PTCL at Forefront to Serve Enterprises & Consumers in Pakistan

It seems that for years we have talked about how Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is our country’s largest ICT company.

For most people, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about PTCL is just ‘telephone’ and ‘internet’.

The PTCL brand prides itself on being the carrier of carriers that handles most of the internet traffic in the country.

But maybe instead of focusing on how many submarine consortiums it has under its belt, we can dig deeper to everything that goes towards making this company the telecom giant that it actually is.

There is one side of this organization that we all know; the Business-to-Consumer side that caters to customers and provides services like landline, broadband, SmartTV, along with other products.

However, there is another side to PTCL that we don’t know much about; the Business-to-Business side, which caters to the needs of corporate organizations that most of us are dependent on.

Looking at PTCL’s corporate aspect through the recently launched ad shows that the organization is ultimately catering to every single person in the country, whether directly through its products and services, or indirectly by facilitating corporations like banks, government institutions. This is possible because ‘PTCL bana un sab ka aitebar, jin pay hay apko aitebar’.

PTCL

As per banking regulations set in Pakistan, all banks are required to have security and backup connectivity where PTCL plays a pivotal role. The company provides security surveillance, along with secured hosting services to all the major banks, ensuring that all measures are in place for data sensitivity and precautions in case of any breach.

Most of these services fall under the Managed Services portfolio, which provides savings to small and large corporations while investing in IT infrastructure that allows the company to run their ICT operations.

Some of the services include Managed Surveillance, Managed Wi-Fi, Managed WAN & Managed DDoS and many other similar products.

Did you also know that PTCL is the exclusive connectivity provider at airports across Pakistan? Most of the stations including air communication controller & pilot communication services among others are provided through corporate connectivity. Furthermore, the company also extends its support in terms of connectivity infrastructure & services.

Aside from this, they provide connectivity & internet services to the national airline of Pakistan at their head office in Karachi, along with booking & airport offices across Pakistan.

The company also gives multiple streams of services to the national railways of Pakistan, who utilize remote connectivity between the locations for ticket issuance, cancellation, booking & reservations which is centrally connected and is done on real-time basis.

Behind the scenes, the company also provides various services to telecom companies as it is a member of four international submarine cable consortium and handles majority of the data traffic coming in and going out of Pakistan. Recently, they entered into a strategic partnership with Zong for network expansion, through provision of PTCL’s VSAT services in remote and far-flung areas of Pakistan.

Non-profit organizations are also availing PTCL telecom services, where people can get in touch for either providing support or getting support. Similarly, the company is engaged in extending services to universities in far flung areas, where other means of connectivity are not available.

ptcl

In Pakistan, the national company is a pioneer in introducing Cloud infrastructure and services. The company implemented a local Cloud Infrastructure back in 2017 as part of its commitment to provide latest technology and innovation in local market.

PTCL Smart Cloud is currently the country’s only SDN (Software Defined Network) enabled cloud built on Rated-3 certified Data Centers to provide service solutions optimized for business growth.

All data on the Cloud is hosted within the country for minimal latency and optimal performance. This service enables customers to build customized virtual servers & networks according to their own needs and requirements.

The Cloud portfolio includes Virtual Data Center, which is the ideal solution for optimal user control with maximum security control, Virtual Private Server, a virtual server configuration that meets customer specific needs, Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS), to maximize business continuity for enhanced resilience, and Backup as a Service (BaaS), to provide optimal security for businesses.

ptcl

Currently, PTCL has four Data Centers, which provide digital services, hosting of mission-critical services, racks’, networking devices & other Data Center computing equipment ensuring a cost-effective and compact environment to meet the requirement of enterprise customers.

The facilities allow enterprise customers to move their essential IT/Telecom infrastructure into PTCL Data Centers, conveniently located in major cities of the country with the highest level of security, resilience, and flexibility. This helps companies to reduce their cost, increase the business value of IT and make a realistically manageable footprint.

