The Jazz Blended Learning Program Receives Prestigious International Award

JAZZ

The Business Intelligence Group has recognized Jazz Smart Schools program as the “Sustainability Initiative of the Year”.

Jazz, Pakistan’s largest digital company has received other awards for this unique program. The group made the announcement in their annual Sustainability Awards program.

The sought-after award recognizes high-impact individuals, teams, and organizations that make sustainability an integral part of their business practices.

The Jazz Smart School Program increased student-learning outcomes and the teaching methodology by adopting a digital learning solution for public schools. The content was based on an existing national educational curriculum that was made more relevant and engaging for students.

This program was deployed through an online blended learning platform across 75 government schools for girls. The two-year pilot program began in 2017 and has impacted over 26,000 middle-school girls and 900 women teachers and principals.

The architecture of the activities and indicators are in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Given the strong digital monitoring component via mobile applications, the federal government education department now makes informed policy and decisions about these schools.

“We understand that digital education is the future of learning. This is why we design initiatives that connect the right tools to create capacity development for not just students but also the teachers,” said Aamir Ibrahim, CEO at Jazz.

“We are delighted that our effort has been recognized by the Business Intelligence Group and we hope such global accolades will help the program’s scale-up nationwide.”  The company believes in bridging the digital literacy gap for Pakistan so the country can live its full economic potential as it becomes a formidable emerging economy.

Mahboob Mahmood, Founder of Knowledge Platform, the educational solutions company, noted: “This is the first edtech project to have successfully scaled in Pakistan, and has been driven by a really strong public-private partnership among the Federal Directorate of Education, Jazz and Knowledge Platform. The program’s success has involved change management, teacher training, campus engagement and performance level accountability, as well as a cluster of digital content and technology solutions.”

“We are proud to reward and recognize Jazz for their sustainability efforts,” said Maria Jimenez, Chief Nominations Officer, Business Intelligence Group. “It was clear to our judges that their vision and strategy will continue to deliver results toward a cleaner, more sustainable world. Congratulations!”

Indus Motor Company Reports 13% Decline in Profit

Indus Motor Company

Indus Motor Company (IMC) aka Toyota has reported a decline of 13% in profits to Rs. 13.7 billion for June 30th, 2019 in Pakistan.

IMC had reported Rs. 15.8bn profit the previous year according to a notice issued by Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Tuesday.

This time around, earnings per share stood at Rs. 174.49 whereas they were at Rs. 200.66 last year. Furthermore, a decline in net sales by 13.1% to Rs. 158bn has been recorded due to a drop in sales.

Suzuki Alto 660cc Launch: Here’s Everything that Happened Over the Exciting Weekend!

The Wait is Over with Auj’s Victory in Pepsi Battle Of The Bands Season 4!

Auj

After two exciting months and some intense competition, the journey finally came to an end.

The intensive hard work materialized as the final battle narrowed down to Auj and Aarish, who became the two finalists of Pepsi Battle of the Bands season four.

Following what seemed like an eternity of anticipation, co-host Hina Altaf finally announced the winner of Pepsi Battle of the Bands for season four.

The Winner

Auj

Despite intense competition from Aarish, Auj won the biggest battle and took home the crown, along with Rs50 lacs, an album contract and lifetime royalties of the original songs performed during the course of the season.

The Runner-Up

Aarish

Aarish proved to be no less than winners and a more than worthy opponent for Auj. For their unbelievable journey, effort and talent, they took home Rs25 lacs and an album contract.

Special Performances that Blew the Audience Away!

The episode featured the finalists in the battlefield one last time to entertain the crowd on the grand blue stage. But before the winners were announced, the grand finale held a number of other surprise performances for the audience.

It all began with a mashup duet ‘Dhaltay Rahay’ by Pepsi Battle of the Bands season two and three winners Kashmir and Bayaan. The performance set the mood perfectly for the great occasion of the crowning of the Pepsi Battle of the Bands season 4 champions.

Dhaltay-rahay

The spectacular performance was followed by another by Shahi Hasan, Qawwal Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad along with Asad Ahmed (Guitars), Imran Akhund (Guitars), Imad Rehman (Keyboards and electronic percussions), Salman Rafiq (Drums and Percussion) and a vocalist/rapper Maria who all performed a song ‘Jaag Musafir’ which fused spoken word, rap, and qawwali. The track was composed by Hasan four years ago.

pepsi BOB S4

The performance undoubtedly raised the prestige of the stage and was fitting for the season four finale.

Moving forward, the families of Aarish band members were introduced who recounted their childhood stories. The band members also addressed their whole journey that started from Pepsi Battle of the Bands season two. and performed for the last time this season on the stage.

