5 Entertainment Trends in Pakistan That Dominated 2018

entertainment trends in pakistan

Left, right and center, the constant innovation and creativity in the worldwide entertainment industry have deeply influenced the digital content!

Where every year a number of trends arise that outclass all the others when it comes to popularity, 2018 also brought many innovative concepts in our entertainment world and drifted away from the audience from the old-school notions.

Here’s a List of 5 Entertainment Trends That Dominated 2018!

  1. Web Series

In the age where the internet has literally taken over everything, Web Series remained the most popular entertainment trend in 2018.

Netflix was flooded with over 100 of its original web series and it also launched its famous first Indian drama series, Sacred Games, starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

‘Middle Se Ooper’, a short film by Kenwood, took internet by storm on YouTube due to its innovative approach towards storytelling. It depicted the hilarious everyday life story of a family who try to adjust in to a new lifestyle after moving to a branded house.

Starring Hamza Ali Abbasi and Emily Blunt, Pakistani based production company, Wingman Films, is collaborating with Hollywood to produce a supernatural-thriller web series, Djinn, which is expected to be the first Pakistani representation at the global streaming networks.

The producer of Balu Mahi, Sadia Jabbar has also announced her first Web Series, ‘Shameless Proposals’. This episodic series, in collaboration with BVC media, will highlight the social stereotypes a girl face when it comes to typical rishta proposals.

  1. Celebrity Talk Shows on YouTube

The trend of having a tete-a-tete with a celebrity in a web talk show was reached new heights of popularity this year.

‘Speak Your Heart with Samina Peerzada’, hosted by the veteran actress invited many stars from our industry and have millions of views on YouTube.

The hilarious interviews of celebrities by Wajahat Rauf as the Voice Over Man remains quite popular on YouTube. From the superstar Humayun Saeed to the famous Pakistani vlogger Irfan Junejo, these episodic talk shows invite the most trending celebrities and are absolutely a treat to watch.

  1. Item Numbers Going Out of Fashion

Remember when a film was considered incomplete without an item number? Well, not anymore because there has been a decline in the inclusion of such songs in Pakistani films from the past year.

Starring Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat, the 2018 Load Wedding received rave reviews from the critics and was well-liked by the audience even if it didn’t feature any item song.

And the song ‘Main Item Number Nahi Karungi’ from the blockbuster movie of 2018, Teefa in Trouble, speaks for itself!

  1. Drama Against Child Abuse & Rape

The trend of highlighting social evils through digital content has been in from quite some time and many super hit dramas have been produced meanwhile.

Unfortunately, given an increase in the number of child abuse and rape cases that have been reported in Pakistan, many dramas were produced focusing on the said issue. The Zainab Murder Case triggered the need to shed light on this highly sensitive topic.

The critically acclaimed serial Udaari became the pioneer to discuss child abuse and rape in our society, followed by a number of others including, Meri Gurya, Haiwan and Darr Si Jati Hai Sila.

  1. Pakistan Stars Eyeing Netflix

Pakistan is yet to produce a Netflix original but the future looks bright!

Famous actress, Sana Fakhar has also been revealed to be a part of a Netflix original series that will make her the first Pakistani actor to do so!

The Load Wedding actress Mehwish Hayat is also expected to star in Netflix web series by Pakistani director Jami.

Zahid Ahmed also revealed in an interview to BBC Asian Network that he is all set in talks with Netflix to star in its first original Pakistani production and we can’t be more proud!

The much-hyped project of the year, Aangan, is probably coming to Netflix as well which explains why it has not been aired online on YouTube or anywhere else.

The Sooper Junoon Concert Makes History as The Most Iconic Live Act Ever Seen in Pakistan!

On 25th December 2018, Karachiites were treated to the most awaited concert of the year featuring Pakistan’s biggest Sufi rock band, Junoon.

We also got a chance to be an exclusive part of the long-awaited reunion!

The event was organized by leading biscuit brand, Peek Freans Sooper to celebrate Pakistanis’ passion for their country on the birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam as well as to commemorate nearly 30 years of Junoon’s music.

Indeed, and what a night it was! The event proved to be a roaring success as it not only kept the audience singing along to the nostalgic tunes loud and proud but the awe-inducing showcase of live effects and animation were LIT.

Although there have been countless large-scale concerts throughout Pakistan’s history, a recent lull in the frequency of such events threatened to derail and completely submerge its live entertainment scene.

The Sooper Junoon concert proved to be the impetus needed to jumpstart that trend once again- we could not have agreed more!

