India suspended bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai attacks but the two teams continue to play each other in international tournaments, including the Champions Trophy final in England last year.

This year’s Asia Cup was originally set to be held in India but was shifted to the United Arab Emirates because of strained relations between New Delhi and Islamabad.

The biennial tournament will begin September 15 in with Sri Lanka taking on Bangladesh in the opener, the ICC said.

Hum TV Breaks Silence Over Awards Controversy

Hum style awards 2018

HUM TV has landed itself in a major controversy by scheduling its coveted HUM Style Awards 2018 during the Election week.

The ceremony is being held in Toronto, Canada this Saturday. Consequently, the crème de la crème of Pakistani stars is currently overseas to prepare for the show, unable to cast their vote in the elections.

Farhan Saeed was the first to lash out at stars like Mahira Khan, Kubra Khan, Yasir Hussain and Hania Aamir who flew out of Pakistan right before elections.

Joining him was Imran Abbas who expressed his remorse towards all the icons who choose the award rehearsals before their nation’s future.

Never seen such an overwhelming response of voters . I witnessed people and senior citizens on wheel chairs, disabled…

Posted by Imran Abbas on Wednesday, July 25, 2018

Social media was bound to react on the crucial matter and fans are roasting their favorite stars for ‘pretending to be patriotic’.

An online petition has also kick-started to boycott the channel along with its upcoming award show.

Following the backlash, HUM TV has finally broken the silence and release a statement to clarify the whole issue.

The channel made it clear that the date for Hum Style Awards 2018 was decided months back and an event so grand cannot be canceled.

HUM assured in the statement that the award gala will portray the soft image of Pakistan on a global scale.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Campaigns: Brands on Toes

FIFA World Cup 2018 finally ended with exquisite team performance, courage, resilience, sad ending for Croatia and a powerful win for France.

The underdogs joining the finals already won the hearts of the world. They showed true team spirit and proved that one doesn’t require only star performers to go ahead and succeed but its team spirit, leadership and collective effort which helps you reach the horizons. The world cup surely gave a lot of lessons to us corporates as well.

The Croatian Fairytale ended yet won hearts of all!

Though Pakistan couldn’t qualify and participate in the World Cup, still the beautiful game with its charm had eyes of Pakistanis stuck on the sports channels.

Be it post or pre-match hype, football match analysis was part of discussions among students and professionals. Football fever was just around everywhere. Thinking about the notes, Pakistani brands actively came up with campaigns pertaining to the world cup 2018 which was a positive sign.

In the world full of clutter where brands are active in bombarding and trying to catch the impressions of TG, World Cup 2018 was a forum where brands could get automatic engagement with target audience.

Below are some creative executions which caught my attention and for which I would like to write about.

The Coca-Cola Anthem #WC2018

https://youtu.be/QFRipVG_03M

Coca-Cola partnered with Jason Derulo and came up with the official anthem. Multiple adapts of anthem were made in collaboration with local stars of various countries being an international campaign.

Coke Studio having a strong association in Pakistan did a good move by getting QB on board for the Pakistani version “Chak dey Phaddey”. The brand played on established equity and fame of Coke Studio, henceforth the content was relevant.

A part of the Pakistani version video was shot in Pakistan and it featured Pakistani superstars along with QB who was the lead singer.

As part of the campaign the World Cup trophy tour was organized by Coca-Cola and Pakistan was among those 51 countries. The overall campaign created pre-hype of the World Cup and created a sort of festivity around the world. FIFA’s fictional Alex Hunter was made Coke’s first virtual brand ambassador as well.

https://youtu.be/QFRipVG_03M

#DhakDhakGoal

https://youtu.be/BNEnmB5gVq0

Out of all other local brands, EBM came up with a very energetic and catchy song. The campaign was live on Digital, ATL, Radio and OOH. The hashtag was taken to the international level to Russia with digital amplification.

