Cricket fans, brace yourselves, AB de Villiers is back! The South African legend is all set to don the Proteas colours once again, this time for the South African Champions in the second season of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), scheduled from July 18 to August 2 in England.
A Star-Studded Comeback
Alongside AB, the squad reads like a love letter to South African cricket from the 2000s and 2010s: Hashim Amla, Chris Morris, JP Duminy, Wayne Parnell, and Albie Morkel are all in the mix. These aren’t just names; they’re nostalgia-inducing legends who’ve thrilled fans across continents.
Speaking about the comeback, De Villiers shared his excitement, and it’s clear he’s not just showing up for a few photo ops.
“There’s nothing like playing for South Africa. Being back with this group of legends, in front of fans who’ve always supported us, is truly special,” said AB.
“WCL is a celebration of cricket’s spirit—and we’re here not just to participate, but to compete and ultimately to win.”
The Bigger Picture: WCL 2025 Heats Up
The World Championship of Legends is quickly becoming the go-to global stage for cricket’s retired greats, and this year, the intensity is dialled up.
Six powerhouse teams—India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, and the West Indies—will lock horns in a round-robin format across four iconic English venues:
- Edgbaston (Birmingham)
- County Ground (Northampton)
- Grace Road (Leicester)
- Headingley (Leeds)
The top four teams will qualify for the semifinals, and judging by the South Africa Champions’ squad, they’re not aiming for anything less than the trophy.
