#WorldMentalHealthDay: The President of Pakistan Talks About Mental Health!

world mental health day

Today is World Mental Health Day, and the world is speaking up in attempts to either express their pain or raise awareness for those who silently suffer.

While a country like ours still falls far behind on acknowledging and understanding issues of mental health and well being, initiatives are being taken to spread awareness on the matter.

For the fist time ever, the government has categorically spoken up about mental health and THAT is nothing short of an achievement!

Not only did the Government of Pakistan take to its twitter account to tweet about it, but a special address from the President of Pakistan was also uploaded.

Take a look at what Dr. Arif Alvi, President of Pakistan has to tell the public:

“Mental health holds great importance for Pakistan as a nation, too, because a strong nation must have a strong, healthy mind.

Mental illness does not discriminate between rich or poor, man or woman, child or adult. the government of pakistan pledges to make efforts towards battling mental illness and spreading awareness about it.”

While it is a pity that mental health was never given importance on state level before today, it is remarkable that the government has finally decided to give it the significance it deserves.

Poor mental health is the root cause to most of the society’s evils. Let us hope that now that the government has begun paying importance to the issue, greater steps will be taken to ensure solutions for this problem.

Nissan Might Not Launch Cars in Pakistan

Nissan Datsun

Pakistan has been going through a tough economic situation for almost a year now. Although the inflation has caused citizens lots of issues, it has also cause massive chaos for several industries.

One of the industries that suffered the most from the economic crisis is the automotive sector. Because of the drop in the value of the Rupee, imported car parts have become expensive.

Due to this, prices of the vehicles have also increased causing a decline in demand. In such times, international automotive manufacturers like Nissan and Renault have decided to reconsider coming to the country.

Earlier, we shared the news that Ghandhara Nissan Limited wants to bring Datsun cars to Pakistan. However, now it is reconsidering its decision because of the troubles it is facing even before bringing the vehicles.

Reportedly, Nissan was expected to invest Rs. 6.5 billion throughout the next 4 years in the local sector. The manufacturer had plans to assemble the 1200cc Datsun Cross in July 2020, and 1200cc Datsun Go and Go+ were set to be rolled out soon.

Ghandhara had even signed an agreement with Nissan for the local production of the cars at the Port Qasim plant. They had even selected over 20 vendors to manufacture parts for its vehicles.

We have yet to see what Nissan decides and whether or not we will see Datsun cars on roads soon.

Instagram Takes Away ‘Following Activity Log’ Display Feature; Grammers are Furious!

instagram activity log

We live in an age where almost everyone is on instagram, almost everything is instagrammable, and *almost* everything is done For Th Gram.

As of June 2018, Instagram has reached the 1 billion monthly active user mark (TechCrunch, 2018). That’s a big milestone for the mainly mobile photo sharing network! More than 500 million active users are using the platform daily.

As of now, the Instagram app is one of the most popular social networks worldwide. A little over 5 years ago, in June 2013, Instagram had 130 million monthly active users. Since then, it’s grown 10 times.

Top 10 Personalities Teens Follow on YouTube, Instagram, & Twitter

A lot of us seek refuge in the app by posting looks and expressions we cannot show in the real world, while a lot of us start or become part of communities we love and relate to. It also works as a great ego-booster sometimes, and that makes us love it all the more.

The value of a lot of celebrities is also gauged by the number of Insta followers they have.

One of Instagram’s most loved feature was its ‘Following Activity Log’ tab.

The feature lets you see new likes and comments from people you follow. It also shows any new accounts they may have added to their feed.

It is actually a great way to keep a tab on the activities of your crush. *wink wink*

However, we recently found out that instagram is taking that feature away and boy, the grammers are NOT happy with it at all.

Are you just as upset at the removal of this feature? Let us know in the comments!

Pakistan is also participating in Pinktober in its own big and little ways.

Sindh Announces Public Holiday on October 14 on Account of Urs!

PCB, for example, has joined hands with Pink Ribbon and will make the following changes especially for Pinktober:

  • Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will turn pink to create awareness about breast cancer during the ceremony before the third Twenty20 International sets off between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
  • Moreover, pink ribbons will be pinned on the captains of both team, while players and match officials will also sport the ribbons over the course of the match.
  • The stumps for the last T2oI of the ongoing series will be branded in pink.
  • All sponsors of the series will also be changing their branding colours in the ground to pink.

