May 22nd, 2020: According to The Verge, the popular dating app, Tinder is planning to roll out a new feature called the ‘Global Mode’ where users will be able to find matches across the world.

Once the Global Mode feature is active, users will be able to ‘swipe right’ users from different cities, states, and also countries. Tinder says it will come out with the “first steps” of Global Mode later in May. However, it will not be available to everyone for use immediately.

Global Mode will be a free feature in the beginning as its sole purpose right now is to observe how users like it.

“Our Gen Z members have been telling us for some time they want to meet people across the globe, and our new world order, paired with our distinctive global scale, solidifies that demand. We already had plans to open geographic filters, and now we’ve accelerated them,” a Tinder spokesperson said in a comment provided to Engadget.

Tinder already has a similar paid version of this feature called ‘Passport.’ This mainly lets people connect with users in other locations. Last month, Tinder made Passport free for all its users, but that offer expired on April 30th.

Bumble, another dating/friendship app gave users similar leverage due to the pandemic. Have something to add? Let us know in the comment section below.

January 24th, 2020: On Tinder? Who isn’t nowadays! The dating application is not only famous around the globe but also quite the talk of the town in Pakistan as well.

However, one of the biggest concerns Tinder users have is being catfished, and you all know how the rest goes.

To relieve people of this dilemma, Tinder will now issue verified blue tick mark to authentic profiles.

But before that happens, profile owners will have to pass a catfish test. Tinder is launching several other safety features, including giving daters an easy way to call emergency services and a feature that flags potentially offensive messages.

The verification test requires daters to take a selfie in real-time that matches a pose shown by a model in a sample image. If the image is a match, your profile gets verified.

Tinder

However, because there are millions of people who use Tinder all over the globe, there is no telling when the blue-tick will come to Pakistan. Nonetheless, it is one step close to safer dating.

According to The VergTinder is also announcing a partnership with safety app Noonlight to give US-based users free access to the app, as well as a new “safety center” where people can find resources and tools about dating online.

What do you think about this new feature? Have you ever been catfished?

3 Common Mistakes Every New Driver Should Avoid!

mistakes new drivers make

Experienced drivers often end up making careless mistakes, imagine what new drivers must feel like behind the wheel.

At times, the mistakes are petty, but what novice drivers don’t realize is that if it can happen once, it can happen again. And that they won’t be as lucky each time.

Hence, we have compiled a list of 3 mistakes that new drivers tend to make a lot when they sit behind the wheel.

1. Drowsy Driving

If it has been a very long day and you can’t stop yawning, don’t think about driving; instead, take a drop from a friend or get a taxi.

One of the most common mistakes newbies make is falling asleep behind the wheel that often leads to loss of concentration from the road and numbs the brain.

New drivers might not have the experience needed to know when they are too tired to drive, so it’s a smart move to take a cautious approach and only get on the road when you know that you are thinking clearly and have had plenty of sleep.

If you are already on the road, opening the window is not a permanent solution. Instead, find a parking lot or a safe location to take a power nap so that you are back into form.

2. Not Knowing Routes

In bustling cities, not knowing your way around will have you wandering in allies trying to find your way back.

Imagine driving in a city like Karachi, were missing out on a single cut can take you to a whole new area. New drivers can use Google Maps and other applications to guide them.

Moreover, drivers should always check their routes before they leave home, and once again go through all the essential landmarks so that they make fewer mistakes while driving on the road.

3. Overconfidence- It Can Get You Killed!

Young drivers are full of energy and confidence; unfortunately, at times, they have a bit too much of both flowing freely through their veins.

Beginners need to remember that getting carried away can cost them their lives and risks the lives of those around them.

“When you have just passed your test, most people think they have learned all they need to know about driving. But the fact is, the next 3-4 years when you are driving daily is where the real learning will happen. I would encourage all new drivers to be very conscious not to get overconfident and continue to drive at safe speeds and within yourself.” Shared Paul from Motor Veso.

“Two most common mistakes are breaking the speed limit allowed by law and not keeping both hands on the wheel, a big mistake considering they are new to driving. New drivers forget to drive safer during the first year, and, unfortunately, this is the main reason there are many teen driving car accidents.” Marcus Web writes.

Which other mistakes do you think we should add to the list?

Johnson & Johnson Discontinues Talc Powder in US & Canada

Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson has discontinued its world-famous talc-based baby powder products in the United States and Canada. The decision comes in after thousands of lawsuits against the company declined sales.

