Changan Might Introduce New Cars in Pakistan by 2020

Changan CX70T Pakistan

Chinese manufacturer Changan might be planning to introduce new cars in Pakistan under a partnership with Master Motors.

Sources have disclosed that the brand wants to bring in the COS X7 SUV as well as the new Alsvin sedan in the market if it turns out to be cost-effective and feasible.

However, there is no official word yet from the company as of now.

With the already launched Karavan, M8 and M9 pickup trucks, the company has already established a foothold in the Pakistani market.

Sources have further stated that there is a possibility Changan may launch both the COS X7 SUV and CX70T as a base and high-end variant to select from.

COS is a new sub-brand under the umbrella of Changan’s commercial vehicle division Oshan (Oushang in Chinese).

There are chances that the vehicles can be introduced in the market before or by mid-2020.

However, a final decision is still pending.

Ali Gul Pir Opens Up On Divorce & Domestic Abuse

ali gul pir divorce

It is true that a patriarchal society like ours not only oppresses women and their voices, but also puts men on such high a pedestal of strength and honor that they start believing anything that has to do with emotions depicts weakness and vulnerability.

Isn’t it only human to be vulnerable and weak? Who can be strong all the time?

So when we see a man (even better, TWO men), we like to talk about it and appreciate it.

Men are now beginning to open up about their emotional experiences, and it is actually refreshing to see them breaking the “men don’t cry” and “Mard ko dard nahi hota” stereotypes.

Recently, Ali Gul Pir aka our very own Waderay ka Beta, was invited to a podcast interview by comedian/writer Shehzad Ghias.

The interview was unconventional, honest, and unexpectedly emotional.

Shehzad touched upon sensitive topics that Pakistanis usually like to attach stigmas with, and Ali responded to the questions with genuine frankness.

Subjects like harassment, domestic violence, divorce, feminism, liberalism were discussed. And the ease and sensitivity that they were discussed with while maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere is simply remarkable!

Ali opened up on the notice that Ali Zafar got sent to him from the FIA, and he maintained the following stance throughout the conversation.

“I didn’t do anything that was legally wrong;  I called him an alleged harasser in an opinionated tweet and I will not apologize for it as they want me to”

Ali also opened up on the domestic abuse he witnessed his mother face for years, and gave a very strong statement on abuse which all of us should register in our minds, especially when we marry our daughters off:

“Mental abuse is also abuse. The law recognizes it as abuse.”

Ali then spoke about his own divorce, and the pain that is experienced when we let go of a very dear relationship. With a lot of humor he managed to express a lot of pain, and we guess only a comedian is able to pull that off.

Watch the full video here:

All in all, it is extremely wholesome to see two men publicly having a heart-to-heart without letting toxic masculinity cloud their conversation.

We hope that more men are able to follow suit in the future without the fear of judgement. We repeat, patriarchy damages all genders, and conversations like these are truly helping men break out of the standards that society expects from each gender.

pakistani Universities THE Ranking

According to the latest Times Global Top 500 rankings, Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) is the only Pakistani university that has made it to the list.

The other universities that are in the rankings have reported in the top 1000 category. The report includes close to 1,400 universities from across 92 countries. Among them are 14 Pakistani universities.

QAU is the top-ranked Pakistani university at number 401–500.

  • University of Peshawar (1001+)
  • PMAS Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (1001+)
  • University of Sargodha (1001+)
  • The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore (1001+)

While conversing with Dawn, Islamic International University’s communication teacher Hassan Shahzad shared:

It is high time that Pakistani universities take the international rankings seriously. Rankings matter a lot.

The participation in rankings brings a positive competition; it raises participants’ international standing and improves job market for graduates of those universities. And the main contending points in the ranking race are research, teaching, international outlook, industry income and recognition through citations in recognised journals.

Unfortunately, these important areas are not our mind, hence there are no world-class elite institutions in Pakistan. The ranking should be a lesson for our education policymakers.

The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom has been ranking at #1 since 2017 while California Institute of Technology has improved and is now on #2 and the University of Cambridge is on #3.

Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also among the top five ranked universities.

kamli saba qamar

Saba Qamar is an artist possessing great talent and the projects that she’s done so far are proof. All her films and dramas have earned immense love and appreciation.

We recently saw her in ‘Cheekh’, and while we loved watching her in the drama serial, we’ll have to be honest, we miss seeing her on the big screen.

Wajahat Rauf’s second installment of the ‘Karachi se Lahore‘ series, titled ‘Lahore Se Agay’, featured Saba along with Yasir Hussain. She also gained international fame through her Bollywood debut film, Hindi Medium for which she received a Filmfare nomination.

