30th August: Pakistani actress Mehwish Hayat applauded BBC World for highlighting the serious issue of Kashmir.

She further writes that she is happy that the world is finally seeing what is really happening in Kashmir.

She further adds that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The starlet retweeted the article titled ‘Kashmiris Allege Violent Army Crackdown’. To show solidarity with Kashmir, Pakistan observed ‘Kashmir Hour’ as Pakistanis filled the roads to protest.

The national anthem was played and sirens blazed all across Pakistan.

16th August: Mehwish Hayat is both loved and criticized by Pakistani and international fans for the stellar display of her acting and dancing skills on the screen.

She stole the spotlight for both good and bad reasons after receiving the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in March this year.

And she has stolen the spotlight yet again, after her address at a Peace event in Oslo(Norway) and recognized with an award for Pride of Performance.

In her speech Mehwish Hayat emphasized on how film industries have mostly used their power and platform to present a negative image of Pakistan and Pakistanis, when they could actually have done the opposite and broken the stereotypes the world already holds about our country.

This takes us to another celebrity who has been trending all over social media, but for the wrong reasons:

Priyanka Chopra, popular Bollywood actress and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, responded to a Pakistani-American woman’s audacious question at the BeautyCon summit in Los Angeles and has been under the fire ever since.

The question was with regards to the tweet Chopra had posted in February in support of an announcement from India about launching airstrikes in Pakistani territory.

She was asked why she had been advocating war between two countries especially while she is an extremely influential persona and also a Goodwill Ambassador for UN.

Chopra’s response was criticized all over the world for being condescending, and soon a comparison between Mehwish Hayat and Priyanka Chopra began.

Here is what Chopra said:

“I hear you,” she said. “Whenever you’re done venting… Got it? Done? OK, cool. War is not something I’m really fond of, but I am patriotic.”

Chopra ended her response with the following demeaning lines:

“Girl, don’t yell. We’re all here for love. Don’t yell. Don’t embarrass yourself.”

The comparison between Hayat and Chopra has gained so much traction that people have started petitions to take Chopra down as UN Goodwill Ambassador.

This situation has also led people’s attention back to when Mehwish Hayat received the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and how she really does deserve the award.

Flood Red Alert Issued by Met Office in Karachi for the Weekend!

Monsoon currents are penetrating in southern parts of Pakistan and increasing temperatures are likely to result in stronger rains, according to weather experts.

Karachi observed heavy rainstorm on Wednesday, while Thursday remained relatively calm in terms of weather.

According to the weather department, here is the amount of rainfall received by various areas:

  • Thatta: maximum rainfall of 83mm
  • Islam Kot: 61
  • North Karachi: 55mm rainfall
  • Saddar and Jinnah Terminal: 42mm
  • Model Observatory: 38mm
  • Landhi, Kemari :32mm
  • Old area: 29mm
  • PAF Faisal: 27mm
  • Nazimabad: 26mm
  • PAF Masroor: 02mm.
  • Badin: 39mm
  • Tandojam: 38mm
  • Hyderabad: 25mm
  • Diplo: 23mm
  • Rohri: 17mm
  • Kaloi: 15mm
  • Shaheed Benazirabad: 12mm

However, Pakistan Met Office has again warned the city of heavy rainfall and red alert has been issued for expected flooding as well.

According to the forecast around, 8 districts of Sindh can expect anywhere between 50 to 70mm heavy rainfall with water logging in low lying areas of the city and isolated places in other parts of Sindh.

Sindh: Educational Institues Slapped with Ban on School Pools

Sindh’s School Education and Literacy Department has placed a temporary ban on allowing school pools to be used by children in Karachi.

This decision came after a 6th grader drowned during swim class in the presence of 2 instructors.

A notification was issued on Thursday in regards to this decision.

The notification reads:

The schools where swimming facilities are available should stop swimming facilities forthwith and submit a detailed report of the swimming trainers/coaches who will conduct swimming class for students.

The department further stresses that schools must ensure the children’s ‘complete safety’ while they are swimming. Furthermore, it also emphasized that qualified instructors or coaches of national fame should be employed who follow SOPs.

All schools with pools must submit a detailed report about their pool(s) and SOP and testimonia of the coaches by 13th September. In the case of an incident, the license of the pool can be suspended or canceled.

On the other hand, the educational department committee will visit these schools and do proper inspections of pools and SOPs and will also speak with the responsible staff.

Multinational Brands are Eyeing Pakistani Textile & Garment Companies

As Pakistan is a major exporter of textile products, it plays a pivotal role in uplifting the national economy.

