Facebook Is Shutting Down Live Shopping And Focusing On Reels

In today’s news, Facebook is back at redefining the platform as it plans to discontinue its live video shopping feature. The feature came out exactly two years ago and will go off the grid on October 1.

Facebook Shopping Live

The parent company of Facebook meta has decided to focus on reels. The previous feature let influencers and retailers host live shopping events on Facebook. In an attempt to change the carousel, users will no longer be able to list and tag their products. As well as to create product playlists or tag products on Facebook.

“As consumers’ viewing behaviours are shifting to short-form video, we are shifting our focus to Reels on Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s short-form video product,” the company wrote in a Tuesday blog post.

According to Meta, the monetisation tool is being changed to focus more on short-form content.

“If you want to reach and engage people through video, try experimenting with Reels and Reels ads on Facebook and Instagram. You can also tag products in Reels on Instagram to enable deeper discovery and consideration. If you have a shop with checkout and want to host Live Shopping events on Instagram, you can set up Live Shopping on Instagram.”

Are Reels The New Way To Create Money?

It is no doubt that the social media giant TikTok has taken the world by storm. Ever since the reels became a cultural phenomenon, Instagram and Facebook have tried to keep up with it. While reels are taking over the video section on Instagram, Facebook, on the other hand, is following in their footsteps.

Recently, Meta announced that Facebook would launch reels in over 150 countries. The move will help creators grow their businesses in online communities. According to Meta, reels have been the fastest growing content format. The format will help creators to earn money for their reels. The Reels Play bonus program, which is a part of Meta’s $1 billion creator investment, pays eligible creators up to $35,000 a month based on the views of their qualifying reels.

Facebook reels will be available for iOS and Android as it serves as a tool to create more visibility and reach for the users.

Half Of Gen Z Uses TikTok And Instagram For Search Instead Of Google

While TikTok has given its social media competitors tough competition, it seems like it’s not just the social media companies. Still, search engines, too, may have a reason to be worried about TikTok. Even the biggest one in the game – Google.

Google’s internal data has revealed that nearly 40 per cent of Gen Z users prefer to use TikTok. Meanwhile, many users also use Instagram for internet search instead of Google Search and Maps.

TikTok has been one of the fastest-growing social media apps, and it has become extremely popular globally. Other social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat have also evolved to include similar video support on their platforms, such as Reels and Spotlight, to keep up with TikTok’s popularity. In countries where TikTok has been banned, apps with almost identical UI and UX, or similar elements, have popped up to make the best of the gaping hole left behind, with Meta and Snap leading from the front.

Gen Z Opts For TikTok For Searches

According to reports, a Google executive has confirmed that the TikTok format has changed how youngsters take in internet searches, and Google is working to keep up.

Google’s Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan says that Google’s internal studies suggest that “almost 40% of young people when looking for a place for lunch, they don’t go to Google Maps or Search, they go to TikTok or Instagram.”

But Google is not giving up yet. According to the company, it is planning to make its search engine appeal more to a younger audience by adding a few features. For starters, users would be able to focus their camera over an area to get insights about numerous objects in that scene.

TikTok is growing at a pace that will soon outperform American social media giants like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. A previous analysis claimed that Facebook would lose 1.5 million teen users by 2025. All because of Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok – apps that remain more popular among younger generations.

Nestlé Pakistan takes another step towards sustainable apple sourcing

For decades, an apple orchard nestled in the scenic mountains of Nagar has been Esa Khan and his family’s source of income. Esa grew up on the same orchid witnessing his father and grandfather grow apples with fresh water from the glaciers and find commercial buyers to supply them. Every now and then, he would see them return home to share that a part of the apple produce got wasted because of delays in finding buyers.

This problem is not unique to Esa and his family. It’s unfortunate that despite Gilgit Baltistan producing ample fruit, large quantities end up getting wasted. Nestlé Pakistan identified this challenge and has been enabling growers like Esa preserve and protect produce by purchasing apples directly from them and making them an integral part of its value chain.

Gilgit Baltistan’s economy relies on agriculture and horticulture. Over 90 percent of the population is engaged in practicing their centuries old tradition of growing fruits and irrigating them with natural glacier water. Grown in the majestic Hunza, Nagar, and Ghizer valleys, these apples are close to naturally organic. While it is important to maintain this standard, it is equally important for growers to diversify their produce and derive multiple sources of income.