Talking about the hashtag of the campaign #DhakDhakGoal gave a very youthful and energetic feel.

Kudos to the team for coming up with a very good song and video with local stars. The creative billboards added to the flavor of the campaign. However, a lot more could have been done to integrate the brand image with instant energy.

In the coming days, activations can be done to give endless ripples to the excellent communication by the brand and make the strong association with sports also.

To sum it up, its great to see brands staying active in foreseeing the trends to engage with the target audience. Brands which capitalize on such events with local interest get ahead of the game by making themselves stand out among the tough competition.

China Port: Karachi’s Latest Attraction Ruined by Citizens [View Images]

Pakistan is praised for its natural beauty which encourages tourists to come from all over the world to experience it first hand at least once in their lifetime. From spring to forests, mountains to valleys and gorges, the nation has it all.

Recently, a new attraction caught the attention of Karachiites called ‘China Port’.

Unfortunately, within mere weeks of its discovery, the beautiful tetra-pod shaped rocks were covered with pan peeks and the sea littered with filthy trash.

Courtesy: Ali Farooq

China Port’s condition makes us stop for a minute and ask ourselves, do we deserve such amazing and mesmerising sceneries and chill spots in the first place? Is there anything at all which we leave unharmed for our future generations?

China Port has Become Karachi’s New Go-To Destination

We have cut down the majority of the trees, have trash piles on every street, have less fish and more trash in our water.

We learn from history that our Prophet and his followers used to keep themselves and their surroundings clean because, in the Holy Quran, Allah himself tells his people that he loves cleanliness.

Being an Islamic nation, following his preachings, why are we treating our country like a trash can when it has amazing site seeing locations like Astola Island, Nathia Gali, Kund Malir, Katas Raj and more.

Today, let’s take a pledge and vow to keep our city and our country ‘pak saaf’ for a better and brighter future for our children and change the ‘pan khane wala Karachi’ image for good.

PSL 4: Three Pakistani Cities to Host the Matches!

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wants to bring at least half the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 4 matches to the home country.

According to The News, one of the venues for the next season will be Pindi Stadium as the 3rd venue.

PSL witnessed its first final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, followed by Karachi’s National Stadium.

As of now, the board is planning on constructing a new building at the stadium which will be capable to accommodate as per needed capacity.

PCB & UAE Cricket Board Lock Mutual Agreement

The stadium can entertain 25,000 individuals and was built in 1992. It hosted its first one-day game the same year.

The first Test match there was played in 1993. A PCB official also shared that the construction of the stadium was also part of the domestic development plan.

Earlier, the board was considering Malaysia as a second-home ground to host PSL 4 matches as it would be comparatively cheaper than UAE.

The board was also considering the option of hosting all matches in Pakistan, however, the franchises opposed to the decision.

On the other hand, owner of Quetta Gladiators Nadeem Omar has requested the PCB to consider Quetta as a host city for the upcoming season.

Ozil Leaves Germany’s Natiknal Football Team After ‘Racism’ as Turkey Applauds

Mesut Ozil on Monday was warmly applauded by Turkey but faced uproar at home in Germany after announcing he was quitting the German national football team, lambasting “racism” over criticism for the side’s World Cup debacle.

Ozil, who has Turkish roots but was born in Germany, had been under fire since posing for a controversial photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May which sparked questions about his loyalty to Germany’s squad ahead of the tournament in Russia.

“It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at international level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect,” he said in a statement on social media channels on Sunday.

Ozil, 29, said he had been unfairly blamed in Germany for the side’s shock group stage exit at the World Cup.

He insisted he was true to both his Turkish and German origins and did not intend to make a political statement by appearing with Erdogan a month ahead of elections in Turkey.

“I have two hearts, one German and one Turkish,” said Ozil.

The Turkish government of Erdogan, who has championed a campaign against what Ankara sees as growing Islamophobia in Europe, hailed Ozil’s move.