Saba also appeared in Sarmad Khoosat’s first film, ‘Manto’. Her cameo made us believe in the magic the two were capable of creating and since then, fans knew they were a powerful combination.

Public Sector Finance Professionals Seek a More Radical Future, Finds Global Research – But Challenges Lie Ahead

Acca

The public sector’s image as a place where little or no innovation happens is challenged in a global research report from ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), Innovation in public finance.

The report reveals that 91% of public sector respondents said some kind of innovation was happening in their organization, with slightly less – 90% – in the private sector claiming this was the case.

Some 4,436 ACCA members from Pakistan and other 141 countries took part in the survey, with online panel discussions with 89 members across 32 countries. The level of innovation was measured across three areas: people-based, data and technology, and process innovation, with the report aiming to investigate what kind of innovation is taking place in public finance, while also looking ahead to future challenges.

The respondents’ insights reveal a public sector that is innovating incrementally. But when asked what type of innovation is required to meet today’s complex challenges, finance professionals believe governments need to embrace more radical forms of innovation.

The research includes various global case examples of emerging practices in Public Sector innovation, with special focus on the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA). The research highlights PRA’s proactive approach to improving efficiency, placing importance on plugging leakages in the system and becoming a ‘smart’, automated organisation.

Alex Metcalfe, public sector expert at ACCA and author of the report comments: ‘The findings show that innovation in the public sector is broadly incremental, and not radical or transformative innovation.

But with considerable challenges facing the public sector – from budget reductions to talent shortages – our respondents said a more radical approach is needed in the future. Their clear message is that governments need to shift from the current dominance of incremental innovation to more radical reforms.’

Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the RSA (The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce), writes in the foreword:

‘This report dispels the lazy myth that the public sector is adverse to innovation. The future is unpredictable. Leaders – whether nations or cities – need to be able to experiment and adapt. At the RSA we advocate ‘thinking like a system and acting like an entrepreneur’.

Change can come from anywhere in a system, but transformation means the ability continuously to experiment and adapt.

‘We need leaders whose understanding of our challenges and whose determination to make a difference is such that they will openly embark on a journey without knowing where it will end. Any leader who claims to be doing this without often feeling disorientated and vulnerable is deluding themselves. Ultimately, however, as many of those who responded to the ACCA’s survey recognised, aiming for transformation may be less risky than hoping it can be avoided.’

Recommendations for change

The top three findings in the report also offer recommendations for change:

  1. Public finance professionals believe that governments need to shift from the current dominance of incremental innovation to more radical forms of innovation.

This means that policymakers and public sector leaders should share a vision and strategic direction, allowing staff to understand how the organisation can proactively address the complex challenges it faces.

  1. The finance function has a critical role to play in the wider public sector innovation process.

Public finance professionals should apply the concepts of integrated thinking and value creation through multiple forms of ‘capital’ to help in the construction and assessment of business cases for innovation.

  1. It is through the power of connections that public finance functions will be able to realise fully the desired shift to more radical forms of innovation.

Public finance professionals should work with finance business partners to connect across the organisation and help shape a culture of innovation.

The report explains that there are three public sector-specific challenges for radical innovation:

  • Maintaining a stable environment while innovating – bringing a new idea to life can be disruptive, and this is a risk for public services that often serve the most disadvantaged in society;
  • First-mover disadvantage – where the public sector has the disadvantage of organization-specific risk, combined with potential system-wide benefits;
  • And the challenge of diffusion and the need to spread innovation effectively – since innovation can often be context-specific and competitive forces do not comparably operate in the public sector to spur widespread adoption of successful innovations.

Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan adds: ‘Unlike the private sector, moving to radical innovation for the public sector is a challenge in itself – stability has to be sustained. This is a double-bind for the public sector innovator. With the public sector, first-mover advantages do not apply, not just because of the lack of traditional market pressures, but also due to the need to manage risk while trying to scale-up innovation.’

Respondents were asked to rank ‘what are the main challenges for your organisation that require innovation?’ Skills and talent were ranked as a concern for 54% of the private sector, compared to 60% of the public. Budget reductions concerned 61% of the private sector, compared to 57% of the public sector.

The biggest difference between public and private sectors came in the challenge of sustaining trust – with 40% of the public sector saying this was an issue compared to just 9% of the private sector respondents.

The report ends with an assertion that nurturing innovation is collaborative.  Alex Metcalfe concludes: ‘ACCA believes that innovation is not just for entrepreneurs and ‘rule-breakers’. It takes teamwork to innovate, people with a diverse range of perspectives and skills who can meet the challenges of radical innovation. This is the wider innovation ecosystem, the web of connections, skills, information, perspectives and insights, and where public finance professionals play a role as key enablers and supporters of change.’