The event was a star-studded one with popular celebrities such as Wasim Akram, Zohaib Hassan along with an army of other celebrities and personalities in attendance.

The much-talked-about Ladies Only Pink Circle, which even Ali Azmat acknowledged on-stage as a first, was the crowning glory of the event while other enclosures were packed with people of all ages, all of whom had come together to see Junoon’s reunion after a long halt of 13 years.

With a massive stage set for the Sufi-Rock Kings, the host for the evening, Faizan Haque, kick-started the event with Pakistan’s top DJ, Faisal Baig, whose Classic Rock music set helped build the mood for what was to come later.

Following him were four brilliant opening acts by Lyari Underground, Khumaariyan, Tamasha and of course Sounds of Kolachi. Every band making its own mark with the audience and leaving them yearning for more.

With the appearance of each live act, the anticipation of the crowd for Junoon’s first live act in years grew, eventually getting to a point where it seemed like they just couldn’t take any more.

However, once Junoon took to the stage, the evening took a turn from absolutely amazing to dream-like spectacular.

With an incredible light show that was accompanied by L.E.D graphics and animations playing on three humongous screens which in their entirety spanned more than 200 feet in length, the audience was completely swept away by the entry.

“Wow! Look at all these people!” was the band’s first words on stage after 13 years when they saw the more than 10,000 in attendance.

Junoon began with a tribute to the Father of the Nation before going on to perform iconic hits such as ‘Khudi’, ‘Sayoonee’, ‘Saaien’ and countless others. The band then came full circle with a beautiful tribute to Junaid Jamshed in the form of a heartwarming performance of ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’, thereby filling the atmosphere with great emotion and nostalgia.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the concert was when Salman and Ali veered away from the script to sit down on the stairs of the stage and do an impromptu performance of the legendary hit, ‘Wish You Were Here’; their way of paying tribute to global icons, Pink Floyd.

From there they entered their classic hit ‘Chalay, Chalay Thay Saath Saath’. To our surprise, Ali didn’t sing the last line of the song, a rare display of emotion by the rock star, which pushed many in the audience to tears again.

He turned away from the audience and said, “They ask that ‘oooh Ali what does this reunion mean to you…and I go, meh it’s the usual’, but – this reunion…”, and just left it at that, simultaneously echoing the feelings of everyone in attendance.

Even with such a fantastic presentation of raw sentiment and emotion through the power of music and lyric, nothing could prepare the massive crowd for what was next in store. For the band’s last performance of the evening, Hai Jazba Junoon. We were treated to what was, arguably, the longest and most brilliant firework show in recent history.

The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem with everyone gasping and cheering in awe as massive green fireworks appeared, just as they played the last note. The coincidence of the timing was perfect. It was all planned to perfection.

It is no doubt that Peek Freans has, once again, exceeded expectations with the Sooper Junoon Concert and given the people of Karachi and Brandsynario an evening where they have left us both dazzled and awed by legends and newcomers.

Kudos to EBM and Peek Freans Sooper for an unforgettable night.

Things All Pakistani Mothers Will Relate To

things all pakistani mothers will relate to

Being a mother means a lot more than giving birth to a child. It embodies loving, caring and nurturing a soul before you even see it and beyond – it is a relationship like no other.

From selflessly sacrificing her sleep to watching a child learn and grow, a mother is a continuous cheerleader that empowers whilst providing unconditional love.

Motherhood has its challenges, but it also has its joys

While it is a bond that is unmatchable, it teaches the significance of cultivating relationships.

A family is built when a woman welcomes a child into the world. However, she also needs help and support from those around her. It can be stressful and emotionally draining for a mother as she enters a new chapter in her life. For that matter, it is important for her close relations to give her the energy to be a better mom.

There are  many things a mother can relate to as she moves towards motherhood

While she is exhausted by the day end looking after her child and her family, a mother loves it when her husband is there for here.

She craves to enjoy a good night sleep once in a while and feels grateful when her partner takes care of the baby while she rests.

A new mother is overwhelmed at times, but with the right support things become easier and she can adjust easily to the new phase of her life.

Undoubtedly, taking care of a child and recovering physically from childbirth can be emotionally tough. As she feels anxious and is overwhelmed by the sudden change in her life, a piece of friendly advice from experienced moms will fix it all for her.

Don’t all mommies feel thrilled to get a little help from their mothers-in-laws?

There are so many things a grandma can do for an exhausted mom. Not only can she help the mother navigate the new waters of parenthood, but also nurture her bond even closer with her daughter-in-law. After all, a mother can only relate to what another goes through.

