Following the release of Pakistan’s budget for the fiscal year 2024–2025 yesterday, there is a noticeable feeling of shock that sweeps across the country. The public seems to be confused and concerned about the government’s budget plan, which was hailed as a way to get the nation through economic difficulties. But ultimately, this year’s budget announcement is only about to make things more difficult for the people. Let’s have a closer look at the highlights of the recently announced budget.

The Common Man’s Nightmare

The budget for FY2024-25 of 18.9 trillion Pakistani rupees ($67.84 billion), sets high goals in the face of difficult economic conditions. The administration intends to deal with a 6.9% GDP budget deficit while aiming for 3.6% economic growth. With defense spending projected to cost 2.1 trillion rupees and debt servicing is predicted to consume a staggering 9.8 trillion rupees!

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has set an enormous tax revenue target of Rs. 12.9 trillion of the Budget For FY2024-25, which has left many people shocked. This number is a considerable increase over prior years, suggesting that the government will tighten its grip on tax evaders while the salaried class prepares for the consequences.

All The Important Details From Budget FY2024-25

While the budget for FY2024-25SaU cover’s a vast spectrum of domains, we’ll be focusing on the more important aspects. These will in one way or another be directly linked to your average salaried individual. Here are the highlights from the budget announcement of 2024-25:

  1. New Income Tax Slabs: The first thing under crosshairs is the tax slab for the average salaried individual. According to the budget for FY2024-25; the tax rate will be applicable from the 1st of June, 2024 and sees an increase in rates where anyone earning between Rs. 600,000 – Rs. 1,200,000 will be taxed double at a rate of 5% of their annual salary exceeding Rs. 600,000.
For those ranging above Rs. 1,200,000 and below Rs. 2,200,000, individuals will have to pay a staggering base 15% of their yearly income showing an increase of 2.5% from the previous year. On top of this, they will also be forced to pay a fixed tax of Rs. 30,000. This trend gets worse as you go higher on the tax bracket. More tax brackets are covered in the following image:

  1. Increase In Petrol Prices: The federal government has also increased levy on petrol by a staggering Rs.20, this sees it going from Rs.60 to Rs.80. This sudden increase in levy will ultimately have a ripple effect on numerous amenities such as transport, production and living expenses. Apart from the rise in fuel prices, the government has suggested raising the tax on light diesel oil. There will be an increase in the development levy on light diesel oil from Rs. 50 to Rs. 75 per liter!
  2. Vehicle Tax Registration: In another shocking turn of events, in place of engine capacity, the federal minister stated that pricing will determine the advance tax on car registration. So you can forget about paying a minimal tax on smaller vehicles, instead their actual values will determine the tax percentage.
  3. Phone Pricing: The mobile market proves to be one of the biggest sources of money, specially in cities such as Karachi. According the the new budget, different phone categories will be taxed an astonishing 18% of their value! This means if you’re looking at smartphones for Rs. 50,000, their new price is officially Rs. 59,000 after taxes. We will also see a eye-watering tax of 25% being implemented on smartphones costing more than $500.
  4. Import Items: The federal minister made the decision to no longer exclude luxury car imports from taxes. It has been agreed to raise the $50,000 import vehicle’s taxes and levies. The import tax on glass goods has also been removed by the government. The rate of import levies on steel and paper goods will be raised, as planned. The only exception to import items are essential goods which will not be taxed.
  5. Tax On Cigarettes & Nicotine: According to reports, the government intends on cracking down on factories where fake cigarettes are being reproduced. Not only this, but according to the budget, to deter people further away from drugs, the government has made the decision to tax the materials used to make cigarettes by Rs. 44,000 per ton! Nicotine pouches will also see a FED at a rate of Rs. 1200 per kg.
  6. Branded Apparel: In an attempt to raise the GST on textile goods, the federal minister declared in his address that the government has placed an 18% sales tax on branded clothing, shoes and other imported leather goods in the country.

  7. Property & Construction: If you thought buying a house for your family was difficult in this economy, well it certainly just got more harder. The minister said that a 5% tax will be applied to the acquisition of new plots as well as residential and commercial real estate. FED on cement used in construction of new homes will be increased to Rs.3 per kg. Not only this, but a 15% tax will be imposed on filers and 45% on non-filers when dealing with property.

Other Affected Sectors And Details From Budget FY2024-25:

While these details might not affect the average salaried class individual in Pakistan, here are a couple of other aspects discussed in the new budget:

  1. Education Scholarships: The government has announced more scholarship programs to be introduced in order to cater more students. An estimate of 10 million students are to be catered according to the new budget.
  2. Solar Industry: In order to support the solar panel business, the coalition government  eliminated import taxes on equipment, including raw materials used in the production of solar panels, inverters, and batteries, as well as plant machinery and associated equipment.

  3. Power Generation: Another sight for sore eyes is the allocation of funds for the water resources in the country. Rs. 206 Billion will be allocated which will be distributed amongst the Mohmand, Diamer Bhasha Dams and Chashma Right Bank Canal.
  4. Aviation: Major airports of the country are to be outsourced instead of running them locally and a whopping Rs. 622 billion worth of liabilities have been transferred from PIA.
  5. Increased Salary & Pension: It is reported that government employees from grades 1 thru 16 will see a hefty increase of 25% in their salaries & pensions. While grades above that will receive a handsome increase of 20% in their salaries & pensions as well.
  6. Kissan Package: The budget for FY2024-25 also stated that Rs. 5 billion ha been set aside for farmers’ packagers and that the government has chosen to capitalize on private sector involvement in this area.
  7. Benazir Income Support: The minister stated that a 27% increase in funding has been suggested for the Benazir Income Support Program. The BISP fund would grow to an astonishing Rs. 593 billion! This will in-turn support 0.7 million more people than the previously allocated amount.
  8. Inflation: While this is a hard pill to swallow, the government aims to reduce inflation in the country yet again. The plan is to keep inflation at a steady rate of 12% for the FY2024-25.

Concluding Remarks

The silent pain that the average person endures is ignored in the midst of all these discussions. It appears that the budget does not adequately meet the people’s urgent needs, even though its goal is long-term stability. The government has failed to time-and-time again meet the real requirements of the people and this year looks no different.

The release of the budget for FY2024-25 has resulted in a dire outlook for the upcoming year for the typical Pakistani. The already high cost of living is expected to rise much more. The relief efforts that have been implemented are minimal and hardly begin to address the financial struggles that Pakistani households endure already.

The Budget For FY2024-25 is a sobering reminder of the fine line Pakistan must walk between social welfare and budgetary sustainability as it navigates the economic recovery. It is a call to action for the government to make sure that its citizens are not left behind in the pursuit of economic resilience, in addition to setting lofty goals which might not even be achievable. All we can do now is wait…and hope, as always.

Budget 2023-24: Pakistan Government Unveils New Revenue Measures
Source: Global Village

The Pakistani government has recently unveiled new revenue measures amounting to Rs223 billion in its latest budget announcement. These measures are in addition to the taxes introduced in the mini-budget announced in mid-February, which will remain in effect. The government aims to generate over Rs500 billion in additional revenue for the tax year 2023-24 through these measures, which include raising the general sales tax from 17 percent to 18 percent, imposing a 25 percent sales tax on luxury item imports, and increasing taxes on cigarettes and drinks.

Key Highlights

  • The government plans to share the tax details with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and expects that the Fund will not raise any objections, as all their concerns have been addressed.
  • The government intends to allocate Rs23 billion to industries and individuals under the revenue relief changes announced in the Finance Bill 2023. This relief includes Rs13 billion in customs duty and Rs10 billion in income tax. However, no relief has been announced in sales tax and excise duty.
  • The government is optimistic about achieving a 28 percent higher revenue target for the next fiscal year, based on a projected GDP growth of 3.5 percent, average inflation of 21 percent, and the revenue measures outlined in the budget.
  • To promote various sectors, the budget offers major relief in the IT sector for exports, solarisation, agriculture, and real estate.

