Coca-Cola & Carlsberg To Introduce Plant-Based Bottles

Source: LADBible

Beverage brand Coca-Cola and Carlsberg are set to introduce plant-based bottles shortly. These will degrade in a year when left under natural conditions to decompose. L’oreal and Danone are also thinking about making the much-awaited switch to the plant-based bottles.

source: evening standard

Dutch company Avantium, BillerudKorsnäs, and bottle manufacturer Alpla are collaborating on “The Paper Bottle Project.” It is aimed to develop a plastic bottle made from plant sugars rather than fossil fuels. This project is now backed by beverage giants, Coca-cola, Carlsberg, and others.

What is the Paper Bottle Project?

Avantium is providing a much-needed alternative to the plastic bottles that are polluting our world. It is reducing the market’s reliance on fossil fuels by developing an entirely plant-based plastic. This new plastic-like material is made from corn, wheat, and beet sugars. It will be sturdy enough to hold drinks and ensure that the contents remain cold.

Carlsberg paper bottle prototype

The plastic – known as ‘PEF’ – could be used to line the cardboard bottle from the inside, to make them both functional and biodegradable. This PEF reportedly has better thermal barrier properties than standard PEF.

This plant-based plastic polymer is 100 percent recyclable. If left in a composter, it will rot within a year, and in a few years if simply left outside. Whereas the standard plastic bottled can take 100’s of years to decompose.

Avantium’s Chief Executive, Tom Van Aken says,

“This plastic has very attractive sustainability credentials because it uses no fossil fuels and can be recycled – but would also degrade in nature much faster than normal plastics do.”

The companies hope to produce new plastic by 2023. In a press release, Carlsberg explained:

“We are working on developing the world’s first ‘paper’ beer bottle made from sustainably-sourced wood fibers that are both 100% bio-based and fully recyclable. We now have two new research prototypes of the Green Fiber beer Bottle, which are the first ‘paper bottles’ that are able to contain beer.”

Tax

On Tuesday, the adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenues, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, announced that the government would not impose a new tax in the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2020-21.

The decision was made to facilitate the industry and help check the contraction of the economy. “No new tax would be introduced in the upcoming budget, and we will not take any tax measure that overburdens our industry,” Shaikh said while talking to a private news channel.

Negative Impact of Coronavirus

The coronavirus has affected our national economy like other countries. Pakistan will be taking measures to reduce its expenditures by adopting austerity measures. He emphasized that the government will have to work hard in the coming days to reduce the budget deficit to 9%.

The PTI government had inherited $20 billion in the budget deficit, which had been reduced to $3 billion by adopting policies.

He said the primary objective of the government was to provide relief to the people in the next budget. Due to the efforts of the State Bank of Pakistan, reserves have increased to 12 billion dollars. Unfortunately, foreign remittances decreased by 6% due to the deadly virus.

Oil Prices

He said that the government would decide between cutting oil prices in the next two to four weeks as the ECC will take up the decision in the context of analyzing its price and attached cost of insurance to get a lifetime opportunity to get benefits out of it.

He said the government would try its best to maintain petroleum prices at the current level. Islamabad is expecting good news on account of a $1.8 billion deferred payment facility from G20 countries.

Generate Employment

The government’s focus right now is to increase economic activities and generate employment opportunities in the country in specific sectors. He said the government would announce a package in the upcoming budget.

Illegal Cigarette Trade

Dr. Hafeez Shaikh said that the prime minister had issued instructions to take strict action against the illegal cigarette trade.

The withholding tax was brought down to Rs. 10 per kg on tobacco production. He said that efforts would be made to bring the informal sector into the tax net.

Ehsaas Program

Under the Ehsaas Program, the government is giving economic aid to the people through the physical stimulus package, with Rs. 12,000 per person.

Thai Govt Approves Thai Airways Bankruptcy Plans

Thai Airways

Thailand Cabinet has approved a plan to restructure troubled Thai Airways International finances through a bankruptcy court. The Southeast Asian country’s prime minister revealed this news on Tuesday, May 19th.

The notion for the airline industry‘s court-led reorganization replaced an
an earlier proposal for government-funded rescue package sharply criticized in the country.

Impact of Government Directives on Airlines

The state-controlled airline’s issues are the latest example of how the coronavirus pandemic is crippling the global airline industry and how the virus is leading the economy into a depression.

Colombia’s Avianca Holdings and Virgin Australia Holdings have filed for bankruptcy protection since the pandemic broke out.

Airlines around the world have grounded the bulk of their capacity due to government directives and border restrictions.