An epic Brand war that turned into a win for the Fans!

Last month, Careem and Pepsi had an entertaining social media battle that took the nation by storm.

It all began when a loyal Careem customer requested the brand for a promo code.

And the ride-hailing service decided to get a bit cheeky with its offer of a free Pepsi instead.

Taking note of this buzz, Pepsi hit back with a statement that shook Pakistan’s Twitterverse.

Careem being Careem decided to troll Pepsi instead, and this is where it got real!

Things went south when Pepsi hit back with a warning that no one saw coming!

Nevertheless, Twitterverse had a field day and loved the Twitter drama between Pepsi and Careem.

The fued got so viral that even Samaa decided to cover it via poll

Later, Careem’s Marketing Director Omar Abedin and Head of Marketing Pepsi Saad Khan put an end to the rivalry with a conclusion.

The two decided to give Pakistanis an ultimate win!

Pepsi announced that as a truce, it will give out 1 million Careem promos. Careem also called a truce by saying they will double the promos. This implies that together the two brands will now give away 2 million free promos! That’s an amazing win for all consumers.

Instagram Horizontal Feed: Pakistanis are Losing Their Cool!

For a short period of time, Instagram ‘accidentally’ changed its layout for a short period of time.

According to the Facebook-owned platform, it was a bug which caused the design to be rolled out.

The redesign required users to swipe horizontally instead of the normal vertical scroll to see their feed, befuddling many members of the photo- and video-sharing application, which has over one billion users worldwide.

Instagram Design

The move ignited complaints on Twitter where the hashtag #InstagramUpdate became a top trending issue.

7 Beauty Trends that took Pakistan by Storm in 2018

Twitter user Jeffree Star lamented “this #instagramupdate almost ruined my morning!!” while journalist Alex Heath of the online service Cheddar remarked that it “seems maybe intended to reduce mindless vertical scrolling?”

Adam Mosseri, who heads Instagram for Facebook, tweeted that the new design was “a test that went to a few orders of magnitude more people than intended.”

Sorry about that

Instagram said a short time later that it had rolled back the redesign to the normal vertical scroll.

“Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today,” said an Instagram message posted on Twitter.

“We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion.”

Some Instagram users remained upset over the glitch. “Never do it again pls”: tweeted one enraged user.

Panda Bonds Pakistan: All you need to Know

Panda Bonds

For the first time in history, the federal cabinet has approved a new financial strategy called Panda-Bonds in Pakistan. These bonds will become the new and favorable method to raise foreign exchange.

In a meeting on Thursday headed by Prime Minister Imran Khan, the strategy received approval. On the occasion, spokesperson to Finance Ministry Dr. Khaqan Najeeb shared that the Panda Bonds have been finalized after many meetings, consultations with Chinese Banks and several regulatory authorities in China and even stock exchange.

He said:

They will help government diversify investor base of capital market issuance and provide a source of raising renminbi (RMB)

Naya Pakistan: How to Make Our Country Great Again?

What are Panda Bonds?

Panda bond is a Chinese renminbi-denominated bond from a non-Chinese issuer, sold in the People’s Republic of China. These bonds were first issued in 2005 by the International Finance Corporation and the Asian Development Bank.

The Chinese government had been negotiating for several years about implementation details before permitting the sale of such bonds; they had been concerned about the possible effects on their currency peg.

How Will Panda Bonds Benefit Pakistan?

According to the spokesperson, the bonds will help Pakistan’s government to diversify the current investor base in capital market insurance and will also be used as a source of raising Renminbi.

Furthermore, he added that the tenor, size and pricing will be determined according to the market response at the time of issuance. The spokesperson also mentioned that the issuance will be done in several rounds.

As of now, expectations are high and a good response is currently being shown by investment groups and Chinese Banks.

PM Health Card System to Be Extended Nation-Wide

The Idea of Panda Bonds in Pakistan

The idea of introducing the Panda Bonds in Pakistan was going on for some time now. The idea initially was going around during PML-N’s time.

However, the decision was delayed due to the Debt Office in the Ministry of Finance had cautioned the government to review the fluctuation of Chinese currency versus US Dollar before moving forward.

According to official sources:

The timing of launching the bond has importance and now the government has decided to explore this option in the second half of the current fiscal year

The Chinese Renminbi-denominated Panda Bond will be accomplished in two tranches in Shanghai (China) and expected to fetch half a billion dollars.

Issuance of Panda Bonds

The RMB-based Panda Bond will fetch equivalent to $200 million and in the second tranche, it can go up equivalent to $300 million within the ongoing fiscal year.