Income Tax

  • The Finance Bill proposes the continuation of the super tax but with fair adjustments for individuals earning over Rs150 million. Three new income levels have been introduced: Rs350 million to Rs400 million, Rs400 million to Rs500 million, and above Rs500 million. These income brackets will be subject to tax rates of 6 percent, 8 percent, and 10 percent, respectively.
  • Other income tax changes include a 0.6 percent withholding tax on citizens not on the Active Taxpayers’ List (ATL) when they withdraw cash exceeding Rs50,000. The withholding tax rates on goods supply, services, and contracts will increase by 1 percent, with exceptions for specific items. Furthermore, a final withholding tax of 10 percent will be charged on bonus shares issued by a company, or 20 percent for non-filers of tax.
  • The Finance Bill also proposes adjustments to the withholding tax rates on payments to non-residents using debit/credit or prepaid cards. Similarly, an adjustable advance tax of Rs200,000 will be charged when issuing a work permit/visa for a foreign domestic helper.

Sales Tax and Excise Duty

  • In terms of sales tax and excise duty, the government has made certain adjustments. Sales tax has been withdrawn on edible products sold in bulk under brand names or trademarks. The tax rate has increased from 12 percent to 15 percent on supplies made by point-of-sale (POS) retailers dealing in leather and textile products.
  • Furthermore, a federal excise duty (FED) has been imposed on energy-inefficient fans and incandescent bulbs at rates of Rs2,000 per fan and 20 percent ad valorem, respectively. The scope of FED on services has been expanded to include royalty and fees for technical services.
  • Sales tax has been exempted for another year ending June 2024 on contraceptives and accessories, plant saplings, combine harvesters, dryers for agricultural products, no-till-direct seeders, planters, trans-planters, other planters, bovine semen, and the import of IT equipment by IT and ITeS exporters registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board.
  • In the federal capital, a 15 percent tax will be charged on electric power transmission services. The rate has been reduced to 15 percent from 16 percent on IT-based system development consultants. A lower rate of 5 percent is proposed for services provided by restaurants and other food outlets if payment is made through debit or credit cards, mobile wallets, or QR scanning.

The Pakistani government’s new budget is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it raises taxes on a number of goods and services, which will likely lead to higher prices for consumers. On the other hand, it also provides some relief to certain sectors of the economy, such as the IT sector. Overall, the impact of the new budget on the Pakistani economy remains to be seen.

The Sindh government has taken a significant step towards sustainability by announcing plans to shift major hospitals in the province to solar power. This initiative is part of the government’s larger solar power plan, aimed at reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and promoting clean, renewable energy solutions. The announcement was made by the Provincial Minister of Sindh for Energy, Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh, during the inauguration of a solar power park in the Karachi press club.

The logistics of the plan

The solar power park, with a capacity of 60KV, will play a crucial role in meeting 90 percent of the press club’s power needs. This is a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to harness the power of the sun and provide sustainable energy solutions. Minister Sheikh also highlighted that government buildings, prisons, and schools will be included in the solar power plan, with the aim of ending electricity load shedding in the province.

The minister emphasized that the government’s objective is to address the economic crisis and uplift the country. By investing in solar power, the government hopes to create a more sustainable and self-reliant energy sector. Minister Sheikh took the opportunity to criticize the PTI government, accusing them of hindering power projects in Sindh. He expressed confidence that the PPP (Pakistan People’s Party) will secure victory in the upcoming elections, highlighting their commitment to promoting renewable energy and sustainable development.

Provincial and Federal agenda aligning

This announcement from the Sindh government aligns with the federal government’s efforts to embrace solar power. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the conversion of all federal government buildings in Islamabad to solar power within a strict timeframe of seven weeks. This directive showcases the government’s determination to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel and embrace renewable energy sources. The prime minister also instructed officials to initiate solarization projects in other parts of the country, extending the benefits of solar power to various regions.

The Untapped Potential Of Women In Pakistan

Pakistan has a lot of potential for growth but undeniably, one of the biggest untapped resource is its significant female population that still awaits inclusion in the national economy. As per the World Economic Forum’s 2021 Global Gender Gap Report, Pakistan ranked 153rd out of 156 countries, which indicates massive strides the country needs to take to ensure gender diversity and inclusion of women in its socioeconomic mainstream.

Source: Pakistan Labour Force Survey 2020-21

As per the last published Pakistan Labour Force Survey 2020-21, numbers show stark disparities along gender lines. Women’s participation in the national labor force is most concerning being 21.4 per cent of the country’s working-age population, as against the male labour force marked at 67.9 percent.
We interviewed Rabel Sadozai, the newly appointed Director Marketing and Sales at Fatima Fertilizer and the first female to hold such a prominent position in Pakistan’s agriculture and fertilizer sector, to discuss the potential role of Pakistani women to promote the country’s socio-economic prosperity and what it will take towards its realization.

B: How important is it to be recognized as the first woman in Pakistan’s agriculture sector to hold a senior-level management position?

RS: I consider this recognition as a true representation of millions of empowered women, directly or indirectly associated with the agriculture sector of Pakistan. It gives me the opportunity to use my influence for the betterment of farmers in general and female farmers in particular. A recent example of this commitment was marked by Sarsabz – the flagship brand of Fatima Fertilizer, hosting a special panel discussion at the Pakistan Pavilion in Dubai Expo 2020 to celebrate our three exceptionally inspiring female farmers and share their inspirational stories with the World.

The guest panelists included Rabia Sultan – progressive farmer from Muzaffargarh who defied all odds in a male-dominated profession, Nazo Darejo – a brave woman from Sindh who sacrificed a great deal to protect the piece of land she called home and whose inspirational story was highlighted by Sarsabz through a special web series called ‘Kissan Kahani’ to a wide online audience, and Azra Mehmood Sheikh – a progressive farmer from Bahawalpur who actively advocates about the hardships faced by farmers in South Punjab.

Being able to introduce Kissan Day to Pakistan is something that I will always be proud of, as it was not only recognized by the country and its industry stakeholders, but it has also become an annual event to be celebrated on December 18. The campaign was so influential that it was selected by Kotler as a case study in Essentials of Modern Marketing – Pakistan Edition.

B: Tell us about your journey of nine years at Fatima Fertilizer and your key accomplishments related to marketing communications?

RS: I was able to achieve a number of goals during my nine years at Fatima Fertilizer, and I took on as many marketing communication challenges as I could, but being able to introduce Kissan Day to Pakistan is something that I will always be proud of, as it was not only recognized by the country and its industry stakeholders, but it has also become an annual event to be celebrated on December 18. The campaign was so influential that it was selected by Kotler as a case study in Essentials of Modern Marketing – Pakistan Edition.

Over the years, I’ve used data to establish how Fatima Fertilizer’s products are giving on average 10% greater yields as compared to conventional fertilizer. This brand promise has been purposely communicated in such a manner that it shows how a farmer can create a better life for himself and his family that leads to prosperity of the village and eventually impacts Pakistan’s GDP as agriculture contributes on average 22-25%.
We also launched true farmer stories under Kissan Kahani to help educate our stakeholders on the impactful role our farmers are playing in helping sustain Pakistan’s food security.
Overall, our efforts have been duly recognized not only by local platforms such as the Pakistan Digital Awards but also the global ones including MARCOM, AVA, and Effies.

B: In your opinion, what factors are responsible for the under-representation of women within the corporate and civil sectors of Pakistan?

RS: Women may be under-represented in these sectors but not in the agriculture sector. Women are extremely empowered on the rural side to help not just with domestic housework but field work and livestock farming as well. I feel it is my responsibility to clarify this common misconception. As far as corporate and civil sectors are concerned, I feel women are deprived of an environment that helps them balance work and home responsibilities efficiently. The key to my success was not only my ability to effectively manage the roles of a team leader, manager, wife, mother, and so on, but the fact that I was given an environment where I was empowered to manage and balance these roles. Employers whether government or private need to realize that the needs of women are different from men. We need policies and benefits that match their circumstances. For example, women need to feel secure while stepping out of their homes for work, they need to be given daycare facilities or an equivalent allowance to manage it, maternity leaves and so on. According to recent studies, the gender-wage gap in Pakistan has reached 55.6 percent, which is concerning, to say the least, because a woman has to weigh the benefits of her working against the associated costs.

B: How many Pakistani women are currently engaged in Pakistan’s agriculture sector and how can they claim more important roles within this industry?