PTCL has existed since the inception of Pakistan, connecting the entire nation from Khyber to Karachi and Gilgit to Gwadar. Not only is it serving end consumers, but the company is at the forefront of connectivity and ICT related services because of its continuous commitment to technology and innovation.

Not too long ago, a report was published which suggested that street crime in Karachi had declined to a remarkable extent.

Here is what the report said:

According to the World Crime Index Comparison released by Numbeo, Karachi has improved its ranking from 2012-2018. In a span of seven years, Karachi seems to have performed even better on the World Crime Index by jumping down from rank 6th to 70th.

P2G Payments Assist in Spreading Financial Inclusion

jazzcash

People with access to a formal financial account with a bank or on a mobile money application are considered to be financially included. These lucky individuals can avail loans and insurance, safeguard their savings and safely and conveniently transfer money.

Several studies highlight that inclusion could improve income and increase savings thus enabling the previously underserved to invest in necessities such as healthcare, education, food, growing their business, and managing financial risk.

Globally, as per World Bank 2017 data, close to 69 percent of the world population is financially included.  But in Pakistan, this number alarmingly stands at 21 percent. In 2015, the State Bank of Pakistan, under its National Financial Inclusion Strategy, set out on an ambitious journey to ensure 50% of Pakistani adults are banked by 2020.  As 2019 draws to a close, it is easy to say this target now seems unattainable.

In a country with more than 160 million mobile phone users, it seems like enough has not been done to address this issue. One impediment to achieving the inclusion target is trust. Apart from major urban centers, Pakistanis usually do not trust financial institutions. Moreover, given lack of education in towns and rural setups being a hindrance in proper mobile phone usage, most adults prefer to transfer or receive money through mobile money agents instead of setting up their own mobile money accounts.

Building trust is a long-term challenge, but improving financial services providers’ capacity and ambition to reach large scale, especially with mobile wallet account ownership, can be addressed in the shorter term; Ghana is a strong success story for this tactic.

Exponential growth in Ghana’s financial inclusion numbers – from 40% in 2014 to 58% in 2017 – was powered solely by mobile banking; in comparison Pakistan’s financial inclusion grew just 8 percentage points in the same period.

Ghana’s success was strongly aided by policy makers that kept an open mind by allowing new players to participate in the provision of financial services and providing space for experimentation and forming person-to-government (P2G) mobile payment flows to encourage usage.

In Pakistan, regulators, post 2015, have been supportive of mobile money institutions, but there is a real lack of P2G payment via mobile concept.

In February 2016, JazzCash (then Mobicash) launched a mobile passport payment product in partnership with the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGI&P) and the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP).

The agreement for this product was signed with DGI&P first and shared with the State Bank of Pakistan.  DGI&P also got a written approval from Ministry of Interior after which the contract between NBP and DG Passports was signed at NADRA HQ in the presence of then Interior Minister.

The initiative aimed to increase customer satisfaction by reducing the time it takes to submit a passport application and increase operational efficiency by reducing the number of people queuing at NBP branches and passport centres.

An effective pilot solution made use of by many in the twin cities – close to 15,000 monthly transactions – was soon scaled-up nationwide through other mobile banking services e.g. Easypaisa and UPaisa.

Passport fee service became the first nationwide P2G service and aided in putting an end to corruption both within the government and the rackets that operated privately. This digital service quickly become user heavy in various cities, as it offered convenience to the users, who no longer had to stand in long queues to pay their passport fee. This led to an increased number of empowered mobile money users and encouraged similar public-private partnerships for other government services.

However, at the start of 2019, this service was abruptly brought to a standstill. The necessary protocols remained unarticulated by the government and rolled back the impact the service aimed to create. The opportunity cost to both the government and society is huge.

The abrupt closure of this effective payment solution has affected the common folk and dedicated internal passport fee service teams and has also shaken the confidence of mobile banking institutions working to forge similar partnerships to facilitate P2G payments. Currently there are other mandates like KPK services commission, Islamabad Traffic Police and Karachi Police Department, where JazzCash and Easypaisa are following a similar arrangement.