The lawsuits were filed due to asbestos contamination in the product. On Tuesday, the health care company announced that it had discontinued shipping the talc-based items in the United States and Canada.

Johnsons & Johnsons have faced many lawsuits since 2014, which accused the company of hiding the cancer risks associated with its talc-based baby powder.

Judges in the United States have punished the company with billions of dollars in punitive damages. However, J&J has gotten many of those verdicts reduced or wiped out on appeal.

The chairman of the company’s North America consumer unit, Kathleen Widmer, said that over the coming months, J&J would wind down sales in those markets. However, all existing inventory will be sold through retailers until supplies run out.

According to a company blog post on their website, J&J first began selling baby powder products in the 1890s. 25% of the U.S. relied on the talc-based product, while 75% uses J&J’s corn starch baby powder.

The corn starch baby powder will continue to be sold in the United States and Canada. Widmer said, 75 % of its U.S. baby power customers use the corn starch products while outside the United States, those numbers are reversed.

The talc-based product will continue to be distributed abroad.

“We’re not in the business of confusing customers,” Widmer said.

The decision to discontinue the talc-based powder was made in March during a portfolio assessment related to COVID-19.

“We needed to skinny down to free up space in manufacturing plants to allow for appropriate social distancing”. “We probably would have waited a couple of months otherwise. But we knew the business, which is already small in scale, would continue to decline,” says Widmer.

Talcum powder has long been known for baby products across the globe because the mineral keeps skin dry and prevents diaper rash.

Talc mines can also yield asbestos – a mineral once used in products such as building insulation. Some companies in the same field have discovered that corn starch can offer the same benefits of talc without the asbestos risk.

The company said in an official statement that J&J “remains steadfastly confident in the safety of talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder”. ”

“We will continue to vigorously defend the product, its safety, and the unfounded allegations against it and the company in the courtroom.”

Most dramas currently revolve around a disastrous marriage, struggles with the in-laws, sibling rivalry, illicit relationships, and, of course, the dilemma of the hero. He is divided between two love interests or two wives.

#BoycottUAE Takes Over Pakistani Twitter as the No.1 Trend!

#BoycottUAE
Credits: Hip

Twitter users awoke today to find the hashtag #BoycottUAE trend on no. 1 today in Pakistan, as well as Turkey.

The reason why the hashtag has become a national phenomenon is because of Ankara and the Emirates’ historically strained relationship.

The trend started from Turkish influencer Ali Keskin who started a thread of tweets against the UAE calling for a boycott because the country didn’t support Kashmir when they needed it the most.

Here’s Ali Keskin’s Twitter Thread:

The Internet Splits into Two Over the Tweets

Some support Keskin’s call for boycott, while others have a different opinion.

Etihad’s First-Ever Trips to Israel

Another reason why this trend has a lot of fuel to back the fire is that the UAE’s flag carrier has made its first-ever ‘known’ flight to Israel. Though the countries don’t have any formal ties with one another, the airline’s cargo jet was carrying medical supplies for Palestinians and had landed at Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.

Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Danny Danon, took it to his Twitter to share that he hopes to see passenger planes operating between the two countries shortly.

Pakistan, among other Muslim countries, does not recognize Israel as a state because of its illegal occupation of Palestine. On the other hand, Turkey does not enjoy good relations with Israel.

Whereas Pakistan and Turkey have a good relationship with one another as Pakistan has always supported its sister country and vice versa. One of the most current examples is the popularity and love in the hearts of Pakistanis for the Turkish drama series, Diliris: Ertrugul.

Cambridge University: All Lectures Moved Online Until Summer 2021

Cambridge University

21 May 2020: Cambridge University has moved all their lectures online for the year 2021 (summer). They are the first University to take this precautionary measure for a full academic year.

All “face-to-face lectures” move online for the duration. The institution thought it was likely that social distancing would continue to be required.

Small social groups might as well take place in person, only if they “conform to social-distancing requirements” however, all remaining lectures continue virtually until next year.

A spokesman said: “The University is constantly adapting to changing advice as it emerges during this pandemic. Given that it is likely that social distancing will continue to be required, the University has decided there will be no face-to-face lectures during the next academic year.

Three Pakistani Teachers Shortlisted by Cambridge University UK for ‘Dedicated Teachers’ Award!

“Lectures will continue to be made available online and it may be possible to host smaller teaching groups in person, as long as this conforms to social-distancing requirements. This decision has been taken now to facilitate planning, but as ever, will be reviewed should there be changes to official advice on coronavirus.”