RS: Currently, more than 22 million women work in the agriculture sector and contribute to the advancement of this sector. As per an earlier issued report by UN Women titled “Rural Women in Pakistan-Status Report 2018”, agriculture is the main labour activity of rural women with approximately 75 percent of women employed in the agriculture sector. The empowerment of these rural women and the realization of their human rights, in addition to their important role in nation-building, is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) related to gender equality.
Women need education foremost followed by skill-set enhancement. Companies like ours work with a lot of progressive females and seek to empower them by giving them an opportunity to project their work. For example, we recently helped Ms. Jugno Mohsin, a female farmer who worked to revive a dying breed of local cotton called ‘Khaki Desan’, by providing her with the technical knowledge and giving her the opportunity to create a fabric from this cotton which can be marketed to a global audience.

B: How important is women’s participation to achieve overall economic growth and prosperity for the country?

RS: I think our founding father, Quaid-e-Azam made it clear that women had to work side by side with men if we are to transform Pakistan into a strong and prospering nation. Now whether we do it starting from our homes, schools, offices or factories is dependent on a mix of our own capabilities and opportunities available to us. Women are almost 50% of Pakistan’s population, so there is no question that a big responsibility rests on our shoulders to help develop our home i.e. Pakistan, and I believe being aware of this responsibility is the first step we need to take.

What is Ethereum Coin? The Next Big Deal in Crypto

what-is-ethereum-coin-the-next-big-deal-in-crypto

Once known as a little brother of Bitcoin, Ethereum at first wasn’t taken seriously by the majority of investors, as it looked difficult for them to understand. Today, the tables have turned, and the Ethereum coin has carved out a sizeable share of the crypto market due to innovations like DeFi (decentralised finance) and NFT (non-fungible token). But such a drastic improvement? How so?

What is Ethereum coin, and why are investors considering it the next big rival to Bitcoin?

What is Ethereum Coin?

The Ethereum coin, AKA Ether (ETH), is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network. It is a decentralised, blockchain-based platform that was launched in 2015. Ethereum is more than just a digital currency, as it also fuels the decentralised applications and smart contracts built on the Ethereum platform. Think of it as the fuel that powers the “world computer” that is Ethereum.

It’s a platform that allows developers to build and run applications, called dApps, that don’t rely on any central authority.

In simpler terms, Ether is to Ethereum what petrol is to a car. You can invest in it, trade it, or use it to run programs on the Ethereum network.

A Quick Look Back at The History of Ethereum

Ethereum was created by Vitalik Buterin, who published its whitepaper in 2013. The project was crowdfunded in 2014 and officially launched in July 2015. What set Ethereum apart from Bitcoin right from the beginning was its ambition: not just to move money, but to allow anyone to build decentralised apps using smart contracts.

Smart contracts are self-executing lines of code written in blockchain that carry out certain instructions once they are met. No banks, lawyers, or middlemen required. These smart contracts are what power decentralised applications or “dApps” on Ethereum.

But wait, you might be thinking that Bitcoin does the same (almost), so how is this any different? Here is what sets Ethereum and Bitcoin apart.

  • Bitcoin is primarily a digital store of value. It is a kind of “Internet gold” that’s great for holding and transferring value.
  • Ethereum is a programmable blockchain. It lets developers create applications that can do all sorts of things: lending money, trading assets, creating NFTs, or even running entire games.
  • Bitcoin is relatively simple. Ethereum is flexible, open-ended, and designed for innovation.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Bitcoin is also playing a huge role in worldwide expansion towards decentralised finance and is still very valuable in its own way. Ethereum is just bringing something new to the table, along with what Bitcoin already offers.

What are Ethereum Gas Fees and Why is it So Expensive?

Gas fees are transaction fees paid by users to record their transactions on a blockchain. The fees are used as rewards to validators, geographically distributed computer users, for verifying transactions and keeping the blockchain network running properly.

Gas fees also offer an extra layer of security to blockchains by making it costly for bad actors to interact with the network and attempt to disrupt it.

Gas fees tend to be small fractions of cryptocurrencies native to a blockchain and are often not set in stone but depend on how much a particular blockchain is being used at any one time.

Users can pay higher gas fees if they want a transaction confirmed more quickly, as these higher fees incentivise validators to process their transactions first. Likewise, users who pay lower gas fees may see their transactions stuck in a queue because validators are less motivated to confirm them in a timely manner.

These gas fees tend to be more expensive on Ethereum than on other blockchains because of the sheer number of users it attracts, which makes the network congested.

Every application and user on Ethereum is competing for a limited amount of space.

The very large volume of transactions that pass through the thousands of decentralised apps, DeFi protocols, and NFT platforms built on the Ethereum blockchain leads to spikes in gas prices.

Since gas fees are priced in ETH, they also naturally go up, or down, depending on the market value of Ethereum.

During periods of elevated blockchain activity, for example, when a new DeFi protocol launches, or a popular set of NFTs are created for sale, the average price for gas fees can climb to very high levels indeed.

Ethereum-price-to-usd
Ethereum Price to USD

The Role of Smart Contracts and Ethereum 2.0

One of Ethereum’s most revolutionary features is the smart contract. These are bits of code that execute automatically when certain conditions are met. For example, a smart contract could automatically release payment when a product is delivered.

All of this runs on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which is a global and decentralised computer that ensures these contracts execute securely across thousands of nodes worldwide.

This combination of smart contracts and EVM is what makes Ethereum the foundation for much of today’s DeFi (decentralised finance) and NFT (non-fungible token) activity.

In September 2022, Ethereum underwent a major upgrade known as The Merge, transitioning from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) system (like Bitcoin) to a much more energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system. Here is why this can be a very important upgrade:

  • Ethereum’s energy consumption dropped by over 99%, addressing one of the major criticisms of crypto.
  • The network is now better prepared to handle future upgrades, like sharding, which will significantly increase its capacity and lower fees.
  • Users can now stake their ETH to help secure the network and earn rewards, rather than relying on miners.
  • Ethereum’s energy consumption went down by a total of 99 percent, which has made it a lot more sustainable and less energy extensive unlike what it was before.

So, Is Ethereum Really the Next Big Deal?

By all accounts, it already is.

Ethereum is the backbone of the modern crypto ecosystem. It supports the majority of DeFi protocols, NFT platforms, and decentralised applications. With its transition to Proof of Stake, Ethereum has solved some of its biggest issues, energy waste and scalability, making it even more sustainable and future-ready.

Whether you’re an investor, a developer, or just someone trying to understand the next phase of the internet, Ethereum is a project you can’t ignore.

China Begins Construction of World’s Largest Hydropower Dam

china-begins-construction-of-worlds-largest-hydropower-dam

China’s Premier Li Qiang has announced that construction has officially started on what is expected to become the world’s largest hydropower dam.

The project, located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, is estimated to cost at least $170 billion, according to the official news agency Xinhua.

This development is being seen by Chinese financial markets as a sign of economic stimulus. As a result, stock prices and bond yields increased on Monday.

The dam will include five cascading hydropower stations and will have the capacity to produce 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, roughly the same amount of electricity consumed by the UK last year.

It will be built in the lower stretches of the Yarlung Zangbo River. A portion of the river drops by 2,000 meters over a 50-kilometre stretch, providing significant hydropower potential.

Regional and Environmental Concerns

India and Bangladesh have already expressed concerns about how this project might affect millions of people living downstream.

Several non-governmental organisations have also warned about potential damage to one of the most ecologically rich and diverse regions on the Tibetan Plateau.

Despite these warnings, Beijing has stated that the dam will help meet electricity demand in both Tibet and wider China.

The government also claims it will not cause major problems for downstream water supplies or the environment. Operations for the dam are expected to begin in the 2030s.

Market and Stock Impacts

China’s CSI Construction & Engineering Index rose by as much as 4%, reaching a seven-month high.

Stocks of Power Construction Corporation of China and Arcplus Group PLC increased by their daily maximum of 10%.

Wang Zhuo, a partner at Shanghai Zhuozhu Investment Management, said, “From an investment perspective, mature hydropower projects offer bond-like dividends,” but added that “speculative buying into related stocks would inflate valuations.”

According to a client note from Huatai Securities, the project will increase the demand for construction materials such as cement and civil explosives.

Shares in Hunan Wuxin Tunnel Intelligent Equipment Co, which makes tunnel construction machines, jumped 30%, while Geokang Technologies Co Ltd, a maker of smart monitoring terminals, also rose 30%.

