The War Between Omore and Wall’s Continues During Eid

The War

Engro Foods’ ice-cream brand Omore plans to launch three new ice-cream flavors, Vanilla and Black Currant Sauce, Caramel flavored ice-cream with toffee and a Nutty Choc-bar, to complement the Eid celebrations while Wall’s is not far behind with its news variant Orangelicious, according to the Financial Daily.

Omore, with its already established product line of 24 flavors, decided to add these flavors in order to celebrate the arrival of Eid and also to strengthen its position in the local market.

Wall’s has already placed promotional billboards on Shahrah-e-Faisal to grab attention of consumers as Eid approaches.

The war between Omore and Wall’s continues.

In the past we saw Wall’s launching Fruttare after Omore’s ice-lollies such as Jellix gained popularity and Wall’s Badami was launched to re-captures the ‘desi audience’ which was shifting to Omore due to its rich taste.

The Pakistani frozen dessert industry is expected to do good business this Eid.  With companies launching new variants and flavors, chances are that the frozen dessert industry will slightly improve in terms of performance.

Compared to last two decades, ice cream concentration and circulation has toned down. However, through such promotion, positive expectations can be made that all players in the Pakistani market industry are looking forward for reviving the ice-cream consumption.

‘Britvic’ opts for Nokia Windows Phone, deters Blackberry

Nokia Windows Phone

Britvic, a UK-based soda beverage producer is looking to associating itself with Nokia and Windows phone through promotions and positioning.

According to Nokia, company officials at Britvic claimed they are looking for a Smartphone that would be in sync with their currently existing Microsoft infrastructure.

The Nokia Lumia series, which uses the Windows operating system, would allow the employees to carrying out office transactions with ease and efficiency.

Training officials of Nokia that arrived at the company, to give a demonstration, exhibited that with Nokia Lumia series one can not only work efficiently, but is also a user-friendly phone.

Nokia plans to give away 800 pieces of Nokia Lumia 720 to employees working at Britvic.

The Lumia series was preferred over Blackberry phones that were used by the company.

As Windows Phone Central claims, this is not the first time that Nokia has been preferred in comparison to Blackberry.

This trend is expected to continue in the near future, unless some long-awaited, massive changes are made in Blackberry Smartphones.

Sex Appeal in Advertising

We’re surrounded by advertisements that desperately competes for our attention. Everywhere we look, we find ourselves drawn to images of scantily clad attractive men and women that are supposed to somehow inspire us to purchase products they endorse. Sure, this attention-getting strategy is popular. But, is it effective?

Sex appeal can increase the effectiveness of an ad or commercial because it grabs the customer’s attention. It’s human nature to be curious about sex.

A pair of long legs on a billboard is more likely to catch (and hold) a guy’s attention than a puppy, regardless of how cute it may be. Even women are drawn to them, perhaps with the desire of having goddess-like legs.

However, misuse of sex appeal can be costly. Many campaigns deemed offensive have started brand boycotts that affect sales and damage brand reputation.

Slice Katrina3

Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) has been involved in several scandals, the latest from their most recent catalog entitled “XXX Wet, Hot Summer Fun.”

On April 18, 2002, only a week after the catalog hit the stores, the Illinois State Senate passed a resolution condemning A&F’s advertising tactics. This resolution, backed by several nonprofit organizations, suggests citizens and shareholders boycott Abercrombie’s products and to take a stand against the company’s marketing strategies.

Sex in advertising has stirred controversy for many years, an advertiser must be careful when incorporating it in a campaign. Great advertisers consider not only the attention-getting power of an advertisement or commercial, but also what kind of emotional response it provokes in customers.

Studies show that the attractiveness of the endorsing model provokes positive responses. Nudity and graphic erotic content may grab consumer’s attention but doesn’t really generate positive feelings among viewers.

New Ad

In other words, advertisers must be careful to avoid the “cheap shot,” which may negatively affect a brand’s image.

To avoid that, the sexual content in advertising must be appropriate to the product category and have a proper underlying message.

Sex sells, yes, but only when used “in good taste.” As marketers we must think not only in getting customers’ attention for the short term, but also in building a brand reputation that will yield long-term results.

Unilever launches CSR initiative

unilever cst

Unilever’s philanthropic side awoke this Ramadan when they supported a healthcare related initiative regarding permanent vision loss and to support those who do cannot avail healthcare services in Pakistan.

Through this initiative, Unilever plans to disseminate information especially about vision loss.

An estimated 5.035 million people suffer from disabilities, according to the statistics brought forth by Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Statistics 2012. This number is higher than total population of some countries around the world like New Zealand or Kuwait.