Thai Airways, however, had been in trouble well before the coronavirus outbreak because of fierce competition from budget airlines and high prices.

“The government has reviewed all dimensions. We have decided to petition for restructuring and not let Thai Airways go bankrupt. The airline will continue to operate,” Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told reporters at a news briefing. “The courts will protect Thai Airways, and a professional will be appointed to oversee the restructuring,” Mr. Prayut said, adding the airline’s workers will continue to have jobs.

The Central Bankruptcy Court

Thai Airways even said the central federal court would enforce the project, and the operation will continue as usual.

“Thai Airways will not be dissolved or go into liquidation or be declared bankrupt,” Thai Airways acting president Chakkrit Parapuntakul said in a statement.

Operations, including passenger and cargo transportation, will continue in parallel with the plan, he said. Thai Airways shares surged 11.7 percent on Tuesday, but are still down by about a third this year.

The global airline industry is facing a severe financial crisis due to coronavirus travel restrictions with a growing list of casualties.

No flights before June 30th

Thai Airways has up to 80 planes and has 22,000 employees.

The International Air Transport Association has said that air travel will not return to normal until 2023, putting more pressure on airlines worldwide.

Avianca, the state held national flag carrier in Colombia, filed for bankruptcy in the US earlier this month for Chapter 11. At the same time, Virgin Australia, Australia’s second-biggest airline, entered regulation in April after refusing to obtain a federal bailout.

Seven-Word Lessons Is Educating Children Through Billboard Ads

Seven-Word Lessons Is Educating Children Through Billboards

The pandemic has caused countries to go into lockdowns; people have remained indoors for more than two months. It has become difficult for parents to manage home-schooling their children and work from home at the same time. To make things a tad bit easier, marketing agency, Work in Progress, is bringing education to the streets.

WIP’s ‘Seven-Word Lessons’ are aimed at providing children with teachings on different subjects on billboards around the country.

Source: Seven lessons, twitter

WIP has done this to engage grade-school children in a fun new way. Children can experience a completely different form of virtual learning. A new lesson will appear every day at noon on digital billboards in various cities such as Chicago, Denver, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, and Washington D.C.

These billboards are located in areas that have the most housing societies to reach the most children. However, those who do not live in the vicinity of the advertisements can access these lessons online on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Source: Sevenlessons.com

Teachers from all over the country can submit their lessons on www.sevenlessons.com. Some of the first lessons that have been broadcasted are, “Square is just a rectangular rhombus” and “Greenland sharks live for 400 years.”

WIP Co-Founder Matt Talbot mentions that the idea came from their very own experiences. The employees and partners have experienced difficulties in home-schooling their children, and that is what has inspired this latest innovation.

Talbot further mentions,

“The struggle is not just to teach them, but keep them entertained and engaged. Teachers had to adapt to not having their classrooms overnight, and parents had to become teachers overnight. Everyone is also trying to create some new routine that school used to provide, and so we really liked the idea of putting these lessons up at the same time every day to help provide that in some small way.”

With classrooms closed, we’re bringing education to the streets. Seven words at a time. Teachers, send us your #SevenWordLessons!

A post shared by Seven-Word Lessons (@sevenwordlessons) on

The campaign will run over 400 lessons, sourced from school teachers who are given credits for the lessons they send in. WIP mentions that the submitted readings will be compensated $25 for every experience that gets published on the digital billboards. They have a choice of donating this money to DonorsChoose, which is a non-profit educational organization that helps classrooms in need.

In April, it was found that a teenage boy from Karachi’s Bihar Colony found himself with severe mental health issues after playing PUBG.

The use of internet has increased over the past few months. Children have been home as schools are shut down. Online classes have been taking place, and since outdoor activities are restricted, video games have become a haven for teenage boys.

“Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent and recurring gaming behavior where a player begins to give priority to gaming over other daily activities. While gaming disorder affects a small proportion of the people who play video games, anyone who spends excessive time gaming is vulnerable to this condition,” says director of mental health and behavioral sciences, Fortis Healthcare, Dr. Samir Parikh.

World Health Organization (WHO) officially categorized gaming disorder as a disease in the International Classification of Diseases in the previous year. The disorder is similar to gambling disorder.

What is PUBG?

Android is Getting a Rival That Will Change the SmartPhone Market

May 19, 2020: Android is most likely getting a rival that will change the smartphone market. It is one of the most used operating systems in the world installed on over 2.5 billion devices worldwide.

A third of the world’s population uses Android!

The bottom line is that Android is widely used across the globe. StatCounter claims that Android alone acquires 70.68% of the mobile OS marketplace.