Cement manufacturer Xizang Tianlu Co Ltd and civil explosives maker Tibet GaoZheng Explosive Co both surged by their 10% daily limit.

Government Statement and Economic Outlook

Premier Li Qiang called the dam a “project of the century” and emphasised that “special emphasis must be placed on ecological conservation to prevent environmental damage,” according to Xinhua.

Following the announcement, yields on government bonds rose across the board on Monday.

The most-traded 30-year treasury futures dropped to their lowest point in five weeks. Investors viewed the project as part of broader economic stimulus efforts.

The project will be led by the newly formed state-owned company, China Yajiang Group. It represents a large public investment push aimed at supporting economic growth as other sectors weaken.

A report from Citi said, “Assuming 10 years of construction, the investment/GDP boost could reach 120 billion yuan ($16.7 billion) for a single year. The actual economic benefits could go beyond that.”

Jobs and Displacement

China has not yet given any estimates on how many jobs the dam project might create.

When the Three Gorges Dam was built, it took almost 20 years to complete and created nearly one million jobs, according to state media, but it also displaced around the same number of people.

There is no information so far on how many people may be displaced by the Yarlung Zangbo dam project.

NGOs continue to warn that the dam could cause irreversible damage to the Tibetan Plateau and negatively affect millions of people living downstream.

The Yarlung Zangbo becomes the Brahmaputra River as it exits Tibet, flowing into India and eventually into Bangladesh.

Want a Real Vacation? Go Tech-Free and Thank Us Later

want-a-real-vacation-go-tech-free-and-thank-us-later

When was the last time you truly switched off your phone during a holiday? Not just your out-of-office email, but your screen, notifications, and the endless scrolling through social media and work chats.

If your “relaxing” vacation still includes checking messages by the pool or sneakily replying to emails at dinner, then maybe what you need isn’t just a holiday… You need a tech-free vacation.

What are Tech-Free Vacations?

Tech-free vacations are exactly what they sound like: trips where you unplug from your digital devices and reconnect with the world around you. Instead, it’s about being fully present in the moment, something many of us haven’t done in years.

In a hyper-connected world, this can be very draining. Even while on holiday, many of us feel pressure to post photos, reply to messages, or keep up with work.

Research shows that excessive screen time is linked to stress, anxiety, and sleep disruption, hardly the ingredients for a restful getaway.

Going tech-free lets you:

  • Stimulate your brain 24/7, and your mind gets a chance to genuinely unwind.
  • Let’s you focus on real conversations and meaningful moments.
  • Stumble upon local gems, meet interesting people, and discover the kind of serendipity tech usually filters out.
  • Return home feeling more focused, creative, and inspired.

While you are at it, do some research on really cheap countries that people are opting for these days. Detox and a cheap vacation both in one.

what-are-tech-free-vacations?
What Are Tech-Free Vacations?

Where to Go for a Tech-Free Escape?

You don’t have to book a remote jungle retreat (though that’s always an option).

Here are some great ideas for tech-free vacations:

  1. Nature cabins with no Wi-Fi (Canada, Sweden, northern Pakistan)
  2. Eco-lodges or treehouses
  3. Retreats in Bali, Sri Lanka or even local farm stays
  4. Digital detox resorts that lock away your phone (yes, really)
  5. Even some cruise ships now offer tech-free zones

Basically, any place that helps you switch off and just be.

Tech-free vacations offer that reset button your brain’s been begging for. You’ll sleep better, stress less, and maybe even rediscover the joy of doing nothing.

So, if you’re craving a real break, ditch the devices. Trust us, your inbox will still be there when you get back.

And you? You’ll return lighter, brighter, and more alive.

It’s Not Just You, Your Snacks Are Getting Smaller!

its-not-just-you-your-snacks-are-getting-smaller

A couple of months ago, Cadbury’s website had a cheeky little FAQ at the bottom:

Q: Why has the size of the egg changed?
(Referring to the beloved Cadbury Creme Egg)
A: It hasn’t, you’ve just grown up.

Ah, yes, the classic “It’s not us, it’s your nostalgia” defence.

But then, plot twist! Actor BJ Novak showed up on Conan O’Brien’s show and casually shattered the illusion for millions. He brought not one, but two Creme Eggs: one from the current year and one from the year before.

Spoiler alert: they were not the same size. Not even close.

So no, Cadbury, we didn’t just “grow up.” You just shrank our chocolate dreams and hoped we wouldn’t notice.

But you’d think since the size of the chocolate has decreased, there had to be a decline in the prices as well, right? Well, no. The size has changed, the recipe has changed, but the price has increased. Now, with a loyalty card, each egg costs 59p when bought in the packs, rather than last year’s promotional price of 30p.

cadbury-creme-egg
Cadbury Creme Egg- Then vs. Now

Do you know what’s the worst part? Cadbury isn’t the sole company falling to shrinkflation. There are many.

What is Shrinkflation?

In simple words, Shrinkflation is reducing a product’s size or quantity while keeping its price stable. Whether it’s your toilet paper, your bag of chips, chocolates, or literally any other thing you can think of, they’re all falling to shrinkflation right before our eyes, and we can barely tell.

Between 2012 and 2017, almost 2529 products shrank in the United Kingdom while their prices remained the same. While many companies try to hide these changes, making them as less noticeable as possible, consumers have lately started to catch the little details. In fact, there is an entire Reddit thread dedicated to people finding products that have fallen to shrinkflation.

Just discovered this subreddit and it irritates me to no end.

Not seeing the new value
byu/Hennen1266 inshrinkflation

The last one on the shelf. Dole has followed suit.
byu/Spire_Prime inshrinkflation

The list is so long that it would be impossible to attach all of it here. So, I highly recommend you go and check out the Reddit thread; your mind will be blown.

Why Companies Resort to Shrinkflation?

It’s not like Cadbury has a personal vendetta against you and decided to shrink the Creme Egg out of spite. As dramatic as that sounds, there are actually some pretty valid reasons behind shrinkflation.

The biggest culprit? Rising production costs. As the price of raw materials climbs, think potatoes for chips or cocoa for chocolate, so does the cost of making your favourite snacks. Now, brands have two choices: raise the price or shrink the product. Guess which one feels sneakier?

Take your go-to bag of chips. If potatoes suddenly cost more, making the same bag becomes pricier. However, instead of risking a price shock, the company quietly reduces few chips and keeps the price the same. Voilà, shrinkflation!

shrinkflation
Shrinkflation

Most shoppers are more sensitive to price tags than portion sizes. We’ll spot a Rs20 hike in an instant, but barely flinch if the bag gets a tad lighter or the bar a bit thinner. That’s why brands often choose shrinkage over price hikes; it’s inflation, but quieter and more subtle.

Skimflation: Is that a Third Choice?

Earlier, I talked about how companies usually have two classic tricks up their sleeves during inflation: increase the prices or shrink the product. But guess what? There’s a third, sneakier move in the playbook: skimflation.

When brands can’t touch the price tag or the portion size, they quietly downgrade the quality. Suddenly, your favourite snack is made with “new and improved” (read: cheaper and sadder) ingredients. The wrapper’s the same, but what’s inside? Definitely not the stuff you grew up loving.

Honestly, no wonder my childhood snacks taste like a faded memory, because they are not the same anymore.

How to Spot Shrinkflation?

It’s weird how tricky it has become to spot shrinkflation today. Unless you pay close attention, you probably wouldn’t even notice that your favourite products have gotten smaller and yet you are paying the same price for them.

If you are looking to spot shrinkflation next time you do your groceries, here are some tips:

  • Try spotting a redesign. When companies shrink products, they sometimes also change package designs. You might think a new quirky slogan or a flashy design is totally harmless, but guess what, it’s not!
  • Do a quick price-per-unit check to spot any sneaky changes. Can’t remember the old price? No worries, but if you do, you’ve got a shopper’s superpower.
  • Learn the net weights of products and notice any changes. Again, this ain’t for the amateur, but if you really want to spot shrinkflation, you need to pay extra attention.

So next time you’re standing in the snack aisle wondering why your chips feel more like crumbs and your chocolate bar disappears in two bites, don’t blame your appetite, blame shrinkflation.

Because no, Cadbury, we didn’t grow up. You just got sneakier. And now, so have we.