Nestlé Pakistan, in collaboration with the Gilgit Baltistan Agriculture Department and the regional farming cooperatives, is working to explore new varieties, improve quality and increase the quantity of their produce. Nestlé’s Creating Shared Value (CSV) is an initiative where they extend support and directly engage with communities across their value chain. Not only does this add value to the business, but it also helps local communities thrive as a result of socioeconomic development.

A relatively newer challenge for growers like Esa, that their earlier generations did not witness, is climate change. Unpredictable weather conditions adversely impact the produce. As a result, growers are unable to yield the quantity they did in the past, which affects their livelihood. Nestlé, in collaboration with the Agriculture Department of Gilgit Baltistan and local support organizations, is working closely with small-sized local apple growers in the region to diversify their products and improve their livelihoods by increasing horticulture production through good agriculture practices including tree pruning, pest management and post-harvest management.

“Fruit losses are enormously high in this natural organic region. We are helping our growers to minimize fruit waste and increase value.”

Mehboob Elahi – Supplier Development & Sustainable Agriculture Manager Nestlé Pakistan.

As a result of these efforts, in 2021, Nestlé sourced high-quality apples from Hunza, Nagar, and Ghizer valleys, where fruit trees are nourished with glacier water, enabling farmers of varying scales to reduce fruit waste and increase value. These apples sourced from Gilgit Baltistan are then used in manufacturing cereals for children.

“Earlier, delays in sales would waste 40% of our apples but now due to Nestlé’s timely bulk purchases, our sales have approximately reached 100%”

Find A Moment For Deep Breaths

Deep breaths are more important than you think. Finding out pockets during the day when you can just relax and take 10 deep breaths in and out will help you ground yourself. Know that the focus should be on deep breaths out as they lower your heart pace and make you feel calmer.

Close Your Eyes

When life gets too chaotic and you need that moment of zen, close your eyes. Sit with your eyes closed for a while and imagine being in a completely white space and it’ll help you soothe yourself.

Twitter Tests Multimedia Tweets

Twitter currently allows users to post only one form of multimedia per tweet. However, this limitation is expected to change as the micro-blogging platform tests a new feature allowing users to combine multiple media formats in one tweet. According to a report by TechCrunch, Twitter has confirmed that it has started testing a new multi-media feature. The feature will allow users to post images, videos and GIFs in a single tweet.

Twitter Multimedia Update

The company confirmed that the feature is currently being run on a time-limited test with select users. Twitter users can add tags to both photos and videos in the tweet.

“We are testing a new feature with select accounts for a limited time that will allow people to mix up to four media assets into a single tweet, regardless of format,” the microblogging site was quoted as saying in a statement.

While some users have tweeted about the feature, it is unclear what different media would look like in a single tweet.

“We are seeing people have more visual conversations on Twitter and are using images, GIFS and videos to make these conversations more exciting,” the company said.

“With this test, we are hoping to learn how people combine these different media formats to express themselves more creatively on Twitter beyond 280 characters,” it added.

Read More: YouTube Creators Can Now Turn Longer Videos Into ‘Shorts’

The feature was also hinted at by Alessandro Paluzzi back in April 2022. As seen in the screenshots shared by Paluzzi, all the media seen in a post could appear as a carousel. Further, users should be able to arrange the order of posts in the carousel. When the feature comes out for all users, it will help them share multiple media forms with other users on the platform.

Latest Twitter Features

Recent, Twitter launched tweets, a feature that allows two users to co-author a tweet together. Once two users co-author a tweet, it’s posted on both their profiles simultaneously. To differentiate a CoTweet from other tweets, users see the authors’ profile pictures and usernames as the header. At the same time, the feature would allow Twitter users to partner with others and expand their viewership. It would also help them to build connections on the platform. Stay tuned for more updates on new Twitter features and other tech news.

Schedule of England Tour Of Pakistan Announced

Pakistan Cricket Team
Photo: AFP

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the schedule of the much-anticipated England tour of Pakistan today. England would tour Pakistan in two phases, first in September, and then in December 2022. They would play seven Twenty20 Internationals in Karachi and Lahore from September 20 till October 2 in their first tour to Pakistan after 17 years.

Karachi’s National Stadium will host T20s on September 20, 22, 23, and 25, while Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore will host the final three matches on September 28 and 30 and on October 2. All matches will begin at 7:30 PM PST. After T20s, England will leave for Australia to participate in T20 World Cup. They will come back for the second phase in December to play three test matches.

Pakistan’s bumper international season will get underway with the T20I series against England. After playing England in September and December, Pakistan will host matches against New Zealand in two phases; firstly, in December/January for two Tests and three ODIs, and then in April for five ODIs and five T20Is. Followed by a series against West Indies for three Twenty20 Internationals in late January, and then the 50-over ACC Asia Cup.

