Starbucks UK Apologizes to Pakistani Man After His Heroic Act Goes Viral

There is a popular quote that goes like “When God blesses you financially, don’t raise your standard of living, raise your standard of giving.”

However, it is not too often that we see this quote being practiced. In a capitalistic world, most of us are part of the rat race to do more and have more, which only makes us selfish.

Therefore, when a person decides to stand up for a person in a position of lesser power than them, it needs to be appreciated and talked about.

A few days ago, a kind-hearted Pakistani man won many a hearts all around the globe by putting his foot down for a homeless man at Starbucks, UK.

Kahloon was enjoying a meal at the popular coffee giant when a homeless, hungry man walked in with hopes of getting fed. While everyone else ignored the poor man, Kahloon decided to buy him his meal of choice, and the £8.50 was paid for right away.

As the homeless man sat down to eat his food at the outside seating area of the café, someone from the Starbucks staff came over to him accompanied with a security guard, and expressed their concern about having a dirty, foul-smelling man in tattered clothes dining at the place.

Sajid Kahloon immediately decided to confront the staff regarding this behavior, and maintained that they had no right to remove a customer whose bill had been paid for. Upon meeting with resistance over this, Kahloon decided to record the drama on his phone.

Thankfully for Kahloon, the video took the internet by storm and as his story reached thousands of people on social media, two local newspapers also published the footage. The same footage then made its way to the mainstream papers such as The Independent, Daily Mail, The Sun and websites in America, Canada, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Spain and several other countries of Europe.

In the viral video, Sajid repeatedly said:

Now he is obviously eating the food, you can’t just ask him to leave. Let him eat the food and he can leave, what’s the problem? He’s eating his lunch, then let him eat the food

After around 3 hours of the video being on the web, Starbucks spoke up on the matter with their statement.

A spokesman for Starbucks said:

The interaction on video is not indicative of the environment we strive to create.

We are looking into the circumstances surrounding this customer’s experience and will take appropriate action to ensure our stores remain welcoming places for everyone.

We want every customer to have a positive experience, and we apologise that we did not meet that expectation in this instance.

Later in an interview Kahloon explained the situation in more detail:

He didn’t ask for money or anything else. I was shocked to see that a Starbucks employee and security guard told the homeless man he could not eat the sandwich and chocolate cake in the seating area outside the coffee shop.

When I stood by his side and defended him, I was told that it was due to ‘a policy of the company’. When I asked what was the policy, I received no answer.

I told the staff that they were breaching human rights of the poor man who was their customer.

Sajid Kahloon, who is the owner of Run Rooster, has been interviewed by dozens of publications and won praise from around the world for his kindness – something not common these days in the materialistic world. In total, over 70 million people have seen the video clip and news across the platforms.

With his little act of kindness, Sajid has made Pakistan AND humanity proud.

Singapore Becomes the World’s First Country to Ban Ads of High Sugar Drinks

It is no secret that the sodas and other processed sweet drinks we’re all addicted to are highly hazardous for our health.

Not only are they loaded with unhealthy levels of sugar, but it is said that they also play a huge role in encouraging obesity.

In one study, people who drank sugary soda in addition to their current diet consumed 17% more calories than before. 

However, it would be wrong to blame the sodas alone and entirely, no?

What attracts audiences to the product is the ads, as they have the power to even create a need where it doesn’t exist.

So the good news is, the first step against this sweet, sweet evil has been taken:

After a public consultation in the form of a survey, Singapore has decided to become the world’s first country to ban ads for such unhealthy drinks with high sugar content.

Singapore is calling it the “war on diabetes,” so the initiative even sounds as cool as it is.

According to Edwin Tong, Senior Minister of State for the city-state’s Ministry of Health, the ban will apply to “the least healthy” sugar-sweetened beverages, and all media platforms including print, broadcast and online will be covered.

“We intend to study them more carefully,” he added. “We want to find measures that are sustainable in the long-term, that shape not just market consumption behavior but also on the supply side to drive reformulation.”

This means, the following beverages (including but not limited to) might be affected by the ban:

  • Soft drinks
  • Juices
  • yogurt drinks
  • instant coffee

Moreover, the regulation will also mean that all sugary drinks would be required to display a color-coded, front-of-pack nutrition label on them so there is transparency about the sugar content and nutritional quality.

Pakistani entrepreneurs featured prominently in the region’s largest technology conference, 39th iteration of GITEX in the United Arab Emirates, which featured entrepreneurs and technology companies from over 140 countries,

Rahim Pardesi aka Nasreen is all set to Make His Acting Debut

Famous YouTuber Rahim Pardesi, famously known as Nasreen is all set to make his acting debut.

Currently, he is working on his first web-series with some well-known Pakistani artists.