From Exile to the World Stage: ICC Extends a Hand to Afghan Women Cricketers

icc-extends-a-hand-to-afghan-women-cricketers

The International Cricket Council (ICC), at its annual conference in Singapore, unveiled a string of significant updates, but one in particular stood out: a groundbreaking move to support displaced Afghan women cricketers who have been exiled from their homeland following political upheaval.

A new chapter for Afghan women in cricket

For years, Afghan women passionate about cricket have been silenced, not by a lack of talent, but by politics and persecution.

But the ICC’s latest initiative offers a beacon of hope. Afghan women cricketers living in exile will now be given structured opportunities to play at the international level, including at major ICC tournaments such as the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup and the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup in England.

Backed by the best in the game

The initiative is being spearheaded by ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, who is working closely with some of the most powerful boards in cricket, BCCI, ECB, and Cricket Australia.

Together, they will oversee high-performance support and domestic playing opportunities for these women, ensuring they stay match-ready and competitive.

It’s a powerful example of collaboration that transcends borders and politics. For players who’ve seen their dreams interrupted, this could be the lifeline they’ve been waiting for.

England retains WTC final hosting rights

In more traditional cricketing news, England will continue to play host to the World Test Championship (WTC) finals, having been awarded the rights for the next three editions.

This decision maintains continuity, England has already hosted all three WTC finals, including last month’s clash at Lord’s between South Africa and Australia.

While the tournament itself is still growing into its full potential, having a consistent venue helps establish a tradition, something Test cricket thrives on.

A growing cricket family

The ICC also expanded its global cricket family by welcoming Timor-Leste and Zambia as Associate Members. That brings the total number of ICC Members to 110, a strong sign that cricket is continuing to find fans and players in every corner of the globe.

It’s easy to overlook these additions in the shadow of larger announcements, but this grassroots growth is crucial. The future stars of world cricket may well come from places we haven’t yet considered.

While some nations are joining, one cricketing body is on borrowed time. USA Cricket has been granted a three-month extension to carry out crucial governance reforms. These reforms include completing free and fair elections, a long-standing issue that has plagued the board’s operations.

The ICC made it clear: accountability and structure matter. With growing interest in cricket in the US, especially after the successful T20 World Cup co-hosted earlier this year, this could be a make-or-break moment for cricket’s future in America.

Mike Hesson Slams Dhaka Pitch After Pakistan’s T20I Loss

mike-hesson-reaffirms-faith-in-babar-azam-rizwan

When a team is bundled out for 110 in under 20 overs, fingers are bound to be pointed. But for Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, the blame wasn’t only on the players; it was squarely on the Sher-e-Bangla pitch in Dhaka.

In the opening T20I against Bangladesh, Pakistan’s batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards. From 46 for 5 to 110 all out, the Men in Green looked out of sorts, unsure whether to defend or attack.

They seemed caught in two minds, and Dhaka’s tricky surface didn’t help.

After the match, Hesson didn’t hold back and slammed the pitch.

“I think (the pitch) is not ideal for anybody,” Hesson said. “Teams are trying to prepare for the Asia Cup or the T20 World Cup.”

“It is not acceptable. It is still no excuse for some of the decisions we made with the bat. But this pitch is not up to international standards.”

He admitted that his team misread the conditions, especially after Fakhar Zaman’s early flourish gave them a false sense of security.

“We got off to a little bit of a flyer… which gave us a false indication of how the pitch was behaving,” he added.

The Run-Outs and the Risk

What made matters worse were the three run-outs. On a surface already playing tricks, those were moments Pakistan simply couldn’t afford.

Hesson called out the poor shot selection, especially in the middle overs when the ball started to grip, nip, and bounce.

“We failed to assess the risk. A couple of run-outs didn’t help either,” he said.

Still, he wasn’t in the mood to fully shield his players. While the pitch was a talking point, he stressed that better decision-making could have changed the outcome.

Bangladesh Players Disagree

Bangladesh opener Parvez Hossain Emon, who scored a match-winning half-century, wasn’t buying the pitch excuse.

“We didn’t feel (it was a bad pitch) as we chased it down in less than 16 overs,” Emon said. “We could have scored 150-160 if we batted the full 20 overs… We adjusted better than them.”

Fair point. Bangladesh chased the target inside 16 overs, making Pakistan’s struggles look worse than they probably were.

A Bigger Concern Than Just One Match

Hesson’s frustration wasn’t just about one bad day at the office. His concern goes deeper, about player development, preparation for global events like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, and the overall standard of cricket.

“You need good cricket wickets to develop cricketers. There was some good wickets during the BPL, to be fair. It is not up to the standard when international cricket is being played,” he said.

Cancelled Clash, Crushed Hopes: Politics Roil Pakistan‑India Legends Match

wcl-2025-politics-roil-pakistan‑india-legends-match

Sunday, 20 July, was meant to be a double‑delight for Pakistan fans. First, Pakistan Champions were scheduled to take on India Champions in the WCL 2025.

Then, later in the day, Pakistan’s T20I side kicked off a three‑match series in Dhaka. Instead, Sunday delivered disappointment on both fronts.

Pakistan stumbled in the opening T20I, falling short by seven wickets. Fans had hoped for a strong start in the series, but the result left them asking questions about form and mindset ahead of the upcoming matches.

WCL Spotlight: When Legends Couldn’t Meet

However, the real social media firestorm erupted early Sunday morning, when organisers confirmed the cancellation of the marquee Pakistan–India clash. The statement apologised for causing hurt feelings and discomfort, acknowledging backlash from brands and fans.

They explained their original intent: “We… wanted to bring fans some happy moments… but ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions.”

wcl-2025-politics-roil-pakistan‑india-legends-match

Why India Walked Away From Pakistan Clash?

Reports suggest five Indian players, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, and Shikhar Dhawan, objected to playing against Shahid Afridi, citing his strong remarks during recent India–Pakistan tensions.

Several stars even threatened to withdraw. Ultimately, Harbhajan and Yusuf pulled out, while Dhawan unceremoniously confirmed his exit via Instagram.

Afridi, unfazed, responded strongly: “There is no fault of mine… politics should stay away from cricket. If you didn’t want to play Pakistan, you should have refused before coming here… yet you practiced and then backed out at the last minute.”

Fan Frustration: Money Spinner on Hold

Let’s be real: the WCL wouldn’t have generated global buzz if not for the India–Pakistan showdown. That match was the tournament’s headline act, the big draw, the money spinner. And cancelling it at the eleventh hour? That leaves a sour taste.

Afridi’s point rings true, Indian legends were aware of the fixture and Afridi’s inclusion well in advance. To withdraw on matchday smacks of poor planning and a lack of honouring commitments. Ultimately, fans, broadcasters, sponsors, and everyone loses.

This episode poses a tough question: when cricket’s healing power is overshadowed by political crossfire, who really wins?

Pakistan fans hoped for a joyful reunion of legends, while their national side grappled with a shaky start in Dhaka. If diplomacy and sportsmanship can’t prevail even here, what hope is there in broader diplomacy?

Sunday’s saga isn’t just a cancelled game, it’s a reminder that cricket, passion and patriotism remain deeply intertwined. Yet if legends can’t walk onto the field and shake hands, perhaps it’s time for cricket boards to step up boldly, to protect the sport and its fans from politics disrupting the game.

Apple Sues Jon Prosser for Allegedly Leaking iOS 26

apple-sues-jon-prosser-for-allegedly-leaking-ios-26

Apple filed a lawsuit in federal court in Northern California. The company accused Jon Prosser and another individual, Michael Ramacciotti, of misappropriating trade secrets related to the unreleased iOS 26.

According to the lawsuit, Apple is seeking unspecified damages and a court order to prevent Prosser from sharing any more unreleased trade secrets.

In January, YouTuber Jon Prosser began revealing early renderings of Apple’s iOS 26 through his channel FrontPageTech.

He first showed a redesigned camera interface and later, in March, teased a “liquid glass” concept as part of iOS 26’s new look. By April, he had published more detailed previews.

Prosser Responds to Allegations

Jon Prosser responded to Apple’s lawsuit on X (formerly Twitter), reacting to a MacRumors article.

He wrote, “This is not how things went down on my end. For the record, I certainly did not ‘plot’ to access anyone’s phone and was unaware of the situation playing out.”

Apple’s lawsuit claims it received an anonymous tip on April 4. The tip identified Ethan Lipnik, a former Apple software engineer who worked at the company between 2023 and 2025, as the source of the leak.