Aarish the band

Aarish’s performance on their original number, ‘Pukaar’ earned them their last standing ovation of the season.

After setting a theatrical tradition on Pepsi Battle of the Bands with ‘Mein’ last year, Meesha Shafi returned to follow up on it with a performance of ‘Leela’.

meesha shafi leela

The word ‘Leela’ comes from Sanskrit and the poetry revolves around a conversation between a girl and the moon, explained Meesha. Staying true to the poetic essence of the verses, the performance was as dreamy as it could get.

Auj

Next up, the family members of the Auj band were introduced to talk about their stories and struggles and the band’s incredible rise. They then performed their original called ‘Aansu’ as the last performance of this season, which too earned them a standing ovation.

EP

Now, the episode couldn’t be complete with a performance by Fawad Khan, could it? He brought his old EP gang back including Xulfi and together they performed a song called ‘”Jaag Musafir’ which narrated a conversation of an individual and time itself. Perhaps the best way to describe the performance would be ‘timeless’.

Speaking of timeless, the experts of the industry, Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia of Strings performed a new original called ‘Hum Aaye’ which was the episode performance of the season.

saad munawar khan

After all the great performances, the hosts called on stage the marketing director of PepsiCo Saad Munawar to share a few words and award the trophy to the winner. He spoke of the need to produce original music in Pakistan and how Pepsi is serving that purpose.

With Auj being crowned the Pepsi Battle of the Bands season four winner, they join a prestigious lineup of previous crown-bearers; Aaroh, Kashmir, and Bayaan.

Here’s to Auj, Aarish, and most importantly, the rise of original music thanks to Pepsi!

Imtiaz Super Market Pulls Indian Products from Shelves!

Imtiaz Super Market

Imtiaz Super Market has pulled all Indian products from their shelves.

Be it clothes, spices, or any other item. Pakistanis will no longer find labels reading ‘Made in India’ in Imtiaz.

The supermarket shared an entire blog when taking this decision titled as ‘Imtiaz Super Market – The constant supporter and contributor to the cause of Human Rights!’

In the blog, the superstore reads:

Discrimination is when a person is treated differently because of their gender, religion, caste, color or any such factor that is irreplaceable.

This differentiation is often to make the other person feel inferior or bad about themselves in comparison to others who are treated as superiors and the ‘better people’.

The blog further reads:

Imtiaz Super Market and every single person associated with it is against discrimination. From the head office to all the branches throughout the country, all policies and regulations are such that support equal treatment of everyone and considers everyone as nothing but a human who can benefit from us and vice versa.

Imtiaz Super Market is proud to state that since the beginning of this supermarket, it has been nothing but a constant supporter and contributor to the cause of Human Rights and it will continue to do so!

Abusing a Transgender Will Now Lead You in Jail, According to Latest Pakistani Law

transgender rights in pakistan

The way Transgender persons in Pakistan are treated – both by the people and the state- is worthy of being condemned and seriously needs to change.

However, it cannot be denied that the government has been making efforts to improve the status of transgender persons in Pakistan.

Some of the examples are the government’s order to get their ID cards made so they can be recognized as the 3rd gender, and orders s to give employment opportunities to them so that they can afford to stop begging and selling their bodies to make a living.

#SayNoToPlastic: Administration Invites Beggars, Transgender Persons to Sell Cloth, Paper Bags

Another admirable and extremely necessary step has been taken by the state to protect Transgender rights in Pakistan:

Rawalpindi City Police Officer has said that any individual caught misbehaving with members of the transgender community will be arrested.

Misbehaving includes any kind of abuse inflicted towards them, be it sexual, verbal, or emotional. If any law-breaker harasses the transgender persons or subjects them to sexual harassment, a case will be registered against them.

This step will greatly help improve the way transgender people in Pakistan are treated and hopefully the stigma attached with them which results to gender-based violence will be removed.

This Transgender Woman’s Food Delivery Startup Service is Truly Inspiring!

Let us hope that the orders passed are followed instead of just being orders in a book, and our society becomes more tolerant, peaceful, and friendly towards all genders.

Mehwish Hayat Among Top 5 Muslim Women Who Are Transforming the World 2019!!

Pakistani Lawyer, Munawar Sultana’s Victory as 1st Female MMA Fighter Encourages Women Fighters!

munawar sultana

Women in Pakistan are slowly beginning to shine, be it in education, sports, politics, or arts, and we are happy to see women being represented more than ever before, if not equal to men.

Of course, women have to work harder than men in order to be recognized in a particular field, but their hard work is not going to waste.