According to a report by Something Haute, the web-series titled Inspector Bulla will be released at the end of this year and will also star prominent actors such as Nayyer Ejaz, Fatema Sohail, Yashma Gill, Osama Karamat Ali Shah, Ducky Bhai, Simi Raheel and others.

Rahim told the publication:

“We have only just started filming the series and will hopefully be releasing it at the end of this year. It’s an action/adventure comedy and the character I’m playing (Bulla) is a very positive character,” 

 

It will feature our police force in a positive light and that is something that’s going to be new for the audience.

“It’s a grounded story about a noble inspector involving some very real issues that plague our society to this day. The mixing of the veteran fraternity with the newer fraternity is what I think will really work on screen. There’s a strong dynamic between all the characters, especially the main protagonist and antagonist. Their conflict is fueled on a VERY sensitive matter,” shared Osama Karamat Ali Shah.

Well, we cannot wait to find out more details regarding the project.

Prince William & Kate Middleton Looking Forward to Royal Visit in Pakistan

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton are excited for their 4-day Royal Visit to Pakistan which begins today.

UK envoy Thomas Drew has said that the royal couple’s visit would showcase how Pakistan is “a forward looking country”.

“Most importantly, they hope to meet as many Pakistanis as possible during the course of the visit,” the British high commissioner said in a video message on Twitter. They are looking forward to building a lasting friendship with the people of Pakistan,” he added.

Drew went on to say as the royals are set to tour the country from today, October 14 to 18.

The couple recently met around 70 Pakistanis at an exclusive reception held by the Aga Khan Centre and hosted by His Highness the Aga Khan in association with Pakistan High Commission.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK Nafees Zakaria and the Aga Khan welcomed the royal couple when they arrived for the visit of the centre.

The Aga Khan, 82, hosted the Royal Couple to show them the contributions being made by Pakistanis to the cultural diversity of Britain.

During the reception, the Prince and his better-half got a chance to mingle with Pakistanis and earn more about the culture.

Furthermore, Saliha Mahmood told Geo News that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge asked her about Pakistani food and sought tips on what to eat during the Royal visit which is expected from 14-18th October.

They asked me about Pakistani culture, they wanted to know about Pakistani food. They are very excited to visit Pakistan. I recommended that they should eat tradition food of Pakistan. I told them that don’t worry about putting on fats, you can exercise later on and burn the fats!

Writer and broadcaster Sarfraz Manzoor told that the Duke said he likes medium spice but “I don’t think it exists in Pakistan”.

Facebook Awards LUMS Faculty with Research Grant on Digital Literacy

LUMS faculty, Dr. Ayesha Ali (Assistant Professor of Economics) and Dr. Ihsan Ayyub Qazi (Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Computer Science) have recently been awarded a research grant by Facebook for their proposal on understanding the impact of digital literacy on the spread of misinformation in Pakistan.

Only 11 proposals from around the globe were selected for the honorable Facebook Integrity Foundational Research Award.

The other proposals were from Stanford University, Princeton University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and Michigan University.

Reportedly, the tech giant might be bringing this feature to the desktop version so that users can send and receives messages in their inbox.

This was first discovered by Jane Manchun Wong who shared screenshots of the upcoming feature on her Twitter.

In a recent TVC featuring Mehwish Hayat and Ali Zafar, Diamond Industries shows how a wife gets upset with her husband for ordering a mattress online instead of going for the safe and reliable “Papa Jaani recommended mattress”.

By using the term “Papa Jaani” which is synonymous with Master’s Molty Foam, Diamond Industries attacked their rivals without even mentioning the brand.

The casual banter was not taken casually by the rivals and led to a legal battle.

Master Enterprises initiated a legal proceeding by filing a lawsuit in the Intellectual Property Tribunal.

Master Molty Foam won the defamation case against Diamond Industries Ltd. (Diamond Foam) and banned them from running the campaign.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, through a warning, has directed all satellite television licensees to comply with the orders of the Intellectual Property Tribunal (Lahore), which restrained Diamond Industries from using the Master Enterprises’ registered trademark “Papa Jaani”.

Makeup is an art that not many have mastered or perfected yet! However, Pakistani makeup artist and stylist Shoaib Khan proves he’s got the skill and expertise.

He transforms himself into Angeline Jolie’s iconic fairytale character, Maleficent and leaves everyone speechless.

 

“I’ve been wanting to do this look for so long, and finally, here it is! Inspired by the queen Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. Those striking features and bold red lips! I will never get over her,” he wrote on Instagram.

Dressed as Maleficent, the makeup artist added a pop of yellow to his brow bone, which is his extension to the overall look. He can also be seen flaunting red nails that match the lips.

The contour skills are totally on point, however, this isn’t the first time he’s shared a transformation picture.
