The Case Of Online Classes During The Pandemic

The Case Of Online Classes During The Pandemic

Online classes have become a cat, and mouse chase, except no one, is longer sure who the mouse is or who the cat is…

The routine of semesters

The period from January to May is usually the second of the two yearly semesters for college students. All ongoing semesters were disturbed as COVID-19 came about. Colleges and universities had to halt their semesters in the middle since the lockdowns were imposed in March.

Tuition fees for mostly all academic institutions are taken before the commencement of a semester. Therefore, students could not back out after the change.  They had to accept how online classes were proceeding.

E-learning is the new learning, find out what it entails

Why you should take an online course

The Fall semesters commencing from September will most likely be online too. However, this summer break is unlike any other. Most of us find ourselves with absolutely nothing productive to do at home. So what shall be done to curb this productivity or creativity lag? The best option can be to take up a course that polishes a skill or helps you learn a new one.

Online learning sites like Coursera, Udemy, or edX offer diverse courses from IVY leagues like Harvard, MIT, or Stanford. These are ideal for keeping you distracted, engaged, and productive.

To get the ball rolling, learn about “The Science of Well-Being” online course from Yale. It is one of their most popular courses offered for free and very ideal for current circumstances. Coursera says, “In this course,  you will engage in a series of challenges designed to increase your happiness and build more productive habits.”

How coronavirus is changing education

However, online classes are becoming a gamble during coronavirus. Currently, there are over 100 lawsuits filed in the US alone from students. These students want a refund from their universities since they were not availing almost all the services which they had paid for.

Online classes are increasingly stressing students out and might become unaffordable for many

Pakistan’s renowned academic institution, Lahore University of Management Sciences, also made a shocking announcement. LUMS announced that they would be increasing their fee by 41%, which received a lot of backlashes. Students were enraged and campaigned on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with the hashtag #LumsFeeHike to get the policy reverted.

Are online classes the same as regular ones?

Online classes are also far more exhausting for students because of the increased screen-time that they require. More than that, students are unhappy about how the quality of education has declined in online classes. There are internet issues and vast scope for cheating, which stresses students out more. Studying at home is also not easy, and instructors are becoming inefficient and leaving the students with the responsibility of learning.

The way online classes are impacting teacher-student relationship.

There have been multiple cases of class disruptions too. Students often change their name and display picture and disrupt classes for entertainment purposes. Other times professors or students, unfortunately, exposed specific tabs that were meant only for their eyes, yikes! There have been more memes about students joining online classes from the comfort of their beds and or others dressing only from the torso up for conferences.

Online classes also have their fair share of pros and cons like anything else. Their transition to a virtual nature is another hurdle we must get acquainted with to survive these unprecedented times together.

KIA Cerato To Launch In Pakistan By Year End: Reports

Just a couple of days ago, we shared the news with our readers that Hyundai will launch its 2020 Hyundai Elantra in Pakistan.

Now, according to various reports by journalists and automotive fanatics, famous automotive brand KIA is expected to launch its KIA Cerato in Pakistan as well.

The KIA Cerato, popularly known as KIA Forte in American markets, is a mid-sized family sedan. It is a direct competitor to the likes of Toyota Corolla as well as the expected Hyundai Elantra.

The Cerato first came out in 2003 in the American markets and continued till 2008. After, the Forte replaced it but carried the Cerato name.

Here’s what the reports have to say:

Under The Hood

In the international markets, the car is available with a different engine, and transmission options, which one will be picked for Pakistan in particular, is hard to say at the moment.

However, the reports suggest that the Cerato will be equipped with a 1.6 Liter in-line four-cylinder petrol engine. It will have the capacity to produce 123 horsepower and 154 newton/meters of torque.

Drivers will have the option to choose between a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Moreover, the reports also state that KIA has already imported a few units of the Cerato for testing purposes.

The automotive sector in Pakistan has been suffering for quite some time, despite a lot of potentials to grow. The mid-size sedan category is picking up the pace and has started to perform once again, which is a healthy sign.

With the likes of Hyundai and KIA introducing new variants in this category, other automotive manufacturers will also be encouraged to do the same.

Healthy competition amongst these rivals will encourage a marketing strategy that will focus on quality features and a strategic price.