“I congratulate Mesut Ozil who by leaving the national team has scored the most beautiful goal against the virus of fascism,” Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul wrote on Twitter.

Turkey’s Sports Minister Mehmet Kasapoglu, like Gul posting the picture of a smiling Ozil with Erdogan, added: “We sincerely support the honourable stance that our brother Mesut Ozil has taken”.

– ‘Immigrant when we lose’ –

The Arsenal midfielder blamed the German Football Federation (DFB) for failing to defend him against his most strident critics, lashing out at “mistreatment” in particular from DFB President Reinhard Grindel.

He said that Grindel and Germany coach Joachim Loew had asked him to give a “joint statement to end all the talk and set the record straight” over the picture with Erdogan.

“Whilst I attempted to explain to Grindel my heritage, ancestry and therefore reasoning behind the photo, he was far more interested in speaking about his own political views and belittling my opinion.”

“I will no longer stand for being a scapegoat for his (Grindel’s) incompetence and inability to do his job properly,” he said.

“In the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose.”

Fellow German international Ilkay Gundogan, born in Germany to Turkish parents, was also present at the London meeting with Erdogan in May on the president’s visit to Britain, as well as striker Cenk Tosun of Everton who was born in Germany but represents Turkey.

The photo, which was published on the presidential website and the Twitter feed of the ruling party, came just before the June 24 polls Erdogan won to claim sweeping new powers.

Ozil said that despite the timing of the picture “it wasn’t about politics or elections, it was about me respecting the highest office of my family’s country”.

“My job is a football player and not a politician, and our meeting was not an endorsement of any policies,” Ozil added.

Germany is home to more than three million people of Turkish origin.

Manchester City midfielder Gundogan presented Erdogan with a signed club shirt on which he had written “to my president”.

The two players were booed by German fans in pre-World Cup friendlies over their appearance with the Turkish strongman, and Ozil said Sunday that he and his family had received threats.

– ‘Crosses a line’ –

Ozil said he could abide criticism of his performance on the pitch but not when it was linked to his ethnic background.

“If a newspaper or pundit finds fault in a game I play in, then I can accept this,” he said.

“But what I can’t accept are German media outlets repeatedly blaming my dual-heritage and a simple picture for a bad World Cup on behalf of an entire squad,” he added, calling it “right-wing propaganda”.

“This crosses a personal line that should never be crossed, as newspapers try to turn the nation of Germany against me.”

He also furiously denounced disparaging remarks by former captain Lothar Matthaeus, who he noted “met with another world leader a few days back and received almost no media criticism” in an apparent reference to an appearance with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rock the Vote: Pakistani Political Music Keeps the Party Going

As the crowd swells with anticipation for their leader Shahbaz Sharif’s arrival a DJ blares the anthem “Respect the vote”, while supporters chant slogans and sway to the synth-driven dance track.

“We are enjoying it a lot,” shouts Nauman Khan over the ear-splitting volume as he dances with friends at the rally in Punjab province, days ahead of Pakistan’s national elections.

“We really like the songs of Nawaz Sharif,” he screams, referring to Shahbaz’s brother, the jailed former premier who continues to inspire his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supporters from behind bars.

Pakistani political rallies have been transformed in recent years to festive blowouts, designed to entertain as much as inspiring supporters to vote.

The formula was first perfected by Asif Butt — better known by his stage persona DJ Butt — an erstwhile wedding DJ who first shot to fame when he played a rally for cricketer-turned-opposition leader Imran Khan in 2011.

It was there that the Lahore-based DJ began to perfect his craft, playing contemporary songs to warm up the crowd and musical interludes to the speeches on stage — injecting some dramatic theatre into long stretches of oratory.

“Imran Khan is a quick learner. He understood quickly where he had to pause for music and where he should continue speaking,” says Butt.

The mashup was a hit, paving the way for continued collaboration between Butt and Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) during the 2013 election season as the party reached out to younger and urbaner voters.