Earlier this month, yet another woman namely Munawar Sultana has added a feather to Pakistani women’s agenda of empowerment by winning her debut fight at ‘Serai Fight Night’ held in Islamabad.

https://youtu.be/99RFE36lQlw

What makes her victory even more stunning and worth celebrating is the fact that she learned about this fight only 18 days before the event.

Munawar is a professional Advocate by day, and is also pursuing her passion, MMA alongside it, and this victory has only encouraged and paved way for women interested in pursuing Mixed Martial Arts.

Here is her story in her own words, as expressed in an interview with Dawn:

“When I was a kid, I wanted to learn karate and I never really had an idea about MMA. My brother told me to join a club for self-defense but that place didn’t help me as such; I joined another gym and that’s where my MMA journey began, as recently as February 2018.”

“I completed my law degree first and then I joined martial arts but I make sure that I maintain a balance. I’m a lawyer by day and in the evening, I do my training. Advocacy is a full-time job but whichever law-firm I used to work at, I informed them beforehand that I won’t be able to work after 4 pm because I have to do my MMA training afterward.”

The sad but not unexpected part is that she does not have the full support of her family when it comes to MMA.

“My family never liked the fact that I did MMA and never thought it was a good thing. They’ve never supported me and they always wanted me to aim towards the judiciary, and obviously, that’s in the pipeline too. MMA is something I’m passionate about, I never wanted to take it on as a profession, I just liked doing it but here I am.”

“My family has always been against it because I’m a girl and within our society, girls are expected to adhere to certain norms. Even when I won this fight, my family wasn’t very happy. They said that it doesn’t look nice that a girl is fighting in the ring and half the world is standing in the crowd and clapping.”

As difficult as it already is for a woman in this society to manage two professions at once, what makes it worse is the lack of her family’s support.
However, it is wonderful to see that this does not stop Munawar from doing what she loves. We hope she continues to shine and give hope to women who lack the means or encouragement to pursue their passion.

1.4 Billion Apple iPhone & iPad Users Saved by a Patch!

Apple

Aug 27, 2019:

Apple has finally released an emergency fix for the iPhone after the tech-giant accidentally reopened a vulnerability.

Apple had accidentally let out an OS 12.4 release that enabled a current-generation iPhone to be jailbroken and therefore hacked.

Around 1.4 billion iPhone and iPad devices around the world are still operating on iOS 12.4.

Aug 21, 2019: Apple’s bad luck streak seems to be just going on and on as things have taken a turn for the worst.

It started with user-hostile iPhone batteries, to Face ID being hacked and iOS Code being exploited- twice! Not to forget iPhone 11 secrets revealed.

Now, researchers have bright forth the ‘KNOB Attack‘, which has impacted 1.4 billion iPhones and iPads all across the globe.

While the attack also took place on Android platforms, Google was quick enough to patch the problem and has already started the rollout out to devices. Whereas Apple users are not so lucky.

Pakistani Man James Bilal Khalid Caan Claims to be the Founder of Bitcoin!

What Does Knob Stand For?

‘Key Negotiation of Bluetooth’ aka KNOB.

What is KNOB and How has it Impacted iOS Devices?

Bluetooth has an encryption key negotiation protocol that allows negotiating encryption keys with 1 Byte of entropy without protecting the integrity of the negotiation process.

However, remote attackers can manipulate the entropy negotiation to let any standard-compliant Bluetooth device negotiate encryption keys with 1 byte of entropy and then brute force the low entropy keys in real-time, reads the blog.

The researchers further explain:

We found and exploited a severe vulnerability in the Bluetooth specification that allows an attacker to break the security mechanisms of Bluetooth for any standard-compliant device.

As a result, an attacker is able to listen, or change the content of, nearby Bluetooth communication, even between devices that have previously been successfully paired.

this attack affects basically all devices that “speak Bluetooth”, we decided to coordinate public disclosure with industry to try to make sure that workarounds could be put in place.

Furthermore, the researchers have added:

We conducted KNOB attacks on more than 17 unique Bluetooth chips (by attacking 24 different devices).

At the time of writing, we were able to test chips from Broadcom, Qualcomm, Apple, Intel, and Chicony manufacturers. All devices that we tested were vulnerable to the KNOB attack.

“After we disclosed our attack to the industry in late 2018, some vendors might have implemented workarounds for the vulnerability on their devices. So the short answer is: if your device was not updated after late 2018, it is likely vulnerable. Devices updated afterward might be fixed.”

Unfortunately, Apple confirmed the “iPhone 5s and later, iPad Air and later, and iPod touch 6th generation and later”. Which means that every iOS 11 and iOS 12 compatible device dating back to 2013 are now vulnerable to it.

