Teachers Spotted Taking Bribes From Students During Practicals

Yesterday, Shafqat Mahmood shared the incident of action taken against a board official who was caught helping his son cheat. While some appreciated him, others mentioned various other problematic instances of Pakistan’s education system. Amongst these instances, were videos of students openly copying during exams. But the most controversial video shared would probably be the one where a teacher was spotted taking bribes.

In the video taken with a hidden camera, you can see three men sitting at a table receiving practical registers from students. Seeing as the educational system in government schools is not as strict as it should be, it is expected for students to not have done their work. So, the students who have not maintained their practical registers obviously would end up failing. But the video shows those students approaching the men and submitting bribes, which the men are readily accepting.

People also wanted to direct the Federal Minister of Education’s attention towards the Sindh board. In order to do that, they shared a video from a time when an exam was being conducted. But the environment sure doesn’t seem like it. It looks more like a party with songs in the background and some students making small talk while others copying answers.

Consequences of taking bribes in education

Are we not going to talk about what the consequences of such an act will be? Already, a large population in Pakistan is illiterate and the ones that are literate, most of them stopped going to school after a certain grade. Now, just imagine that they sought education until tenth grade. Hence, we will be attributing them as tenth-grade graduates. But in reality, they barely went to school and they passed because they submitted bribes in exchange for a passing grade. Is that what we want to promote; an illiterate next generation?

Are we really ready to hand over the reins of the country to the youth who has been trained like this; not preparing practical registers and bribing officials? Are we not going to set better examples for the youth?

Xiaomi Corp. has officially become the world’s second-biggest smartphone maker. This report is concluded on the basis of the past quarter following an 83% jump in shipments. The pandemic hit all tech corporations however, none have experienced a bounce-back this incredible.

Historic Development

This makes for the first occasion for Xiaomi to break into the top two. Xiaomi is the Chinese maker of everything from rice cookers to gaming monitors and now it has made its name. Historically, the top two have been dominated by Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. 

Huawei Technologies also came close to owning this position. However, only briefly after, it got disrupted due to sanctions that cut it off from essential chip supplies last year. It was this withdrawal from the smartphone market that encouraged other Chinese vendors to up their game.

Xiaomi has become particularly active since then, introducing two flagship devices within the first four months. Its Mi 11 Ultra device features one of the largest camera sensors in the industry.

Apple versus Xiaomi

Compared to Samsung and Apple, Xiaomi is much cheaper. Its average selling price is around 40% and 75% cheaper respectively, reported by researchers. Hence, the major priority of Xiaomi this year has been to increase the sales of its high-end devices. For instance, the Mi 11 Ultra, however, seems like a tough battle. With Oppo and Vivo, sharing the same objective with a more strict marketing practice, Xiaomi is in tough waters.

The biggest reason for growth for Xiaomi has been overseas growth. The corp has increased shipments by more than 300% in Latin America, 150% across Africa and 50% in Western Europe. The Chinese maker has spent the first half of the year contesting the title of biggest smartphone maker in China. Now, in the international landscape, it has even beaten Apple.

Another reason why Xiaomi was able to overtake is also that the other companies were quiet. Apple’s second-quarter is quiet because it prepares for the launch of new products. The iPhone maker has asked suppliers to build as many as 90 million next-generation iPhones this year. The increased supply will ensure greater sales hopefully.

While we get flooded by news where men suppress women in their own households, it is an amazing feeling to see a man encouraging his wife to be more independent. In recent events, someone made a video of a Pakistani husband teaching his wife how to ride a bike. The video went viral all over social media.

The video shows a clear (non-traffic infested) road. On the roadside, you can see a man helping a woman on the bike and giving her riding lessons. Alongside the bike, on the pavement, you can see two young boys running alongside the bike, cheering them on.

It is an amazing achievement because it will give a sense of camaraderie to other women who are not able to gather enough courage. CM Removed Board Official For Helping Son Cheat In Exam

There are many education boards in Pakistan. Each of them is important to the province they are in. In Karachi alone, you can find more than one kind of education board. However, if we look at cheating, the condition is pretty much the same everywhere. All over the province, we see numerous cases of exam cheating every year. From copying papers to handing notes through windows, what is it that the children have not tried?