Political parties in Pakistan have used music as a way of spreading slogans and unifying supporters since the rise of pop music in the late 1980s, following the end of a military dictatorship.

But increasingly, and thanks to DJs like Butt, the rhythms of political rallies are filling a vital space in the deeply conservative Islamic country, providing the music-obsessed masses with a space to dance and cut loose.

– Play to the crowd –

Butt’s career resembles that of an ambitious upstart in the country’s chaotic political landscape.

He has played to crowds numbering tens of thousands, spent time in jail, and even manned the decks during a riot as police cracked down on a PTI protest with batons and tear gas.

Butt’s blueprint for success is simple: play to the crowd.

In Punjab, he belts out tunes to suit the province’s homegrown Bhangra dance style. In the rural northwest, he sticks to traditional folk tunes, while in urban areas the playlist is exclusively pop.

“DJ Butt and the PTI are the spiritual heads of this,” says pop culture writer Ahmer Naqvi on music’s shaping of Pakistani politics.

His success has since sparked a cottage industry, with political parties across the country hiring DJs on the campaign trail to attract voters.

At a PTI rally in Lahore, portions of the crowd resemble a mosh pit as men spin in circles, hands flailing in response to deafening political anthems.

“The younger generation likes music at Imran Khan’s rallies because there is enthusiasm and fervour in it,” says PTI supporter Muhammad Ali.

“And there’s DJs there and the music is good.”

But not all are fans.

Back in Punjab province’s Pindi Gheb, Sharif supporter Abdul Ghaffar slams the “singing and dancing” witnessed at Imran Khan’s rallies for involving both men and women.

“We don’t have anything like dancing by women in our public meetings,” he scoffs.

– ‘Arrow to the heart’ –

For those upset with the ways of the young, there are still the classic songs of old, with the lyrics largely centred on the personalities of party leaders.

“Arrow to the heart”, an ode to the late former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), remains the gold standard for political anthems in the eyes of many.

“That bassline could bring down empires. It’s so powerful,” says pop culture writer Naqvi of the song’s timelessness.

“I don’t know what is so special in this song but there is something that still attracts party leaders and workers alike,” says Shabana Noshi, who provided vocals on the now iconic track.

Since being recorded almost 30 years ago, the song has outgrown its political mandate and is now a staple at weddings in southern Pakistan’s Sindh province, where the PPP draws its support, Noshi says.

And for the faithful, a PPP rally is not complete without the song.

“No rally during the elections could be successful if the party song is not played on big speakers,” says PPP supporter Naqash Saeed in Karachi.

“Whenever it is played my partisanship gets stronger.”

Pakistan-Assembled Hyundai Cars to Hit the Streets in 2020

Pakistan is gearing up to welcome locally assembled Hyundai cars by March 2020. According to a company official, the brand wants to expand their business in South Asia’s second-largest economy.

“The company plans to produce 7,000 units in its first year,” – Aamir Saleemi, COO FIEDMC

While giving an interview to Express Tribune, Saleemi added “the Japanese-dominated industry is set to see a transformation. Hyundai cars will roll out in March 2020.” The manufacturer has teamed up with Nishat Pakistan to bring the brand home.

Two New Automakers Are Coming to Pakistan!

“This will create healthy competition, provide jobs and bring much-needed investment in other relevant sectors.

“The incentives and concessions offered under the auto policy have created a favourable environment.” As of now, Hyundai has invested $150 million as a welcome sign for Pakistan.

Previously, Hyundai operated in Pakistan during the Musharraf era. Unfortunately for the brand, stiff local and foreign competition and an open-import policy along with financial problems faced by its local partners forced it to exit the market.

Elections 2018: Donkey Tortured by Political Supporters Dies!

Update: Hero, the name given to the brave donkey who was tortured to near death a couple of days ago has scuffled to his injuries. The animal was found by a passerby who alerted and immediately handed him over to Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation.

