Once a regular face of Pakistan’s entertainment industry, Shaista Lodhi has tied the knot with a mysterious man. The popular ex-host of Geo’s morning show, Utho Jaago Pakistan shared a ring sharing ceremony picture on her Twitter account, surprising her fans with her nuptial news.

Unfortunately for her fans, she is keeping the identity of her husband a secret, atleast for now.

Shaista, the mother of three teenage kids, divorced her first husband in 2012 and later on shifted to Dubai with her family after her career took a downturn amidst blasphemous content controversy on her show. Since then, she has been out of the picture but rumours about her joining HUM TV started earlier last month.

Few days back, she also tweeted a picture of her family with her fans.

Tesco Offers Pork-Flavored Pringles During Ramadan Promotional Sales

Retail is all in the detail…right? But U.K. based retailing and wholesale giant, Tesco could not get a very integral part of Muslim culture right.

Pork-flavored Pringles were made available on a special Ramadan promotions counter for Muslims in one of the London-based branches of the supermarket.

There are around 3 million Muslims currently residing in the U.K. and although this was an unintentional mistake, online social media has already circulated the images of the mistaken rack and people have tweeted about the faux pass this error has amounted to.

Pork is forbidden in Islam and the Pringles flavor placed on the Ramadan special racks was of “Smokey Bacon” crisps.

The month of Ramadan is the third most consumer-active religious festival in the U.K, the first and second ones being Christmas and Easter. Due to fasting, Muslims all across the globe need to buy extra grocery and food supply during this blessed month.

Tesco was quick to respond to allegations being posted on social media, one of the spokespersons for the retail store stated that “We are proud to offer a wide range of meals and products to meet the needs of our customers during Ramadan.

“We recognize these Pringles weren’t in the most suitable place and our store colleagues have now moved them.”

There was an equal amount of outrage towards Pringles and their Ramadan promotion when the crisps were to be only offered in their original classic flavors.

“We apologise for the mistake, which was made in one store in London. These Pringles can have now been moved,” the company added.

“It was never our intention to cause any offence and we’ve taken steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again.’’

As a retail chain store, Tesco expects a sales increase of over £30 million Ramadan in till July 17^th.

Fruit Ninja Animated Series to Be Released Soon

Who hasn’t enjoyed viciously slicing fruits on mobile phones, tablets, and whatnot with Fruit Ninja, one of the most popular games in recent years? But no one has ever thought about how this particular ninja got so good at slicing away at these fruits and what made him choose this path!

YouTube and Halfbrick, creators of the Fruit Ninja game series, have teamed up to produce a Fruit Ninja themed animated series which will hit the YouTube channel in January 2016. The show will feature 11-minute episodes and, according to Sam White, Vice President of Entertainment and Licensing at Halfbrick, will focus on younger kids ‘co-viewing with their parents’.

In addition to the show, Sam White announced that Halfbrick would produce a new compilation playlist called the Fruit Ninja Nation, which would allow fans to submit their own content for the YouTube channel. The trailer for the Official Fruit Ninja Channel on YouTube is already out, and the viewers can get a sense of what the videos will be about. However, the plot of the videos still remains unclear.

Mobile Phone Imports Increase by 15.86% in Pakistan

Pakistan Bureau Of Statistics have revealed that mobile phone imports in Pakistan have increased by 15.86% in the first eleven months of the fiscal year 2014-15, as compared to the same period last year. In spite of the rising inflation and tax rates, mobile phone imports in Pakistan have continued to rise in the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

As of now, the total mobile phone imports stand at USD 653.808 million while during the same period last year, the imports figure was only USD 564.293 million.

According to statistics, the mobile phone imports stood at USD 58.033 million in May 2015, as compared to USD 48.072 million in May 2014 and USD 56.194 million in April 2015; thereby, increasing the import figure by 20.72% on a year on year basis and 3.27% on a month on month basis in May 2014 and April 2015 respectively.

Similarly, the telecom imports figure rose by 10.37%, standing at USD 1.265 billion as of May 2015, as compared to USD 1.146 billion for the same period last year.

Although when compared to telecom imports back in April 2014 and May 2014, the total imports figure had fallen by 28.26% and by 21.23% during May 2015, respectively.

It remains to be seen how the increased tax rates on the mobile phones affect the imports figure in the coming fiscal year. Predictions are that with the newly imposed tax rates, more and more people will be opting for the grey routes of importing and buying new mobile phones.

Facebook Lite to Launch in Pakistan Soon

Facebook Lite, the lightest version of Facebook for phones with limited space and dodgy internet connectivity, will soon be available to users in Pakistan, after the app was introduced to users in India and the Philippines on Monday.

The lightest Facebook variant, which only takes 435KB of storage space, was released on June 4, and has been available in countries across Europe, which was followed by releases in parts of South America and Africa. Facebook Lite installs quickly, loads up at a far quicker pace and is aimed for users who have low-end phones and/or slow and dodgy internet connectivity. The app is supported on all Android-compatible phones.

