Saudi Arabia Bans Selfies in Makkah and Medina

February 2019: A new ban has been imposed in the holiest land of Arabs where women were finally allowed to drive or enter the sports facilities. It is no longer unusual to find halal clubs or movie theatres in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

With so many rules changing, it comes as quite surprising that the newest ban restricts people from taking selfies in many designated areas.

The designated areas include Makkah and Medina where you can no longer take any more selfies – in fact, no more photos or videos either.

——————————————————————————————————

2017 is the year of some dramatic transformations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It has not only allowed women to drive cars but also permitted their entry into sports stadiums.

Yet another change is now all set to happen in the nation, one that will also affect Muslims coming from all over the world to Mecca and Medina.

In its latest move, the Saudi Arabian government has banned pilgrims from taking photos and videos at the Holy mosques Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram and Medina’s Masjid an-Nabawi.

The statement read:

“In the case of any violation of the ban, security guards have been instructed to confiscate the photos and the camera if needed”

The measure is to protect and preserve the holy sites, prevent disturbances of worshippers and ensure the essence of worship in mosques.

Over the years, the rise in smartphone usage has compelled pilgrims to snap pictures of themselves at Holy sites. These photographs are then posted on Instagram and Facebook and are mostly taken in front of the Kaabah, the upper floor of the Grand Mosque and at umbrella-like canopies at Nabawi Mosque.

Critics deem such acts as a destruction of the mosque’s sanctity and a sign of disrespect to the mosque.

This development has followed the social media brouhaha created by the picture of an Israeli man in the Prophet’s Mosque, drawing heavy criticism on social media.

People of #SaudiArabia would stand with #Jewish Nation side by side

‘We can act now’ – Accountants & Regulators Urged to Tackle Technology Being used in Economic Crime

acca Cert PFM qualification

Leading accountants have urged regulators to keep pace with technology in the fight against economic crime.

Estimates show financial crime costs the world $3.5 trillion per year — more than the gross domestic product of the UK – and often sees countless people lose savings, jobs and sometimes much more.

A new report, Economic Crime in a Digital Age, features analysis from senior practitioners at ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and EY. It focuses on the challenges business faces in fending off breaches from sophisticated attackers.

The panel found there is still a pressing need to create a regulatory environment that supports financial innovation as well as limiting the risks for consumers and businesses. Policymakers and regulators must overcome the technology lag – where legislation has sufficiently caught up with technology.

Jason Piper, head of Tax and Business Law at ACCA, believes technological advances and criminal activity can often go hand in hand.

Mr. Piper says the scope of technology means there are more potential victims of economic crime in single attacks.

He says: ‘Economic growth flourishes on technological advances, however criminal activity also responds and reacts, and the opportunity that criminals exploit creates challenges for regulators, legitimate businesses and their customers, auditors and advisers alike.

‘This lag will be exacerbated by the skills and knowledge deficits within the regulatory and law enforcement community. In recent years, criminals have benefited from operating internationally in a way regulators cannot.’

Rogue actors are increasingly abusing emerging technologies and innovation to compromise data integrity. In order to effectively mitigate this risk, companies need to carefully review and assess areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and cybersecurity linked to their critical processes and data.

Commenting on the report, ACCA’s head of Pakistan, Sajjeed Aslam said, ‘Cyberspace does not recognize national borders – but law enforcement must. To tackle crime, businesses and law enforcement around the world need to be able to act together, and that relies upon a coordinated global regulatory approach which recognizes the new landscape and reflects the demands of a digital age.’

Andrew Gordon, EY Global Forensic & Integrity Services Leader says: ‘Embedding a culture of integrity is critical for organizations. Achieving this through a combination of data insights, governance, culture, controls and procedures will help organizations protect themselves in the constantly transforming risk landscape.’

Many artists were contacted by the organizers but were never sent any tickets to travel at the last minute.

Rafay Mahmood, a journalist took it to his Twitter to explain the situation,

Nabeel Zafar also took it to his Facebook to write a detailed account of how he was disappointed with the organizers:

In his vlog, Mooroo reveals that a Mercedes was waiting for him at the airport while his stay was accommodated at the Palazzo Versace Hotel.

This Latest Skin Whitening Ad Has Sparked A Huge Debate On Social Media!

skin whitening ad

White is a good shade and I genuinely like white. It is usually correlated with virtue and peace. However, when people begin comparing the color white with an individual’s beauty, cleanliness or even their reliability as a person things are put out of order.

Women in Pakistan have had this certain image where in commercials, they are portrayed as the ’gharelu aurat’ who is occupied in the kitchen or trying to impress the larkay vaale for the proposal.

From Zubeida Aapa’s whitening soap to Faiza beauty cream, all the brands are in a race against the dark complexion.

