Celebrating Pakistan’s Resolution Day, thousands of Lahoris participated in the annual #LahoreMarathon2019.

The marathon covered a 10km route (starting from Gaddafi Stadium roundabout) and was aimed at promoting a softer image of the country, through engagement of citizens in healthy activities.

With the recent on-going tensions in the region, Lahore Marathon is an initiative of the District Administration Lahore aimed at delivering a message of peace on Pakistan’s Republic Day.

The Marathon invited citizens of all ages and gender to #RunForPeace, symbolizing a communal petition of peace and harmony globally. The non-profit event will be title sponsored by the brand Oye Hoye and organized by Dreamweaver Productions.

Citizens competed in 3 general categories; Men/Athletes, Women/Children, and Senior Citizens. In each category, winners were given cash prizes and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals by the chief guest’s Wife of Governor Punjab Mrs. Sarwar,  Ejaz Chaudhary – PTI General Secretary and  Saleha Saeed (D.C. Lahore)

Winners from each category were as follow:

  • Men 1st Position: Nosherwan Ashiq (Time 0H22M16S) – 2nd Position: M Afzal and 3rd Position: Subhan Ashiq
  • Women 1st Position Rabia – 2nd Position Farah and 3rd Position: Sarah
  • Senior Citizen Winner Khalid Ikram

While ensuring a positive image for the city and the department, the project also provided entertainment for the public. Acclaimed Bangra band Sahara UK performed live on the closing ceremony at Alhamra Arts Council.

The marathon covered a total route of 10 kilometers kicking off from Gaddafi Stadium Roundabout and progressing towards Hafeez Kardar Road, Liberty Roundabout, Main Boulevard, U-Turn from Jail Road Intersection, Main Boulevard, U-Turn from under Kalma Chowk Bridge, Liberty Roundabout with eventually concluding at the Alhamra Arts Council Gaddafi.

Over the weekend, it was reported that two minor girls were forcefully converted from Hinduism to Islam and then married off to Muslim men in Ghotki.

The news created a storm on social media and people just couldn’t stop talking about it.

Prime Minister Imran Khan then instructed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh CM to look into the matter and take steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

However, the incident initiated a debate around the world where even Indians criticized Pakistani authorities and held them responsible for it.

Similarly, the Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj took to her Twitter account and posted a Tweet, tagging the Pakistani Information Minister.

She wrote:

Mr.Minister  @fawadchaudhry – I only asked for a report from Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad about the kidnapping and forced conversion of two minor Hindu girls to Islam. This was enough to make you jittery. This only shows your guilty conscience. @IndiainPakistan.

The tweet caught the attention of Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane and she couldn’t stop herself from replying.

She wrote:

While I attach this video I do realise that Two wrongs DON’T make a right. Let’s not make this about protecting Hindu girls or Muslim families, let’s make this about protecting human lives across the subcontinent, across the world.

It’s not about ministers, it’s about the public!

She also requested to stop inculcating hate.

It’s hard to go to sleep while SO MUCH is wrong with the World today. Especially when the People in power instead of finding a solution are giving fuel to the fire. I wonder what will be left for them when they do succeed in their self destructive agendas.

On the other hand, according to MacWorld, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in early 2018;  along with updates to the iPhone X and a bigger version with an OLED screen (now known to be the iPhone XS and XS Max), Apple would launch a cheaper iPhone in September 2018.

The XR arrived and the SE was discontinued. A typical strategy for the tech titan which we have seen it do for some time now. However, given the reports of Apple’s latest sales, it appears that the strategy is no longer doing the company well.

Laal Kabootar Review: Closer To Reality Than You Think

Every once in a few years comes a film that surprises the audience by being closer to reality, different from the run-of-the-mill stuff and making the audience stay on the edge of their seats with its gripping execution.

Last year it was Cake, this year it is Laal Kabootar!

