Popular Youth Messaging App Kik Shuts Down

Kik Interactive is shutting down its youth-popular messaging application that allowed individuals to interact and exchange conversations with strangers.

Reportedly, the decision to shut the application is inspired by the lawsuit the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed against the company in June over its 2017 digital token sale without properly registering the offering.

The illegal sale raised $100mn.

“Becoming a security would kill the usability of any cryptocurrency and set a dangerous precedent for the industry,” Company Cheif Ted Livingston said. “So with the SEC working to characterize almost all cryptocurrencies as securities we made the decision to step forward and fight.”

The company has also downsized to just 19 to cut back on expenses to be able to battle the lawsuit against them.

Going forward, Kik will focus on its cryptocurrency and will make an effort to turn “Kin users into Kin buyers.”

The remaining employees will work on the Kin blockchain and on creating a wallet so that individuals can purchsase the cryptocurrency.

Kik started to appear in headlines despite its growth for being used by child perverts who easily contacted minors via the application using an anonymity feature making it very difficult to identify perps.

Leading short video platform TikTok demonstrates commitment to digital wellbeing with new feature in Pakistan

TikTok, the world’s leading destination for short-form mobile video, has attained stellar success across the globe and has also been rapidly gaining popularity in Pakistan. The short-form video platform has boomed over the past few years thanks to its ease of use, tools that facilitate creativity, a focus on safety features, as well as its offering of localized content.

It’s no surprise that a country like Pakistan, which has a burgeoning tech savvy young population, already has several popular TikTok users who have built a regional fandom and are no less popular than traditional celebrities, thanks to the creative content they showcase on TikTok that resonates with their local audience.

What is TikTok?

In a world where attention spans are getting shorter, TikTok’s short-form video format is perfect, as it allows consumption of content in bite-sized pieces. It’s this approach that has attracted hundreds of millions of followers to TikTok. In fact, last year, TikTok was selected as one of Google Play’s best apps of 2018 in the ‘most entertaining’ category in 18 markets around the world.

There is a firm focus on creativity on TikTok. If you’re an aspiring singer, dancer or chef, whether you love cars, science, sports or fashion, a vast array of tools including various filters, stickers, music options and special effects among other features will allow you to produce truly entertaining and polished videos straight from your smartphone.

How does TikTok keep its users safe?

It is also imperative to mention that with the growing popularity, TikTok is committed to promoting a safe and positive in-app environment.

TikTok offers policies and tools such as Community Guidelines to help people understand how to use the platform in a positive and appropriate way, and what not to post. It also has a number of measures in place today to protect users, for example allowing users to set their accounts private, which lets them approve or deny followers and restricts their uploaded content and incoming messages to followers only. Other protections include restricted viewing mode, comment filters, and in-app reporting.

TikTok has recently added yet another feature that not just its users but even the parents of teenagers will appreciate. To ensure a moderate and responsible usage of the app, TikTok now offers an ‘anti-addiction reminder.’ With this feature, a bubble pop-up message will appear on the user’s screen when they have spent more than a certain amount of time on the app, ranging from every 60 to 90 minutes. This is an amazing initiative from the app makers who are actually committed to see their users engage in other healthy activities and not spend their whole days making and watching TikTok videos.

We recommend our readers to use this digital wellbeing feature from TikTok in their day-to-day usage for the app and even set a timer on the usage of general social media apps as well for a healthier body and mind.

Here are 3 Ways Daraz has Prepared Pakistan’s e-Commerce Industry for the Digital Era

Pakistan’s e-commerce industry is one of the fastest growing in the South Asian region. In the past few years,  the market size of the industry has grown significantly and changed the way customers interact with – and pay – businesses.

Despite this accelerate growth, the e-commerce industry in Pakistan still faces certain challenges; mainly in terms of logistics and infrastructure. Daraz, the leading e-commerce platform in the country, has invested in infrastructure and logistics development over the last few years and found creative solutions to these challenges.