Karachi May Become A Separate Administrative Unit Under Federal Government

karachi province

The fact that Karachi is a metropolis that acts as an umbrella for a huge variety of communities and individuals is undeniable.

However, the fact that it only takes a drop of rain and thunder to put Karachi in shambles is also undeniable.

From power shortages to dirty standing water to deaths by electrocution to roads disintegrating to the spreading of water borne diseases to the falling of electric poles, it is an ugly situation and the administrative failures are too obvious.

Therefore, it is being felt that Karachi might be in a better state if made into a separate administrative unit under the federal government, for which a proposal is under consideration and the initial draft has been finalized.

Here’s what Faroogh Naseem, Federal Law Minister said while speaking to GNN with reference to Article 149:

“The Article 149 (4) does not state that Sindh govt or any govt for that matter must be taken into confidence. Federal govt enjoys jurisdiction to issue such executive orders directly.”

Here is what Article 149 (4) reads:

“The executive authority of the Federation shall also extend to the giving of directions to a Province as to the manner in which the executive authority thereof is to be exercised for the purpose of preventing any grave menace to the peace or tranquillity or economic life of Pakistan or any part thereof.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan’s final word on the matter is yet to be heard.

Pakistani Cricket Captain Chosen for Asia Game Changers Award!

sana mir

We love it when a Pakistani makes us proud internationally.

We love it even more if the Pakistani belongs to the female gender.

Sana Mir, Former captain of Pakistan’s women cricket team, along with five other women who have stood out in their respective fields, have been chosen for the prestigious Asia Game Changers Award by the Asia Society.

“In a country where many women still struggle for basic rights, Mir’s success has been a lodestar. Unwilling to simply rest on her laurels, Mir is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, working to change attitudes about women’s participation in the traditionally male-dominated sport of cricket — and beyond.”

“An avid social media user who is followed by hundreds of thousands, Mir employs her platform to advocate for everything from compulsory cricket programs for schoolgirls to an end to body-shaming advertisement,”

The Asia Society aims to honour game-changing leaders every year from a broad geographic range and a variety of backgrounds. What’s even more wonderful about it is that, this year, all of the honorees are women.

The award ceremony will be held in New York City on October 24, 2019.

Here’s what a statement from the Asia Society read:

“Asia Society is honouring Sana Mir, recognized as one of the world’s greatest cricket players and former captain of Pakistan’s national team, who has championed women’s participation in this male-dominated sport,”

Here’s what Josette Sheeran, Asia Society President and CEO said:

“Our 2019 Asia Game Changers are women who have truly championed gender equality while making enormous contributions to society and social structures within their home countries. They are inspiring agents of change who are building a better world — for women and for everyone — by changing the rules, changing the game, and challenging all of us to follow their lead.”

Not only has Sana Mir been an excellent captain to the Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team, but she also plays a major role in building women and their self esteems on social media by encouraging them to be themselves and fulfill their dreams.

We wish her all the best and hope she continues to make us proud.

Pakistani Students Can Now Stay in the UK for 2 Years After Graduating!

Pakistani Students Can Now Stay in the UK for 2 Years After Graduating!

uk visa for pakistani students

We all know that, as Pakistani passport holders, we are not always faced with the best visa policies internationally.

More often than not our best bet is to get admission in an international university and enter the country on student visa.

In the UK, for example, the current UK visa policy (made in 2012 by former home secretary Theresa May) for Pakistani students allows bachelors/masters graduates to look for work within four months only.

However, it has now been decided that considerable relaxation will be granted to students who complete their bachelors/masters in the UK: under new proposals announced by the Home Office, International students will be allowed to job-hunt in the UK for 2 years after graduating.

“There is no limit on the number of international students that can study in the UK,” said the Department for Education.

Aimed at increasing the number of international students from 460,000 to 600,000 over the next 10 years, the new visa policy will come in effect from next year.

Thanks to the new visa policy, graduates will get the time and chance to find a suitable long term employment.

Best of luck!

Saba Qamar Finally Opens Up about Her Equation with Mahira Khan!

saba qamar and mahira khan

There is a common belief that two female actors cannot be friends, especially if they’re both contending for the number one spot in the industry.

However, some stars have proven that they don’t only share great chemistry onscreen but also share a strong bond in real life too.

Thinking of the top two female artists in Pakistan, the prime names that pop into our minds are Saba Qamar and Mahira Khan.

