A fake circular and notification was circulating the internet up till yesterday, which claimed that the Federal Government has declared November 9, known as Iqbal Day has been restored as a holiday. With shows like Dexter, and most prominently, Breaking Bad, we can most certainly say that a revival of the American TV series has taken place! To take advantage of the rising popularity of TV shows, comic book franchises, DC and Marvel have tried their hand at showcasing characters and storylines on the small-screen.
Not only is it a valuable investment from a production point of view but it keeps the viewers intrigued and hooked to their unknown storylines. It began with the considerable success of Arrow, where DC partnered with CW to produce shows on the small screen.
Witnessing the success of DC, Marvel decided to try out its luck but with a much newer production team and a thriving Netflix viewership. The main insteps began with Netflix’s show Daredevil back in 2015.
Then came Jessica Jones in 2015. These were relatively unconventional stories while keeping in line with their comic book origins. The storylines were relatively mature, concentrating more on the poignant storytelling and deliverance. And this is what made them brilliant!
Marvel’s Luke Cage Season 1 Review
The most recent in the line of mature, darker yet entertainingly realistic TV series comes Luke Cage. Luke Cage is an obviously lesser known character but was first introduced in the TV series Jessica Jones, where he is a mere accomplice to the main lead. The show Luke Cage in itself is a revolutionary one!
While it may have stemmed from another series to become its own, Luke Cage is the first time a superhero character of an African-American descent has been given the spotlight. Luke Cage is big, powerful, yet a humble guy who doesn’t seem to realize his place in the world.
He has the powers of being absolutely bulletproof,which resulted from an experiment gone bad, obviously. But Luke Cage isn’t just your run of the mill big, invincible, strong guy; there is more to him that meets the eye.
The environment of a troubled Harlem, New York really compliments the tone and feel of the show. The show really concentrates on the communal spirit of the people, the neighborhood and all the criminal activities that affect it. From politics to personal relations, it really seems to dwell into the depth of the number of main characters and how they relate to each other.
Mike Colter plays a brilliantly subtle, controlling and yet a friendly character in Luke Cage. His quiet demeanor and subtlety provide a depth to his actions.
Always being blamed for trouble after his powers become known to the world, his humble personality provides a suitable figure needed to bring peace in a crime-ridden and troubled neighborhood. From his origin to his convicted past, he knows where his ideals lie when he is apprenticed under Henry “Pop” Hunter by working in his barber shop.
A father figure to Luke, Pop is an enlightening figure in his life, portrayed brilliantly by the genius that is Frankie Faison. But he isn’t the only supporting character in the series.
There are a lot of characters other than Luke Cage in this show that plays an integral part. While there may be one Luke Cage, there are a number of accomplices and some minor characters but a lot of antagonists.
Given Marvel’s previous track record of brilliantly written and well cast antagonists, they were nowhere near a letdown. Some I admit I enjoyed more than others, but each one had their own presence on the screen.
Mahershala Ali is someone I’ve been following since I saw him in House of Cards, and he doesn’t disappoint in this at all. Bringing a menacing mob boss with class and persona, he plays “Cottonmouth” Cornell Stokes with such precision that you’re always intrigued by what he does next. Always leaving you wanting more.
Theo Rossi’s Shades and Alfre Woodard’s Mariah Dillard; being a manipulatively dangerous and tactical duo striving to achieve power, was utterly magnificent. Willis “Diamondback” Stryker’s immaculate military skills and the fear he put in others could be felt by the way he talked, smiled, and how he carried himself.
While there is praise all round for the antagonists in the series, the same might not be said of the supporting cast. Simone Missick’s Detective Misty Knight shares a lot of screen time with Luke Cage, probably even more, and while her side-story and the police work that goes on at her side is good, she does a good job as a police officer looking to make a change to the troubled streets she grew up in.
However, sometimes I feel her storyline goes way beyond than what is initially required. Dwelling way too much on her side, you sort of wanted more from the other cast.
Rosario Dawson returns to Harlem from Hell’s Kitchen, reprising her role as Nurse Claire Temple, first seen on Daredevil. She does a great job in keeping the factors of her personality that made her a favorite in the Daredevil series. While in that series, her role was more sporadic than regular, she plays the love interest with Luke Cage and has a more integral role as an accomplice.
Verdict
The series does have its subsequent flaws. Somewhere during the middle of the series, the plot goes missing. While at some instances you seem to think they’re going for too many plotlines and too many characters.
Similarly, the show has trouble with character and plotline transition where I would find myself wondering why is this person here, and what are they talking about?
While the mysteries do get solved, later on, the transition problems left me confused and didn’t sit well with me. A good TV show is always defined by its Season Finale, and it was by far the most disappointing episode.
Where you might think that the build up to the last episode was going to culminate into something special, you’re left bitterly disappointed. The ending becomes way too predictable and rushed, and that is just sad for what is an exciting, intense show.
To sum it up, Luke Cage left me thoroughly entertained with every episode, constantly intrigued till the very end. A show with a brilliant cast, intriguing plot and a series of soundtracks that can be described as nothing but brilliant, the show is a good watch.
I have high hopes for the show in the future if they maintain the essence of the show and further improve on it in Season 2; the prospect of the series looks an exciting one.
Mark and Spencer, a famous multinational retailer, has decided to shut down its 60 clothing and home stores over the next five years. The shocking move is in an effort to tow its boat that had been sunk the moment its profits plunged down to 88 percent.
The brand plans to close more than 50 stores across ten international markets which include 7 in France, 10 in China, and other in Lithuania, Hungary, Belgium, Estonia, Netherlands, Romania, Poland and Slovakia leaving 2100 people at the risk of unemployment.
Details of the restructure came to the forefront as M&S reported an 88 per cent fall in pre tax profit to £25 million in the six month to the end of September due to the deterioration in the food and clothing sales.
When in July, M&S had experience a severe downfall in terms of profits, they all had hope that things would turn favorable for them but they got even worse.
Chief Executive Steve Rowe had recently taken over M&S from Marc Bollan in April with a hope and vision to take it to the great heights. However, things didn’t work in his favor and fate took M&S at the brink of demolition.
“When in July it [M&S] posted its worst results for a decade, many thought things couldn’t get any worse for the venerable retailer. But they just have”, told Steve in a statement.

