Zaid Ali, the popular YouTuber who attained the height of success through his comic videos on Bollywood movies is now pursuing a career officially as a vlogger. Now, most of his content involves his family. In a recent video, that meant having his wife and mom as guests.

The idea behind the video was to have the saas-bahu have an honest conversation with each other. Maybe Zaid wanted to enforce the stereotype that the saas-bahu relationship is one where something is always going wrong. And they are not always truthful to each other. Well, maybe Zaid Ali, you are discounting the ‘saving face’ phenomenon or the notion of being respectful to the other person who joined the family not too long ago.

Saas-Bahu controversy 1: bahu is not perfect

Coming back to the video in question, Zaid asked both participants some questions and they were all very pointed and in reference to the other person. For instance, he asked his mother who her favorite daughter-in-law was. At first, she tried deviating it but then, when forced to give an answer, she made a remark that could come off as insulting. She said that no one is her favourite because no one is perfect; (well, no human is perfect, aunty).

Saas-Bahu controversy 2: bahu should not be older

In yet another question, Zaid Ali asked his mom what would she have done had she known that Yumna is older than Zaid. She tried hiding but it turns out that she would not have allowed the marriage to happen had she known earlier. Yumna was ready with her comeback though. She said that her other bahu is also older than her husband. The mom did add though that morally it’s not wrong to marry older women. (But ouch, aunty you said it like the men are doing a favor on the women for marrying them).

Yumna is not coming slow either

When Zaid gave Yumna a hypothetical question of who she would help were Zaid and his mom to fall down a flight of stairs. Yumna must have wanted to seem nice to choose the saas but her explanation seemed a little shady. She said, well, you know, aunty seems like she would need more help. (Are you age-shaming her or fat-shaming her Yumna?)

All that said, it seems like the show was scripted. Why else would Yumna openly say anything to her saas or saas call her out so openly? If their relationship was not good in the first place, they would not even agree to do the show together. And since they agreed to do the show, their relationship was indeed well, in that case, they would never be accusatory to each other especially in public.

Pakistan Ranked 2nd Lowest in Gender Equality

Beating Afghanistan, Pakistan has ranked second lowest in the entirety of South Asia due to the lack of gender equality that is prevalent in the country. This information was discovered in a detailed report on women empowerment by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Mahbub ul Haq Research Centre in its Annual Human Development in South Asia Report for 2016.

According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report 2016, Pakistan ranked 143 out of 144 countries with respect to the gender inequality index. Bangladesh and India ranked 72nd and 87th respectively.

This research is inclusive of many factors such as length of education, accessible healthcare, along with economic, political and legal participation of women.

The questions mentioned in the report include:

How has the economic, social, political and legal status of women in South Asia progressed since 2000?
Has the progress been evenly distributed between women and men?
What is the extent of inequality between women and men in various aspects of life?
What are the policy options for enhancing women’s capabilities and enlarging women’s economic and political opportunities?
What institutional mechanisms are needed to eliminate the discrimination of women?

Education

“Female literacy rate has improved by about 50% while female gross enrolment rates at the primary, middle and matric levels have also increased by about 15 to 20%. A similar trend can also be seen in higher education.”

This indicates that a significant improvement has been made regarding women’s education, although, 55% of females are still illiterate.

Labour

The report highlights that between the years 2000-2014, the rate of the inclusion of women in the workforce has increased by 50% whilst the gender-wage gap has decreased- the reason being the increase of education amongst women.

However, a majority of them are participating in low-quality work. Although women work more than men, their affiliation is rarely recognized.

Healthcare

Due to the increased use of contraceptives, the fertility rate has been reduced to 3.6 births per woman. There has been a change in the overall health of women in terms of life expectancy that has risen to 66.5 years.

In South Asian countries, traditional and religious values are treasured more than laws for women against abuse, harassment, and discrimination.

Although many laws are available and have been implemented over the past few years for the protection of women and their rights, and significant improvements have been made for the women of Pakistan over the past few years, it still has many lengths to reach, as the report clearly states.

In partnership with the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department, Government of Punjab, PepsiCo organized extensive vaccination drives and awareness campaigns to accelerate vaccination rollout among more than 3,000 employees and frontline associates. This is part of PepsiCo’s overall goal for ensuring employee health, safety, and wellbeing and stepping up to support the government’s ongoing efforts on expanding Covid-19 immunization. This public-private sector partnership resulted in preventing Covid-19 infection transmission and played an instrumental role in raising awareness, prioritizing employee safety, and safeguarding families, and creating positive community impacts.