Apple alleges that Prosser asked Ramacciotti to access Lipnik’s development phone. Ramacciotti, reportedly a friend of Lipnik, was staying at his house.

While Lipnik was away, Ramacciotti allegedly obtained the phone’s password and accessed it.

“He then made a video call to Prosser, displaying unreleased iOS 26 features,” Apple claims.

The company further alleges that Prosser screen-recorded the call and used the footage to create detailed iOS 26 renderings, which he then published on YouTube.

Apple also claims that Prosser shared the footage with others, one of whom recognised Lipnik’s apartment in the background and reported it.

Apple stated that it takes serious measures to protect its unreleased products and trade secrets. However, these safeguards are not always enough against those determined to obtain and leak information.

Rumours of Imad Wasim’s Affair Spark Online Debate

rumours-of-imad-wasims-affair-spark-online-debate

Renowned Pakistani cricketer Imad Wasim is facing public attention and speculation after reports surfaced about problems in his marriage with wife Sannia Ashfaque.

The couple, who got married in 2019, are reportedly living separately amid allegations of Imad’s involvement in an extramarital relationship.

Imad recently retired from international cricket but continues to play in leagues like the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

He has not released any public statement in response to these rumours. The couple has two children and recently welcomed a baby boy.

Imad Wasim Cheating Scandal Under Scrutiny

After the birth of their child, Sannia Ashfaque, who is also a digital creator and influencer, shared a heartfelt message on social media. Her post read: “I carried you for 9 months on my own. May Allah bless me with even more strength for the journey ahead, Zayan.”

Her post received supportive comments from followers, with many praising her for being “strong” and “resilient.”

Imad Wasim Cheating Scandal Under Scrutiny

According to social media users, Sannia also updated her Instagram bio.

Previously, it described her as “Imad Wasim’s wife,” but now it reads “Mama to Inaya Imad & Rayan Imad.”

Allegations and Denials

Meanwhile, public speculation increased, with some social media users suggesting Imad may be involved with a social media influencer. Although these claims remain unverified, one name that has surfaced online is Nyla Raja, who has now issued a clarification.

Nyla has publicly denied the rumours, saying that her meeting with Imad Wasim was “purely coincidental” and requested to be kept out of the matter.

Fans have expressed disappointment online, some stating that public figures need to be mindful of the emotional impact their personal decisions have on their families.

One comment read: “These public figures should realise the impact of their actions. Behind every scandal is a real woman and real children facing pain.”

Some have drawn comparisons with similar controversies involving other athletes, pointing to what they see as a repeated pattern in the sports world.

So far, Imad Wasim has neither confirmed nor denied any of the circulating rumours.

Iran Replaced Air Defences Damaged in June Conflict With Israel

iran-replaces-air-defences-damaged-in-june-conflict-with-israel

Iran has replaced its air defence systems that were damaged during the conflict with Israel last month, according to Defah Press, a news agency affiliated with the country’s defence forces.

Rear Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi, the regular army’s deputy for operations, confirmed the update in a statement published on Sunday.

During the air conflict in June, Israel’s air force gained air superiority over Iran, damaging parts of the Iranian air defence infrastructure.

In response, Iranian forces launched waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli positions, and Iran claimed these attacks successfully struck key strategic areas.

Rear Admiral Mousavi said, “The Zionist enemy sought to destroy Iran’s defence capabilities, and some of our defence systems were damaged in this war; But with the efforts of my comrades, the damaged systems were replaced and deployed in predetermined locations.”

He also stated that Israel failed to achieve its goals and accused the United States and NATO of supporting Israel in the conflict.

Iran already had its own long-range air defence system, Bavar-373, along with the Russian-made S-300 system, before the war.

The report did not mention any import of new foreign systems after the recent conflict. Following Israeli attacks on Iranian missile facilities last October, Iran had shown the deployment of Russian systems during military drills to demonstrate it had recovered from the assault.

Possible Nuclear Talks With Europe

In a separate development, Iran may hold nuclear negotiations next week with Britain, France, and Germany, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

These talks would address the country’s nuclear programme after recent warnings by the European nations that a failure to return to talks would result in the reimposition of international sanctions.

Tasnim reported: “The principle of talks has been agreed upon, but consultations are continuing on the time and place of the talks. The country in which the talks could be held next week has not been finalised,” citing an informed source.

This update came days after foreign ministers of the E3 (Britain, France, Germany) and the EU’s foreign policy chief held their first discussion with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi since Iran’s nuclear sites were targeted by the US and Israel in an earlier military strike.

The E3, along with China and Russia, remain part of the 2015 nuclear agreement which the US withdrew from in 2018. The deal offered sanctions relief in exchange for limits on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Snapback Mechanism

The E3 nations have warned they will initiate the “snapback mechanism”, a process to reinstate UN sanctions, by the end of August if talks do not resume or fail to reach progress.

Araqchi responded to the warning, saying: “If EU/E3 want to have a role, they should act responsibly, and put aside the worn-out policies of threat and pressure, including the ‘snap-back’ for which they lack absolutely [any] moral and legal ground.”

The snapback mechanism would restore sanctions before the UN resolution linked to the 2015 deal expires on October 18.

Before the recent Israel-Iran war, Iran and the US had engaged in five rounds of nuclear talks mediated by Oman.

These discussions stalled due to disagreements, mainly over uranium enrichment, which Western countries want Iran to halt completely to prevent any risk of nuclear weapons development.

Iran continues to maintain that its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.

PAF’s JF-17 and C-130 Bag Top Awards at RIAT in UK

pafs-jf-17-and-c-130-bag-top-awards-at-riat-in-uk

Fighter jets from the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) have won top awards in two categories at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2025 in the United Kingdom, according to state-run PTV News on Saturday.

The event, running from 18 to 20 July, is known as one of the world’s largest military airshows and has been operating for more than 50 years. It supports the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, according to the event’s website.

A PAF team arrived at Royal Air Force Base Fairford in the UK on Thursday with advanced aircraft, the JF-17 Thunder Block III and the C-130 Hercules, to participate in the show, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Awards for JF-17 and C-130

The JF-17 Block III was awarded the Spirit of the Meet Trophy for its “striking livery and the incredible journey from Pakistan with non-stop air-to-air refuelling,” as reported by PTV.

The aircraft successfully conducted air-to-air refuelling operations en route to the UK with support from a PAF IL-78 refuelling tanker, according to ISPR.

The C-130H Hercules received the Concours d’Elegance Trophy.

“These awards were given in recognition of the aircrafts’ excellent flying and technical skills,” PTV reported. It also noted that the JF-17C Block III is a sign of Pakistan’s “advanced defence technology.”

PTV added, “This success has honoured Pakistan’s aviation sector on an international level.” The recognition is seen as a sign of appreciation for the PAF’s capabilities.

Context of Recent Conflict

In May, during tensions between Pakistan and India, Pakistani forces shot down Indian jets in response to late-night strikes.

A month later, the PAF confirmed that the Kamra-based 15 Squadron was responsible for the engagement.

The incident is now regarded as one of South Asia’s largest air-to-air encounters in over 50 years.

“There is a palpable sense of enthusiasm across the United Kingdom following the recent Pakistan–India conflict, as aviation enthusiasts and defence observers were eagerly looking forward to the arrival of the Pakistan Air Force’s JF-17 Thunder Block III,” the official statement said.

“The aircraft’s combat-proven capabilities and operational excellence have garnered significant global attention, making its appearance at RIAT a highly anticipated highlight in the aerospace and defence community.”

Pakistani Climber Iftikhar Sadpara Dies, Foreign Mountaineer Injured in K2 Avalanche

pakistani-climber-iftikhar-sadpara-dies

An avalanche struck Camp 1 on K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, on Friday, 18 July, at around 2:30 p.m.

The incident resulted in the death of Iftikhar Sadpara and injured a foreign mountaineer, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP).

The avalanche occurred approximately 500 metres above the base camp. Four climbers were caught in its path. Two of them managed to return safely to the Advanced Base Camp, while a foreign climber sustained minor injuries.

Local climber Iftikhar Hussain, a resident of Sadpara, Skardu, lost his life in the avalanche. His body was recovered and brought down to the base camp.