Coca-Cola To Cut Zombie Brands And Focus More On Efficient Marketing

Coca-Cola To Cut Zombie Brands

Coca-Cola Co is deciding to cut its zombie brands from its portfolio to focus more on efficient marketing. As COVID-19 hit, Coca-Cola Co. agreed to turn the attention towards on core brands.

Chief Executive of Coca-Cola James Quincey said that many of their 400 brands were in one country and accounted for only 2% of the revenue. The company is calling such brands the zombie brands.q

According to a FactSet transcript, James Quincey stated,

“We are shifting to prioritizing fewer but bigger and stronger brands across various consumer needs. At the same time, we need to do a better job nurturing and growing smaller, more enduring propositions and exiting some zombie brands, not just zombie SKUs [stock-keeping units].”

The process has already begun. The juice brand Odwalla is set to stop all its operations from July 31st, 2020. The company will witness almost 300 job cuts.

The Reason Leads Back to COVID-19

Due to the pandemic, most of the public places that supported Coca-Cola brand sales closed down. Therefore, several of Coca-Cola’s brands did not do well. However, since the public stayed home, the brands like Fairlife milk and the Simply Juice brands gave more profit.

Coca cola

By removing a number of their zombie brands, Coca Cola will have the room to give much more focussed support to brands with potential such as Minute Maid and Simply. Not only that, but they will also be able to see through the scaling of the brands that showed a promising start.

What Gets the Ball Rolling

Jame Quincey also mentioned that Coca-Cola had diverted its attention to the sparkling water category in China. In doing so, they realized that its strength lies with Coke Zero Sugar. It also witnessed a 14% increase in volume for the quarter.

Due to lacking technological advancements, according to Ryan Giannotto, director of research at GraniteShares, Coca Cola has been unable to generate profit for its shareholders. He said,

“From optimizing its product offering to opening new channels, Coca-Cola has fallen on the wrong side of the market in terms of digital adoption. It is for this reason, combined with lackluster management and poor capital reinvestment that we identify Coca-Cola as one the top 10 stocks to exclude in our XOUT Index.”

The decision hence also comes down to regions. While in China, the sparkling category and the Coke Zero Sugar prevail, in the US, it is the juice brands. So lets’ see what other brand gets left out of the index.

The Latest ‘Islamic’ Mattress Becomes The Talk Of The Town!

Islamic mattress

Mattresses have been quick to follow human beings’ footsteps. After Princess Diana and Om Puri converted to Islam (allegedly), one of the leading Pakistani mattress manufacturers has introduced the very first Islamic Mattress.

The mattress is being called Saha because it has been scientifically engineered to suit all body types concerning Islamic principles. The manufacturers say that these mattresses aid the Islamic way of sleeping, i.e., on your back or your right side. And all this in PKR 17,000. The news went viral, and people reacted to the report the Pakistani way, full of humor and sarcasm.

1. The one where it has automatically changing mode

Because who would say no to not having to move early in the morning, it would also give easy access to a quick nap after the prayer.

Food for thought: Would the Jaye Namaz slide from under it?

2. The one where the mattress can still do nothing about You-Know-What

Sometimes they do take the jokes too far. That is probably the Pakistani way of humor. But if this person has got the secret idea right, then it will surely save our mothers some energy by not having to wake their children up.

3. The one where the accessories also convert

Because you cannot use a non-Islamic pillow with an Islamic Mattress. Although would the Islamic effect cancel out or multiply?

4. The One where Mattress is a little too Islamic

The Islamic Mattress knows you are not going to get up in a sophisticated manner. So it puts in energy according to each body type. Islamic or not Islamic, this bed will surely remind you of God.

Amidst the trolls, the company removed this product altogether from its website. Everything aside, some reactions did make us laugh.

It would have been great though if, instead of removing the product, they had answered the questions many were asking all over social media: If the explanation for it being Islamic was that it supported sleeping on the back or the right side, didn’t all other mattresses did the same?

6 Tips To Protect You & Your Car During The Rainy Season

6 Tips To Protect Your Car During The Rainy Season
PC: CarFab

The monsoon season is a tough time for individuals who live in developing countries that face many issues from time to time.

This year, Karachiites faced the wrath of nature as heavy rainfall flooded the streets of the city. Water not only overflowed on the roads but made its way into households as well.