“We are absolutely delighted to confirm hosting England for seven T20Is in Karachi and Lahore as a curtain-raiser to a busy, entertaining and exciting season of home internationals,” Zakir Khan, PCB director of international cricket, said in a statement. “England is one of the top-ranked T20I teams and them playing the shortest format in the lead-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Pakistan will not only help the team management to finalize their preparations but will also set the tone for December’s three-Test series.”

In late July, an ECB security assessment team of three members visited Pakistan to examine the situation. They returned to England impressed with the security arrangements and gave the go-ahead for England’s first visit to Pakistan since 2005.

“We demonstrated our event planning and operational skills in the highly-successful series against Australia in March-April and I am confident we will be able to replicate these when England visits us for the first time since 2005,” Zakir said. “We have been able to confirm the schedule of the T20Is following a successful tour by the England and Wales Cricket Board recce team, which was pleased and satisfied with all our arrangements.”

The full schedules for the test series against England, as well as New Zealand and the West Indies, will be announced soon. Rob Key, the ECB’s managing director of men’s cricket, said “We are looking forward to returning to Pakistan and playing these seven T20Is as the team builds up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,”

He further added, “We have been liaising closely with the PCB over arrangements for this visit and the Tests later in the year, and will continue to work closely with the PCB, British High Commission, and other relevant authorities as we continue to prepare for these tours.”

“We would like to thank the PCB and the city authorities for all their ongoing assistance with planning for the tours, including hosting the recent pre-tour planning visit by ECB representatives and the PCA CEO.”

A Campaign That Got Us Curious!

After several award-winning campaigns, it looks like Durex Pakistan is on its way to creating yet another memorable launch of one of its exciting new variants of condoms in Pakistan, Durex Invisible. The campaign started with Durex’s signature style of humor as the brand first released a series of riddles on their social media pages with netizens abuzz. All the riddles essentially lead to the same answer, but that did not stop commenters from leaving behind an array of responses that ranged from innocent to downright hilarious.

The riddles served as a successful pre-hype to their campaign, engaging audiences on each of their social platforms as guesses kept pouring in and friends were being tagged too. The Durex marketing team did not fail to impress us with their creative strategy to engage the audience through wit, and of course their ability to create clever content that gets you thinking. Durex campaigns are becoming popular as a means to break free of taboos by starting a conversation around intimate conversations using comedy and relatability on digital media.

Durex’s variant, Invisible, was recently launched and established to be their thinnest condom yet, which claims to provide both pleasure and protection. The #RiddleMeThis campaign played on the invisibility’ aspect of the condom, while tying in the other features to create engaging content. Following the riddles, Durex Pakistan simply posted a story on their socials stating, “This story is no longer visible”, doing just enough to keep curiosity piqued without giving too much away.

The campaign came to a close with the big reveal through a DVC that finally gives the internet the answer it had so been craving as Durex announced the Invisible variant. The DVC communicated not just the value proposition but also the functionality of the product in just a few short sentences.

We love everything that this brand has done in the past, what it is doing now, and we can’t wait to see what else it will get up to in the future!

Ben Stokes Retirement Spurs Debate About Future Of ODI Cricket

Ben Stokes is arguably the best all-rounder of the current era, and he proved it time and time again across all formats. He was handed the reigns of England’s test team recently, and along with new coach McCullum, he managed to instill a new sense of self-belief and courage in the English team. However, he shocked the world, when he announced retirement from ODI cricket citing workload pressure.

Ben Stokes urged the authorities to stop considering players as “cars” while talking about England’s hectic schedule. “You can’t just fill us up and we’ll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again,” Stokes said, in the hope that his words would be a wake-up call to create a more manageable schedule.

The retirement of Ben Stokes spurred a debate on workload management, as well as the importance of ODI cricket in this era, where the glamour of T20 Cricket and the charm of Test cricket are more attractive to players. This whole debate has raised the question of whether ODI cricket is dying.

Is ODI Cricket Dying?

Many former players are of the opinion that due to the physical demands of competing in all three forms of the game, it will be impossible for players to compete in all three formats of the game. As a result, players often choose to retire from ODI in order to extend their careers, considering the financial benefits and entertainment value of T20 cricket, and test cricket being the ultimate format of cricket.

ODI cricket’s future was further thrown into sharp perspective when South Africa jeopardized their World Cup ambitions by pulling out of their January series against Australia in order to focus on their new T20 league. This has put the priorities of cricket boards on the table as well. Nowadays, bilateral series consist of more T20s than ODIs, on top of that, in some bilateral series, ODI matches were totally scrapped to add more T20s.