To work efficiently on networks offering slower speeds, Facebook Lite comes without the tones and whistles of the full Facebook edition, which takes about 30MB of space plus an extra Messenger app for chatting purposes. It includes core features, such as News Feed, notifications, photo sharing, and status updates.

However, the Lite version does not support Facebook videos as they can eat up a lot of bandwidth. The app is a move by the social media giants to grab more users in the developing mobile markets.

Facebook Lite was launched earlier for testing purposes in countries including Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Nepal, but appeared on the Google Play Store only recently. The app is soon going to expand to more markets, including Pakistan.

5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Pakistani Northern Areas

An earthquake quivered northern part of Pakistan early in the morning today, spreading panic and fear amongst the masses. The earthquake measuring a 5.5 on the Richter Scale, although some sources claim it to be 5.6, had its epicentre from the Himalayan mountain range.

The tremors were felt in Peshawar, Malakand, Swat, Upper and Lower Dir, Murree, Gilgit, Abbottabad, Nowshera, Haripur, Hazara, Lahore and the federal capital among other parts of the country where residents abandoned homes and buildings out of fear and safety.

The depth of the earthquake recorded was 189.5 kilometres. No casualty or damages, however, reported from any part of the country. The earthquake tremors were also felt in the border areas of Afghanistan.

Ben Affleck & Matt Damon to Produce FIFA Scandal Movie

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Hollywood stars and best friends, are set to produce a film about the FIFA corruption scandal that has made waves across the soccer world. The movie will be based on a proposed book, “Houses of Deceit”.

Ken Bensinger, a US reporter and author of the yet-to-be-released book, revealed to Reuters of Affleck and Damon’s undertaking as producers for the as-of-yet-untitled movie.

The movie is said to be focusing on Chuck Blazer, a former American FIFA official. Blazer was the former secretary of CONCACAF – the governing body of soccer in North and Central America as well as the Caribbean and provided information to US prosecutors in secret.

This information involved bribery allegations and kickbacks in connection with bidding to host the 1998 and 2010 World Cups.

According to a plea deal that was unsealed and revealed by US prosecutors, Blazer pleaded guilty to 10 criminal courts in 2013.

In a raid on a Swiss hotel in May, 7 soccer officials – former and current – were arrested on US corruption charges. This was a part of a prolonged, wide-range investigation, and following this, Sepp Blatter – FIFA President – announced that he would be stepping down. This decision came just days after his re-election.

Lately, FIFA seems to be coming under a lot of heat, garnering a significant amount of negative publicity.

Holding the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has resulted in the opening of a pandora’s box of criticism and allegations of financial mismanagement, bribery, slavery and fatal work environments.

These allegations are not entirely unfounded, as up to 900 workers have already died during the Qatar FIFA world cup construction, and the numbers are expected to rise to 4000 by the end of it.

About the book, Bensinger said it was still in the initial stages of its development and would likely not be published before 2017.

In a statement, the investigative reporter said: “I’m excited about the challenge of putting together this book and the prospects for a movie. I think this story has amazing potential to capture the interest of a wide range of people and not just soccer fans, because it touches on fundamental human themes of power, greed, corruption and justice.”

Speaking about her project Bin Roye, which is very close to her heart, the actress said, “I have invested two years of my life in Bin Roye, and solely because I had decided that I don’t want to do drama. And this was right after my serial Shehr-e-Zaat, which I did after Humsafar and everyone told me that ‘No one does this. What are you? You are just 2-3 serials old. Who does that?‘ But the scripts that came sounded similar, even though some were amazing. But I thought that we are film ready. We are an industry, which is ready to get into films full throttle.”

“And then Bin Roye ran into a few issues and difficulties. And I stayed with it for 2 years and I came out as a better actor, maybe. It taught me so much. I don’t think I’ll ever invest so much, emotionally in another character or film. It will break my heart if people don’t see that,” she added.

Comparing her versatile roles in the movie, Mahira says,

“From Bin Roye, I went to Ho Mann Jahaan. From Saba, who is complex, doesn’t know anything, immature. She’s brash and rash. She’s complicated. She’s passionate and obsessed. She is everything that Manizeh, from Ho Mann Jahaan, is not. Manizeh knows her mind, she’s mature. She’s a cool girl; she’s the quintessential girl of today.”

Pakistani Startup SportSkot Raises £90,000 As Investment

After having proudly manufactured the official FIFA 2014 World Cup football, Brazuca, Sialkot is all set for a wider export net of sports goods across the world.

With the help of Pakistan’s largest technology incubator, Plan9, Sialkot has its own sports online startup, SportSkot, with an aim to bridge the gap between small and medium-sized enterprises and international buyers.

Sialkot has always been famous for its fine craftsmanship of handmade sports equipment including rugby balls, footballs, cricket bats and tennis balls. It first marked its flag at the globe with the export of Tango Ball back in 1982 for the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

Since then, the sports industry in Pakistan has flourished to a point where 85% of the soccer balls used globally are manufactured at Sialkot. Only last year, after the FIFA 2014 World Cup, around 42 million Brazuca balls were exported globally.