This milestone was celebrated at a ceremony in the presence of Mr. Imran Sikandar, Secretary Primary and Healthcare Department, Government of Punjab, district health officials, and PepsiCo representatives. Mr. Imran Sikandar, Secretary Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department present at the ceremony remarked, “Thank you, PepsiCo Pakistan for being a responsible organization and vaccinating 100% of your employees. This is a prime example of what a joint venture between public and private sectors can do. Congratulations to PepsiCo along with the healthcare workers of Primary and Secondary Healthcare departments for achieving this milestone!”

The story of Churails revolved around four women and some others who decide to attack their attackers. The story starts with establishing a line of defense. Hence, at first, these women, began their investigations, looking into the spouses of their clients. But soon, the story gets the men in their lives involved too and they shift modes; from defensive to offensive.

With the new show ready to air, we were of course excited about the trailer. But now, that we have watched it, we are not so sure of what to think of.

The trailer has a plethora of star cast; every scene is just brimming with it. In fact, you will see many from the Churails cast as well. Sarwat Gilani, Faiza Gillani, Meher Bano are some names that appeared in both projects. But is it just the cast that is similar? Not really.

When you see the teaser ad the trailer of the show, you will see that it gives a strong Churails vibe. In that show too, the women were unapologetic and well, violent in order to convey their stance. In this show as well, the women are violent and unapologetic about their violent behavior. The narrative, of course, was playing right into the hands of the stereotype; it negated that women need not be on the receiving end of the violence.

Boys Do Cry – Minimalist Ad Hits Chords As It Breaks Stereotypes

If you take a certain group, divide it into girls and boys on the basis of a stereotype for girls, you are associating a similar stereotype to boys as well. Hence, when you say girls are emotional and sensitive, you are also saying boys are not. While girls have to try and fight to dissolve this stereotype, boys have sort of internalized it; they have internalized that boys don’t cry. Breaking this stereotype is the campaign titled: “Boys Do Cry”.

The campaign details

The iconic rock band by the name of The Cure was formed in 1978. In the early years only, they created a famous song called Boys Don’t Cry (1980). An Australian agency, The Hallway, has launched a campaign that is challenging the pre-existing stereotypes about boys. Long gone are the days (or should be) that whenever a little boy got hurt, his peers or parents would tell him to not cry or man up. Now, people are speaking up that this should definitely not be the case. They do that by taking The Cure’s song and applying their own touch to it.

Instead of the rock band’s Boys Don’t Cry, it becomes The Hallway’s Boys Do Cry.

Who we see?

What makes the campaign even more impactful is how it starts. It starts with a group of men, 30 in number. They belong to every race and walk of life. You will find teenage boys and white-haired senior citizens. You will find Mexican, Black, and White men. And you will find jolly-looking as well as serious men. The oldest starts singing. One by one, everybody joins in.

The way their voices all mix up, creates a sorrowful tone, but one that is making promises. It promises that the next generation will be better because they are pledging now to stop putting pressure on the young ones; the pressure of being strong.

Listen to this and if you end up crying, it is okay!

Hopefully, with more such campaigns, more people will internalize the idea that it is okay to express all emotions; that men can cry; that women need not cry.

Until then, let’s all play our part in this fight of breaking stereotypes. Let’s all fight not just for women but for men too.

Naveed Raza was asked a question by Ahsan Khan on Time Out With Ahsan that pertained to Alizeh Shah. Although Khan did not name her, Naveed Raza was not in a mood to be euphemistic. He said straight up: “why don’t we name the actor?”

He thus began critiquing Alizeh Shah and we have to say, it was constructive for sure. Naveed Raza pointed out what Shah did on sets: she not only cut Nawaz’s dialogues and refused to do certain scenes with him but she also constantly kept sidelining him. For instance, when Yasir Nawaz was drying his hair on set, she asked the team to move his chair. Why? Because the warm air was hitting her face!

The constructive criticism lies in the gentle advice Naveed Raza had for Alizeh Shah. He said to her, “you need to learn from them, not instruct them.” Naveed Raza holds the belief that no matter how popular or famous someone is, they owe a certain respect to others out of their seniority. “Yasir Nawaz has a profile,” says Naveed Raza.