A patch was issued in iOS 12.4 (bug code CVE-2019-9506). However, iOS 12.4 contains a staggering exploit which allows hackers to remotely jailbreak your iPhones and install malicious code.

At Least 4 Mineral Water Brands Declared Unsafe for Consumption: PCRWR

PCRWR

Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) in its latest reports for April-June 2019 has declared 4 brands of bottled mineral water as unsafe for human consumption.

According to the reports, a total of 77 brands were sampled out of which 4 were declared chemically unsafe. Out of these 4, Super Natural and Taj Pure Drinking Water were found to have too much sodium.

Whereas Classic Plus and KLINZ were found to have a lower pH than the standard limit. Reports further claim that the excessive sodium in 2 of the brand’s water can cause hypertension whereas a low pH can cause acidity.

The 77 botted samples were taken from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Tando Jam, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Sialkot, and Peshawar. PCRWR has been designated the task of quality monitoring from the ministry since 2005.

Karachi: Thundershower Predicted Over Next 3 Days, Precaution Advised!

Karachi: Thundershower Predicted Over Next 3 Days, Precaution Advised!

K Electric

The Pakistan Metrological Department has informed that a monsoon low over Northwest Orrisa has moved West-Northwestwards.

It now lies over central parts of Madhya Pradesh and likely to reach north Rajasthan on Tuesday. Under the influence of this weather, the system is expected to bring  Rains/thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) in scattered places in Pakistan.

Cities to face the impact include Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, Karachi, Shaheed Benazirabad divisions from Tuesday (night) to Thursday, while at isolated places in Sukkur, Larkana, D.G Khan, Bahawalpur, Zhob, Sibbi, and Kalat divisions.

All concerned authorities have been alerted to stay vigilant.

K-Electric Issues Precautions for Monsoon Season

K-Electric reiterates the significance of safety especially during monsoon rains. In light of the expected rains, the power utility urges people to adopt necessary precautionary measures to avoid any safety hazards.

In light of the alert for heavy rainfall and stormy winds, people are cautioned to maintain a distance of at least 3 meters from power infrastructure including poles, transformers, downed power lines, low-hanging power lines, trees that have fallen on power lines and tilted. Standing under transformers, billboards or leaning against poles should also be avoided at all times.

Children should not be left unattended and warned from playing near electricity installations. Do not touch electronic, power sockets/switches and electrical devices/equipment without insulated rubber shoes and gloves. The utility also categorically condemns the illegal abstraction of power, including the use of ‘kundas’, as this is the leading cause of electrical contact incidents during monsoon. Moreover, sacrificial animals should not be tied to or near electric poles.

During rain, parts of the city especially low-lying areas experience waterlogging and special care must be taken to avoid areas of standing water. In case of an electrical emergency, it is also strongly recommended to keep others in the area at least 3 meters away and wait for the rescue staff to arrive.

As per various studies; a large portion of Karachi is unplanned and includes encroachments in different areas and around electricity infrastructure. These areas and encroachments are infested with ‘kundas’, and despite multiple drives by KE to remove these illegal power connections and report encroachments to law enforcement agencies, the illegal hooks are reconnected creating a potential safety hazard especially during rains.

While KE takes precautionary measures including preventive maintenance, network-wide inspections of the power infrastructure, strengthened vigilance of on-ground teams as well as suspension of electricity supply to areas which are prone to such incidents; joint effort from all concerned stakeholders is critical to enforce necessary urban development standards across the whole city to strengthen Karachi’s resilience and eliminate the issue of illegal encroachments and ‘kundas’.

KE would also like to apprise that during rain power interruptions are often caused by factors beyond control including wind, lightning, accidents, breakage, etc. In some areas, power is suspended as a precautionary measure because Kunda-infested areas and spots with waterlogging are prone to electrical contact incidents. As per the criticality and sensitivity, the power utility follows an order of priority in each area for restoration, starting from repair of damaged high-voltage lines, feeders or substations, if any.

Next in order comes strategic installations including hospitals, fire, and water pumping stations followed by restoration of power to large areas, then smaller neighborhoods and finally individual customers. In areas with waterlogging, power restoration efforts can only be initiated following the removal of standing water.

KE is approaching local administration, provincial and federal government bodies for coordinated efforts to cope with the challenges KE encounter during and after rain to ensure reliable and safe supply of electricity as well as swift restoration efforts.

The power utility is sensitizing its consumers on all platforms and channels including traditional media, SMS, social media and customer care centers about precautions to be taken by the public to avoid electrical contact incidents during monsoon and it also urges all concerned stakeholders including representatives of different areas to help educate masses in this regard.