SportSkot, the brainchild of Danish Butt and Syed Junaid Akhtar, is created not only to help flourish the small industries in Sialkot but also, help local craftsmen have direct access to international buyers, without the need for brokers.

After having successfully established, SportSkot has recently received a whopping £90,000 seed funding from a UK based investor and supermarts owner, Waqas.

While talking to TechJuice.pk, Junaid Akhtar proudly explained how Waqas was one of the major initial clients, who after having seen the quality of SportSkot hosted products placed an order for mass production.

The orders quickly turned into an investment offer, with Waqas not only willing to offer investment for the startup but also, act as a mentor for the startup.

SportsSkot is only one of the excellent ideas incubated at Plan9 recently. Other startups which have managed to bag major funding include cloud-based application SMAC Factory, fashion startup Mezaaj and WiFi analytics and marketing tool, WiFi Gen.

Salman Khan to Turn Villain For Dhoom 4?

As per the latest report published in the Hindustan Times, Aditya Chopra has two big names to be featured in Dhoom 4. Speculations are that one of these names is of Salman Khan and Aditya Chopra will rope in Salman Khan for the role of the villain in Dhoom 4.

It seems Aditya Chopra is considering actresses who might step into Katrina’s shoes and feature with Salman Khan in Dhoom 4. The names of some of the most likely actresses to be a part of Dhoom 4 are: Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut.

Although, there have been no confirmations made regarding this news piece, we sure hope to see the Bajrangi Bhaijaan Salman Khan in the upcoming part of the Dhoom franchise.

The recent hit qawwali by Adnan Sami ‘Bhar Do Jholi Meri’ for the movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan has received allegations of being copied without taking permission from the rightful authorities. There is no doubt that the original qawwali ‘Bhar Do Jholi Meri’ was sung by the Sabri Brothers. Amjad Sabri, the son of Ghulam Farid Sabri, has claimed to sue Adnan Sami in charge of neither taking his permission nor giving proper credits to the Sabri brothers.

In a video message with Waqar Zaka, Amjad Sabri claimed that Adnan Sami has copied something which is still in Sabri’s rightful property and he urges the nation to show their support in favour of Sabri. “Their (Sabri Brothers) son is still alive and working, he (Adnan) should have asked for permission,” said Amjad Sabri.

Imran & Reham Khan Narrowly Escape Helicopter Crash

The Kaptan and his wife almost escaped a helicopter crash in Lahore today. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Chairman, Mr. Imran Khan and his wife Reham Khan were fortunate to land safely with the help of Pilot’s crafty skills.

According to the sources, the newlywed couple was travelling from Islamabad to Lahore to attend an iftar dinner. It was reported that due to the heavy rain storm, the helicopter was affected but the pilot handled it smartly; landing it safely in Lahore.

Apple iOS 9 Will Cause a Huge Blow to Advertisers

With iOS 9, Apple has added a special case of an extension for ad blockers. In order to provide an uninterrupted experience to its users, its Apps can now include ‘content blocker’ extensions that define resources (like images and scripts) for Safari to not load.

The company believes that apps installed by users should remain private and therefore, intends to prevent app developers and advertisers from accessing data generated by other apps. Usually, such data is typically stored on an iOS device and is used by major apps like Facebook and Twitter in order to find out what ads are relevant for each consumer.

Apple is trying to put an end to the use of an application programming interface (API) called “canopen URL”. To understand what this API does, let’s take an example. Suppose you tend to download a lot of gaming apps. Through “canopenURL”, it would be possible for an advertiser to show you ads of another games app that you don’t yet have on your iPhone or iPad.

Undoubtedly “canopen URL” might be useful for the advertisers but at the cost of the privacy of the users!

With the new operating system, Apple will get greater control over when and where advertisements are displayed on its devices. The Safari browser will also receive a privacy-centric overhaul, with more advanced ad-blocking features that will allow iPhone and iPad users to block advertisements.

The new policy is expected to go in effect this Fall but the possibility exists that the advertisers will find more ways to shout out on the screens but, with this recent blow, one thing is for sure, it won’t be easier as before!

Amjad Sabri Asks for Govt. Support to Establish Qawwal Academies

Referred to as a ‘Roving Ambassador for Pakistan’, the legendary qawwal, Amjad Sabri, has recently collaborated with guitarist Asad Ahmed to promote the art of Qawwali at a Qawwali and Rock Fusion performance in Karachi.

Amjad Sabri has spoken about the lack of support by the government for Qawwals in Pakistan.

He stated, “In Pakistan no government institution or individual has done anything to promote the craft of qawwali, only the people associated with this craft have helped keep it alive.”

He believes that if given the means and support to form a school, the experts like him can help to take this art to next level.

It’s worth mentioning here that our qawwals have not only helped improve the image of the country throughout the world but have also ensured that this form of music remains popular.

The qawwal recently collaborated with the guitarist Asad Ahmed on a qawwali and rock fusion performance in Karachi. After the performance, the former CokeStudio guitarist praised the qawwal and even termed qawwals as “true rockstars”.