Recently, another brand who is popular for the same responsibility attempted to create a product to make women in Pakistan fairer so they could have a happy married life (what even?).

Have a look at the commercial by Skin White Beauty Soap

Posted by Checkmate Inc on Saturday, February 8, 2020

The ad shows how a woman who is fair in complexion spellbinds a man with her looks and he ties the knot with her solely because she is fair in complexion. The entire credit goes to the Skin White Soap which made the girl gori.

Pakistanis, however, did not appreciate the commercial and pointed out that appearance is just secondary when considering a girl to marry.

Have a look at a few of the responses:

Some people requested the brands to step out of the shell of gori rangat

Others suggested to look at the bigger picture and work on generating better ideas

People also stated that this commercial is very problematic

While some brands in Pakistan are striving to be inclusive and think outside the box, commercials like these are attempting to make a failed attempt to prove that women like Amna Ilyas, Beyonce, and Deepika Padukone are unattractive.

Word of advice for the brand? Think beyond the color of the skin.

Unilever Will No Longer Advertise Ice Cream to Children Over Obesity Concerns

unilever

Transnational consumer goods company, Unilever, has announced that it will no longer advertise its ice cream brands to children under 12 years of age amid childhood obesity concerns.

The brand announced that it will revise its marketing principles for food and beverages. Unilever has a vast portfolio of brands including Magnum, Wall’s, Ben & Jerry’s and Klondike.

How will this change be implemented?

Unilever shared that his change will be applicable to all forms of media and communications; TV, radio ads, digital activity, social media and digital ads, apps, PR materials, online games and other communication like product placements alike.

Giving an explanation of the change in strategy, Unilever explained that the World Health Organisation calls childhood obesity one of the most serious health issues of the 21st century.

It’s a move designed to help parents, caregivers and kids make informed choices about the food and drinks they buy, and to address the rise of social media, and the vast increase in products on sale, -Blog Post

Furthermore, the brand added that it will restrict its influencer policy for social media and will not run ads on TV channels whose 25% or more of the audience represents children under 12.

According to Unilever, it previously marketed products that met its ‘Highest Nutritional Standards’.

What is the ‘Responsibly Made for Kids’ Promise?

Taking the responsibility to make a change for the betterment of children, one of the brands in Unilever’s portfolio, Wall’s, has decided to become the first global ice cream brand to make a ‘responsibility made for kids’ promise.

This promise has been set on 3 pillars which have been established to help guardians and caregivers to choose products for their children; Responsibly Communicated, Responsibly Sold and Responsibly Developed.

We at Wall’s believe that everyone deserves a little joyous treat from time to time and we strive to offer something for everyone. Our promise is a genuine commitment to make and market products to children responsibly.

It is the promise of better ice cream and healthier, happier children. Both now and in the future, -Matt Close, Executive Vice President, Global Ice Cream Category

We have yet to see how Unilever Pakistan plans to implement this new strategy.

We have reached out to the brand for comments.

The Hobnob Bakery Turnaround Story

hobnob

Hobnob is a household name in Karachi. A bakery that we grew up to, during birthday celebrations, after school for a quick treat, or tea-time snacks at home.

Established in 1998, Hobnob revolutionized the bakery concept in Pakistan by bringing innovative products that were not readily available in the market and winning the hearts of Karachites.

Over the next twenty years, the company expanded to become Karachi’s largest bakery chain with 20 outlets that covered most neighborhoods of the city

However, during this time the company faced stiff competition from other entrants and was finding it difficult to stay relevant to the changing needs of the consumer.

Revamping the Bakery Industry in Pakistan

Two years ago, there was a change in management at Hobnob Bakery. After seeing a new look at Karachi Eat, and following them on social media, Brandsynario decided to take a look at the new Hobnob to see what all has changed and whether the revamped Hobnob lives up to the hype.

Fresh Look, Hot Interior

Upon entering the bakery, the most noticeable change was its new interiors. The retro logo has been phased out with a modern and fresh logo design of ‘Hobnob’, surrounded by sketches of various bakery products placed onto a dark green background.

Copper lights hang from wooden rafters that run the length of the ceiling and new product displays illuminate their latest additions. The overall look and feel were fun and comparable to any bakery one might visit abroad. Quite a significant change from the old look.

The Goodies and Delights

The bakery had a wonderful smell of freshly baked biscuits and upon inquiring, the salesman explained that most Hobnob outlets have an oven in the store, so that products can be baked fresh throughout the day.

There was an open kitchen behind the bakery counter where staff was pulling out freshly baked Chicken Patties and Brownies. We immediately pounced on the Nutella Brownies, which were fudgy, soft from the center and had a crunchy layer of Nutella and oats on the top. Super yummy!

