Ahead

There is another thing that puts TikTok ahead of YouTube in terms of short videos. While YouTube allows the upload of shorts now, there is no concept of instant messaging. On TikTok, one can upload, share and watch videos with friends. All of this is done while chatting with them too. However, YouTube Shorts don’t have the ability to do that. The infrastructure of the platform is not made to communicate as quickly.

This is something that could give TikTok the upper hand. It can be difficult to be popular among applications if communication between users is less. Additionally, YouTube Shorts is currently built into the application experience. It doesn’t have a dedicated application. Thus, not everyone will be viewing or using shorts because they want to watch regular videos.

Unilever Pakistan’s ‘Face The Plastic’ Initiative Is Absolutely Brilliant

The awareness of the impact and environmental hazards of plastic is one that is crucial for us to understand as a nation. While we cannot completely become plastic-free, it’s still important to #FaceThePlastic and starts rethinking its impact.

Unilever Pakistan, one of Pakistan’s biggest FMCG’s has set itself the target to collect, recycle and repurpose more plastic than it produces by 2030. As part of this continuing effort, Unilever Pakistan collaborated with the Parks & Horticulture Department, KMC to set up public space at Frere Gardens to create awareness about plastic recycling in Pakistan. Unilever Pakistan has donated 18 benches and a play area made of 2,500 kilos of recycled plastic to the Frere Hall Gardens, in order to not only provide the public with environment-friendly parks and outlets but to also create a public dialog about plastic awareness. This space was officially inaugurated on Thursday, 15^th July 2021.

Unilever Pakistan is also investing in models that help in creating a circular economy and drive economic empowerment and livelihood opportunities for people as part of the #UnileverForPakistan initiative. The company recently announced projects for a plastic waste-free model city in Rahim Yar Khan, as well as brand-led initiatives on sustainable plastic reuse. These collaborations are part of Unilever Pakistan’s larger vision on environment action and the global Plastics commitments to cut down its use of virgin plastic, use reusable and recyclable plastic packaging and especially, collect and process more plastic than it produces.

Mr. Amir Paracha, Chairman and CEO, Unilever Pakistan highlighted, “Unilever Pakistan is fully committed towards reducing the impact of plastic waste and building a circular economy through bold, consistent and rigorous action. We aim to collect more plastic than we produce and make our packaging material sustainable. Since Naegleria Fowleri affects the brain, it causes primary amoebic meningoencephalitis.

The signs and symptoms associated, generally begin within 2 to 15 days of exposure and include;

Fever
Sudden, severe headache
Nausea and vomiting
Nasal congestion or discharge
Changes in smell or taste

However, as the disease progresses, the following symptoms can further aid in diagnosing the condition.

Loss of balance

Here are some ways which can protect you from this disease.

1. Clean Your Tanks and Water Reservoirs

2. Keep The Water Covered

Keep the water reservoirs and tanks covered in your house. This will minimize the number of bacteria and will keep the water clean and fresh for use.

3. Avoid Water Activities

Water sports and activities are the highlights of summer. However, it comes at the expense of being exposed to the deadly pathogen. Avoid water-related activities during periods of high water temperature and low water levels.

Yesterday, Shafqat Mahmood shared the incident of action taken against a board official who was caught helping his son cheat. While some appreciated him, others mentioned various other problematic instances of Pakistan’s education system. Amongst these instances, were videos of students openly copying during exams. But the most controversial video shared would probably be the one where a teacher was spotted taking bribes.

In the video taken with a hidden camera, you can see three men sitting at a table receiving practical registers from students. Seeing as the educational system in government schools is not as strict as it should be, it is expected for students to not have done their work. So, the students who have not maintained their practical registers obviously would end up failing. But the video shows those students approaching the men and submitting bribes, which the men are readily accepting.

Already, a large population in Pakistan is illiterate and the ones that are literate, most of them stopped going to school after a certain grade. Now, just imagine that they sought education until tenth grade. Hence, we will be attributing them as tenth-grade graduates. But in reality, they barely went to school and they passed because they submitted bribes in exchange for a passing grade. Is that what we want to promote; an illiterate next generation?

Xiaomi Corp. has officially become the world’s second-biggest smartphone maker. This report is concluded on the basis of the past quarter following an 83% jump in shipments. The pandemic hit all tech corporations however, none have experienced a bounce-back this incredible.

Historic Development

This makes for the first occasion for Xiaomi to break into the top two. Xiaomi is the Chinese maker of everything from rice cookers to gaming monitors and now it has made its name. Historically, the top two have been dominated by Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc.

Huawei Technologies also came close to owning this position. However, only briefly after, it got disrupted due to sanctions that cut it off from essential chip supplies last year. It was this withdrawal from the smartphone market that encouraged other Chinese vendors to up their game.

Xiaomi has become particularly active since then, introducing two flagship devices within the first four months. Its Mi 11 Ultra device features one of the largest camera sensors in the industry.

Apple versus Xiaomi

Compared to Samsung and Apple, Xiaomi is much cheaper. Its average selling price is around 40% and 75% cheaper respectively, reported by researchers. Hence, the major priority of Xiaomi this year has been to increase the sales of its high-end devices. For instance, the Mi 11 Ultra, however, seems like a tough battle. With Oppo and Vivo, sharing the same objective with a more strict marketing practice, Xiaomi is in tough waters.

The biggest reason for growth for Xiaomi has been overseas growth. The corp has increased shipments by more than 300% in Latin America, 150% across Africa and 50% in Western Europe. The Chinese maker has spent the first half of the year contesting the title of biggest smartphone maker in China. Now, in the international landscape, it has even beaten Apple.

Another reason why Xiaomi was able to overtake is also that the other companies were quiet. Apple’s second-quarter is quiet because it prepares for the launch of new products. The iPhone maker has asked suppliers to build as many as 90 million next-generation iPhones this year. The increased supply will ensure greater sales hopefully.

While we get flooded by news where men suppress women in their own households, it is an amazing feeling to see a man encouraging his wife to be more independent. In recent events, someone made a video of a Pakistani husband teaching his wife how to ride a bike. The video went viral all over social media.

There are many education boards in Pakistan. Each of them is important to the province they are in. In Karachi alone, you can find more than one kind of education board. However, if we look at cheating, the condition is pretty much the same everywhere. All over the province, we see numerous cases of exam cheating every year. From copying papers to handing notes through windows, what is it that the children have not tried?

While the condition of the board may have gotten a little better, there is still a lot of room left. Board exams are made from the same syllabus every year, with slight differences. Even if someone goes into the paper with good preparation, they may be held back because of a cheater. However, as recent news tells us, it is not just the children who are encouraging this behaviour. The CM KP has recently removed a board official due to them helping their son cheat.

The Chemistry Board Exam

A while back, a chemistry exam was taking place. Each student was either trying their best or trying to catch a glance. Among all this, one of the students was caught cheating on a paper. This was the son of the controller of examination in Malakand, Mian Wazir Jan. Apparently, his son was copying notes and answers from resources while in a room locked from outside. This was an attempt to make sure no one walked into that room.

Improving Education in Pakistan

Rather than helping students cheat, the officials should be attempting to improve the education system. Altering the syllabus and making sure students learn from it, should be priority number one. How can we hope to move forward as a nation if the education system is lagging behind?

We hope that all students ace their exam papers and go on to become the future of Pakistan. However, one must always remember that there are no shortcuts to success. There are only tough roads with lessons along the way.

Additionally, it must also be noted that exam paper difficulty should be set according to the academic level. Anyone with a passion to learn and obtain knowledge will never find ways to cheat. However, everyone in the education system should be considerate of the students’ needs.