It is imperative to understand that digitizing P2G payments is the key in nudging the majority of the 160 million mobile users towards mobile banking channels, thus improving on the country’s miserable financial inclusion figures. Such a move also holds significant benefits for governments, consumers and businesses, in the form of alleviated costs, greater convenience and overall safety of transactions.

The Pakistan government’s Vision 2025 includes e-governance, e-commerce and e-services showcasing a strong affinity towards digitizing P2G payments, but to achieve its goals, there needs to be a greater element of trust and maneuverability amongst key government departments and the mobile financial players in the market.

SHOOTING CAMPAIGN

Pakistanis do not often get to explore their potential when it comes to sports, especially women.

The issue lies in both, lack of resources and lack of a proper system.

Chitral's Famous Plane Restaurant

After a short shutdown, the popular Chitral plane restaurant has relaunched and is operational once again.

The plane is a former Pakistan International Airline’s (PIA) Fokker F27 48-seater aircraft that crash-landed on June 16th, 2004 at Chitral Airport.

A retired PIA pilot bought the decommissioned aircraft and turned it into a café offering a pleasant dining experience for all age groups.

While the restaurant gained great popularity, the authorities were not too impressed and the eatery was sealed by Assistant Commissioner Alamgir on the orders of Deputy Commissioner Lower Chitral, Khurshid Alam Mehsud.

The step was taken because of the restaurant was violating airport safety standards. Objections were raised by the Airport Manager Chitral as well, asking to relocate terming it dangerous for regular flight operations.

The owner of the restaurant has now been permitted to run his restaurant again.

Government to Make Drug Test Mandatory for Teachers & Students in Islamabad

drug test

Dawn published a report on students’ drug use in Islamabad in March 2019.

When interviewed, here’s what an Islamabadi Bachelors student had to say on the matter:

“I think it is unfair that everyone is tested and that all drugs are treated the same. Many of my friends and I do weed. It’s not addictive, it doesn’t incapacitate you, it’s not expensive, and it’s harmless. To me, it’s ridiculous that cigarettes are legal and weed is not. We like to smoke after a particularly difficult exam or just when we’re hanging out. What harm is it doing anyone,”

In a session of the Senate Standing Committee on Narcotics Control held yesterday, the government revealed plans to make drug tests mandatory for students and school staff in Islamabad.

Shehryar Afridi holds the honor of being Minister of State for Narcotics Control.

Kimono Hijabs for Muslim Women Now Being Made by a Japanese Company!

Afridi made himself very clear that the government’s plans to determine legislation and punishment for possession and distribution of crystal methamphetamine or ice are in process.

Mentioning that the ministry had a collection of data of “drug dealers and money launderers” from over 250 international law enforcement agencies, the minister claimed that former Interpol president Ronald Robin and the United Arab Emirates authorities were seeking Pakistan’s help on the matter.

He also made it clear that anybody responsible for encouraging or introducing the youth to drugs will have to face consequences, regardless of their background or political holding.

Amjad Javed Saleemi, Narcotics Control Secretary told the Senate committee about the system that helps them track drug peddlers and their facilitators through a record they maintain of criminal entities involved in the narcotics trade.

On the other hand, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) conducted the last comprehensive survey of drug use in Pakistan in 2013, according to which found that drug use was more common among those aged between 25 to 39 than 15 to 24 — the age bracket these legislations target.

“Prime Minister [Imran Khan] I just like to get this message through to you, I have been following your leadership and I wished I had the words of Shakespeare and Winston Churchill to give you the credit that you deserve,” he said in the video message.

“I’m so proud of you for what you’re doing for your region. May Allah be with you all the time! God bless my friend. You are my hero as Nelson Mandela was…,” the retired golfer added.

May strength be with you! I know you’ve got many many challenges that you would need at least two years, I would imagine, to get your message across. But until then Allah-o-Akbar, -he concluded

Gary is regarded as one of the all-time great golf players and holds the record for winning several major golf championships.