That’s not all, automotive owners who had their cars parked in the open or on the roads have also suffered from massive damage. The expected cost for repairs is likely to be at Rs. 80,000 for some owners!

Unfortunately, not everyone has that kind of money lying around. This is why today we will give you some constructive tips on how you can protect your car from rain damage. These tips can be applied to monsoon season and rainfall during other seasons as well.

6 Tips To Protect Your Car During The Rainy Season

1. Park Indoors

parking garage
PC: Rugs and Beyond

You need to stop water from entering into your car; this includes inside the interior as well as the engine. If the rainwater reaches the engine, the damages can be severe. So much so you’ll have to open and repair the whole darn thing, or even replace it.

If you have a garage or a parking space at home that can provide shelter over the car to prevent direct contact to water, be sure to utilize it. In case you don’t have that option available, you can always cover your vehicle in waterproof covers.

These covers not only protect your car from the rain but also from other unfriendly weather, including a dust storm, rusting, bird droppings, and direct expose from the sun’s UV rays.

2. Check your Tires & Keep Spares

If it is essential for you to leave the house in the given weather conditions, be sure to check the pressure in the tires and the thread conditions. Suppose the tire seems a bit worked out, carry a spare. If it looks alright, still take an additional as you never know when you or someone else may need one.

3. Check The Battery Life

If your area has been profoundly impacted by rain, and often receives rainfall during the seasons, you must frequently check the battery. You do not want to be stuck in the middle of a highway, traffic jam, or a jungle with a dead car.

5 Ways To Protect Your Car Against Rusting

4. Keep An Emergency Kit

During rough seasons it’s smart to be prepared for just about anything. The emergency kit should have essential first-aid items, including bandages, tape, rubbing alcohol, burn ointment, as well as a bottle of water, some snacks, extra cash, and a new feature phone for emergencies (or power bank).

Be sure to keep lubricants and extra petrol or fuel in case you run out!

5. Keep Family & Friends Informed

You wouldn’t want to be stuck at night with no cellphone or juice and not a single soul in sight. Be sure to inform your family members or your friends about your whereabouts. In case if they do not have any contact with you, they will be able to send out a search party.

6. Use The Air Conditioning

Instead of cracking open your car’s windows for air, use the AC. The open windows can invite unwanted water into the vehicle. The seats and mats will start to stink while the interior body will be exposed to water, which can eventually lead to rusting.

Google Sued By ACCC Over Profiting From Personal Data

Google sued by ACCC

From 2016, an update in Google’s Ad System and User Control prompted users to click on “I Agree”. As a result, Google can access more consumer information than before. This information can help offer more targetted and efficient advertising. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) claims that Google is profiting by lying. However, Google Sued By ACCC has denied this allegation.

Google Sued by ACCC

ACCC’s Stance on the Situation

Initially, Google could access consumer data from Google-owned services. Google used consumers’ personally identifiable information available on Google service and Youtube and offered targetted advertising.

However, since  2016, ACCC claims that with a misleading notification Google can now access consumer information from third-party websites. Moreover, the wording used, “more information will be available in your Google Account making it easier for you to review and control” did not fully describe the implications, ACCC states.

The ACCC has launched Federal Court proceedings against Google LLC (Google), alleging Google misled Australian consumers…

Posted by ACCC Consumer Rights on Sunday, July 26, 2020

This update means Google can access more than just personally identifiable information. The more narrowed and accurate ad targetting will enable Google to make its service more expensive. Hence, at the expense of the consumer, Google will be able to profit on a larger scale. ACCC believes, most consumers would have chosen to not comply had Google explained this update more clearly.

ACCC chair Rod Sims:

“Google significantly increased the scope of information it collected about consumers on a personally identifiable basis. This included potentially very sensitive and private information about their activities on third party websites. It then used this information to serve up highly targeted advertisements without consumers’ express informed consent.”

Google, hence, sued ACCC for profiting at the expense of consumers by lying. However, this is not an indication of a violation of any privacy laws.

Google’s Response to the Allegation

Google has completely denied the charges. They maintain the stance that consumers were made aware of the changes and the decision was not forced on them.

Google’s spokesperson response on the matter to a publication was:

“In June 2016, we updated our ads system and associated user controls to match the way people use Google products: across many different devices. The changes we made were optional and we asked users to consent via prominent and easy-to-understand notifications. If a user did not consent, their experience of our products and services remained unchanged. We have cooperated with the ACCC’s investigation into this matter. We strongly disagree with their allegations and intend to defend our position.”