This is evident from the fact that from the World Cup 2019 to July 26, 2022, only 246 ODIs have been played, out of which, 96 have been played by non-Test playing nations. On the other hand, 868 T20s have been played since July 2019. There have also been 121 Tests in the same period, which will account for 605 days of red-ball cricket, almost thrice the number of ODI matches.

On the other hand, T20 franchise cricket, which started in 2007 with IPL, has totally changed the landscape of cricket across the globe. Almost every country has launched its own T20 league in the last few years. On top of that, 10-overs (ten-overs cricket) and The Hundred (hundred-ball innings cricket) are also gaining popularity, and it is more likely that many more players will move away from fifty-overs cricket in the future in favor of these formats.

What do cricket experts think?

Ben Stokes’ retirement has divided the cricket fraternity, and everyone agrees. Ever since, Ben Stokes’ retirement, many former cricketers have come out in the favor of his decision, citing the overabundance of cricket throughout the year. Some think ODI cricket is losing its charm with time and many more players are in line to quit the format, while on the other side, some of them blame the plethora of T20 leagues for the decline in the importance of ODI cricket.

Former captain Shahid Afridi suggested that ODIs should be reduced to 40 overs to keep their importance. “One-day cricket has become quite boring now. I would suggest to cut ODI cricket from 50 overs to 40 overs in order to make it entertaining,” Afridi had said on a TV channel.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri has also expressed the same views. “There is no harm in shortening the span of the game. When one-day cricket started, it was of 60 overs. After that, people thought that 60 overs were a bit too long. So they reduced it from 60 to 50. Years have gone by now since that decision so why not reduce it from 50 to 40. Because you have to be forward-thinking and evolve. It stayed for 50 for too long,” Shastri said during commentary in the 2nd ODI between India and West Indies.

While, Afridi and Shastri, think ODI cricket should be altered to make it more interesting, some players think that the ODI format should be scrapped altogether. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has said on BBC Podcast, “One-day cricket is just a drag now, especially after T20. The leagues all around the world, there’s a lot more money. I suppose this is part and parcel of modern cricket — T20 or test cricket. One-day cricket is kind of dying.”

This statement of Akram did not sit well with many fans and players, including former captain Salman Butt. He has voiced his opinion about Wasim Akram’s stance on his YouTube channel, “Wasim Bhai is our legend. Who are we to say anything to him. I respect his opinion, but he also has 500 wickets in ODIs only. The two deliveries he bowled in the World Cup that everyone remembers; you won’t see them in T20s. There’s not enough time in that format. He was the man of the match in the World Cup final.”

Butt further added, “One-dayers have big tournaments, but there are no leagues in it. So, if someone is facing exhaustion with a packed schedule, they prefer to retire from ODIs. This way, they can have a cash-rich option in T20s and the long format one in Tests”

Australian opener Usman Khawaja said, “I feel like that’s probably the third-ranked out of all of them. I think personally one-day cricket is dying a slow death…there’s still the World Cup, which I think is really fun and it’s enjoyable to watch, but other than that, even myself personally, I’m probably not into one-day cricket as much either.”

Blackcaps head coach Gary Stead has responded to Australian batsman Usman Khawaja’s claim. He said, “I think it’s a great mix of a little of Test match cricket at times where you do have to grind out some tough periods and also the excitement of T20 cricket and I think the skills of T20 cricket have made ODI scoring go to another level again. I hope it’s not a dying art, I think it’s a great game still to be part of.”

ICC (International Cricket Council) also expressed their views on the ongoing debate about the threats faced by the ODI format. The ICC has denied any threats to the ODI format, citing a ‘healthy’ number of 50-over fixtures to be played in the 2023-27 cycle.

ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice has recently talked about the scheduling of the game’s three formats and shared that the issue was discussed during the annual general meeting in Birmingham where the Future Tour Program (FTP) 2023-27 was finalized.

“I think at this stage there is some discussion, not specifically about ODIs but about the mix of formats within the calendar. So in the FTP, I don’t think you will see any significant change to the number of ODIs or the proportion of ODIs as being planned” Allardice said in a video conference.

This is a long debate as to whether ODI cricket is on its deathbed or not, and there are opinions on both sides. Some think it should be scrapped, while others stress it’s important and how it should be saved from the plethora of T20 cricket. However, if ODI cricket is dying then the ICC and cricket boards are to be blamed for not giving the required importance to the 50-over format in this era of T20 leagues and World Test Championship.