Professor S Abdallah Schleifer, a Professor Emeritus of Journalism in the American University in Cairo chose Khan as the winner of the title.

Here is what the professor said:

“If The Muslim 500 was in print back in 1992 and I was the Chief Editor then, I would have nominated Imran Khan as our Muslim Man of the Year because of his brilliant performance in cricket, which culminated in Pakistan winning the 1992 Cricket World Cup — a sport I have always admired for its combination of elegance and intense competitive play,”

The most major impressive factors about Khan’s personality were his excellent performance as a cricketer and his determination to build and run the cancer hospital.

Moreover, his talks on peace with neighboring country India also played a role in earning him the title.

Women who play sports in Pakistan don’t really get the support they need and deserve, and that’s unfortunate.

Imkaan Welfare is holding an all women gymnastics championship on November 16th, 2019.

Registered and established as an NGO in 2012, the Imkaan Welfare Organisation aims to address and pare down the rates of both infanticide and child abandonment across Pakistan.

Network of Daraz Dukaans Brings Local Businesses into the fold of eCommerce

Daraz Dukaan

Daraz, the leading online marketplace in South Asia, launched Daraz Dukaans across the country one year ago.

Small brick-and-mortar retail stores located in various areas in cities across the country came to bear the platform’s branding. So did Kiryana walas and panwalas. The white-and-orange Daraz logo became increasingly ubiquitous.

Today, there are 1672 Daraz Dukaans across the country. The initiative has helped bring small retailers into the fold of eCommerce and opened up new streams of revenue for them.

Strong Reverberations

Daraz Dukaans

Good customer experience is a result of cumulative positive interactions between customers and a platform and Daraz Dukaans were launched to increase customers’ engagement with the Daraz.

The aim is to improve customer service with shop owners acting as Daraz representatives to assist customers with product returns and refunds.

The reverberations are much stronger: Daraz Dukaans have helped digitise local businesses and open up new income flows for owners.

Daraz agents are trained and given access to the online catalogue so that customers in search of a particular product and unable to access it in brick-and-mortar stores are able to place that order online.

Therefore, an online catalogue of 7 million products was made available to customers – even and especially those living in remote areas of the country where internet penetration is low and access to technology is limited.

Kiryana walas, panwalas and small businessmen across the country have seen their inventory increase many folds over and for every order placed through them, they received a commission.

Today, 10 Daraz Dukaans in Karachi are offering an added service by functioning as Pickup Points.

In order to bring customers greater convenience, Daraz has provided them the option to have their orders dropped off at a Daraz Dukaan closest to them so that they can pick them up at a time most suitable.

The collection points service is available only on prepayments and Daraz is aiming to bring the order pick up service to many more Daraz Dukaans before the mega 11.11 sale event.

Through such initiatives, the ecommerce leader has been able to bridge the gap between online and offline and strengthened its physical presence.

Daraz is on a mission to lead Pakistan into the digital age by 2022 by enabling anyone with a smartphone to do business. Daraz Dukaans tie in very strongly with that goal.

MS Jaguar Starts Electric Motorcycle Production in Pakistan

Electric Motorcycle Pakistan

MS Jaguar has become the first Pakistani automotive assembler to have made an electric motorcycle in the country.

The company has used it own design for this model. From the controller to the charger, and even the battery pack has all been assembled in the plant.

In Pakistan, there is a popular design of motorcycles which is used by big manufacturers like Honda.

Because there is an ecosystem for the design and the parts are more easily available, the look and feel of the electric motorcycles are almost the same shared Usman Sheikh from Auj Technologies.

If the average bike costs Rs. 4,000 for maintenance at about 40-50KMs, this bike will cost just Rs. 500 claimed Chaudhry Zahid Chairman MS Group.

One of the best features about the bike is that is does not make loud noises nor does it spread unfriendly carbon into the environment.

The future is electric and its important for everyone to play their part in helping to make Pakistan green again.