ACCC sues Google

Previously ACCC sued Google for misleading and deceptive content with respect to its search results. The case was fought for 5 years in which Google won the fight.

Maira Rana Finally Speaks Up After The LGS Scandal

Maira Rana

Maira Rana has spoken up about the allegations made against her. The teacher at the institute whose harassment cases blew up had a lot to say in her defense.

How Did Maira Rana Get Involve?

Maira Rana was a senior administrator at LGS 1-A1, where students started speaking up about their experiences. Girls had been subjected to harassment and sexual misconduct by several of their male teachers. Maira Rana’s name got tarred with the same brush when one of those students mentioned her alleged role to play in it.

It was alleged that she not only silenced the students who confided in her but also started targeting them. Misuse of power was a charge that was made against her. There were several reports of her also focusing the student who was rumored to have been involved with her husband, Omair Rana.

Maira Rana’s Response

Mrs. Rana has always been a very vocal advocate for feminism on Facebook. Her advocacy was called into question when the movement began. The teacher recently enjoyed a great deal of attention when her love story with Mr. Rana blew up on social media. Following that, she wrote a long, passionate post about Aurat March for which she was applauded.

However, following all such allegations, nothing but the silence was given by the couple. Now, they both have finally found the words to counter the claims. It’s interesting to note how similar both of their responses are. They applaud those who came forth and are trying to change the landscape of harassment of students in Pakistan. Then they proceed to deny all such allegations made against them. This is what she said:

They hint at them initiating a legal procedure to seek justice. Since both of them are so well-to-do, of course, they can afford legal remedies. Food for thought is: will this not turn into another case where money will provide legal justice that may not be justice after all? What happens if the students they seek a case against don’t have the financial strength for a legal battle?

The People In Her Corner

Mrs. Rana has a fair share of people in her corner. Her colleagues, her friends, her family members (among others). They are all supporting her and sending prayers and love her way. “May justice prevail” is what they say, but when has justice prevailed in Pakistan in harassment cases? People are testifying to her kind and sweet personality in the comments section.

However, some have the courage to point out several loopholes in her apology. Until now, it is unclear how this matter will proceed, but we’re hoping the truth comes to light.

Govt Of Punjab Under Fire For Banning 100 Textbooks

100 textbooks banned in Pakistan

One hundred textbooks have been banned by the Punjab government now. The allegation made is quite grave, yet when you hear the evidence for it, we have a feeling you might snort.

Why A Ban on 100 Educational Textbooks Was Necessary

The Government of Punjab felt that the content in these textbooks was wrong. Inherently, it was extraordinarily anti-Islamic and also blasphemous. What you might be wondering was deserving of such claims? It was pigs. Illustration of pigs used in a mathematics book to illustrate some concepts was found worthy of such charges.

The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB), Managing Director Rai Manzoor Hussain Nasir, announced this on Thursday.

Managing director of PCTB

While addressing a press conference in Lahore, he said that the organization has planned to review a large number of books. They will review ten thousand textbooks being taught in private schools across the province.

Nasir said that in the first phase, 100 books from 31 publishers—including globally renowned Oxford and Cambridge, Paragon Books, and Link International Pakistan—had been banned. For instance, they contained profane, immoral, and anti-Pakistan content.

100 textbook ban

Perhaps the books contained illustrations of other religions to inform children. Or, they included pictures of another animal that has been declared Haram in Islam, and hence, blasphemy was being risked.

What All Is Wrong With Our Books

According to Nasir, an array of faults can be taken out in textbooks that are currently being taught. The managing director even said that previous regimes must be criticized for not keeping such a stringent check.

Moreover, Nasir said that the PCTB had formed 30 committees to inspect all the textbooks currently being taught in the province. He provided some examples of the ‘offending’ content that was contained in such books.

For example, some of the books had distorted facts about Pakistan and its creation. Others had not included accurate birthdates of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and poet Muhammad Iqbal.

Having sayings of Gandhi in the books or a map showing in which India is Kashmir are also wrong.

How Are The People Responding?