While the condition of the board may have gotten a little better, there is still a lot of room left. Board exams are made from the same syllabus every year, with slight differences. Even if someone goes into the paper with good preparation, they may be held back because of a cheater. However, as recent news tells us, it is not just the children who are encouraging this behaviour. The CM KP has recently removed a board official due to them helping their son cheat.

The Chemistry Board Exam

A while back, a chemistry exam was taking place. Each student was either trying their best or trying to catch a glance. Among all this, one of the students was caught cheating on a paper. This was the son of the controller of examination in Malakand, Mian Wazir Jan. Apparently, his son was copying notes and answers from resources while in a room locked from outside. This was an attempt to make sure no one walked into that room.

However, spokespeople of media found out about this and then a video was released. In the video, one could see that the student was indeed copying answers from a resource. This is highly unethical and inappropriate. It shows that one is using their examination powers for the worst. Not only has the board official been removed by CM KP but the student will face consequences too. One cannot just abuse this form of power and expect to get away with it. Twitter had a lot to say on the matter too.

Improving Education in Pakistan

Rather than helping students cheat, the officials should be attempting to improve the education system. Altering the syllabus and making sure students learn from it, should be priority number one. How can we hope to move forward as a nation if the education system is lagging behind?

17-Year-Old Baloch Biker Girl Dressed As A Boy Gets Her Learner’s Permit

Media is not always negative, and the recent events in Balochistan are evidence of that. A publication covered the story of a Baloch biker girl some time ago who dresses up as a boy to be able to ride her motorcycle. This is because the culture of the province does not allow a girl to ride a bike. But she is not defying culture for personal gain, she is doing it to help her father.

Every day, Khadija tul Kubra, disguises herself as a boy to drop her siblings at school. She has been doing this since the age of 17. Doing this helps her fulfill her dream every day; the dream of being independent when moving in the public sphere. This story was covered by a publication on the 8th of July and instantly gained traction.

Following that, Quetta’s Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, Gul Said Khan Afridi, invited Khadija and issued her the learner’s permit within 5 days of the news. They have also promised her a motorcycle license by next week.

Khadija shares her opinions

As a follow-up story, the same publication yet again contacted her. It was at that time, Khadia said that her story is “a step for other girls who really want to support their parents in practical life.”

It is common knowledge how girls feel uncomfortable and harassed in public transport when they have to travel. The better solution, Khadija believes, is that these girls should start riding motorcycles. Sharing her own feelings, she said,

“Riding bikes on the streets of Quetta has given her much confidence. She assumes the same will be the case for many other girls in the city”.

Girls’ mobility in Balochistan

Knowing that Khadija, stepping out, will keep her parents scared for her safety, she decided to dress up as a boy on her father’s advice. This was a piece of logical advice because Balochistan is a province hugely dominated by men. In just 2021, it registered 28,700 motorcyclists, and not one of them was a woman.

According to Police data, since 90’s there have only been three licenses for motorcycle riders issued to females. SSP Afridi said traffic police would continue extending support for girls who wanted to ride motorbikes in Quetta so that more girls would start becoming visible.

Seeing the story of Khadija, it is quite possible that there are more riders who stay hidden. The police say they will support them should they choose to reveal themselves.

SSP Afridi said in the interview,

“If girl motorcyclists will be on roads, traffic police would be available for their protection and assistance.”

Baloch biker girl changing mindsets

Until the mindsets change, Khadija continues to drop her younger siblings to school. She also goes to her university after that on the same bike. And she continues to convince the parents of her friends as well to let her female friends ride bikes and feel empowered.

The next dream for Khadija, now, is to be able to ride her bike in her own clothes. She wants to see other girls riding in their clothes and not disguises. How much time will it take for the dream to be realized is something we will have to wait and see.

Adidas Unveils World’s First Liquid Billboard Featuring Hijabi Swimmer

When you launch a product, it is very important that it gets an iconic introduction. And if the brand is Adidas then you can rest assured that the launch is going to be grand. Would you not call the world’s first liquid billboard iconic, grand, or majestic for launching a product line?