Raza also added that Shah is yet to work a lot hence, she needs to be more humble and respectful towards the giants of the field.

Raza also added that Shah misbehaved with Humayun Saeed even though he was the director. Yasir Nawaz openly stated that he regretted working with Shah and he would have liked to reduce the number of episodes of the drama despite its popularity. Unilever’s latest announcement has shocked the world and especially the corporate sector. The multinational company is selling its global tea business that brought in billions in revenue in the last year. What has prompted this decision and why has it been sold? Let’s find out!

Unilever’s Global Tea Business

The name of Unilever’s global tea business is Ekaterra. It is the world’s leading tea business which also has a portfolio of 34 brands including Lipton, PG tips, Pukka, T2 and TAZO. Ekaterra’s business has generated revenues of approximately €2 billion in 2020 but this year the business has made a turn. Unilever has decided to sell this jewel in their crown and has announced the sale to CVC Capital Partners Fund VIII in the last week.

More About The Transaction

It is being said that the completion of this transaction will be completed in due time. The council consultation processes and the receipt of certain regulatory approvals are yet pending. As a result, the completion of the sale is expected to conclude in the second half of 2022. There’s nothing simple about it!

However, here’s the catch! Ekaterra’s boundaries in India, Nepal, and Indonesia will be kept with Unilever, they are excluded from the sale. Moreover, Unilever’s interests in the Pepsi Lipton ready-to-drink Tea joint ventures and associated distribution businesses will also remain.

What Has Unilever Said?

Alan Jope, the CEO of Unilever, said that this sale is nothing resembling a step backwards. Their portfolio is only developing further and this sale shows the big plans that Unilever has in store for them. There are bigger fish to catch! Jope said, “We are proud of the place that our Tea business has in our company’s history.”

Pev Hooper, a Managing Partner at CVC Capital Partners, noted that Ekaterra is a prime target in an attractive market to accelerate its future growth. CVC, according to Unilever’s team, will only help it reach new heights. “We look forward to working with the team to realise ekaterra’s full potential”, said Hooper. Until the sale finalises the business will remain with Unilever and this period of transition may slow down its growth too. However, in 2022 Ekaterra is definitely set for a boost as CVC will push full-throttle on this new asset.

Things Fire Up Between Hareem Shah & Farooq Sattar – What Is Going On?

Hareem Shah rose to popularity from TikTok (among other things). Whenever she makes public statements, there is something controversial hidden which leads to her becoming a trending sensation. You will recall the drama with Muft Abdul Qavi and then her mysterious husband whom she would just not reveal. Back to the present, she was recently invited to TBH with Tabish Hashmi. Even though the episode has not been released yet, the viral teasers are definitely predicting another viral episode of the show.

Hareem Shah at TBH

The host, it seems, asked Hareem about her infamous encounter with a political party person, Farooq Sattar. She made some comments. Now, on the same show, the host had had a conversation with the person in question on the same matter. To jog people’s memories, the show producers edited together both shows, and that brings about an interesting story to the foreground.

According to the clip, you will find Farooq Sattar expressing dissociation with Hareem Shah saying that they did not meet exclusively. He said that this was just a social gathering with tons of people; she was one of those people. She came to him and they clicked a picture together. He claimed that she didn’t even know her because he had not seen any clips of her. It was after that incident that people told him that it was Hareem.

Interaction with Farooq Sattar

Hareem’s story was different, however. She, in fact, referred to him as a friend. To be exact, she was talking about having friends and not denying that. With that, she turned the conversation to the Farooq Sattar calling him chotey guddu. She said that Farooq Sattar had told her that whenever she visits Karachi, she will be his guest. In the parallel universe, Sattar called it pure coincidence.

She also said that the picture clearly shows PC’s curtain, sofa, and table proving it is the hotel’s lobby but Farooq Sattar denied it saying Hareem visited him in his office. She ended the matter by saying that one should be courageous with what they choose to do; that if they have the courage and own what they do then no one would ever think wrongly of them. Otherwise, and she gestured a telephone sign, one should not talk to girls.

No matter how much a piece of news tries to be authentic, it does not always turn out that way. Sooner or later, it is found out to be false or undeserving just like that of Abhinandan allegedly shooting down a Pakistani jet. For that, according to sources, IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman has just been awarded the accolade of Vir Chakra. Of course, we are all aware of the reality of that situation.