Due to the pandemic, all classes at the University were immediately moved online in March. Exams were also are being carried out virtually.

The Office for Students (OfS) at Cambridge, the higher education regulator urged universities not to promise students that classes will be back in the autumn term. This is because this might not be the case, and everything will take time before coming back to ‘Normal”.

Chief executive at the OfS, Nicola Dandridge, said students should be told what kind of experience they will receive in advance of accepting offers.

28 November 2017: Over time, scholarships have become essential to students all over the world who are willing to graduate with a substantial degree.

The biggest dream of any passionate Pakistani student is to study overseas in his/her dream university, graduate in their desired field with flying colors, develop a career of choice, bag a good job and later, enjoy a luxurious lifestyle.

Fortunately, doing a degree abroad is no longer an impossible dream! A plethora of diverse opportunities from almost every corner of the world is now offered with the right kind of educational advice at leading foreign institutes.

The best part is that many acclaimed global institutes are offering scholarships that enable students to enlarge their educational horizons and go overseas.

One Of The Most Revered Scholarships All Over The World is Gates Cambridge Scholarships.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Up to 90 scholarships are awarded every year.

Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

  • a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • asking to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:
    1. Ph.D. (three-year research-only degree)
    2. MSc or MLitt (two-year research-only degree)
    3. One year postgraduate course (e.g., MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA, etc.)

You can use the form below to quickly check if you are eligible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and, if so, in which of the two application rounds you must use.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit an application for graduate admission, a College place, and funding – including a Gates Cambridge Scholarship – via the University’s Graduate Applicant Portal.

In addition to the section for admission, the University’s graduate application form includes a specific Gates Cambridge section which asks applicants to submit the following:

A 3,000 character (500 words) statement about their fit with the Gates Cambridge program

The statement is used by the Gates Cambridge shortlisting committees to distinguish between candidates who have been highly ranked by departments on academic grounds. It helps our committees identify those candidates who, as well as being academically outstanding, possess a capacity for leadership and commitment to improving the lives of others. This is the only part of the application form where applicants are asked explicitly about their fit with the Gates Cambridge program.

A (non-academic) reference about their fit with Gates Cambridge

The Gates Cambridge reference is used in the same way as the statement – to reduce a large number of well-qualified applicants to those who best match the Gates Cambridge criteria.

Referees may paste/type up to 4,000 characters into the online reference or upload a separate letter; they are also asked some specific questions about how they rate the applicant for the scholarship.

Your referee should be someone of appropriate standing who can answer the question with authority and who will and fully understand the Gates Cambridge criteria. Applicants often ask academics (who can comment on their fit with Gates Cambridge, not just offer a third academic reference), employers, senior figures in voluntary organizations for whom they have worked, and others who can comment on their suitability for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Applicants should not ask family, friends, or those unqualified to provide a useful and appropriate reference.

The Gates Cambridge reference is in addition to the two academic references required by the University for admission.

All applicants must submit an up to date CV/resume.

For a Ph.D. applicant, only a research proposal is also required – if it has not already submitted as part of the application for the course. Where there is specific guidance from the department about word length and format for the research proposal, applicants should follow this. If you are a Ph.D. applicant, but your department does not require a research proposal. You should submit a document as roughly two pages outlining your research plans to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

You can apply at www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk.

What expenses are covered?

This scholarship provides the following benefits :

  • tuition fees
  • maintenance allowance
  • Airfare for two return tickets
  • Family allowance

Deadline:

Commissioner Multan, Shan Ul Haq and Team foodpanda Discuss The Future Of Delivering Essential Items

Commissioner Multan, Shan Ul Haq and Team foodpanda Discuss The Future Of Delivering Essential Items

Multan: Team foodpanda meets with the Commissioner of Multan, Shan ul Haq to discuss the necessary SOP’s and the importance of delivering essentials to those in need. Due to the current turbulent landscape, foodpanda is expanding with the introduction of foodpanda shops while following government regulations for safe delivery.

New feature in the application

In the discussion, team foodpanda presented the introduction of foodpanda shops. The new feature in the application was shown as a channel that can provide support to local administrations during lockdowns. foodpanda shops help connect users to grocery stores, medical stores, and other essential services around their area, limiting the number of people having to leave their homes to get household essentials.

The team also highlighted the importance of delivering these essentials without a set time-limit, as was the case during stricter lockdown restrictions. Other than this, the Commissioner was also updated about the CSR initiatives that the company is taking to ensure that front-line workers are taken care of during this time. A CSR initiative is currently on-going at the Nishtar Hospital in Multan whereby foodpanda is providing free meals to the paramedic staff.