Out of this, 8.2% of the population is suffering from blindness and vision loss, which is a significant number, considering Pakistan’s healthcare industry and its crippling situation.

It is expected that the consumer and the company will make use of the platform to donate and work for the improvement of these people.

Unilever took advantage of the holy month and has managed to channelize the attention and charity of people towards this noble cause.

“The Platform” to launch Pakistani Film Josh

The Platform to launch Pakistani Film Josh

The Platform, an initiative by Mr. Nadeem Mandviwala and Mr. Jarjees Seja, was launched on 7 May 2013 with the opening of the film “Josh” at Atrium Cinemas Karachi.

The Platform has been created to support emerging film makers by screening their movies. The Platform intends to celebrate and applaud the vision of the young film makers, no matter how risky, controversial or challenging it is.

Film Josh (Against the Grain) is an inspiration from the life of Perveen Saeed of Khana Ghar, a charity that provides food at a subsidized cost to the needy and poor.

Josh was premiered in Mumbai film festival and since then has been screened in various cities of America and Canada.

The film is set to release on Eid in Pakistan.

Josh was directed, produced and written by Iram Parveen BIlal who has been making short films since six years, but this is her first ever feature film.

Talking about the movie on the occasion, she said that she was honored that her film Josh was selected as the curtain raiser for The Platform.

Josh Movie2

Mr. Mandviwala stated that The Platform will only provide an opportunity to be seen to the unheard and lesser known film makers, but the content and the public will decide the fate of the film.

He also said that the lack of cinemas is one cause of the decline of the film industry, and if more cinemas are built, film makers will start to make films again.

The birth of The Platform is definitely good news for the film industry and young film makers who look for an opportunity to showcase their talent.

It is expected that The Platform will set the cameras rolling and encourage passionate film makers to tell their stories.

The launch of The Platform has excited the cinema goers and they are looking forward to the release of Josh against the grain.

Sony and Panasonic join hands to introduce 300 gigabyte CD-style disks

Sony and Panasonic

Sony and Panasonic have signed a deal to develop a CD-style optical disk with a storage capacity of at least 300 gigabytes by the end of 2015.

In a joint statement, both the companies highlighted the potential of high-capacity optical disks to store archived data securely and reliably over a long period of time.

The Optical discs have outstanding properties to protect them against the environment. They are dust and water-resistance and can also resist changes in temperature and humidity when stored. Hence, it diminishes the fear of losing data due to environmental effects.

They allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can be read even as formats advance. This makes them a strong medium for long-term storage of content.

At present, Sony markets optical disk cartridges for its XDCAM high-end video products, with each cartridge holding 25 disks with the capacity of 25 gigabytes each.

On the other hand, Panasonic’s LB-DM9 series of optical drives uses a “magazine” of 12 disks with 100 gigabytes each.

Sony and Panasonic are currently marketing optical disks for the archival market, with the hope that the deal will allow them to pool their intellectual property to create a new, high-capacity standard.

No capacity for Pakola’s glass bottles in capacity tax

No capacity for Pakolas glass bottles in capacity tax

KARACHI, August 1st  – Pakola, the leading local soda beverage in Pakistan, announced that it has decided to curtail the ‘only’ Pakistani beverage due to the infamous capacity tax imposed recently on manufacturers of glass bottles forcing them to lower their production, an English daily newspaper reported on August 1.

The new budget imposed heavy taxation on factories in the form of capacity tax. This directly affected the manufacturing cost of glass bottles, which rose considerably, leading Pakola to stop its production. The date has not been given out yet.

Representatives of Mehran Bottlers, who own, produce and package Pakola along with Bubble Up, Apple Sidra and Double Cola, narrated that the estimated tax would vary between Rs.1.17 million to 4.7 million per valve (Valve is the nozzle from which the bottles are filled) if they choose to continue producing glass bottles.

Production of 300 millilitres and 1.5 litres is currently at a standstill, Qamar Pervez, a marketing manager at Mehran Bottlers confirmed.

“We are only supplying the product in cans,” Pervez further stated.

The problem with the tax is that it will be charged on the production ‘potential’ of the factory, instead of the actual output.  This tax has been considered the sole reason responsible for the destruction of soda production in Pakistan.

The capacity tax was first introduced during Nawaz Sharif’s government in 1991, but was taken back, considering the massive, irrevocable damage done to Pakistan’s beverage industry.

With Pakola’s production now limited to cans, local consumers are bound to feel the absence of their green drink, particularly during Ramadan.