Cantonment Board Clifton to Remove Horse and Camel Waalas from Sea View Karachi?

camel horse sea view karachi

Update: October 11th, 2019:

After Salt n Pepper Village and all the street-side vendors being removed from Sea View Karachi, it is being said that the Cantonment Board Clifton is now trying to remove the horse and camel waalas from there, too.

It is yet to be seen if this news is actually true or not, but the removal of horse and camel waalas will surely take a lot away from the whole beach experience.

October 9th, 2019:
Earlier this year an ‘anti-encroachment’ drive was carried out in Saddar Karachi, which resulted more than 200,000 vendors and employees losing their businesses or jobs.

The vendors belonged to the middle-middle, lower-middle and working classes of the city, and not only this move affect their livelihoods, but it also presented a huge threat to the cultural fabric of the city.

Pakistanis Are Loving This Challenge Given to Mahira Khan by Her Mother!

Something similar has happened, but with a different area: this time, it is Sea View.

According to a tweet recently posted by Mohammed Hanif (writer of A Case of Exploding Mangoes, Our Lady of Alice Bhatti, Bhutto, the opera), McDonalds (Sea View Branch) is the only place left for visitors to enjoy food from when they visit the famous Karachi beach.

Many social media users are busy typing away in disagreement of this act. Take a look at why people are upset about it:

On the other hand, it is being said about Village that the court has shut it down due to the garbage it was producing.

We are yet to get an official statement from the government to better understand exactly what has happened and why.

Until then, you might want to take your own snacks to the Karachi beach.

Tasveer is lauded to be one of USA’s largest South Asian film festivals, declaring to have a “mission is to engage and educate the community through thought-provoking films, stories, and issues from South Asia & its diaspora”.

Farah Nousheen and Rita Meher founded Tasveer in March 2002 in Seattle, soon after 9/11. Troubled by the stereotyped and highly prejudicial images of South Asians depicted in the mainstream media at that time, they sought to dispel those mischaracterizations by giving South Asians a chance to speak for themselves.

If you haven’t watched the critically acclaimed Karachi-based crime thriller Laal Kabootar and are unsure what the hype is all about, you have another chance to watch the film on the big screen.

Actor Mansha Pasha made the announcement on her Twitter on Tuesday:

“Due to popular demand, Laal Kabootar is back in cinemas from Oct 11!”

Here are 21 Reasons why Forever 21 Might Have Failed!

Forever 21
Credits: Narcity

One of the most popular names of the “fast fashion” industry, Forever 21, finally filed for bankruptcy, after months of reports of potential “restructuring.”

“Fast fashion” is a term used to define the quick manufacturing of the inexpensive versions of latest trends produced by mass-market retailers. This is a fast transition from the runway to store and to then the customer.

Forever 21 which was once successful and flourishing was, however, lacking a plan for sustainability and a series of missteps.

The company’s bankruptcy appears to be a result of accelerated expansion while consumer tastes in both what they wanted to wear and how they wanted to shop evolved significantly in recent years.

Forever 21, Diesel, & Other Fashion Brands That Have Filed for Bankruptcy in 2019

These are probably the 21 reasons that had an impact on its decline:

  1. Controversial labour practices could be a reason and it’s well known that Forever 21 has faced its fair share of controversy over the years.
  2. Crowded by fast-fashion rivals gives consumers other options to choose from.
  3. Customer data hacked could be another reason.Forever 21 confirmed hackers breached payment system for 7 months, admitted encryption was turned off on some POS devices
  4. Didn’t buy American clothes
  5. Expanded too quickly while the crowds they catered too weren’t that great in number
  6. Flailing international operations
  7. Fractured management
  8. Gen-Z prefers quality and Forever 21 probably did not realise that
  9. Lawsuits over alleged copied designs
  10. Many unprofitable stores meant added cost
  11. Minimal online presence is a great disadvantage when everything is just a click away
  12. Missed the trend of thriving which applies the reduce, reuse, recycle principle.
  13. No cred on sustainability
  14. No social mission is also a negative in this era.
  15. Not enough sizes meant more customers left unsatisfied
  16. Poor in-store experience has probably led to less mall traffic.
  17. Poor quality would have driven the consumers away. No one wants to invest on products that do not last long.
  18. Ran out of cash