KE has established a wide range of customer care platforms and in case of long waiting time at KE’s call center 118, consumers can also approach KE via SMS to 8119 or via email at customer.care@ke.com.pk or via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/kelectricpk) or via Twitter (https://twitter.com/kelectricpk) or via KE Live mobile app.

Government Finally Takes Responsibility by Launching Fumigation Campaign for Flies in Karachi

house flies in karachi

Bakra eid 2019 in Pakistan this year coincided with heavy monsoon rains, leaving Karachi in a horrible state.

Rain in Karachi already does enough damage, thanks to the lack of infrastructure and initiative from the government’s side. Pair it with bakra eid and you have blood and animal hides and insides floating all over the city, turning the already dirty water red, and ensuring the city smells even worse than the usual sewage stench.

Needless to say, this also resulted to an increased population of houseflies in Karachi.

So much so that, instead of the mausam, makhiyaan became the new small talk topic.

People have been discussing how houseflies have conquered Karachi, what sprays they are using to battle the problem, and how irresponsible the government has been in this regard.

So the good news is, over the weekend, the government took the initiative to start a fumigation campaign on the directive of Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar. For the campaign, around 40 vehicles have been deployed to clean every district of Karachi.

Insecticide spray has been done in all zones of District Malir, while District East will be looked after on August 25; while fumigation drive will be conducted in districts Central, West, Malir and District Council on August 26, 27, 28 and 29 respectively.

The Mayor specifically instructed that no area shall remain without fumigation and, if required, the drive would continue as long as the end result is achieved.

It is good to see the Pakistani government taking responsibility to help improve the city’s condition.

Experienced Twitter User Warns Everyone of Mrs. Khan’s Service, Calls her Untrustworthy

mrs khan exposed by twitter user

Mrs. Khan aka the Rishta Aunty has been under fire ever since 92 News invited her over to discuss the increasing divorce rate in Pakistan and its impact.

A lot of women and even men were furious over her orthodox, obnoxious views, and made sure to slam the woman left, right, and center.

However, things might just get worse for Mrs. Khan now, as a Twitter user has taken to her account to expose Mrs. Khan for being untrustworthy.

5 Reasons Women SHOULDN’T Shouldn’t Get Married – According to Rishta Aunty

Take a look at what she shared:

Here’s what the story is in a nutshell:

A divorced man with a daughter contacted Mrs. Khan when he wanted to marry again. Mrs. Khan had a list of potential rishtas, out of which the boy’s family visited one. The families liked each other but Mrs. Khan refused to tell the girl’s family about the boy’s divorce.

When the boy’s family expressed disapproval and inquired the reason, here is what she had to say:

Don’t tell them now, tell them once the marriage takes place. Then they will be unable to do anything.

The job of a match maker is to bring together families so a bond can be formed between them in the future. The bond is sacred, and should be founded on love and trust.

However, in a society like ours, divorce is considered a taboo and frowned upon. So in a way, it is understandable why a match making business owner would want to hide such details; if they tell the truth, their business will suffer.

This still does not justify lying and cheating just to get more business. If Rishta Aunties like Mrs. Khan continue with such a lack of principles and integrity, marriages will continue to suffer and the divorce rate she loves discussing will continue to rise.

Famous Pakistani Fashion Designer Slams UN for Male Dominated Discussion on WOMEN Development

un women

It is no secret that the Pakistani society is highly patriarchal, and slowly and gradually, a change can be seen.

The major issue lies in the fact that, in a country whose female population is marginally more than the male population, there is little representation when it comes to politics and decision making.

Recently, UN Pakistan’s account posted a tweet about 4-day long consultations on Punjab Women Development Policy Implementation Framework.

The discussion included a wide range of critical issues including but not limited to the following:

  • reproductive rights and health
  • menstrual hygiene
  • mother and child health
  • emergency response services
  • anti-quack campaigns

The topics are purely related to women and their rights and issues, and it seems absurd that there is only ONE woman in the panel. Men are making decisions on how women should be treated by the state, and perhaps that is why development for women is so slow?

Social media noticed that, and was furious, to say the least.

Have a look at what people had to say in response to UN Pakistan’s post:

“Where are the women, UN WOMEN?”

Isn’t that the right question to ask?

Some decided to take a more sarcastic approach to address the lack of gender diversity:

People are beginning to take UN Women nothing more as a joke because of this absurdity, and that is really sad.

Famous Pakistani designer, Deepak Perwani, also took notice and made sure to leave a remark:

We are glad to see that people have started noticing these things, and identifying a problem is the first step towards solving it.

What are your thoughts on UN Women’s lack of gender diversity?