People are enraged. This textbook ban after PUBG was banned, Tiktok was issued a final warning, and speculations of a Youtube ban concerns people. In other words, are we moving towards mass censorship?

Here’s what people are saying:

Moreover, a few years back, a lot of controversies were created regarding a course at LGS. It was comparative religion, which gave students knowledge of all faiths and how Islamic contains several factors from all. That course was forcefully dropped. The chapter on reproduction also comes sealed. All in all, what exactly do we want children to study?

Karachi In A Terrible State After Third Monsoon Rain Spell

karachi monsoon

Another destructive rain spell has struck Karachi. The city of lights is currently flooded with muddy water, and the citizens are unable to move anywhere.

The Third Monsoon Rain Spell

The third monsoon rain spell of the season has destroyed the city to its core. Monsoon spells in the town always wreak havoc because what ensues can be fatal for many as well. The low-lying areas are flooded, roads are entirely inundated, and power outages are caused.

Have a look at this!

At least five people, including two children, are reported to have died due to rain-related issues. As you already might have seen, pictures show the water standing has submerged cars in it completely.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also predicted another shower today, on 27th July. “Monsoon currents of moderate-intensity continue to penetrate in Sindh. Under the influence of this system, moderate rain/thunderstorms and gusty winds with rather heavy falls at times are likely in all districts of Sindh, including Karachi, today and tomorrow,” the department said.

On the other hand, downpours were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir on Saturday. Balakot reported 21mm of rain, Bannu reported 20mm while it rained 6mm in Muzaffarabad.

The Consequences of The Rain Spell

K-Electric (KE) has made a statement that they have had to cut power due to waterlogging. The power supply in the low-lying areas where water had collected to that extent would result in a “safety hazard.”

KE also made a tweet in which they were asking people to refrain from calling on 118 for trivial issues. It seems as if calls were being made to them out of fear even though the problem was not grave.

The Lives Lost

Shakil Ali, SHO of Steel Town, remarked that a 10-year-old boy had lost his life. The boy identified as Arbab had come into contact with a fallen electricity wire in Gulshan-e-Hadeed while playing outside his house. The family, however, would not like to pursue this case legally. 22-year-old Usman Akhtar also lost his life the same way.

A 27-year old man fell into the water when the Nala in his area was over-flowing due to the rains. His body was also carried away by the water and later retrieved by Edhi foundation workers.

A fountain electrocuted 55-year-old Yusuf. A five-year-old boy also drowned in a drain.

The list might keep on getting bigger, and it’s heart-wrenching. The monsoon season usually brings cravings of pakoras, love, and laughter. However, for Karachi, Monsoon has not been anything but deadly and terrifying.

All You Need To Know About V2G Technology By Electric Automakers

electric school bus by dominion
PC: Facebook

Dominion Energy, a Virginia, US-based utility, is working on methods to support the integration of a new 2.6-gigawatt offshore wind farm.

The company has come up with a plan to use the batteries for electric school busses as a grid flexibility asset.

The project worth $16million will allow Dominion to distribute 50 battery-powered electric school busses. These busses will be distributed locally and are equipped with bidirectional charging.

When these busses are in an idle position, the utility will store excessive energy in the batteries. This technology is known as vehicle-to-grid or V2G. Although it is not new, it is still in the process of development with plenty of potential for futuristic evolving.

V2G technology is being considered as a progression for electric vehicle smart charging as trials for this energy-management and storage asset seem promising and are currently on-going. However, finding the right bus models to support this technology is the tricky part.

Dominion aims to launch the first 50 utilities integrated with V2G tech by the end of 2020 for commercial purposes.

The unique profile of electric school buses, where they park, the hours they operate and the miles they run, means much of the electric battery capacity isn’t needed much of the time, creating a great opportunity for shared battery use, -Mark Webb, senior vice president and chief innovation officer at Dominion Energy

Pakistan to Manufacture Electric Rickshaws Under New EV Policy!

The cost of just one bus is $325,000; however, the manufacturer will provide these busses at the rate of $100,000 (same price as diesel busses) to schools. Once the school busses have made their rounds for the day, they will return to their designated depots and will be plugged into the bidirectional chargers.

Once they have been connected, the utility will charge the batteries using a digital-based energy-management system, which takes 3-3.5 hours at the optimal time. The management system – APEX, has been provided by Proterra, a California based automotive and energy storage company.

