Talks with Taliban

At the beginning of Khan’s tenure, talks with the Taliban was one of his main goals to achieve. His administration arranged negotiations with the United States and the Taliban. On March 2nd, an agreement was finally signed in Doha.

Free Groceries for Households Earning Less Than Rs. 25,000 in Pakistan!

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday announced that the government will help its citizens who are earning less than Rs. 25,000 a month by providing free groceries.

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting which discussed multiple ways to provide relief for the common man during this time of high inflation.

Reportedly, the poorest of poor families would be provided with flour, ghee, pulses, sugar, and other essential items.

Furthermore, Khan directed his finance and economic team to allocate an amount for ration in the upcoming budget.

PM Khan says that the government is dedicated to providing relief to the poor segment of the society.

Provision of relief to low-income segments of the society and adhering to their basic needs is the foremost responsibility of the state. The government is trying its level best and committed to ensuring meeting basic requirements of low-income segments of the society.

The premier also took it to his social media to tweet about the government’s efforts in bringing down inflation.

His tweet read:

In a twitter post, PM Khan wrote that the government’s efforts, including subsidy accorded to the Utility Stores Corporation (USC), have resulted in bringing down inflation by 2.16%. Inflation for February 2020 was recorded at 12.40% compared to 14.56% in January.

International Women’s Day 2020: 5 Ways Women Can Protect Their Health

Sunday, March 8 marks International Women’s Day, and with women at a greater risk of certain conditions than men, now is a good time for females around the world to take charge of their own health.

Here are some ways women can reduce their risk of conditions like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

1) Maintain a healthy weight

A European study published earlier this year found that although being overweight or obese increases the chance of suffering from heart disease or cancer for both sexes, the risk is even greater for women.

When compared to women of normal weight, obese women were five times more likely to suffer cardiovascular disease, and 12 times more likely to develop cancer, while overweight women had twice the risk of heart disease and four times the risk of cancer.

The good news is that even small weight reductions can bring huge health benefits according to the team, potentially reducing a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer by 20 percent.

2) Get chest pains checked out

Research published last month suggested that chest pain in women could be a warning sign for heart attack, even if tests show that the women don’t have blockages in major heart arteries, a primary cause of heart attacks in men.

The study found that in women who complained of chest pain but had no coronary artery blockages, tests showed that 8% had the myocardial scar, indicating that they had experienced a heart attack. However, one-third of these women were never diagnosed.

The team advise women to take note of chest pain and seek advice, and note that “women need to be taken seriously when they complain of chest pain, even if they don’t have the typical symptoms we see in men.”

3) Look after your bones

With women at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis than men, it is especially important for females to look after their bone health. Getting enough exercise throughout life, and also post-menopause can be particularly beneficial, with walking a good option for those looking for something low-impact.

A UK study found that hopping carefully for two minutes a day could strengthen hip bones. Research also recommends a good intake of calcium, found in yogurt, cheese, broccoli, spinach, and dried fruit and nuts, and vitamin D (sardines, mackerel, calf’s liver, eggs, cod liver oil).

4) Drink plenty of water

Urinary tract infections (or UTI), which are infections in kidney, ureters, bladder, or urethra usually caused by bacteria, are more common in women. A US study found that by drinking an additional three pints (or 1.42 liters) of water a day, women prone to UTIs could help keep infections at bay, reducing the risk by 48 percent.

This means that these women could also reduce the number of antibiotics they take to help combat infections.

5) If possible try breastfeeding

If available to you, breastfeeding has been shown to have health benefits for moms as well as babies, with one recent study showing that women who breastfeed their children are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure after menopause, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

The team found that the risk of high blood pressure was reduced by 10% for every one-child increase in the number of children breastfed, and by 4% for every 1-year increase in duration of breastfeeding.

PM Imran Khan to inaugurate Pakistan’s biggest ever KP U21 games!

According to Dunya News, the games are set to start on March 7, 2020 and PM Imran Khan is expected to inaugurate the games on March 8, 2020. Asfandyar Khan Khattak Director General Sports told the media that all the preparations have been finalized and the players will be arriving on March 6. Moreover, the games are to begin on March 7 while PM Khan is expected to open the Games on March 8, 2020.

The games will have 32 male and 27 female disciplines and will be held at Qayyum Sports Complex. The games will include athletics, volleyball, football, badminton, tug of war, snooker, squash, kabaddi, etc where a total of 2,940 players from different districts of the provinces are expected to be participating.