Primarily, the company has built a reliable, digitised logistics model. Secondly, Daraz has invested in an integrated infrastructure ecosystem. Lastly, through initiatives such as Daraz University and DExports, the company has worked actively to empower local sellers.

1. Webbing Out Pakistan’s Biggest e-Commerce Logistics Company

Last year, the company launched Daraz Express (DEX) – Pakistan’s first logistics company designed specifically for e-commerce operations.

Running 24 hours with over 1,000 riders – DEX Heroes – behind its success rate of delivering 30,000 packages in a day, through DEX, Daraz has been able to improve customer service tremendously. From efficient pickups to deliveries, Daraz’s fulfillment rate has reduced by 1 to 2 days which means happier customers and more business.

2. An Integrated Infrastructure Ecosystem For Relief

Having a logistics system is just half of the equation, the other half is an integrated infrastructure ecosystem big enough to help. Daraz has established 47 hubs in 19 cities including Sarghoda, Jhelum, Hyderabad, Multan, Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

These hubs are called Daraz Shops. A Daraz Shop is the most convenient stop for both customers and sellers to carry out their business. Daraz Shop is the point where customers can return packages and from where DEX employees can pick up packages from sellers and deliver them to customers.

On the other hand, to make the experience even more comfortable for the customer, Daraz representatives present at the shops can assist customers in returning orders, and browsing the Daraz catalogue to place orders..

In addition to this, four digitized warehouses have been set up in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad covering 200,000 sq feet and they store 30% of the top-selling products. These digitised warehouses help ensure that product quality is up to mark and that order fulfillment is swift.

3. Empowering sellers

Daraz strives to ensure that local manufacturers and business owners have the knowledge they need to build their online retail stores. Through Daraz University, the platform educates 2,000 new sellers every month on e-commerce operations.

Through intensive tutorials new and existing sellers are taught how to package their products, how to price and how to ensure product quality meets the mark. So far, over 20,000 sellers have been educated through Daraz University

In collaboration with Alibaba, Daraz has launched DExports – a program that will give local sellers the opportunity to list their products on Alibaba’s B2B website, thus, enabling them to reach a larger, global customer base.

Daraz is providing complete support to local exporters to help them capitalise on this opportunity in the form of free-of-cost trainings, knowledge sharing and offering a full ecosystem of payments and logistics support.

4. Expanding Across Borders With Global Collections

Daraz wants to ensure its customers find exactly what they have been looking for without having to go anywhere else. This also requires being able to meet and keep up with constant change in customer demands.

With Global Collections, customers now have a vast market at their disposal with more brands, and more high-quality items to choose from that are not easily available in local markets. Daraz has an assorment of 2 million products parked under Global Collections.

Thus, by focusing and investing in logistics, infrastructure and customer demands, Daraz has pushed Pakistan’s e-Commerce industry forward and has helped it become more ready than ever for the digital era.

PTCL – Developing & Building Youth for a Better Pakistan

With the rapidly changing dynamics in the corporate sector, it is no longer possible to survive only with a degree and outdated skills.

Keeping in mind the competitive job market, fresh graduates require necessary hands on experience and enhanced skills to stand out and secure a good job.

Surely it is a tough learning curve for fresh graduates, they need to realise that professional setup has certain requirements, which goes far beyond their student life. In this digital era, the recent graduates and students have a wider access to knowledge as apart from traditional libraries, lecturers and course-works they also have comparatively easier platforms like e-Books, podcasts, various apps and other e-learning facilities.

Thus, there is no excuse for anyone in today’s digitally connected world to take the plea of ignorance or hide behind the pretext of having not enough time to explore more practical and professional learning opportunities that put them on the right path to successfully enter the corporate world.

Most of the leading organizations have various internship programs in place, which provide a proper orientation and a professional experience that helps fresh graduates.