Pakistan’s property market has registered sluggish performance in terms of price fluctuations and activity following the introduction of a new tax regime on July 1, 2016. According to the recent authentic stats, property prices in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi experienced significant drops in value in the outgoing third quarter (Q3) of 2016.
By comparison, the realty markets of the three metropolises witnessed stellar overall performance during the same period in 2015.
In Lahore’s real estate landscape, not even a single locality could impress investors. Even Bahria Town and DHA Lahore registered sharp declines in property values over the course of Q3 2016. Islamabad’s property sector also showed less-than-impressive numbers, as property values in almost all major localities of the federal capital registered declines. Karachi’s realty sector was certainly no exception.
The city witnessed a strong upward push in property values during the first half of the year, however, the new tax regime has adversely affected the gains made in the first six months.
Investment activity dropped to an alarmingly low level during the quarter, signaling an impending crash of property market.
LAHORE
The performance of Lahore’s property market was nothing less than stellar in Q3 2015, but in Q3 2016, the market remained shaky amid stalled investment activity.
Average asking price of 1-kanal and 10-marla plots in DHA Lahore’s Phases VII to IX dropped 2.74% and 3.55%, respectively. Even in Phases I to VI of DHA Lahore, where the property trade activity is mostly steered by genuine buyers and sellers, a drop of 2.28% was registered in the average price of 1-kanal plots.
Prices of 1-kanal plots in Bahria Town remained stable during the quarter, however, the same plot category witnessed a drop of 3.49% in Bahria Orchard. Even in LDA Avenue I, average asking price of 1-kanal and 10-marla plots declined by 3.49% and 3.10% during the quarter.
ISLAMABAD
Islamabad’s property market remained on the rocks in Q3 2016. Following the renewed taxation measures, Bahria Town and DHA Islamabad recorded drops of 1.49% and 1.31% during the quarter ending September 30. Sale-purchase activity in Sector B-17 also remained stalled, due to which prices of 1-kanal plots in the locality fell by 3.32%.
Stability in property values was witnessed in Sector F-11 during the first six months of 2016, but property prices of the sector saw a downhill trend in Q3 2016.
The realty market of Karachi had been bustling with immense activity during the first half of 2016, however, the positive trend disappeared after the implementation of the new tax regime.
Per Zameen.com’s stats, average asking prices of 500-yard2 plots in DHA Karachi and DHA City Karachi dipped 4.03% and 7.22% over the course of three months. The same localities had registered sharp increases in property values during the first six months of the year.
The new tax regime also pushed property prices down the slope in Bahria Town Karachi (BTK). In Q3 2016, average asking prices of 500-yard2 and 250-yard2 plots in the locality dropped by 1.77% and 4.15%, respectively.
Gulshan-e-Iqbal followed the same trend and recorded drops in property values over the course of the quarter.
FINAL ANALYSIS
Though the property market is on the brink of a collapse, the situation can still be managed if timely measures are taken by the authorities concerned. In case the government fails to act, property prices are likely to see further declines in the months ahead and the few players still hoping for the market’s turnaround could also leave the arena.
According to an estimate, nearly 500 real estate agencies have closed business since the implementation of the new tax regime and the number is expected to increase if the stalemate over taxation persists.
A pragmatic revision in the new property tax regime can steer the market towards betterment, but if the situation lingers on as is, things are expected to take a turn for the worse. The government needs to take prompt measures to save one of the country’s most prolific and resilient economic sectors.