Mr. Khattak also said that these games that are now being held at Tehsil level and now Inter-District and Inter-Regional levels, would send a strong and powerful message of peace to the rest of the world. He also mentioned that government should encourage and show their utmost involvement in such healthy activities for country’s youth.

These provincial games should definitely make a difference and impact our youth. Moreover, this would also encourage youth to showcase their skills and talent and participate in such activities which would push them to perform on an international level.

Pakistan Reconsiders Implementation of New Social Media Laws & Regulations

What Happened? – The Government of Pakistan approved new social media rules and regulations. However, it welcomed a lot of backlash with it.

Opponents say that these new rules ‘stifle dissent and free speech.’ Moreover, social media companies will be obliged to help law enforcement agencies access data as well as to remove online content deemed ‘unlawful’.

Not just that, those who do not comply with these new rules face a risk of being blocked online according to a copy of the regulations seen by Reuters news agency.

What were the regulations? – Pakistan’s federal cabinet approved a new set of regulations on social media called “Citizens Protection Rules (Against Online Harm) 2020” on January 28, 2020.

The regulations require social media companies to establish representative offices in Pakistan, to remove any ‘unlawful content’ within 24 hours, to prevent live streaming of any content “related to terrorism, extremism, hate speech, defamation, fake news, incitement to violence and national security.”

If a company does not comply, its services can be blocked and face fines of up to 500 million rupees ($3.24 million). The officials say that the law was not meant to restrict online platforms but in fact “to invite them to register in Pakistan and expand local footprint.”

What’s next? – Because of the massive backlash, the government has decided to halt the implementation of these rules and reconsider. Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) wrote to Prime Minister Imran Khan to express their concerns and disapproval.

In the letter, the coalition threatened that Facebook, YouTube, and Google will withdraw from Pakistan if the regulation is not withdrawn. Sticking to these regulations means that this decision could impact 70 million people in the country and their freedom of expression and speech may be compromised.

However, Dr. Arslan Khalid said there is no truth in such claims, he says that Facebook, Google, and Twitter have threatened to leave Pakistan.

In the letter to PM Imran Khan, Asia internet Coalition (AIC) expressed its reservations over the new set of rules. It called for public consultation to ensure wider participation and that is exactly why the committee has been formed. There’s no mention of any threat by any social media company of leaving Pakistan -Dr Khalid told Gulf News

“The letter clearly says that AIC was not against regulation of social media and in fact offered Government of Pakistan to work in collaboration towards solutions.”

What do people have to say? – Nighat Dad, a social activist who runs a non-profit Digital Rights Foundation in Pakistan told Reuters:

The worrying part for me is that the definition around extremism, religion or culture is so wide and ambiguous and that means they have these unfettered power to call any online content illegal or extremist or anti-state.

Farieha Aziz, the founder of Bolo Bhi a digital rights advocacy group shared:

This is the kind of overreach we were worried about,” she said. “They’re trying to go beyond the ambit of the law, trying to go above and beyond what the law allows them to do.

Now What?- Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed the Ministry of Information and Technology to form a 4-member committee to oversee all developments. This committee will be led by Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) Chairman, Amir Azeem Bajwa and will collaborate with other stakeholders along with AIC to find common ground.

The committee will present its progress report to PM Khan after two months.

Javeria Khan, on Sunday, came to be only the fourth Pakistani woman cricketer to have played in 100 Twenty20 Internationals.

“It is disappointing that we couldn’t make the most of the chances and areas of advantage in today’s match and I would have been delighted had we won this crucial match.

The girls fought tooth and nail, but credit to South Africa for winning the match and coming to be the first team from our group to enter the semi-finals.” She added.

She also said her voyage with the national team has been “exciting” and one that has educated her a tremendous deal about cricket as well as other facets of life. “It gives me joy to see where Pakistan cricket has evolved today. ”The fans take a keen interest and follow our matches everywhere in the world” added Javeria.

“This has also led to more participation from young girls in sports and it is heartening for me to see talented youngsters from schools and colleges coming up,” stated Javeria.

Petrol Prices Fall by Rs 5 per Liter in Pakistan!

The Government of Pakistan has decided to reduce Rs. 5 on petroleum products. This decision comes after global oil prices have reduced.

A notification was circulated for this purpose. The notification highlights that the government has decided to reduce petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs 5 per liter, whereas kerosene oil and light diesel oil prices have also been cut by Rs 7 per liter.