In 2019, an Indian pilot was shot down over the border, who ended up in Pakistan. He was then captured and taken to the Pakistan forces. After treating him with the utmost respect, and offering him a cup of tea, he was sent back. This was done as a sign of goodwill and a friendly gesture.

Abhinandan And Accolades

However, it seems that India has decided to use this action, of ours, against us as well. We are not saying anything about the deserving accolade itself. We are talking about what that accolade is being given for. It is clearly false news, as many Twitter trolls have stated. In fact, the truth states that two Indian planes were shot down. Abhinandan was in one of them.

To receive an accolade for something that they have made up truly calls for some trolling. How can an accolade be awarded under false pretenses? It would make much more sense if they had proof to back up their claim. If an F16 was shot down, where is the salvage? Where is any proof of what would have been a wrecked plane?

6 Movies To Catch In Karachi Cinemas This November

Are you a movie lover? Scratch that! Are you a cinema lover? Yes? Well, then worry not, because today, we dedicate this entire article to you. COVID has kept us out of those freezing, dimly-lit halls for the longest time, especially in the coastal city, Karachi. But now that cinemas are finally open, it is time to rush to the nearest cinemas. The cherry on top, the Askari IV branch of Nueplex is also open so all those who find it tiresome to go to Sadar or Defense can go to the one here. Here are all the Karachi cinemas you can go to this November and catch up on movies.

1. Ghostbusters: Afterlife

DHA Nueplex is full of this movie’s screening. Just today, it has four shows lined up, and then every day the entire week, there are three or four shows you can choose from.

As for Atrium Cinema, you can watch the movie every day at 4 pm, until this Thursday. The rest of the schedule will be available after then but you can bet on it getting more screenings so if there is a choice, go with Dune.

2. Venom: Let There Be Carnage

No story as such but the second part of Venom is a cinema movie for sure.

At Atrium Cinema, it has one show every day until Thursday at 7 pm. As for Nueplex, both branches have two shows every day the entire week.

3. Eternals

It’s a Marvel movie but it does not have your usual Marvel heroes. But it is a Marvel movie all the same so it is one that you just have to watch on the big screen. Since it is 3D we would suggest going to DHA Nueplex for the show. The best part is that you can catch it in all Karachi cinemas.

Given that Sajal has never disappointed on the small screen and her debut in Bollywood was also appreciated, we had high hopes for her. Let’s see how her movie has us reacting. You can catch it on Atrium, Nueplex, everywhere you go. This could be because it’s the only Pakistan movie so it needs all the support it can get or because people are actually loving it. But go and book tickets for your whole family as it seems family-friendly.

Featuring Zendaya, this movie is definitely cinema-worthy. But to catch this one, you’ll have to hurry. It’s not available in the Askari IV Nueplex, and even the one located at DHA is only showing the movie on one screen the entire day. You can find it at Atrium though, so hit that up!

Amazon Executives In India To Face Charges For Smuggling Marijuana

Senior executives of Amazon India are facing charges for the smuggling of marijuana. Indian police arrested two men for almost 20kg of marijuana in their possession. The incident took place on November 14th. With further investigation into the matter, the Madhya Pradesh state police filed charges against Amazon’s executives. They did not reveal, however, how many executives were charged for the crime.

The marijuana smuggling case

It was revealed that this case, where 20kg of marijuana was caught, was not in isolation. Buyers and sellers were trading marijuana under the name of stevia leaves, a natural sweetener. In this way, they had smuggled marijuana in numerous states all over the country.

The smugglers had done a business of selling almost 1,000 kg of marijuana. The trade led to revenue of $148,000 (almost PKR 26 million or INR 1.1 crore). This should have led to only the sellers getting the end of the stick since Amazon has a strict policy against the sale of prohibited drugs. However, the authorities, it seems, found a discrepancy in the documentation. When the police asked Amazon questions regarding the matter, the employees sent documents. But the information in the documents does not add up. As a result, in line with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the executives were filed in the said crime.

In response to the ongoing matter, Amazon has come forward to say that it has strict protocol against selling prohibited items. Considering marijuana is amongst prohibited products, we will have to see what strict action they take.

Amazon India said: “The issue was notified to us and we are currently investigating it.”