Previously, the company’s biggest rival during this period was Apple’s iOS, but given the high price point of the devices, it captures only 28.79% of the mobile OS market.

For users across the world, the leading OS choice was always either Apple or Android, but the game is about to change.

Huawei has entered the OS market. The United States announced this week that they are extending Huawei’s contract to do business in the country.

During May 2019, Trump first announced that Huawei was placed on a list of companies American firms were barred from doing business with.

However, Huawei had been given a series of temporary licenses to operate in the country. The latest license has expired on May 15. Whether the company chooses to extend is license further or not, it may decide the time is right to go their own way.

Last year, Huawei shipped 240.6million smartphones, compared to Apple‘s 198.1million, and first-placed Samsung‘s 298.1million smartphone.

Report: Huawei Surpassed Apple to Become 2nd Largest Smartphone Vendor

“The operating systems of Android and Apple have enjoyed massive sales in the world as consumers have become accustomed to them. Huawei is a latecomer, so it would be very difficult to surpass the operating systems of Android and Apple.”

Let us know what you think of how the smartphone market will change with the newest edition in the comment box below.

February 25, 2020: Android happens to be a popular software across the globe, as it is easy to use, mature, and packed with features.

As the days are coming closer to the launch of Android 11, everyone seems to be waiting for the goodies it will bring to the table this time around.

How to Switch from IOS to Android

Many new features will become a part of the latest Android 11, such as the native screen recorder, chat bubbles, and others.

At this point, downloading the newest version is not worth it, as many bugs need to be worked upon.

Android 11

1. Airplane mode that happens to kill BlueTooth will not work anymore. Previously, while activating the airplane mode, the BlueTooth would close, which did not make much sense as plenty of people happen to connect their headphones/AirPods on the plane.

2. If you are someone who uses a screen protector, then this feature will interest you the most. Increase touch sensitivity promotes a better user experience.

3. Conversation bubbles was initially an Android ten feature. However, it will also become a feature of Android 11, adopted by more developers and OEMs shortly.

4. With the newest software update, Android will introduce a Multi-colored Quick Settings icon that will allow you to change the colors of individual quick settings icons.

5. Applications will now be permitted access to certain areas of your Filesystem. Scoped storage is the newest feature that will be introduced, keeping in mind the security concerns with the previous software.

6. Finally, a native screen recorder for android phones! One of the most exciting features for android 11 will be a screen recorder.

7. Don’t you hate it when you receive a notification while you’re recording? Worry no more! The newest Android 11 will not let you mute notifications while you’re recording.

8. More granular back gesture tweaking: Android 11, fortunately, will be allowing sliders to let you control the sensitivity of the back gesture, one for the left side of the screen and other for the right.

9. The newest Android 11 will have better support for curved/waterfall displays, which will allow developers to specify the interactive area of a screen.

10.  Scrolling screenshots are finally rolling out with the newest update.

There are tons of other updates that are anticipated with the newest software update. Stay tuned to Brandsynario for more news and updates on the Android 11.

World Health Organization: Disinfectant Sprays Are Harmful

World

19th May 2020: World Health Organization (WHO) has recently released a document that emphasizes that disinfectant sprays are harmful. The report comprises of some essential points regarding cleaning and disinfecting.

The authorities warn that spraying disinfectants on streets poses health risks. The practice does not help eliminate the virus.

“Spraying or fumigation of outdoor spaces, such as streets or marketplaces, is not recommended to kill the COVID-19 virus or other pathogens because disinfectant is inactivated by dirt and debris. Even in the absence of organic matter, chemical spraying is unlikely to adequately cover all surfaces for the duration of the required contact time needed to inactivate pathogens.”

Disinfectants can cause different health issues.

Spraying toxic chemicals such as chlorine on humans can cause multiple health conditions such as eye and skin irritation, bronchospasm, and gastrointestinal effects.

“Spraying toxic chemicals can be dangerous for human health as it does not reduce an infected person’s ability to spread the virus through droplets or contact.”

Solar Lockdown: Myths About Freezing Temperatures and Earthquakes Debunked

Solar Lockdown: Myths About Freezing Temperatures and Earthquakes Debunked
Source: Forbes

As we remain quarantined in our homes, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt life as we know it. Scientists have reported that the Sun has also gone into a lockdown of its own kind.

The Sun is said to have gone into a state called the ‘solar minimum’ and is about to enter the most profound period of ‘sunshine recession’ as sunspots are virtually not visible at all. Some reports suggest that it has been almost 100 days this year when the Sun has shown zero sunspots.