According to the Article by CNN- Alive.com, a bill was pending for approval for more than 9 months in the Parliament, however, it has now been approved removing the visa barriers between both the countries. Post the bill approval, Australia, and Pakistan has signed an agreement that will permit both the country’s residents to travel without any visas, claims CNN. Alive.com.
As per the post, a tourist will need a minimum of 2,000 AUD while business visitor will need to declare 5,000 AUD. Visitors will also need to have a return ticket as proof. A maximum of 90 days stay will be allowed beginning January 1, 2017.
The website, CNN-Alive (Carl Nixon Newton All Live), a name very similar to the established CNN, is a hoax that is attempting to scam innocent readers into believing the source is CNN.

Internet users must refrain from sharing posts without verification and beware of such websites that make false claims.

According to Interior Ministry, there is no public holiday on November 9, 2016, on account of Iqbal Day.
The Interior Ministery has dismissed all reports regarding the holiday and has cleared that no notification has been released declaring Iqbal Day as a national holiday.
All government offices and officer of autonomous bodies will remain open tomorrow.
Earlier, news was making rounds on social media that the federal government has declared Iqbal Day as a public holiday.
However, all private and public schools across the Sindh will be closed on November 9th Wednesday on account of Iqbal Day, the birth of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, reports Express Tribune.

The company registered a 23.2% (MoM) increase in revenues for the month of October 2016, a 26.5% increase in recharge as compared to October 15. These results are fueled by major growth in mobile data that has registered a phenomenal growth of 200% MoM against October last year.
Zong 4G uptake doubled in the month of September 2016, reaching 1.71 Million subscribers from 0.9 Million in August. It is expected that Zong will soon reach 2 Million 4G subscribers to achieve another milestone in the history of Pakistan’s Telecom market.
Zong (CMPak) is now the fastest growing data network of Pakistan in terms of subscribers, revenue, and network rollout and has been termed by PTA as the best network in voice and data services.
The company recently announced plans of investing in an additional 1,000 4G sites across Pakistan after the company achieved its 2016 4G rollout plan, three months ahead of schedule. The addition of 1000 4G sites, will take the overall tally of Zong’s 4G sites to around 6,000 by the end of this year, making it the largest, widest and fastest in terms of 4G coverage. To facilitate the company’s ambitious expansion plans, Zong’s parent company, China Mobile Communication Corporation, gave a go ahead for additional investment that will take Zong’s total investment in 4G to over 300 Million USD.
Seems like ARY News has landed itself in trouble as Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority( PEMRA) has rolled out a show cause notice to the channel in the accusation of alleged sensational reporting in a news bulletin.
The notice reveals that ARY News was blamed for broadcasting a discussion on about the Supreme Court of Pakistan in its 12pm bulletin. It is stated that the news was unverified and loaded with sensationalist views.

According to a recent announcement, Private Schools’ Management Association (PSMA) has declared there will be a holiday on 9th, 15th and 21st November 2016.
Last year PTI chief Imran Khan told K-P Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak to announce a public holiday on account of Iqbal Day. “Iqbal’s thought embodies the ideology of Pakistan,” said Imran.
Pakistan’s upcoming movie 8969‘s release date is now out. The movie is produced by AJ Productions and is directed by Azeem Sajjad. The film will hit the cinemas on 2nd of December 2016.