The mule was found with a broken nose, who was also punched in the abdomen and rammed with a car several times after being roped to a lamp post. The hooligans responsible were targeting PLM-N to degrade them after Imran Khan had addressed the rivals as ‘Donkeys’.

ACF’s Facebook page reads;

Our Hero just passed away.

He was doing a lot better until yesterday, he managed to stand up on his own, eat powdered food although he had a broken jaw, and drink water on his own. He had been on IV drips, multivitamins and antibiotics. His external wounds were healing. He was just skin and bones and unbelievably weak and malnourished, like he was starved for days. And constipated at the same time. He had colic that can be fatal in donkeys although his seemed to be getting better.

We kept his temperature under control, massaged and cuddled him to calm down him as he would try take faltering steps, distressed, suffering from post traumatic stress, his heart pounding a mile a minute.

However, this morning, his blood pressure was too high, his temperature kept fluctuating hence he was under constant observation, he started bleeding from his nose and he couldn’t breathe properly anymore.

His internal injuries due to the violence he faced, were too much for him to bear.

He just saw a week of happiness, peace and love with us, and we saw this beautiful, intelligent personality who was abused and tortured for absolutely no reason, for no fault of his own.

Hero should never had suffered for even a moment in life. Hero was the epitome of purity and innocence. Shame on us for doing this to him and not being able to curtail this menace of torture and abuse of animals and human beings alike. We are to be blamed for not bothering to raise our voices for the most ignored, neglected and tortured inhabitants of our society.

We have to think and act upon this, there cannot be and should not be more Heroes who suffer at the hands of humans.

With Elections 2018 just a few days away, all political parties have maximized all presentations whether it be on social media, via SMS carriers or rallies.

While on one hand, Pakistanis are showing their love and support for their leaders, there are some to have stooped low to an unbelievable level, which is sick, disgusting, and shameful.

A hate crime in which an innocent creature was mercilessly beaten just to degrade another political party was taken place which has gone viral on social media.

Not only has it left thousands heart-broken, it has also opened eyes as to how we have now actually lost all our humanity and are no more God-fearing.

A donkey was found with a broken nose, who was also punched in the abdomen and rammed with a car several times after being roped to a lamp post. The hooligans responsible also wrote the word “a**” to describe their rivals on the animal’s body.

The poor thing could barely stand on its feet when it was found as it had collapsed from the nightmare. The animal was immediately handed over to Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation (ACF) which is known for their work in rescuing abandoned and injured animals.

ACF’s management took it to Facebook to share their two cents. They expressed how furious and intimidating this act is and how mankind can be so cruel. ACF described the condition of the little animal when they arrived at the location.

Elections 2018: Careem Apologies for Mocking Political Parties

“The donkey has multiple wounds, all fresh from the beatings, punches, and kicks he endured.

The Wound near his rear was an old abscess which burst probably when he collapsed. His nostrils have been ripped apart and his face was bleeding from all the wounds.

There are no signs of internal injury thus far.

He is not eating much and his body is still stiff yet shaking in fear. His wounds have been cleaned and he has been given painkillers. He is drinking water on his own.

The girls at the shelter are sitting with him, hugging him, crying with him. He winces at any touch because he thinks each one will hurt.

Is this what our country has come to? Or is this what it’s always been? And social media and a little bit of animal welfare have now highlighted what we always were and are. Monsters.”

Elections are a time for Pakistanis to unite with one another. A time when there is no Shia, No Sunni, No Sikh or Hindu or Christian, but everyone is a Pakistani who respects one another’s political views and together stands up for the rights we deserve, the rights we are born with.

Instead of fighting, disrespecting one another, hurting people and innocent animals, we should think about coming together to solve water disputes, end load shedding, take up environmental challenges seriously, focus on the education system, and come together to end corruption for good.

This year, vote for our future generations, vote to bring back Quaid-e-Azam’s Pakistan, not for power, money, or fake promises. It’s now or never, the decision and fate of your country is in your hands!