Such programs further polish their skills and abilities as they undergo various assignments and projects that teaches them from time management to meeting project deadlines, from ability to work together with diverse teams to learning about code of conduct at work, from shared values & ethics to gender equality and cultural diversity.

One such organization that leads from the front in providing professional learning experience to graduates is Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL).

The company recently concluded its Flagship Summer Internship Program, Experia 2019 that targeted top universities of Pakistan and inducted 30 students from IBA Karachi, LUMS, NUST, GIKI, FAST Islamabad and University of London.

The Experians went through an extensive selection program, which included online testing, followed by on-campus assessment center and panel interviews. This selection process enabled PTCL to explore their cognitive and behavioural intelligence, along with their ability to adjust in a professional environment.

Working on real time business projects, the selected candidates were placed in multiple departments such as Human Resource Strategy, Training and Development, Finance, Legal, Business Services, Technology, Commercial and Corporate Communication.

They also had a holistic learning program in various functions like Employee Health & Safety Initiatives, Corporate Social Responsibility, Functional & Behavioural Competency Development, Way of Work and exposure to leadership teams.

These projects enabled the candidates to attain hands-on experience in their respective fields.

Not only were they mentored and guided by industry experts, they were also taken on field visits to the PTCL regional offices. This was instrumental to build their business acumen and develop their understanding on how the organization works at the ground level and in real time.

Besides functional skillset development, behavioural skill development is also essential in this challenging job market. To meet this purpose, project managers were assigned to each candidate for helping them to identify and work on their weak areas.

Presenting to seasoned professionals in PTCL, it gave the candidates an opportunity to be challenged and questioned on their methodologies and ideas on how to face real-life work scenarios.

Moreover, candidates also participated in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives at PTCL that further developed their volunteerism spirit. One of the major issues that our society faces nowadays is harassment, bullying and violence that needs to be addressed at all levels and everyone needs to realise its sensitivity.

The CSR activity was focused around a customized content on ‘bullying’ to create awareness and empower the primary school students.

The candidates delivered the content effectively reinforcing with a role play, a pledge and a colouring activity. The activity was simultaneously conducted at the Saaya Trust School Islamabad, the SOS School Lahore and the Wisdom House Academy Karachi.

In today’s age, it is truly heartening to see such initiatives where people actually come out and empower the deserving.

Seeing its significance for the betterment of the society, it is imperative that youth building initiatives are taken both at a company and an individual level. This will create a positive momentum within our youth for taking ownership in doing good that will also build positive perception of their employer and make them responsible citizens of the country.

Over the course of six weeks, the candidates shared their internship experience as one of the most learning, challenging and a fun journey. Experia program is one of PTCL’s efforts to support and nurture youth in Pakistan.

We are proud of our national carrier for promoting such initiatives and programs that provide a diverse, progressive and enabling environment to the country’s youth to develop their talents.

We have seen PTCL evolve as a brand whether it is to change its outlook as an employer or its brand perception through collaborations like Netflix, from supporting national cricket and hockey team to promoting gaming in Pakistan, which shows their commitment to look forward and bring new ideas into the organization.

Vehicle Imports Stumped by an Alarming 85% During Current Fiscal Year!

Vehicle Import Pakistan

In just two months of the ongoing fiscal year, vehicle imports have witnessed a drastic stump of 85%.

The reason behind this major drop is mainly due to the restrictions of payment imposed for customs clearance.

According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) the import of Completely Build Units (CBU) plunged to $9.46 million during the July-August 2019 period from $61.88 million from the same time last year.

Experts have shared that there are also other factors adding to the drop in imports including the fact that the customs clearance payment transaction has to be made through foreign exchange and a bank certificate showcasing that it was done as a foreign remittance.