Synopsis

Laal Kabootar revolves around two central characters – Aaliya (Mansha Pasha) and Adeel (Ahmed Ali Akbar) – who are brought together by circumstances.

While Aaliya is searching for her reporter husband’s killer, Adeel wants to make quick money to go to Dubai and to a better life.

Insert a corrupt police officer (Rashid Farooqi), an evil businessman (Mohammad Ahmed) and their henchmen and you have a crime thriller that shows Karachi exactly as it is. Does Aaliya manage to apprehend the killer or does Adeel make it to Dubai, that’s the secondary question.

The primary question is ‘What is Laal Kabootar’ and that question will keep you engrossed in the plot till the climax.

Analysis

When was the last time you saw a Pakistani film where you saw characters instead of actors?

Laal Kabootar takes you in that zone with its perfect casting and rehearsed performances where Mansha Pasha looks the girl in search of a Laal Kabootar, Ahmed Ali as the guy who wants to have a better future and Rashid Farooqi as the cop we don’t want to piss off. Furthermore, the film is shot like a film, with no black frames in between, with proper frames, larger than life action sequences and use on real locations instead of sets.

The background score compliments the story although old cine-goers might not accept it, it perfectly syncs with whatever is shown on the screen. First-time screenwriter Ali Abbas Naqvi does a fine job, although the cuss words come out as disturbing and could have been lessened to add more commercial value.

Verdict – 4/5

Laal Kabootar maybe Kamal Khan’s first feature film but he has been in the field for quite some time, making impressive music videos as a director. He chose an interesting topic for his debut flick and what helped him was the success of web-series notably Sacred Games and Mirzapur. He seems highly inspired by the Guy Ritchie style of filmmaking and its good, considering no one in Pakistan tries to emulate the British director when his films seem closer to our situation than others.

The prominent actors perfectly fit into their characters although the theatre ones have either nothing to do (like Syed M Jameel) or they try to make most of the onscreen time to showcase their talents (Akbar Islam) and going overboard in the process. On the whole, it’s a one-time watch for all those who believe that we can’t make good films in Pakistan, because Laal Kabootar is right there at the top, with the best films ever made in the country.

Al-Haj group announced the signing of an MOU with Malaysian automotive manufacturer Proton, now owned by Geely China, to bring Proton vehicles to Pakistan.

Reportedly, as per the agreement, Al-Haj group will bring technologically advanced vehicles ranging from hatchbacks to sedans and even crossovers, SUVs and MPVs.

One of the cars spotted on the streets is Proton Saga. Upon further investigations, it was found that the news has been confirmed that Proton is indeed testing their vehicles within the country.

The investigation revealed that the 3rd Gen Proton Saga is being further experimented with. The new Saga is completely different from its predecessors as per reports. The interior and exterior are being completely revamped.

Samsung Galaxy S10 users are now complaining of a battery draining bug in the new flagship which was launched in February.

It has been reported that all three variant are marred with this bug which causes the phone to accidentally wake, draining the battery much quicker than usual.

For those who own the Samsung flagship, they know about its feature called ‘Tap to Awake’ which is also very popular in other smartphones nowadays.

Because the phone to accidentally wakes, draining the battery much quicker than usual, social media has now been flooded with complaints and queries in regards to the situation at hand.

Reddit user Drendude stated on the Galaxy S10 subreddit that they “have an S10, and I keep my phone in my pocket with the screen towards my leg (since my leg is far less likely to damage the screen). The only issue with this is that I started feeling the “fingerprint rejected” vibrations while the phone was in my pocket.”

Samsung is yet to address the problem. However, in the meantime, users can turn off the Always-On Display to prevent the bug from occurring.

Mufti Taqi Usmani Survives Assassination Attempt: Social Media Condemns the Attack

Renowned Islamic scholar, Mufti Taqi Usmani survived an assassination attempt as unidentified gunmen opened fire on two vehicles in Karachi.