Multan’s great response

In the meeting, the Commissioner also inquired about the response Multan had to foodpanda which has been proven to be overwhelmingly positive. Team foodpanda informed the Commissioner that they will continue to expand the services to all zones city-wide.

As stated by the Government of Pakistan, foodpanda’s Standards of Procedure have been and will continue being upheld. This includes gloves, masks, and personal hand-sanitizers for their riders. Other SOPs such as limiting the number of operations at a given time, limited public interaction, a mandatory 3ft. distance when delivering orders and contact-free delivery have all been put into place nationwide.

17th May 2020: The pandemic has our lives dependent solely on virtual connections. Social media platforms help us stay connected to our loved ones, even during the quarantine. Facebook has brought a new addition to its platform with acquiring ‘Giphy’.

The GIF library will be added to Instagram. It is speculated that the Facebook and Giphy deal was worth $400 million, but neither company has confirmed it.

Facebook Welcomes Giphy as Part of an Instagram team with a Celebration GIF!

Giphy’s majority team will be joining Instagram according to a statement by Senior Director, Natalie Vegel, she further commented,

“For those employees who will not be joining Instagram, we’ve taken extra steps to provide them with generous severance packages to ensure as much of a smooth career transition path as possible.”

Those that will be moving from Giphy’s team will be going to Instagram’s headquarters in Newyork. However, due to the pandemic, the timeframe for the move has not been decided yet.

Facebook Vice President of Product, Vishal Shah spoke about the acquisition of Giphy,

“By bringing Instagram and Giphy together, we can make it easier for people to find the perfect GIFs and stickers in Stories and Direct. Both our services are big supporters of the creator and artist community, and that will continue.”

It was reported by Vishal Shah that “50% of Giphy’s traffic comes from Facebook’s application out of which Instagram accounts for 50% of its parent company’s overall traffic.”

What does this acquisition mean for other Giphy Users?

Giphy was introduced in February 2013 and has since then grown its database to several trillion GIFs. Even after the acquisition, the Giphy library will remain available. Its application programming interfaces and software development kits for third-party developers and partners will also be the open database.

In a blog post reassuring its users Giphy states,

“For our API/SDK partners and developers: Giphy’s GIFs, stickers, emojis, etc. aren’t going anywhere. We will continue to make Giphy openly available to the wider ecosystem.”

Giphy has also spoken about its relationship with Instagram over the years and what this new acquisition has in store for the company.

SocialPubli.com

“We’ve had a lot of fun teaming up with Instagram over the years; Giphy’s stickers were the perfect fit for layering on Instagram Stories, while our GIF search allowed everyone to capture that perfect emotion in Instagram’s DMs. Based on the success of those collaborations (and many others), we know that there are exciting times ahead of us.”

Here Are 5 Eid Outfit Inspirations That You Will Love!

styling on eid
Source/ VeryFilmy

Are you one of those who will dress up like the nines this Eid, or do you intend to just spend your days in pajamas and Netflixing? Well, either way, you’re sorted.

Since Eid is just a week away, countless Muslims around the world are preparing themselves for the fact that the festival this year will be unlike any other, and not in the right way at all.

When Muslims around the world say farewell to Ramadan – they also look forward to the festivities of Eid al-Fitr. Depending on the moon’s sighting, Eid celebrations will commence either on Saturday, May 23, or Sunday, May 24.

For girls, preparing for Eid is a lot about the perfect outfit, matching accessories, and opting for the ideal hairstyle. Choosing a dress type, dress color, appropriate accessories, etc. becomes a challenge when one is busy in life.

The question right now, though, is how to dress up this Eid, as we’re going to have either small gatherings instead of grand dinners and mostly stay in rather than stepping out.

This is why we’ve jotted down some trends you can opt for this Eid.

1. Choosing the colors

Opt wearing colors that are pleasant to the eyes since its boiling hot outside. You don’t want to look like a walking corpse in that black or brown or even gray kurta, pants, and heels when you can choose to don in beautiful pastel colors like yellow, lemon, white, pink, pistachio green, and blue. Hareem Farooq’s last year’s Eid look was spot on, which is why we had to put her in this list for your inspiration.

2. Making the cut

Both long and short length kurtas are the go-to fashion these days. Styling kurtas with light jewelry like pearls or tiny earrings and hear clips would add that oomph to your entire look. Opt for bright embroidery or chikankari. Sadaf Kanwal looks effortlessly chic in this short kurta.