He was the first non-American to win all the four majors in his career, known as the career grand slam.

This message was followed by Imran Khan’s outstanding speech at the 74th United Nations General Assembly session, which set new records of popularity.

Imran Khan to Merge Modern & Religious Education for All Pakistani Students

Kimono Hijabs for Muslim Women Now Being Made by a Japanese Company!

Kimono Hijab

In 2016, more than 20 million tourists visited Japan and among them, Muslim tourists have become more common nowadays.

As such, the increasing population growth of Muslims in future is likely to have a strong impact on the global community and economy, especially in Asia, which is the home to 70% of Muslims in the world.

Yumeyakata, a Japanese kimono rental store, has decided to take advantage of that by creating wagara hijabs that cater to needs of Muslim women in Japan.

These colorful kimono-inspired, patterned hijabs are the latest hit with tourists in Kyoto, as fashion-conscious Muslim women look to fully embrace local culture during their Japanese holidays.

The development of this line of product is owed to Shahnaz Daphne, a 25-year-old Indonesian woman who joined the company in 2017.

The store lets Muslim women rent out kimonos along with Yumeyakata’s wagara hijabs that match their wide selection of traditional Japanese clothes for a special price of 300 yen.

These hijabs are specifically designed to match and blend with the designs of the kimono.

Currently, Yumeyakata offers around 20 different designs of wagara hijabs in their lineup store iincluding the sakura (cherry blossom) and yukiwa (snow ring). They plan to expand their collection to 50 designs suited for the summer season along with more variety of material, too.

Imran Khan to Merge Modern & Religious Education for All Pakistani Students

Imran Khan

In an address at a prize distribution ceremony held at a religious institution, PM Imran Khan talked about the importance of excelling in both kinds of education: modern and religious.

The ceremony was aimed to honour the Madrassa students who, alongside their religious education examinations, also appeared in the regular board examinations this time.

According to him, when taught the best of both worlds, Pakistani students will be better equipped to confidently do their best both nationally and internationally.

Here’s what the prime minister said:

The youth, which has a strong knowledge of both modern sciences and religion and also realizes the objective of Pakistan’s creation, can lead the country at international arena,

Khan is of the opinion that the parallel education system is a colonial system which only plays a role in deepening the divide between the citizens of Pakistan. It is quite clear to everyone that the madrassah students are limited to a certain level of education, while regular students get more exposure and opportunities.

By ending the parallel education system to allow all students to study the same curriculum and later choose a discipline to specialize in, the nation will be brought together instead of torn apart.

The objective is to rise together as a nation which is gelled with the bond of harmony and tolerance,

Khan supported his argument by emphasizing on the importance Islam places on obtaining education, not just for the purpose of becoming knowledgeable but also to benefit humanity.

The two-edged science offers mankind the invention of medicine to cure humanity and also the bomb used for destruction. The religion’s guiding power thus can help in choosing the right or wrong path,

Our children only know about the Western heroes. We must tell them about Muslim superheroes including rulers and scientists who ruled the world for 700 years,

The syllabus for this newly suggested system should be finalised by March.

What are your thoughts about this idea? Will it actually help students succeed in any way and broaden their horizons?

The Kim Jiseok Award aims to ‘discover and encourage Asian films’ and is awarded to two out of ‘approximately ten world premieres’ selected from Asian Cinema section.

The Busan International Film Festival introduced this honour two years ago to celebrate Kim Ji-seok, the founding member and deputy director of the festival, who died of a heart attack.

The trailer was released recently and since then has received a great amount of appreciation and praise. Fans and critics are impatiently waiting for the film to release.

Considering the fact that Sarmad’s debut film, Manto, was such a huge success, the audience has great expectations this time around as well.

Sarmad has touched upon a much deeper and darker narrative this time around.

Zindagi Tamasha (Circus of Life) is an intimate portrait of a family as well as a scorching political commentary on little gods on this earth who police our private passions.