Petrol is now available for Rs 111.6 per liter, high-speed diesel for Rs 122.6 per liter, kerosene oil for Rs 92.45 per liter and light diesel oil for Rs 77.51 per liter.

The revised prices have taken effect from the 1^st of March 2020.

Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan to Distribute 50,000 Undergraduate Scholarships Under Ehsaas Program

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will give away 50,000 undergraduate scholarships to the needy students that have been shortlisted under the Ehsaas Program.

What is the Ehsaas Program? – The objective of the Ehsaas scholarships program is to ensure that no eligible student is deprived of higher education because of financial need.

How many scholarships? – The Ehsaas Program aims to hand out 200,000 scholarships over a course of 4 years. The first batch of 50,000 scholarships will be handed out today.

Reportedly, amongst the beneficiary of these scholarships, half of the students are girls and hail from low-income backgrounds, whereas 2% of scholarships have been allocated for special needs students.

What is the eligibility? – Students with a household income of Rs 45,000 or below and studying in undergraduate programmes across 119 public sector universities recognized by HEC were eligible to apply.

Reportedly, as many as 132,192 undergraduate students (49,841 girls) applied for scholarships for the academic year 2019-20.

How were the candidates selected for the Ehsaas Program Undergraduate Scholarships? – An awards committee had been set for provisional decisions based on applications and documents received and recommended them for ratification by the program steering committee.

She said with fifty percent girls’ inclusion in these scholarships, Pakistan would also benefit the measures in this program to tackle gender discrimination in education, which negatively impacts our nation’s health and economic growth.

The project is being overseen by the Ehsaas Scholarships Steering Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Nishtar and Chairman HEC.

Ali Zafar released his latest song ‘Mela Loot Liya’ after millions of requests were made by his fans to come up with a song for the fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The cricket-crazy fans did not seem to like the official anthem, ‘Tayar Hain’ written by Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan (Xulfi), and sung by Ali Azmat, Haroon, Asim Azhar, and Arif Lohar.

Zafar asked his fans on social media to become a part of the video and showcase their talent as he plans to feature the best entries in his upcoming music video.

Within a week’s time, Zafar released his music video and twitter is not impressed.

Ali Zafar was not hired by the cricket league after the harassment case was filed against him by musician Meesha Shafi previously.

PSL didn't hire Ali Zafar to sing the official song this time and since then he is behaving like a Grade 5 spoilt child who is in desperate need for attention from the whole class or he ain't going to eat his lunch. No grace, no dignity, no character. Complete asshole.

Yes, bad days are gone now and with the improved law and order situation in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the authorities have announced to reopen the historic Sunheri Masjid (Golden Mosque) for women so they can offer their congregation prayers.

Moreover, for women to get a clear go-ahead, the authorities have also put up a banner outside the mosque which reads, “that women are now welcomed to offer Friday prayer at Sunheri Masjid”.

What led to its closure?

More than two decades ago, terrorist attacks were on the rise and dozens of attacks took place near the mosque which led to the authorities closing it down for women.

Back in 2016, 16 people were killed and dozens wounded when a powerful bomb went off as the bus carrying mostly government employees past by the mosque in the crowded marketplace of Saddar.

The move is being extremely praised a step to discourage the patriarchal nature of spaces like mosques and ”hujras” (a room where guests are entertained in Pashtun areas of Pakistan) from where women are excluded.

Standard Chartered Reports Outstanding Growth Of 42.51% After Tax Increased!

KARACHI, 28 February 2019 – Standard Chartered Bank (Pakistan) Limited, the country’s largest and oldest international bank, today announced its Annual Results for 2019.

The Bank had a record year of performance in 2019 and delivered a Profit before tax of PKR27.2 billion, which is 47per cent higher than last year. Profit after tax registered a growth of 43per cent to close at PKR16 billion; the highest ever since its incorporation.

A strong and diversified business performance drove an all-time high income of PKR39.1 billion; a growth of 37per cent YoY. Operating expenses were well controlled with an increase of only 2per cent YoY, well below the country inflation rate, resulting in all-time low cost to income ratio of 30per cent.

All businesses have positive momentum in client income which grew 31per cent year on year with strong growth in underlying drivers. Momentum in advances (net) continues with 29per cent growth since the start of the year. This was the result of a targeted strategy to leverage our brand, client relationships and strong global network in building profitable and high-quality portfolios.

The Bank continued to maintain its leadership in low-cost deposits with CASA to Deposits ratio of 93per cent despite strong competition. Total deposits recorded a growth of 10per cent, with CASA growing by 8per cent in 2019.