The global shift to online retailing is also intensifying cost competition, a trend that could really benefit the country.

Pakistani garment companies are battling their way into the supply chains of some of the world’s biggest fashion brands and aiming to catch up with Bangladesh and other Asian apparel market leaders according to a report by Nikkei Asian Review.

Pakistan is drawing attention from multinational brands due to its cost-competitive garment making, despite limping behind more dynamic markets such as India or Bangladesh.

Brands like Zara and H&M require high quality and low costs from their suppliers.

According to a report, Kay & Emms, a garment maker based in Faisalabad, says it is benefiting from clients’ desire to diversify.

“We are getting more benefit because the customers are thinking that they are not 100% safe while putting all of their eggs in one basket that is either China or Bangladesh,”

Faisal Waheed, sales and marketing general manager at Kay & Emms.

Opposed to the traditional leaders in garment production that are China, Vietnam and Bangladesh, Pakistan is still an insignificant player, and the pressure on companies to reduce costs is great.

However, the rupee has been depreciating for the last two years, which makes Pakistani exports cheaper.

“There is always a war-footing situation,”

said Waheed.

“Every customer is cost-conscious, because they know they have the buying power around the globe. They have a lot of suppliers in their basket — Cambodia, India, Bangladesh, China and Pakistan. If you don’t act on war footing, you will be losing business.”

Kay & Emms is still small by global standards, with an annual turnover of just $50 million and 2,300 employees.

However, it is growing at an annual rate of 60% and around a fifth of its sales comes from Zara.

“After an effort of more than four, five months, we got the first order,” Waheed exclaimed. “It was quite hard to get into their business.”

Pakistan has been recognised as an “attractive sourcing base” by industry executives including Spencer Fung, CEO of Hong Kong-based supply chain giant Li & Fung, as garment production for Western brands continue to shift to lower-cost countries.

Chinese garment makers interested in exporting to the West are also drawn to Pakistan, which has duty-free access to many Western markets due to its status as a less developed economy.

What’s even sadder is that Pakistanis themselves do not support locally produced garments, as in their minds, only imported brands fit their standards.

UN Pushes Disney to Save Wildlife Before Lions Go Extinct!

You must have loved it, and it made over a BILLION dollars at the box office. However, did it, for even a second, makes you wonder what’s happening to the REAL lions?

Well…

Did you know that, since the first Lion King movie 25 years ago, the African lion population has almost reduced to HALF, and scientists say up to a MILLION species are on the verge of extinction?

Teeth and claws belonging to the bodies of real, majestic lions, rhinos, and elephants are being ripped off and smuggled for jewelry. If this continues, the generation after the next might not see any lions at all, as they may go completely extinct.

To try to prevent that wildlife catastrophe from happening, UN has decided to raise funds by pushing companies like Disney to donate a small fraction of their spendings to wildlife preservation projects.

UN is hopeful that, if Disney takes the lead, other prominent advertisers like Netflix, Google and more will follow suit.

Pakistan to Observe ‘Kashmir Hour’ Today

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on Wednesday announced that Pakistan will observe ‘Kashmir Hour’ Friday afternoon.

He further added that the national anthem will be played and sirens will be blared. This decision was announced at the conference held to discuss the ceremonies aligned for Defence and Martyrs Day 2019.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also added that an event will be held every week to show solidarity with the Kashmiri people, starting today (Aug 30) between 12pm-12:30 pm.

They (India) have played their trump card, they don’t have any card to play now. Now whatever needs to be done will be done by us and the world, -PM Khan

Shortly after the statement by ISPR, cricketer Shahid Afridi confirmed his participation in ‘Kashmir Hour’ and called on people to take part.

PTA Approves License for 16 International Mobile Companies!

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken a huge leap towards high tech manufacturing in Pakistan and the future of technology.

The authority has given 16 international companies licenses to manufacture their products in Pakistan.

This is a new milestone achieved in Pakistan, just a couple days ago, the nation became the first in Asia to successfully test 5G technology.

This new venture will only bring an investment of billions for the economy, it will help the citizens in affording Smartphones equipped with the latest technology.

From July 2018- March 2019, Pakistan received a total of $200.1mn as an investment in the tech sector. A recent economic survey has revealed that the mobile sector has invested $158.3 million during the first two quarters of the fiscal year 2018-2019.

We have yet to know which 16 companies will be setting up their plants in the country.