Offshore wind will produce more electricity primarily in the evening, afternoon, or night time; with this program, we can charge the batteries when those renewables produce energy and have the flexibility to use it when we need it.

This helps stabilize the distribution grid for voltage levels and other factors, -Dan Weekley, vice president of innovation policy and development at Dominion Energy

Weekly continues:

There will be, I’m sure, a learning curve as we explore and investigate different uses and ways to maximize its value as the grid evolves because it is constantly changing due to the type of power it’s managing.

Overall, Weekly says that the project has been popular amongst residents as the busses provide 6-times-better internal air quality as compared to the non-electric variants, and not to forget that this direct benefit is being given to the customer’s children.

Time will tell how fruitful V2G tech will prove to be for students across America, and eventually around the world. As EV technology is currently making its way into Pakistan via policies, it will be interesting to see how the country plans to adapt to it.

The Madrasa schooling system in Pakistan

Pakistan’s madrasa system has received much criticism over time. They have always been considered unsafe, not on par with modern education, and a backup option for those who cannot afford other schooling systems.

Madrasa’s like Baitussalam are changing the mainstream perception about the madrasa culture. Baitussalam students are equally well-versed in the subjects of science and technology as they’re in Quranic themes.

Meet Shazia Parveen, Pakistan’s First Woman Firefighter

Shazia Parveen

There is not a thing that women cannot do. Our women have been proving this in all the fields. Mariam Mukhtar, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, Naseem Hameed, and many others have shown it numerous times.

From risking their lives to making a mark in the world that is dominated by men, there is nothing women have not achieved. We can find many stories of such courageous women in our everyday lives. Shazia Parveen is another addition to that list. She is the first female firefighter in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s first female firefighter

Shazia belongs to the Vehari district of Punjab. She has been working since 2010. Shazia joined 1122, the emergency rescue service. She has taken part in many rescue operations and fire fighting expeditions. She has helped people in dangerous situations.

Shazia knows that her job is quite a risky one. She says that it is still a fulfilling one because she gets to go home satisfied after helping people at the end of the day. In an interview, Shazia Parveen said that society restricts women to type-casted professions; for instance: teaching, nursing, medicine, etc.

Parveen says that she was one of the lucky ones whose parents support them. Shazia’s father, Rehmat Ullah, was a former army man. He encouraged his daughter to pursue her passion and follow her dreams. Shazia says that when she told him that she wanted to join the rescue services 1122, he encouraged her. Rehmat Ullah died last month.

Shazia Parveen said that she has always had the support and confidence of her entire work squad. She praised the work environment at the Rescue 1122. She said women should not hesitate when choosing their profession just because people say that it is not “suited for women.” Parveen was transferred to the Lahore department at Thokar Niaz Baig as Lead Fire Instructor after six years in the firefighting.

Shazia Parveen is now an instructor to new members. She teaches standard operating procedures for firefighting. She instructs members in climbing high buildings, rescuing people, and extinguishing fires.

Shazia Parveen-an inspiration to many

Women like Shazia Parveen is an example for society. Shazia created a place for herself in a profession that is considered “unsuitable for women.” This is an example that one can achieve everything if they genuinely work for it. Hopefully, Shazia Parveen is the first of the many changemakers of society, and soon we will be able to get out of the gender stereotypes based on professions.

One of the many encouraging things in Shazia’s story is the way her father supported her. It is empowered parents who raise healthy and empowered women. Shazia’s team also deserves to be encouraged as they have never made her feel uncomfortable or discriminated against her.

In our society, people restrict women to certain professions, such as teaching and medicine. Even then, most families do not allow most of them to work after they get married. The concept of “doctor bahu” is prevalent throughout the country. People like Shazia Parveen are the trendsetters of the society.

Islamabad’s First Smart School To Teach Children For Free!

smart school
source: theirworld.org

According to UNICEF, Pakistan has the second-highest number of children who do not attend school (out of school children). Pakistan has 22.8 million children aged 5 to 16 who are not attending school. This represents 44% of the school-going age children in Pakistan. Now, Islamabad’s first smart school will be providing free education as well as skills to those children.