According to Geo News, Mufti Taqi Usmani’s two guards have been killed in the targeted attack.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Gulshan Tahir Nooran stated:

“Moulana Taqi Usmani was traveling in a black Honda Civic along with his family. The second car with his driver and guard was a Toyota Corolla. The cars were traveling together and were fired on by motorcyclists near the ramp which goes from Aladdin Park to NIPA Chowrangi”

“First, Moulana Taqi Usmani’s car was fired on in which his guard, a Sindh police official, and driver were shot. The driver took the car straight to Liaquat National Hospital. The second car crashed at NIPA Chowrangi in which Sanobar Khan was martyred and the driver Amir Shahab was injured”

CCTV Footage of the incident has also been revealed on social media.

 

Panic has erupted on social media as soon as the news of the incident spread like wildfire.

Admirers of the scholar are taking to Twitter to condemn the tragic attack on Mufti Taqi Usmani.

Facebook Stored Millions of Passwords as Plain Text!

Facebook has advised users to change their passwords for three of its popular apps- pronto! On Thursday, a report by Krebs on Security shared something shocking.

The report read that Facebook acknowledged a bug in its password management systems that caused hundreds of millions of user passwords for Facebook, Facebook Lite, and Instagram to be stored as plaintext in an internal platform.

This means that because of that Facebook Bug, everyone’s passwords can easily be retrieved and that too without any complications at all. This also means these passwords were available to thousands of Facebook employees at hand.

For those who were unaware, an organization can store passwords to thousands and thousands of accounts using a process called hashing (which unscrambles passwords) before saving it to their servers.

If the server is compromised, it might just be the end of the tech-titan, which is why the company heavily invests in security and other means to keep the server protected from possible hits.

“As part of a routine security review in January, we found that some user passwords were being stored in a readable format within our internal data storage systems”-Pedro Canahuati, Facebook’s vice president of engineering, security, and privacy wrote in a statement

He added:

Our login systems are designed to mask passwords using techniques that make them unreadable. To be clear, these passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook and we have found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them.

Earlier last year, another Facebook bug was caught for stealing passwords. Known FaceXWorm, the bug is being used by cybercriminals to gain access to an individual’s profile to steal their information, like their debit/credit card numbers, address, and more.

The Facebook Messenger bug was first spotted by Kim Komando, consumer tech radio host, who had shed some light upon the matter adding that criminals are using these tactics and techniques to spread the bug, and other bugs alike via phishing scams.

As of now, Facebook has told WIRED that the passwords that were exposed weren’t all stored in one place and that the issue didn’t result from a single bug in the platform’s password management system.

Facebook says that the scattered nature of the problem made it more complicated both to understand and to fix, which the company says explains the nearly two months it took to complete the investigation and disclose the findings.

According to Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalwani, all ‘shaadi’ halls in the city will be closed by 11 PM. Earlier, the closure timing was midnight.

The decision will be enforced with immediate effect. Strict action will be taken against violators of the rule.

“No Plan to Finish O & A Level”: Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood

Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training, Shafqat Mahmood has claimed of a misreporting and has denied the plans of eliminating O and A Levels from the education system in Pakistan.

Reportedly, Daily Times ran news with the title ‘Education Minister puts Finger on Trigger Against O, A level Education.’

They also quoted him saying:

As current education system has many other flaws, those direly needed to be mended due to which said the plan would be practised on next level but it will be done ultimately.

Providing education in our public sector institutions, in elite private schools and in madrassas, three are totally different from each other.

I am personally totally dissatisfied with the prevailing education system that contains several loopholes.

Soon enough, this news started to spread and went viral in no time with several publications covering it. However, the minister took it to Twitter to clarify that it was misreporting.

He further stated “No plan to finish O level or A level. What I said that once we have been able to create a consensus on a single national curriculum, we would be in a position to consider a single national certification. May take a decade”.

This has created confusion over social media amongst parents and students equally. As of now, there are no plans to eliminate the O and A Level system in the country as of yet, whereas a single national certification is the aim and interest of the current government.