The idea behind the billboard is to launch an inclusive swimwear collection. How can one show their brand (if it’s sports-related) to be inclusive? Simple; use women. Stereotypically, when sports are concerned, males are automatically assumed to be the target audience. But to make it gender inclusive, you feature women in it.

That said, women are beginning to take part in sports. But considering the dresses for sportswomen are comparatively shorter and more revealing than that of men, it excludes many women. But with this billboard promotion, Adidas has kept it inclusive of even those women who do not want to show much of their skin.

Havas developed this campaign. The basis of it was in the survey that showed only 12% women in UAE were comfortable wearing swimwear in public. The reasons are mostly body shaming and lack of privacy.

World’s First Liquid Billboard

The billboard was installed on a Dubai beach. It was a 5-meter high and 3-meter deep swimming pool, made of reinforced transparent acrylic. Moreover, at one point it can hold 11,500 gallons of water (equivalent of 163 bathtubs). The billboard also had a camera fitted inside. Women, then, in proximity were invited for a swim.

Senior Brand Director at Adidas, Amrith Gopinath, said, “Our belief is that nobody should be prevented from enjoying the benefits of being in and around the water, hence the recent launch of our diversified product offering for all women and our burkini collection.”

He further added,

“Each piece is also carefully crafted to ensure that additional fabric does not reduce a swimmer’s ability to move in the water. The range went through a detailed testing process with consumer groups across multiple regions to help find the perfect balance of fit, features, performance and coverage.”

The footage, attained from the billboard showing women in burkini, was streamed on the largest digital screens in the city. This act ensured that the promotional activity did not stay limited to only the people hanging around the billboard but to the masses, getting the most reach possible.

According to sources, this is quite a neat device. It can magnetically attach itself to the back of an iPhone 12. It can work with any of the variants of the iPhone 12. The device even aligns itself properly with the phone so there is no problem in holding it. The MagSafe battery pack has quite an ample capacity. It can partially charge an iPhone 12 when the phone battery has been drained. One of the best features is the ability to charge both of them at once.

If you wish to use your phone’s charging port, then just plug the power source into the battery pack. Not only will the pack charge, but it will charge the phone too. Apple recommends that you use a 20W or higher power adaptor with USB-C to lightning cable. Additionally, if you plug in your iPhone to charge, the MagSafe battery pack will charge too. This is certainly an ingenious development on behalf of Apple. However, it is yet to be tested more for feedback.

Innovative Minds:

Apple also says that iOS 14.7 and higher, is required to run this accessory. So, if you have an older model of iPhone, then you will have to upgrade the phone. According to them, the iPhone might get slightly warm while charging. To reduce that, the battery pack might limit charging to 80%. The notification bar will tell the user when the phone is fully charged. If the charging has halted at 80%, users can press an option and force a charge.

The current price of the MagSafe battery pack is $99. It will begin delivering from July 19th,2021. So, hold on to your gadgets because a new product is on its way. Apple released this quite stealthily and it is amazing!

The accused has issued a statement on social media regarding the scandal and it is problematic. She has basically confessed to plagiarising by saying fashion trends exist to be used again.

Pakistani designers are notorious for copying designs. Every other lawn print and kurta will be exposed at one time or another to have been a copy of an international designer. ‘Inspiration’ is what Pakistani designers call this but we believe the definition of that will have to be revisited. 

We have so much potential if we look at the work we can produce and the designing etc. However, if we make it a rule to not copy, we can move mountains with our creative industry.

Pakistan – 13 July 2021: Standard Chartered Bank announced the completion of five successful years of its flagship Goal Programme in Pakistan.

Goal is the Bank’s award-winning, sport-for-development programme that provides financial education and life-skills training to girls aged between 10 and 24. The objective of the Goal programme is to empower young women as economic leaders.

Goal was launched in Pakistan in 2016 and since its launch, we have impacted more than 16,000 adolescent girls’ lives in Pakistan. It is present in 47 schools across Karachi and Islamabad and more than 3700 girls have been benefitted just through the COVID-19 initiatives.

Along with our implementing partner Right To Play International, the Goal programme has implemented sports and life skills training to empower and equip young girls with the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to be integral economic leaders in their families, communities and societies.