Astronomer Dr. Tony Phillips warns,

“Sunspot counts suggest it is one of the deepest of the past century. The Sun’s magnetic field has become weak, allowing extra cosmic rays into the solar system. Excess cosmic rays pose a health hazard to astronauts and polar air travelers, affect the electro-chemistry of Earth’s upper atmosphere, and may help trigger lightning.”

What is a Solar Minimum?

The NASA Science Website states,

“Every 11 years or so, sunspots fade away, bringing a period of relative calm. This is called solar minimum, and it’s a regular part of the sunspot cycle. While intense activity such as sunspots and solar flares subside during solar minimum, that doesn’t mean the Sun becomes dull. Solar activity simply changes form.”

Source: Times Now

Should We Be Worried About the Solar Minimum?

According to a report by NASA Global Climate Change, we should not be worried about freezing temperatures or a mini ice age, earthquakes, or any other problems that the solar minimum of 1600 brought.

Here’s what the report says on the grand solar minimum and the effect of it on climate change in 2020:

“But how big of an effect might a Grand Solar Minimum have? In terms of climate forcing – a factor that could push the climate in a particular direction – solar scientists estimate it would be about -0.1 W/m2, the same impact of about three years of current carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration growth. Thus, a new Grand Solar Minimum would only serve to offset a few years of warming caused by human activities.”

Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels we humans burn are said to be SIX times greater than the possible effects from a Grand Solar Minimum!
Source: The Wire
The NASA report further states:

“Even if a Grand Solar Minimum were to last a century, global temperatures would continue to warm. Because more factors than just variations in the Sun’s output change global temperatures on Earth, the most dominant of those today being the warming coming from human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.”

What should we be doing about the solar minimum?

Nothing. There is no need to panic about it. There will be no freezing temperatures, nor would there be any significant changes. Instead, according to NASA, it seems like we should watch out for our greenhouse gas emissions that are genuinely harming the Earth and our environment.

10 Tearjerker Movies You Can Watch During This Lockdown

tearjerker movies

Not everyone enjoys a movie that will leave them in tears, but something is comforting about a cathartic cry. Maybe watching a sad film in the middle of a global pandemic isn’t your idea of escapism. Or perhaps you’d rather have another reason to cry it out. Don’t worry; there are happy endings in some of these plot lines – just tread carefully.

Some of these movies will leave you wanting to call your mom, dad, grandma, sister, brother, or best friend. Others will make you want to dip into a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and stay in bed for a few extra hours. Either way, clear your schedule.

Here are 10 of our top picks for you during this lockdown, and we guarantee you will love them all.

1. Pursuit of Happyness

This movie is will certainly leave you sobbing if you’re a softy like me. The tale revolves around Chris Gardner (Will Smith) and his young son (Jaden Smith), who have been evicted from their apartment with nowhere to go. Chris takes on an unpaid internship and does everything he can to ensure that his little family has a better life.

2. A Walk to remember

This probably is the most underrated Nicholas Sparks tear-jerker. Shane West and Mandy Moore star as two teens who are poles apart from each other, but after episodes of drama between them, the two fall head over heels with each other. They might be kids, but their love comes up against some real adult stuff. Plus, the soundtrack of the movie is a treat for your ears.

3. Goodwill Hunting

Will Hunting (Matt Damon) has an impressively high IQ but works as a janitor at MIT. However, after school hours, Will solves an impossible math equation, and his talent is discovered by Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård). But a hiccup comes in between, and Will gets arrested. He then vows to get help from therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams).

4. Inside Out

This is a personal favorite, and if you better grab a tissue box because those tears ain’t stopping once you press play on this treat. Nothing quite brings on the feeling like an animated film about them. Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) has a lot of emotions, and this movie examines all of them through cartoon personifications voiced by Amy Poehler, The Office’s Phyllis Smith, Mindy Kaling, and more.

5. The Notebook

How many of you girls grew up in the hopes of finding someone like Noah? Ryan Gosling (Noah) and Rachel McAdams (Allie) received most of the attention in this Nicholas Sparks drama. Still, it was Gena Rowlands and James Garner who brought home the emotional impact of this happy/ sad love story of a couple who genuinely stay together forever.

6. Coco

You should completely trust Disney/Pixar to make an animated kids movie about death that entertains children while reducing adults to sobbing messes. Coco focuses on themes of family and preserving the memory of those who came before you. It’s also visually stunning, taking you through the world of the dead as well as the living.

7. Hitachi

I don’t remember crying so much over any movie, but this. Starring Richard Gere, the plot is based on a true story and is about a professor who finds an abandoned dog and takes him home. Over some time, he forms an unbreakable bond with the dog that most humans are unable to build.