The bank won several awards and accolades in the year including “Best Commercial Bank” by Management Association of Pakistan, “Best Foreign Bank in Pakistan” by Finance Asia, “Best International Bank” by Asia Money and “Best Islamic Bank” by The Banker Magazine.

During 2019, the Bank contributed around PKR18.6 billion to the national exchequer in lieu of direct income taxes, as an agent of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and on account of FED / Provincial Sales Taxes.

For the year 2019, the Board of Directors have recommended a final cash dividend of 17.5per cent (PKR1.75 per share). This is in addition to the 12.5percent (PKR1.25 per share) interim cash dividend announced during the year; thereby taking the total dividend payout to a record high of 30per cent (PKR3.00 per share).

Commenting on the results, Mr. Shazad Dada, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank (Pakistan) Limited said,

Omega 3 Supplements Have Little or no Benefit for Heart Health

Led by the University of East Anglia, the new study analyzed the results of 79 randomized trials involving a total of 112,059 people — some healthy and some with existing conditions — who lived across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.

The studies investigated the effects of consuming additional omega 3 fat compared to usual or lower levels of omega 3 on diseases of the heart and circulation, with participants asked to either increase their omega 3 fats or to maintain their usual intake of fat for at least one year. Many studies compared long-chain omega 3 supplements in a capsule form to a dummy pill, with only a few assessing whole fish intake.

Small amounts of omega 3 fats are essential for good health, with the main types of omega 3 fatty acids including alphalinolenic acid (ALA), normally found in plant foods such as nuts and seeds, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both of which are collectively called long chain omega 3 fats and are naturally found in fatty fish and fish oils including cod liver oil.

Although increasing our consumption of omega 3 fats is widely promoted in order to protect against heart disease, the researchers found that increasing long-chain omega 3 through either food or supplementation provides little, if any benefit, on most most health outcomes investigated in the study. This includes risk of death from any cause, with the team finding little difference between the two groups — the risk of death from any cause was 8.8% in people who had increased their intake of omega 3 fats, compared with 9% in people in the control groups.

In addition, upping intake of long-chain omega 3 fats (including EPA and DHA) mainly through supplements also made little or no difference to the risk of cardiovascular events, coronary heart deaths, coronary heart disease events, stroke or heart irregularities. However, eating more ALA was found to probably reduce the risk of heart irregularities from 3.3 percent to 2.6 percent.

Long-chain omega 3 fats also appeared to reduce some blood fats and triglycerides — which can help protect against heart disease — although they also lowered levels of HDL cholesterol, known as the “good” cholesterol, which could increase the risk of heart disease.

Commenting on the findings, Cochrane lead author, Dr. Lee Hooper said, “We can be confident in the findings of this review which go against the popular belief that long-chain omega 3 supplements protect the heart. This large systematic review included information from many thousands of people over long periods. Despite all this information, we don’t see protective effects.”

“On the other hand, while oily fish is a healthy food, it is unclear from the small number of trials whether eating more oily fish is protective of our hearts.”

The results will be published online in the Cochrane Library.

Coronavirus Outbreak: Thermal Scanners Installed By CAA At Islamabad Airport

Shortly after the initial two cases of coronavirus reported in the country, State Minister for Health Dr. Zafar Mirza has ensured that the contagious infection will not take a form of outburst in Pakistan.

Authorities have already taken all the measures required to regulate the spread of highly contagious disease, Dr. Mirza added. “There is no need to create panic. We need to take precautions and fulfill our responsibilities to stop the spread of novel virus.”

Following the case of the virus, thermal scanners have been operationalized at Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore and Karachi airports and are being installed at all points of entries to Pakistan.

Compared to a thermal gun, the automatic scanner can filter passengers in lesser duration of time.

The scanner can detect indications of flu and fever with more precision. Recently, passengers were being scanned manually using thermal guns which consumed more time.

Some of the signs of the coronavirus are identical to those of the flu, such as coughing and fever. Breathing problems and in some drastic cases organ failure have also been reported.

Preventive measures encompass washing hands with soap and water daily, covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, fully cooking meat and eggs and avoiding crowded areas and contact with those exhibiting signs of the ailment.

In Punjab, the director-general of health services has supervised the administrations to call upon Chinese settlements and camps to screen them for indications of the recent infection.

Around 2,800 people have succumbed to the virus around the world, with most fatalities in China, the virus’ hub.