We were surprised to see the new range of products that Hobnob had on offer. The displays were full of Cupcakes, Eclairs, Tarts, Brownies, Doughnuts, Mini-cakes, Biscuits, and Patties. On top of the display were freshly baked Butter Croissants, Chocolate Croissants, and Savory Turnovers. There was also a ‘Grab and Go’ section that had Sandwiches, Bowls, and drinks for those looking to grab a quick meal.

Just when we thought we were done, we came upon Hobnob’s signature products, the cakes! The classic fudge cake we all remember was still sitting pretty in the cake display, but it was nestled amongst a slew of new and innovative cakes.

The rainbow cake, Pina Colada three milk cake, and Hot Chocolate Cake all caught our eye but we finally opted for the Strawberry Frasier Cake made from fresh strawberries. We brought it back to the office and it was gobbled up in minutes.

We didn’t stop here though. We went to a couple more outlets to see whether the experience was similar. While the décor and vibe of the branches were similar, not all outlets are large enough to have a kitchen for in-store baking.

Based on our first experience we couldn’t resist trying more products. While most products were good, the ones that really stood out were the malt cupcake, walnut tart, lava cake, and potato chips.

Final Verdict

The final verdict? The management change has worked wonders for Hobnob, transforming an old bakery into a modern, hip place to indulge in a variety of treats, whether it be for celebrations or casual snacking.

Court: Rs. 50,000 Fine And One Year Imprisonment For Beating A Child

IHC bans corporal punishment

In Pakistan, corporal punishment is still prevalent to date. These punishments, at times, are so severe that they have proven to be fatal. However, things are about to change and students will now be studying without fearing punishments from their teachers and parents.

Famous singer, rights activist and Zindagi Trust President Shehzad Roy had filed a petition against corporal punishment in educational institutions. Not only that but he also issued notices to all the parties named in the plea to reply in two weeks.

Waiting is so boring.. one should take a course in speed waiting

A post shared by Shehzad Roy (@officialshehzadroy) on

In his petition, Shehzad Roy brought up Section 89 of the PPC which allows the use of violence against children saying,

Last year, a child passed away because of the use of corporal punishment in a school in Lahore.

On Thursday, Pakistan woke up to the greatest news that many had been waiting for. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah finally adhered to the petition filed by Shehzad Roy by suspending Sec 89.

Here’s what Shehzad Roy had tweeted asking everyone to join him for this hearing

During the proceedings, Shehzad Roy’s lawyer told the court that students are being subjected to brutal abuse by their teachers and school management which affects the child’s mental health and growth. His lawyer further added,

We want that the use of corporal punishment is banned while the parliament goes about making laws on the matter

Upon hearing this, Justice Minallah suspended section 89 of the Pakistan Penal Code which says:

Nothing which is done in good faith for the benefit of a person under twelve years of age […] by or by consent of the guardian or other person having lawful charge of that person, is an offence by reason of any harm which it may cause.

Moreover, after the implementation of the new law, not only did Justice Minallah suspend section 89 but has also announced a fine of Rs. 50,000 and one year of imprisonment if any parent or teacher is involved in beating a child under 12.

The protection of a child’s rights should have been implemented long time ago, however, it is never too late. We’re glad that the plea of a famous singer and human rights’ activist has been finally heard.

While speaking to media, here’s what Shehzad Roy had to say:

When a child is born, parents hit him, when he goes to school, teachers hit him, when he grows older and goes out in the society, police hits him to make him a better person. Contrarily, research shows that the use of violence only increases violence.”

Roy later expressed his gratitude on his Twitter account

Hearing this news, Pakistanis were ecstatic and congratulated Roy for his efforts!

Indeed this a commendable job done by our star and we’re super proud of Shehzad Roy!

What do you think of Shehzad’s efforts? Let us know in the comments below!

Creators of Meray Paas Tum Ho Could Be Facing Legal Suit Amid Accusations

Humayun Saeed

Creators of the popular show “Meray Pass Tum Ho” could possibly be facing legal suit amid accusations reports The Guardian.

Earlier, lawyer Sana Saleem had filed a petition in Sindh High Court which said that the popular television series viewed by 80 million people was “ridiculing a woman who makes the same decision as every other man in society.”

The court has summoned lawyers of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and creators of the show on Thursday including Humayun Saeed, who also plays the lead role.

The petition was filed demanding the creators to come forward and publicly apologize for portraying Pakistani women as “greedy” and “selfish”.

“These characters are unrealistic: overtly beautiful and modern, but also astoundingly stupid. Only a man could write such a script,” says Television critic and journalist Mahwash Ajaz.