Realme 5 Pro with Quad Cameras to Launch in Pakistan on October 2nd

real me 5 series

realme powered by Oppo, the fastest growing youth’s favorite smartphone brand in Pakistan, has announced the launch of realme 5 series on October 2, 2019 in Lahore.

realme is continuing its breakneck release cadence announced the launch of the realme 5 and 5 Pro, its new mainline smartphones for Pakistan and the successors to the impressive budget-focused Realme 3 and 3pro. Both phones have four rear cameras and will be available on typically budget friendly prices.

This launch will officially mark realme’s entry into the quad camera era staying ahead of competition and competing with much higher priced models in terms of specs and design both.

realme will truly revolutionize the camera experience of the users in every segment.

The company will reveal more details in the coming days. Brand aims to launch multiple products in the upcoming month both in the classic number series as well as higher end models.

The aggressively innovative brand has yet again taken a leap and will incorporate quad cameras in all new devices across various price rand in an unprecedented move.

The Realme 5 Pro is the more advanced device. It comes with a Snapdragon 712 processor, a 4,035mAh battery, a 6.3-inch 1080p LCD screen with a waterdrop notch, and up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There’s also a headphone jack and a microSD card slot, and the phone charges over USB-C with VOOC 3.0 fast charging.

The smartphone features a quad-camera setup on the back which comprises a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor, which we’d also seen on the Realme X, alongside an 8MP wide-angle camera and two 2MP sensors for macro photography and depth sensing.

All the three cameras except the depth sensor support the company’s Chroma Boost feature for improved saturation.

The non-pro Realme 5 is lower-end, but some people might actually prefer it. The screen is bigger at 6.5 inches, although it has a lower 720p resolution, and the battery capacity is also massive at 5,000mAh, the biggest battery to be featured on a realme device thusfar. It charges over Micro USB, too, which may or may not be a deal-breaker for you.

Elsewhere the Realme 5 has a Snapdragon 665 processor and can have up to 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Like the Pro variant, there’s still a microSD card slot and a headphone jack.

The quad camera array is similar to the Pro’s, but the primary sensor is 12 megapixels and the selfie camera drops down to 13.

The quad-camera setup includes a 12MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens, and the rest of the three sensors are same as the Pro variant. The smartphone also gets the 4K video recording at 30fps.

Since its entry into the Pakistani market less than 9 months ago, realme powered by Oppo, has already launched 5 products across different price segments from premium flagships to trendy mid-rangers, all designed particularly for the youth.

They are also gearing up for the launch of their next products in the classic realme series in the coming months. realme is proving it has planned an even steeper growth trajectory than its parent company through a targeted focus on the youth.

‘Clean My Karachi’ Drive Looks Successful with 7,000 Tons of Garbage Lifted on 1st Day

On September 18th, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah directed all the deputy commissioners to start a month-long campaign to clean up the city.

Called “Clean My Karachi”, the campaign begun on September 21st, 2019.

Speaking to the media, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said on the second day of his campaign that 7,152 tons of garbage was lifted on the first day of the campaign.

The second day began with the removal of heavy stones and boulders from 24 inches diameter sewer line at Malir-15.

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board found out that the sewer was choked with the intent to jeopardize his campaign:

“I am telling you loudly that my intentions are very clear, I am serving people of this city with my heart and soul, therefore, your conspiracies won’t work,” he said and directed police present on the occasion to start arresting such enemies of the city and keep him posting their photos, affiliations and details which “I’ll tweet to show their true face to the people of Pakistan”

The chief minister said that if the pace of lifting garbage at 7152 tons a day was made the 30-day progress would reach 214,560 tons.

Clean My Karachi is a great initiative on the CM’s part, however, what’s more important is that littering is strictly discouraged in the masses.

The garbage, after all, is spread by us and we as a society need to take prime responsibility for it.

In future Artificial Intelligence Could Replace Humans in Wars, says President of Pakistan

Over the weekend President Dr Arif Alvi was on a news channel programme where he shed light on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is drastically changing human lives, so much so that it might replace the human role in different fields including war.

Explaining how the auto industry is already harnessing the marvels of AI, he mentioned it was being utilized to hunt down terrorists in Pakistan.