If you’re getting a ready-made ensemble, then you’re sorted, but if you intend to get it stitched, then ask your tailor to decorate the hem of your kameez, the trouser, or the sleeves with pearls or a transparent swath of cloth to add a tinge of sophistication. You can also get a brooch stitched on the shirt with a suspending necklace like chain fastened to both shoulders. Take inspiration from Sonya Hussyn as she looks sophisticated yet stylish in an all-white gharara and kameez.

3. Opting the right fabric

A smile and a bit of colour in these bleak times…. sending love, strength and prayers to you all….stay at home, stay aware, stay sane, eat healthy, build immunity! 💕😊 . . . This haseen jora is by a @saharatifstudio . She’s my childhood friend’s elder sister and makes the most beautiful clothes…💫👌 . . I know most of you don’t feel like smiling at all these days, there’s so much fear and anxiety amongst us, heck I’ve been a wreck all day today and yesterday….but try and smile, laugh a little, watch something funny, ease the stress on your cells which need to be relaxed to fight the virus….. . . May we all find the strength to fight this… May humanity be united in the fight against this damn virus and heal from this in every way, very soon. 🙏🤲 . . #ayeshaomar #bleaktimes #letssmilethroughthis

Forget about the heavy dress materials like silk, jamawar, velvet, etc. and yourself a favor and opt for lawn and cotton, which are your best bets. You can play funky to elegant prints and patterns. These materials are also equipped with the lace extensions and look more feminine. We’re digging Omer’s looks in the above boomerang and how elegant the starlet looks in a blend of pink and dull gold.

4. Accessories

Wear simple, long earrings that touch your shoulders to add a few inches to your figure. No matter how small they are, wear heels to add a finishing touch to your look. Carry a clutch or structured purse, and not your handbag. And match your heels to the color of the embroidery rather than the base fabric.

5. Ditch everything

If nothing works for you and you’re too lazy to get up and dress yourselves during quarantine, then chill in your PJs and snack on popcorn while you binge-watch Friends.

As the scientists and researchers try to find a cure for COVID-19, no one, as of yet, has been successful. Just recently, Chinese scientists have claimed that they are developing a new drug to fight COVID-19. They said that the medication could help stop the coronavirus pandemic, and maybe without a vaccine.

The drug is being developed at China’s Peking University and has been tested successfully on animals. Moreover, researchers have said the drug could also reduce the recovery time for the patients suffering from COVID-19.

Test results of the drug

Test results also showed that the drug has the potential to offer short-term immunity from the virus.

Here’s what Sunney Xie, director of the university’s Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics, told AFP,

“The drug has been successful at the animal testing stage. When we injected neutralizing antibodies into infected mice, after five days the viral load was reduced by a factor of 2,500,”

He also said that the results indicate that the effect of this potential drug is very therapeutic.

It is said that the drug works by generating neutralizing antibodies that are produced by the human immune system to prevent the virus infecting cells. This was carried by testing the blood of 60 patients who had recovered from COVID-19.

He further added that “The hope is these neutralized antibodies can become a specialized drug that would stop the pandemic.”

Potential cure and shorter recovery time

Moreover, a study on the team’s research suggests that using the antibodies provides a potential “cure” for the disease and reduces the recovery time.

Xie said his team had been working effortlessly searching for the antibody.

He said,

“Our expertise is single-cell genomics rather than immunology or virology. When we realized that the single-cell genomic approach could effectively find the neutralizing antibody, we were thrilled.”

He also added that the drug should be ready later this year and in time for any potential winter outbreak of the virus.

What are your thoughts about this? Do you think this drug has the potential to beat COVID-19? Let us know in the comments below.

The Independent Urdu covered an inspiring story of a Britisher who has settled in Sindh and now teaches the English language to children.

Steve is originally from Wales, United Kingdom. He traveled to Pakistan as a tourist and decided to stay. The story was brought to light by a famous Sindhi politician, Ayaz Latif Palejo, “This young Britisher (Steve) from Wales, UK, has been teaching kids in a remote rural School of Sindh for the last eight years. Look at his humility, commitment to education, and command of Sindhi Language.”

Steve settled in Sindh and became a teacher. Watch the full interview here:

Steve

Yes, its hot here in Sindh, but people are good here too. The people give good response and students have a keen interest in studying. This is why the weather is not a big problem for me,” says Steve.

“I came to Sindh to travel, but people gave me love, and I wanted to give back to them by giving them education,” he said.