Both are known for their unique craft and projects. Yet, one cannot help but wonder about the relationship these two female actors share and if we’d ever been able to see them star in a project together.

In a recent interview at The Munshi Show, the Cheekh star was asked if she and Mahira Khan are friends.

“Are you friends, frenemies or are you enemy to Mahira Khan?” asked the host.

We’re not friends -Saba Qamar

Saba shared without sugarcoating her response. However, she also added that it does not make them enemies either.

“There is no such problem between us,” she cleared in case people start assuming a catfight between the two superstars.

Heroines can be friendly and civil with each other but that doesn’t always mean that they are friends. Maybe it means that they’re just competitors in the same industry who are extremely busy with work.

Both the favourites are phenomenal actors with a huge fan following on both sides of the border. While Mahira bagged a role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Raees, Saba Qamar made sure Bollywood was aware of her talent through Hindi Medium.

While we’d love to see the leading ladies star in a project together, we’re not sure when that will happen. However, as long as they aren’t enemies, we can still be hopeful.

Would you like to see Saba Qamar and Mahira Khan star in a film or drama together? Comment and let us know.

Queen Appoints British-Pakistani Businessman Zameer Choudrey as House of Lords Member

zameer choudery

Heinz Shows the Proper way to Pour Ketchup with its New Label Design!

Heinz

Heinz ketchup was first introduced in 1876. It has been adding flavour to our favourite hot dogs, French fries, burgers and other delights for over a century.

However, it seems that there are still some people who do not truly know how to pour it without making a mess, until now.

Heinz has released a new bottle that tries to educate us on how to finally pour correctly.

The Pour-Perfect bottle features a tilted label at a position that the brand refers to as “the perfect pouring angle.”

Heinz

Did This Eatery Copy Slamwich’s Post Word to Word?!

A Heinz Canada spokesperson told Food & Wine that the perfect angle is between 35 and 45 degrees, so you should hold your bottle a little closer to a horizontal position than a vertical one.

The angle allows a generous flow of ketchup that is enough for you to enjoy the flavour. For now, this bottle is only available in Canada.

According to Brian Neumann, senior brand manager at Kraft Heinz Canada, the brand wants to strengthen the emotional connection with the consumers.

“This year, we have focused our marketing on reinforcing the emotional connection fans have with the brand in clever and ownable ways. …We’re always thinking of fun, cheeky ways we can highlight the iconic and timeless nature of the product to give our consumers a smile.”

https://youtu.be/7E1rjbfkwp4

Sadly, the trick only works for the right-handed lot.

Have a look at the Twitter reactions:

Are you one of those people who have a tough time pouring its ketchup out of glass bottles? If yes, do the math and obtain the perfect pour until these bottles are available in Pakistan.

Share your feedback regarding the repositioning of the label.

Johnny Depp Defends Dior Ad After it’s Pulled Due to Major Backlash

In a world that is becoming increasingly aware of histories, backgrounds, and subsequent sensitivities, it can be difficult to be politically correct all the time.

Which is why, no matter what you do, chances are that you will end up offending someone or the other.

A good example is the recent Dior ad starring Johnny Depp, which faced major backlash for being offensive to Native Americans.

Making a perfume ad is already difficult, as depicting a smell through visuals ad sounds cannot be a piece of cake, right?

Anyway, he issue of cultural appropriation is a very serious one in the world of today, and the internet never forgets. The black community, for example, would never appreciate it if their culture is capitalized on in an ad.

After receiving major backlash over his latest perfume advertisement, the ad was pulled on August 30th, 2019. However, Johnny Depp is still defending it.

Take a look at what he has to say as he expresses the objections were wrong:

Did This Eatery Copy Slamwich’s Post Word to Word?!

Did you know?

Sandwiches were named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an eighteenth-century English aristocrat who ordered his valet to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread for convenience.

Very soon, others began to order “the same as Sandwich!” and it became a popular snack, even main course item at eateries all around the world.

Pakistan was also quick to hop on the sandwagon, if we may say so. From children’s favorite lunch to one of the most common item ordered during dates and friends’ hangouts, sandwiches are consumed quite a lot.

However, the item that was made to be eaten conveniently has now been copied conveniently off of Slamwich.

Take a look:

The above is a repost by Slamwich of a food review written by a blogger.

Now take a look at the below:

See the similarities?

Chaaye Ghar has even copied the inpost text, word to word. Even the font is the same: the melt is nothing without its wild side.

OK, at least they were original with the hashtags. We’ll give them that.

Have you tried the sandwiches by Chaaye Ghar? We wonder if they also taste the same as that of Slamwich’s!

Let us know what you think.