Following the incident, the expedition outfitter submitted a formal request to Major General Irfan Arshad, President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan and Askari Aviation for a mercy helicopter operation to recover the deceased climber.

The request was approved on humanitarian grounds, and his body was airlifted to Skardu.

Irfan Arshad extended his condolences to the climber’s family, friends, and the wider mountaineering community.

He stated that full support would be provided during this difficult time.

Karrar Haidri, Senior Vice President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, also expressed sadness over the incident.

He paid tribute to Iftikhar Hussain’s dedication and contributions to the mountaineering community.

Related Incident in June 2024

In a separate incident in June 2024, one of two Japanese climbers who had gone missing was found dead on Spantik mountain in northern Pakistan.

The climbers, Ryuseki Hiraoka and Atsushi Taaguchi, were trying to reach the 7,027-metre (23,054-foot) summit of the mountain in the Karakoram range when they went missing.

“The dead body of a Japanese climber was found, and a search ongoing for the second climber,” said Wali Ullah Falahi, the deputy commissioner of Shigar district, while speaking to AFP.

The body was found 300 metres (984 feet) below Camp 3, which is located at around 6,200 metres (20,341 feet). This is the area where climbers usually prepare for their final summit attempt.

Did Netflix Use Generative AI for the First Time in One of Its Originals?

did-netflix-use-generative-ai-for-the-first-time-in-one-of-its-originals

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has penetrated virtually every important field of human life. Information technology, education, healthcare, agriculture, and commerce have been reshaped by AI.

A variety of industries, especially Big Tech and automobile companies, have also reaped major benefits from AI. However, Hollywood’s stance on AI has long been ambiguous, until now.

Netflix recently admitted to incorporating generative AI into one of its original productions, highlighting a change in attitude towards artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry.

generative-ai-was-used-inel-eternauta
Generative AI was used in El Eternauta

AI Added Drama In El Eternauta

In the Argentine sci-fi series, El Eternauta (The Eternaut), the creative team partnered with Netflix’s Eyeline Studios to depict a building collapsing in Buenos Aires with the assistance of AI.

This was the first time Generative AI was used for a Netflix production. Speaking on the dramatic scene, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said:

“That VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with traditional visual VFX tools and workflows. And also, the cost of it just wouldn’t have been feasible for a show in that budget.”

Sarandos believes that AI is a beneficial tool for creators, helping them make films and productions better and cheaper. His fellow co-CEO, Greg Peters, also has a positive perspective on the matter.

Peters claims that Netflix may find other ways of leveraging AI to enhance user experience, such as allowing users to use their voice to find their next watch on the platform. He also hinted at smarter advertising methods.

Nonetheless, Netflix’s open admission of incorporating AI into its originals and future directions with the technology highlight its adaptive attitude in an ever-changing world.

So, is AI Taking Jobs in Hollywood?

Much of the resistance and hesitation with incorporating Generative AI in the entertainment industry stems from deeper concerns that it could replace human jobs. However, as in Netflix’s case with El Eternuata shows, it is more of a creative tool.

AI can be used to enable storytelling and enhance dramatic effects, but its potential for replacing human labour is limited for the skilled occupations in the film industry.

As Netflix continues to explore AI-driven tools, its embrace of generative AI suggests that future Originals may increasingly blend human storytelling with cutting-edge technology.

For audiences, this could mean faster production timelines, more innovative visual experiences, and even smarter, more tailored recommendations on the platform.

What is Experience Marketing and Why is it the Next Big Thing?

what-is-experience-marketing-and-why-is-it-the-next-big-thing

We live in an advertisement-saturated society, where popular brands aren’t just selling products, they’re selling lifestyles, dreams, and sometimes even insecurities. Whether you realise it or not, you’re being marketed to almost every minute of the day.

Step outside, and you’re met with towering billboards flashing limited-time offers, celebrity endorsements, or the latest gadget you didn’t know you needed.

And when you look down at your phone? That’s where the real fun begins. Digital ads sneak into your social feeds, pop up between Instagram stories, and even wedge themselves into your YouTube videos. Sometimes, they’re so personalised, it’s like your phone can read your mind.

Let’s not dive into TV commercials. Cricket matches and drama serials are unceremoniously interrupted by these commercials.

All of this has led to significant ad fatigue. Advertisements frustrate consumers, and they may no longer draw sales to the desired extent.

However, brands today are moving towards experience marketing, which is much more effective than traditional advertising methods.

Building a Connection With the Customer

Experience marketing, also called engagement marketing, is a strategy that uses immersive and interactive experiences to enhance consumer engagement and build an emotional connection.

Instead of passively receiving the message, the consumer actively engages with and interacts through physical or digital experiences with the product or service.

These experiences can range from in-person engagements, virtual events, and interactive digital experiences that may include virtual reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) sessions.

A strong emotional bond between the consumer and supplier lies at the core of experiential marketing, which revolves around the five Cs: connection, conversation, collaboration, creativity, and context.

The most important consideration involves evoking a genuine emotional connection in the consumer, so that they “feel” something rather than receive a message.

Secondly, effective engagement marketing needs to elicit conversation and drive discussion. The most successful campaigns require consumer collaboration so that the audience can become part of a cohesive whole.

Creativity is also essential in experience marketing. The audience loves something different, unique, and innovative. The campaign should respect context and make sense to the target audience.

Apple’s “Shot on iPhone Challenge”: An Excellent Example

We all know that the iPhone cameras are in a league of their own. Apple boasting about this in their advertisements would have been mundane and uninspiring.

Instead of telling users about their improved cameras, they launched the #ShotoniPhoneChallenge. All over the world, people submitted their best photos and used the hashtag.

#ShotoniPhoneChallenge Campaign

The campaign allowed existing iPhone users to interact with Apple and become part of a larger community. Others were also drawn to the tech giant’s products due to the fear of missing out (FOMO) on something special.

It was a massive success, as users shared their photos and the word spread to the entire world, driving sales.

In conclusion, the days for traditional marketing are slowly coming to an end. Today, consumers want more, and experience marketing is exactly that.

Food Expiration Dates Don’t Indicate What You Think They Do!

food-expiration-dates-dont-indicate-what-you-think-they-do

I am about to tell you something you may have never heard of…the expiry dates on your food don’t necessarily mean that the food is inedible. In fact, food expiration dates are supposed to indicate the manufacturer’s estimate of when the food will be at its peak quality and flavour, not necessarily when it becomes unsafe to eat.

These dates are not a reflection of food safety for most products, with the exception of baby formula.

What the Date Labels on Your Food Actually Mean

Most of the dates you see on packaging, like “best before”, “sell by”, or “use by”, are not safety indicators. They are quality guidelines. Meaning, the food might not taste as fresh after that date, but it’s still very much edible.

In the US, the marked dates are only intended to indicate quality, and they are not regulated by any federal agency.

“Food date labels are really like the Wild West, there are no standards,” said Jeffrey Costantino, a spokesperson at ReFed, a nonprofit advocacy organisation working to reduce food waste.

Think about that for a second. We’re throwing away milk, cheese, bread, canned goods, and even eggs based on a suggestion, not a hard rule. According to the USDA, over 30% of the food supply in the U.S. goes to waste (only from individual households), and a huge chunk of that is because of misunderstood labelling.

This consumer confusion can take a toll on the climate and on household budgets.

To avoid further confusion, here is what those labels actually mean:

Label Meaning
Best if Used By/Before Indicates when a product will be at its best flavour or quality. Not a purchase or safety date.
Sell-By Informs stores how long to display the product for sale. Used for inventory management.
Use-By The last date recommended for using the product at peak quality. Not a safety date (except on infant formula).
Freeze-By Tells when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. Not a purchase or safety date.

All in all, no universal standard or testing lab is determining when a can of soup goes from fine to fatal. It’s often just a conservative estimate to protect the brand’s reputation, not your health.

In fact, the only product in the U.S. that’s legally required to have an expiration date is baby formula.

Trust Your Senses, Not Just the Sticker

Does this mean that we start ignoring the labels and their dates completely? No.

Sicknesses associated with mould and bacteria found on bad food can be serious, and the fears are warranted, but the labels do little to ward off risks, experts say.

“There is nothing concrete for these dates related to food-borne illness,” said Dr Andrea Glenn, a postdoctoral research fellow and registered dietitian at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

She notes that both a global food system where products travel farther, and food handling practices can play a larger role in food safety.