Steve is highly dedicated to teaching students. You would be surprised to know that he has been here for ten years now and has no plans to return. He teaches English to local people and students.

What is funny and astounding at the same time is that Steve’s stay in interior Sindh has taught him the regional language so well that he speaks Sindhi fluently. After school time, his other activities include wooden furniture for students, and even students help him out too.

Why Britisher learned to Speak Sindhi

In another interview, he revealed, “Once I remember a student invited me to his home. I went to his village, and there were a lot of people speaking in Sindhi. I couldn’t understand it, so from that day I decided to learn Sindhi.”

I am enjoying in Sindh, and people are welcoming here. This is true,” he added.

It is not for the first time that foreigners have appreciated the locals welcoming behavior. Since the PTI government has been revamping the tourist spots in the North, more and more tourists visit the country.

Coca-Cola & Carlsberg To Introduce Plant-Based Bottles

Source: LADBible

Beverage brand Coca-Cola and Carlsberg are set to introduce plant-based bottles shortly. These will degrade in a year when left under natural conditions to decompose. L’oreal and Danone are also thinking about making the much-awaited switch to the plant-based bottles.

Dutch company Avantium, BillerudKorsnäs, and bottle manufacturer Alpla are collaborating on “The Paper Bottle Project.” It is aimed to develop a plastic bottle made from plant sugars rather than fossil fuels. This project is now backed by beverage giants, Coca-cola, Carlsberg, and others.

What is the Paper Bottle Project?

Avantium is providing a much-needed alternative to the plastic bottles that are polluting our world. It is reducing the market’s reliance on fossil fuels by developing an entirely plant-based plastic. This new plastic-like material is made from corn, wheat, and beet sugars. It will be sturdy enough to hold drinks and ensure that the contents remain cold.

Carlsberg paper bottle prototype

The plastic – known as ‘PEF’ – could be used to line the cardboard bottle from the inside, to make them both functional and biodegradable. This PEF reportedly has better thermal barrier properties than standard PEF.

This plant-based plastic polymer is 100 percent recyclable. If left in a composter, it will rot within a year, and in a few years if simply left outside. Whereas the standard plastic bottled can take 100’s of years to decompose.

Avantium’s Chief Executive, Tom Van Aken says,

“This plastic has very attractive sustainability credentials because it uses no fossil fuels and can be recycled – but would also degrade in nature much faster than normal plastics do.”

The companies hope to produce new plastic by 2023. In a press release, Carlsberg explained:

“We are working on developing the world’s first ‘paper’ beer bottle made from sustainably-sourced wood fibers that are both 100% bio-based and fully recyclable. We now have two new research prototypes of the Green Fiber beer Bottle, which are the first ‘paper bottles’ that are able to contain beer.”

On Tuesday, the adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenues, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, announced that the government would not impose a new tax in the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2020-21.

The decision was made to facilitate the industry and help check the contraction of the economy. “No new tax would be introduced in the upcoming budget, and we will not take any tax measure that overburdens our industry,” Shaikh said while talking to a private news channel.

Negative Impact of Coronavirus

The coronavirus has affected our national economy like other countries. Pakistan will be taking measures to reduce its expenditures by adopting austerity measures. He emphasized that the government will have to work hard in the coming days to reduce the budget deficit to 9%.

The PTI government had inherited $20 billion in the budget deficit, which had been reduced to $3 billion by adopting policies.

He said the primary objective of the government was to provide relief to the people in the next budget. Due to the efforts of the State Bank of Pakistan, reserves have increased to 12 billion dollars. Unfortunately, foreign remittances decreased by 6% due to the deadly virus.

Oil Prices

He said that the government would decide between cutting oil prices in the next two to four weeks as the ECC will take up the decision in the context of analyzing its price and attached cost of insurance to get a lifetime opportunity to get benefits out of it.

He said the government would try its best to maintain petroleum prices at the current level. Islamabad is expecting good news on account of a $1.8 billion deferred payment facility from G20 countries.

Generate Employment

The government’s focus right now is to increase economic activities and generate employment opportunities in the country in specific sectors. He said the government would announce a package in the upcoming budget.

Illegal Cigarette Trade

Dr. Hafeez Shaikh said that the prime minister had issued instructions to take strict action against the illegal cigarette trade.

The withholding tax was brought down to Rs. 10 per kg on tobacco production. He said that efforts would be made to bring the informal sector into the tax net.

Under the Ehsaas Program, the government is giving economic aid to the people through the physical stimulus package, with Rs. 12,000 per person.