Sindh Food Authority Fines Regent Plaza Hotel for Using Expired & Low Quality Ingredients

Sindh Food Authority District South led an inspection at the renowned hotel, Regent Plaza and found the food quality below health and safety standards.

Cockroaches, lack of standard safety tools, unsanitary condition, rotten vegetables, expired products, cheap food ingredients, forbidden food chemicals were found in the restaurant’s kitchen.

Sindh Food Authority imposed a fine of Rs 500,000 on the hotel and has given month’s period to become compliant to the safety and health standards. All rotten vegetables and expired products were dumped on the spot.

However, it is good to see relevant authorities doing their job and taking action against places that can seriously be harmful to the consumers’ health.

The movie’s cast looks quite promising and inclusive, with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie as the first LGBTQ superhero in the franchise, an openly gay character, and Kumail Nanjiani, a POC as one of the lead characters.

Other cast members include Salma Hayek, Bryan Tyree Henry, Richard Madden, Kit Harington and more.

The story of the film is centered around a group of immortal beings with the duty of guarding the planet from evil.

Kumail Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian, actor, podcast host, and writer who gained rising popularity when he starred in the romantic comedy The Big Sick.

He will be playing the character of Starfox, who is an Eternal from Titan (and Thanos’s brother) with the power to control others emotions.

His looks, sense of humor, and charm both on and off the screen will definitely be worth watching!

ACCA organized a high-level conference on Finance Act 2019 in Lahore. The event featured contributions from regulators, policy advisers, leading tax experts and senior ACCA members.

Prominent conversation leaders included Javed Ahmed, Chairman, Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA), Ashiq Ali Rana, Acting President, Lahore Tax Bar Association (LTBA), Irfan Ilyas FCCA, Partner, Irfan & Co, Muhammad Arshad FCCA, Partner, Arshad Law Associates, and Omer Zaheer Meer FCCA, Chair, ACCA MNP.

Speaking at the event, Javed Ahmed, Chairman, PRA informed, “PRA is actively working with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and all provincial tax authorities towards the harmonization of tax laws to ensure fairness and help with ease of doing business in Pakistan.”

He further said that he agrees with the 12 tenets of tax promoted by ACCA and his organization is working along similar lines. He specifically appreciated the role of ACCA in providing timely feedback and future-focused thought leadership to help the agency with developing a tax system for a digital future.

Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan in his speech said,

“As we stare into the face of climate crises around the world, ACCA wants to shine the spotlight on how our tax systems can really evolve to become a force for good, one that works for our societies and our planet.”

Speaking about the digitization of tax collection tools, Haroon A. Jan, Regional head of Member Affairs, ACCA said,

“Tax administrations have always looked to the latest technological developments to assist in the task of effectively collecting taxes from the population. The current shift in the digitalization of the global economy is an opportunity presented to national tax collectors to make a change in the efficiency of their processes.”

A large number of tax practitioners and business professionals attended the session. The event was followed by a networking dinner and a musical night.

The Jazz Blended Learning Program Receives Prestigious International Award

The Business Intelligence Group has recognized Jazz Smart Schools program as the “Sustainability Initiative of the Year”.

Jazz, Pakistan’s largest digital company has received other awards for this unique program. The group made the announcement in their annual Sustainability Awards program.

The sought-after award recognizes high-impact individuals, teams, and organizations that make sustainability an integral part of their business practices.

The Jazz Smart School Program increased student-learning outcomes and the teaching methodology by adopting a digital learning solution for public schools. The content was based on an existing national educational curriculum that was made more relevant and engaging for students.

This program was deployed through an online blended learning platform across 75 government schools for girls. The two-year pilot program began in 2017 and has impacted over 26,000 middle-school girls and 900 women teachers and principals.

The architecture of the activities and indicators are in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Given the strong digital monitoring component via mobile applications, the federal government education department now makes informed policy and decisions about these schools.

“We understand that digital education is the future of learning. This is why we design initiatives that connect the right tools to create capacity development for not just students but also the teachers,” said Aamir Ibrahim, CEO at Jazz.

“We are delighted that our effort has been recognized by the Business Intelligence Group and we hope such global accolades will help the program’s scale-up nationwide.”  The company believes in bridging the digital literacy gap for Pakistan so the country can live its full economic potential as it becomes a formidable emerging economy.

Mahboob Mahmood, Founder of Knowledge Platform, the educational solutions company, noted: “This is the first edtech project to have successfully scaled in Pakistan, and has been driven by a really strong public-private partnership among the Federal Directorate of Education, Jazz and Knowledge Platform.