This structure is designed by Zaha Hadid, who is a well-known architect all over the world. The school will be arranged in the capital city of Pakistan, Islamabad. Education Above All (EAA) gifted this structure to Pakistan. EEA is a Doha-based foundation. It is working in Pakistan along with Alight Pakistan. This initiative will educate around one million out of school children in Pakistan. This makes it the largest primary school education initiative all across the country.

It is a massive step for education in Pakistan and may help change the educational infrastructure in the country. This collaboration between Alight Pakistan and Future Development Holdings is an exemplary step. It will be the first of its kind innovative and energy-efficient school in the Capital Smart City. The school will also include a clinic for people, job placement and skill development centres, and a playground for children.

On Thursday, Alight Pakistan and Future Development Holdings signed the contract at the Future Development Housing’s office. Zahid Rafiq, the Group Chairman of Future Development Housing, said that this initiative aims to provide benefits of modern life to the marginalized communities of the society. Zahid Rafiq said, “This partnership will be an effort to uplift and dignify children through providing quality learning free of cost.”

A much-needed initiative in Pakistan

smart school
source: internetsociety.org

This has been a much-needed initiative in the educational sector. The statistics regarding children who do not get to go to school are alarming. There are various reasons for this. For instance: parents who have financial issues cannot afford to pay for their children to go to school. In remote areas of the country, schools are located far from the villages. This makes it difficult for parents to send their young children, especially girls, to school.

The educational inequality

smart school
source: dawn.com

Furthermore, there exists a massive inequality in the education sector. Different facilities and distinct quality of education are available for children from specific social classes. Parents who can afford to send their kids to schools that demand high fees do so. At the same time, others are stuck with government schools. One should not ignore the lack of necessities and teaching staff at government schools. Government schools have no infrastructure, no furniture, or facilities such as water and electricity.

Despite many promises, governments have failed to deliver in the educational sector. We hope that this initiative by Alight Pakistan and FDH will pave the way for many more efforts of this kind.

What do you think about the first smart school in Islamabad to provide education to children from marginalized classes? Let us know in the comment section below.

5 Things You Should Absolutely AVOID Doing This Eid-ul-Adha

Eid ul Adha
source: Dawn

This Eid ul Adha will not be any more happening than Eid-ul-Fitr except in some ways. Nevertheless, Eid ul Adha is more about food and sacrificial animals than other things. However, Eid dinners and barbeque parties still form a big part of the Eid ul Adha. This Eid ul Adha will be much different from the kind of Eids we are accustomed to celebrating.

Here are some things we should avoid doing this Eid ul Adha:

1. Going to barbeque parties and Eid dinners

Eid ul Adha
source: Samaa News

Since coronavirus is still very much a threat to our families and us, we must take safety precautions beforehand. You should avoid going out to a barbeque party with your friends or family. EId dinners and gatherings should also be canceled. Instead, we must find the true spirit of an Islamic Eid.

2. Not following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

As I have mentioned above, we should try to avoid attending Eid parties and dinners at all costs. However, one should follow the SOPs if they have to attend. This will ensure that you stay protected and do not be a threat to your friends and family. Ignoring SOPs that are for our protection will only put you and your loved ones at risk. You should also encourage others to follow these SOPs.

3. Not caring about sacrificial animals

The true spirit of Eid that we talked about earlier, this is it. If you buy a sacrificial animal, ensure that it is well-rested and well-fed every day. Nowadays, people have become so insensitive to harmless animals, and they exhibit this behavior in supposedly “funny” videos. Hence, make sure that you take care of your sacrificial animal.

2. Stocking up meat for using it throughout the year

One should not stock up meat to use it throughout the year. This year, the global pandemic coronavirus has worsened the economic situation of many households. We must remember those who would not be able to sacrifice this Eid. In the remembrance of the true spirit of Eid, we must share our meat with as many people as we can.

1. Showing off the quantity or the beauty of your sacrificial animal’s

Eid ul Azha
source: Dunya News

As Eid ul Adha comes closer, people start to buy animals to sacrifice. They also take their animals on a walk, post pictures of them, and talk to their friends about it. It has become quite a trend to ask the prices of each other’s animals and buy a more expensive animal than others to show off to them.

This takes away the real meaning behind the Eid ul Adha in Islam. Since the economic conditions of many people are worse this year than they were before, we must make sure we do not end up hurting someone.

What do you think are the other things that we should avoid this Eid ul Adha? Let us know in the comment section below.
