While we get flooded by news where men suppress women in their own households, it is an amazing feeling to see a man encouraging his wife to be more independent. In recent events, someone made a video of a Pakistani husband teaching his wife how to ride a bike. The video went viral all over social media.

The video shows a clear (non-traffic infested) road. On the roadside, you can see a man helping a woman on the bike and giving her riding lessons. Alongside the bike, on the pavement, you can see two young boys running alongside the bike, cheering them on.

It is an amazing achievement because it will give a sense of camaraderie to other women who are not able to gather enough courage. But more than that, it will also instill in the Pakistani men who feel their masculinity threatened at seeing girl bikers, that this is not a hateful act. They will see this when they watch this man teaching his wife how to ride a bike.

Not only does riding a bike make women independent but it also makes them feel brave enough to move around in the public sphere. A Baloch biker girl who recently got her learner’s permit had this idea.

Not only did the video go viral but the whole of Facebook was bursting with appreciating words for the husband. They were of the opinion that this is what empowerment looks like.
Empowering women is important because if it is a society that puts nurturing children as the feminine role then a whole generation will also be empowered.
Having put up with depressing news and complicated stories has exhausted us as a nation. So, when we see such feel-good videos, it is natural to feel relieved. Most viewers were feeling just that.
It will take time but this video is a good indicator that life will change for the better; that there will be more women in the public sphere; that the public sphere would be safer for them to navigate.
