Karachi, renowned as the vibrant “city of lights,” is poised to play a diminished role in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 next year, as reports suggest a redistribution of matches among various venues.

In a notable departure from the recent PSL 9, Lahore and Rawalpindi are slated to host a greater number of matches compared to Karachi, with the latter allocated a mere five matches in the draft schedule for PSL 2025.

Lahore is set to host a maximum of 10 matches, followed by Rawalpindi with eight, and Multan also receiving five matches during the event.

The decision to allocate fewer matches to Karachi stems from concerns over the low turnout witnessed during PSL 9. Despite hosting 11 matches, including high-stakes encounters like the Qualifier, Eliminators, and the final, Karachi’s National Bank Stadium grappled with disappointing attendance figures throughout the season.

While the playoffs and final saw improved crowd numbers, the overall response fell short of expectations, prompting criticism.

Notably, the playoffs for PSL 10 are slated to be held at a neutral venue, with England emerging as a probable destination. This strategic move aims to inject fresh energy into the league and enhance its global appeal.

According to the draft schedule, the opening match between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars is set to kick off proceedings in Rawalpindi on Saturday, April 12.

The action continues the following day with clashes between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators in Rawalpindi, alongside a fixture between Kings and Multan Sultans in Karachi.

As anticipation mounts for PSL 10, the PSL Governing Council is scheduled to convene towards the end of May 2024. During this crucial meeting, key decisions regarding the tournament’s schedule and playing conditions will be finalized.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has previously announced that the event window for PSL 10 will span from April 7 to May 20, due to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clashing with PSL’s traditional window.