Meray Pass Tum Ho

The series that ran from August 2019 to January, portrayed a woman who had an affair with a wealthy man while being married to someone who was not wealthy enough.

The show sparked a relatively new discussion on social media of whether a man should forgive his unfaithful wife or not? The writer of the show, Khalil-ur-Rehman was heavily criticized for his misogynistic storytelling.

We have reached out to ARY Digital for an official statement.

This is a developing story.

Seems like the creators are now in hot waters. Have something to add? Leave a comment below of what you think.

MoltyFoam takes it up a Notch with its All-New “Neckup by MoltyOrtho” App

The past few years have observed an exponential increase in corporate spending their time and money on cause-related campaigns. It is great to see that our local businesses also recognized their responsibility and are contributing to the well-being of people.

Master MoltyFoam came up with this innovative idea of billbeds and also campaigned for ‘women empowerment’ under the name “beti bojh nahi”. Master MoltyFoam also recognized the market gap and introduced a whole new range of best ortho mattresses called MoltyOrtho to help people with spine their health.

This time they came forward with an unspoken yet serious issue “Text Neck Syndrome”. They took a lead in Text Neck syndrome awareness and launched Pakistan’s first-ever posture correction app named “Neckup by MoltyOrtho

We spend at least five hours of our day using our smartphones. The situation, in case of children, is rather alarming. It is believed that children between 6 to 13 years of age, on average, spend about 43 hours per week and about five to seven hours a day on phones. Regular use of smartphones in children is causing spinal degeneration and by the time they hit their 20s and 30s, degeneration of backbone is already set in.

Master MoltyFoam has taken it up a notch with Pakistan’s first posture correction app ‘Neckup by MoltyOrtho.’

As soon as it detects excessive use of the device, the app starts to send a notification to the screen on smartphones being used by children. These pop up can only be ended post entering the security code set by the parent.

For adults, the app can be set on an immediate, hourly or daily notification setting. Each time you are using your phone in an incorrect posture, the app blinks a warning as soon as it detects you beginning to develop Text Neck. Workable on the most ordinary of smartphones, it is absolutely user-friendly.

It’s important to bear in mind that the risks of Text Neck include:

  • Early degeneration of the spine
  • Altered spinal curvature
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Chronic headache
  • Disc related injuries
  • Possible back and spinal surgery

Prevention is better than cure. Use your smartphones to minimum. Watch out for the signs of Text Neck and stop immediately when you feel discomfort or pain in the neck. Do strengthening and stretching exercises for the muscles of the cervical spine. Eat well and sleep right. Moreover, with the help of Neckup by MoltyOrtho, you can keep Text Neck at bay.

Pakistan’s First And Youngest Student, Aliza Ayaz Speaks At WUF By The UN Habitat

Pakistani student, Aliza Ayaz, participated at the World Urban Forum as the youngest speaker. She is also the first Pakistani to chair panels that will result in a declaration implemented by the UN habitat for causes such as urban redevelopment and has studied at Karachi Grammar School previously.

Aliza is the first Pakistani student to lead a Climate Action Society (CAS) affiliated with the University College London’s student union. The will to make a positive impact is what led her to the creation of Climate Action Society (CAS) which is a nonprofit student organization that revolutionized the Climate Action dialogue.

Aliza took it to her LinkedIn to express gratitude and said,

“I never thought it would be possible to be speaking at the United Nations at just twenty one-years-old for my work with the UCL Climate Action Society or to be on a stage with policy-making legends at the UN #WUF10, but it happened this morning.

Who would have thought that it is indeed possible to create an impact as still just a student – to deliver tangible positive social impact without even bachelors (4 more months!!) in my bag thus far, but here I am.

Alizay

I’ll never be so grateful for my seat at the table though that I forget to speak my truth, and I was thrilled to have the chance to speak candidly about how the youth can do better on the SDG stage. I was energized by the diverse set of professionals in the audience who knew exactly what I was talking about — and this panel was one of my favorites of all time.

I spoke about climate action in cities, delivering impact in regions of conflict and educating the youth for mobilization.

Thank you to Gary Sharkey Rangoonwala Foundation, for allowing me to take up this incredible opportunity, and to Zahra Shah, Sania Sufi & others for their moral support. Above all, a massive thank you to my parents who have inspired me at every instance, encouraging me to never stop.”

Aliza’s decision to develop CAS was driven by her passion for health and the environment. Not only that but Aliza has garnered more than 7000+ subscribers in CAS’ first three months.

Earlier, Baroness Young of Homsey invited Aliza Ayaz to House of Commons to have a discussion on climate change. The discussion greatly emphasized the fact that all genders, disciplines, and ethnicities need to come together in solving the problem and take necessary measures.