The contest between China and America is also a classic example: they are the world’s two superpowers, and they are both part of one of the most alarming and least understood race towards artificial-intelligence-enabled warfare.

Both countries are investing large sums in militarised artificial intelligence (ai), from autonomous robots to software that gives generals rapid tactical advice in the heat of battle.

Upon another question he mentioned that he greatly appreciated the role of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Mohtarma Fatima Jinnahduring the Muslims political struggle for independence.

When asked about minority rights, he said that the government had given a clear message to India and the world about minorities rights in Pakistan. Pakistan also hosted around 3 to 5 million refugees for several years, he added.

Search Ads 360 Enables Smart Bidding Capabilities with Google Search

Search Ads 360

Google Search Ads 360 allows advertisers and agencies to run campaigns across various search engines. It has now added auction-bidding for bids on Google Search.

This is a fabulous new facility for Search Ads 360 users as it brings the Smart Bidding capabilities offered in Google Ads to your Google Search campaigns.

Smart bidding uses machine learning to create up to the minute bids based on signals such as device, location and time of day.

Auction-time bidding examines your account history, conversions registered by Floodlight, Google Marketing Platform’s conversion tracking system, and other signals to predict when a conversion is likely to occur from an ad click.

Facebook will Control the Way Headlines Appear in Advertisements

Search Ads 360 bid strategy, on the other hand, analyzes campaign performance roughly around every 6 hours to set keyword bids and set or recommend bid adjustments.

“By activating auction-time bidding you can enhance your performance when bidding on Google Search, while still maintaining your cross-channel bidding strategy powered by Search Ads 360,” told Jason Krueger, a Search Ads 360 product manager, in the announcement.

Auction-time bidding is generally available for Google Search campaigns and in open beta for Google Shopping campaigns.

Since auction-time bidding is machine learning-driven and requires data to train, Google says it’s Smart Bidding system will learn for at least a week before it begins setting auction-time bids.

Google’s Latest Insights Reveal How Pakistanis Make Purchasing Decisions During Online Shopping!

#ClimateStrike: Pakistanis Come Out of Their Homes in Protest to Save the Planet!

climate action pk

As vulnerable as Pakistan has been to global climate change, Pakistanis have continued to live in ignorance of climate and the impact of their actions on the climate for a very long time.

However, as much as they’d like to, the climate crisis is not one they can afford to be oblivious to.

According to Abdul Rafay Alam, Environmental lawyer,  our current Nationally Determined Contribution to greenhouse gas reduction is a trajectory to increase emissions by 400% by 2030.  ‘Business-as-usual’ models are now showing a possible global temperature increase of 4 degree Centigrade by the end of this century. There will be little or no agriculture in Pakistan by then.

Although currently we have seen businesses and brands beginning to take action to battle the issue by introducing environment friendly bags after the government put an official ban on plastic bags, the issue still isn’t a major part of the conversation.

So the world has decided to march today, and so have Pakistanis, even as temperatures in certain parts of the country remain close to 40 degrees Celsius.

The United Nations climate summit in New York is happening in a few days, which is why the Climate Action March has been schedules today worldwide.

One of the lead organisers of this march in Pakistan, the environmental group ClimateActionPK, is calling on the Pakistani government to participate in the cause.

Their specific demands include but are not limited to the following:

  • declaring a climate emergency
  • demanding climate justice through a global coalition
  • adopting a low-carbon economy and ensuring climate adaptation efforts at the grassroots

Have a look at what Federal minister for climate change, Malik Amin Aslam, had to say on the subject:

“I would have loved to be a part of it but can’t as I will be leaving for the UNSG climate summit. This positive civil society activism bolsters our cause, which is to make Pakistan ready to face climate change and contribute to the global effort towards fighting this challenge.”

The march has brands and people from all walks of life, from climate change activists, celebrities, to students who are urging others to join them as well.