A study published in 2019 that relied on surveys of more than a thousand people across the US found that 84% have tossed a food because the date marked on the package had passed. This is doing anything but good.

It’s far more useful instead to look for signs of spoilage. Odd or off odour, flavour, colour, or texture are better indicators of potential danger.

Here is how you can identify whether or not a different type of food is unsafe to eat:

Food Signs It’s Unsafe to Eat
Produce Wilty veggies are still safe, but foul odour or mould = bad. Toss fruits and veggies that are brown, slimy, wrinkled, or smell bad.
Milk Sour smell or lumpy texture = bad milk. Use the smell test and observe when pouring. Properly stored milk often lasts past its best-by date.
Eggs Do the water test: sink = good, float = bad (don’t crack it). Vertical but sunk = eat soon. Bad eggs may not smell or look different.
Bread Fuzzy, mouldy spots = toss it. Mouldy bread is unsafe even if other parts look okay. Stale bread is fine, just not tasty.
Uncooked Meat Strong odour, sliminess, or slick texture = don’t eat. Colour changes may be normal (e.g., browning), but a bad smell means it’s likely unsafe.
Fish Fish naturally smell, but slimy + pungent = bad. Always check the texture. For frozen fish, use the same signs once it’s thawed.

Food Waste is a Real Problem; Be Better Now

We’ve been trained to trust labels more than our own common sense. But maybe it’s time we reclaim our judgment and stop treating expiration dates like a ticking time bomb.

Food doesn’t expire on command, and neither should our willingness to be a little smarter about waste.

White House Rejects Reports of Trump’s Visit to Pakistan

white-house-rejects-reports-of-trumps-visit-to-pakistan

The White House dismissed reports that US President Donald Trump will visit Pakistan. A White House official said on Thursday, “A trip to Pakistan has not been scheduled at this time.” This statement followed a Reuters report quoting local news channels saying Trump would visit Islamabad in September and later travel to India.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said he was unaware of Trump’s expected visit. A US embassy spokesperson in Islamabad told Reuters, “We have nothing to announce,” and added that the White House could confirm the president’s schedule.

Anadolu said diplomatic sources also denied claims of Trump’s visit to Pakistan on September 18.

Foreign Ministry sources called the news about Trump’s trip “fake” because the US president will visit the UK between September 17 and 19. A senior ministry official said, “We have no information about any such visit. If there is any such thing, the Foreign Ministry will officially announce that.”

A local news channel earlier reported that Trump was expected in Pakistan on September 18, citing unnamed ministry officials. An international news agency and several media outlets picked up this report. However, the news channel later withdrew the story and apologised for running an “unconfirmed” report.

The official schedule confirms Trump will visit the UK from September 17 to 19. These dates contradict earlier claims about a Pakistan trip.

Officials said they would announce any visit by the US president through proper diplomatic channels. They also urged people not to believe unverified reports in the media.

Cockpit Audio Suggests the Captain Had Cut Fuel in Air India Crash

cockpit-audio-suggests-captain-cut-fuel-in-air-india-crash

A cockpit voice recording from the Air India flight that crashed last month supports the idea that the captain turned off the plane’s fuel supply, according to a source familiar with early findings by US officials.

The crash happened on June 12 in Ahmedabad, India, killing 260 people. A source told Reuters that the first officer, who was flying the Boeing 787, asked the captain why he had moved the fuel switches into a position that stopped fuel from reaching the engines. The first officer also requested that the captain restore the fuel flow.

The source, who chose to remain anonymous because the case is still being investigated, said this was based on a US assessment. However, the information isn’t in a formal report yet, and the investigation is ongoing.

There was no video recording from the cockpit that clearly shows who flipped the fuel switches. However, the cockpit dialogue points toward the captain, based on the early review.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report this on Wednesday about what is now considered the world’s deadliest aviation accident in the last ten years.

India’s AAIB Denies Premature Conclusions

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is in charge of the investigation, stated on Thursday: “Certain sections of the international media are repeatedly attempting to conclude selective and unverified reporting.”

They added that the investigation is still in progress, and it is too early to decide anything for sure.

Most air crashes happen due to multiple factors. As per international rules, a final report is expected within a year of the incident.

The AAIB’s initial report, released on Saturday, said that one pilot asked the other why the fuel had been cut, and the other replied that he didn’t do it.

The report did not confirm which of the two, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal or First Officer Clive Kunder, said which line. Captain Sabharwal had a total flying experience of 15,638 hours, and First Officer Kunder had 3,403 hours of flying time.

According to the report, the fuel switches were turned from “run” to “cutoff” just seconds after takeoff, one after the other. But it didn’t mention how or why they were switched.

Right after the plane lifted off, security camera footage showed that a backup energy device, the ram air turbine, was deployed, a sign that the engines had lost power.

The plane lost thrust and reached a height of 650 feet before it began to descend.

Though the fuel switches were quickly turned back to “run” and the aircraft tried to restart the engines automatically, the jet was already too low and too slow to recover, aviation safety expert John Nance told Reuters.

The report said the aircraft hit trees and a chimney before crashing into a medical college building. Nineteen people on the ground and 241 out of 242 people onboard were killed in the fireball.

Google Pixel 10 Launch Date Confirmed: Here’s What You Need to Know

google-pixel-10-launch-date-confirmed-heres-what-you-need-to-know
Source: Times

Hype is building: Google officially confirmed its big hardware event, Made By Google 2025, will take place on August 20, moving from Mountain View to New York City.

Enthusiasts expect new smartphones, robust AI-powered features, and increased Pixel ecosystem innovation. With speculation about new chipsets, foldables, and camera improvements, here’s what’s most important:

The Big Reveal: Date, Venue & Format

Google formally put the Pixel 10 launch on August 20, 2025, starting at 1 PM ET (10 AM PT) in NYC, with an international livestream anticipated. This change back to New York is a deliberate one.

Following the Pixel 9 launch last August 2024, Google inadvertently created a void around Apple’s September iPhone reveal. This year’s August timing puts Pixel 10 in position as a prime fall contender.

Pre-orders should begin that day with units shipping as soon as August 28, just in time for holiday shoppers.

google-pixel-10-launch-date-confirmed
Google Pixel 10 Launch Date Confirmed

In contrast to past rollouts, the Pixel 10 lineup will consist of four devices:

  • Standard Pixel 10
  • Pixel 10 Pro
  • Pixel 10 Pro XL
  • Brand-new Pixel 10 Pro Fold

They all maintain the same horizontal camera bar but presumably get subtle redesign elements, such as thinner bezels and fresh colours like “Limoncello.” Early CAD drawings point toward shared aesthetic motifs within lineup, with the foldable adding book-like versatility.

Performance & Display Enhancements

Inside lies Google’s initial Tensor G5 processor, constructed on TSMC’s 3 nm process. Rumours point towards a ~25% increase over the Tensor G4, with improved energy efficiency and reduced thermal temperatures.

The devices can possibly come with 12 GB RAM on the base model and as much as 16 GB on Pro models. Displays hold out to 120 Hz refresh, up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, and enhanced low‑PWM dimming.

Along with that, Pixel 10 Pro Fold might bring durability and dust/water resistance up to IP68, a first for folds.

Google’s brand reputation relies on camera performance. Leaks for 2025 indicate that both Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro will use a triple‑64 MP sensor setup; main, ultrawide, and a new 5× telephoto lens.

The affordable model at last gets telephoto, filling a long-standing feature gap. The Pro Fold will reportedly feature similar optics as non-fold models. Rumour have it that the phone has additional computational aids, particularly generative AI tuning, coming along with Android 16.

Ecosystem Expansion: Watch, Buds & Accessories

This rollout won’t be just about phones. Google hints at enhancements for its Pixel Watch 4, which should bring a bigger battery, thicker design, Wear OS 6 with new UI, and improved health metrics.

Audio enthusiasts should expect an affordable Pixel Buds 2a, and accessories such as Pixel Snap, chargers and stands, should help amplify the ecosystem experience.

Pricing leaks confirm steady base pricing: about €899 for Pixel 10, leaping to €1,099 for Pro, €1,299 for Pro XL, and as much as €1,899 for Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

Top-end storage (512 GB, 1 TB) may drive prices even higher. Indian estimates put the foldable at around Rs2,07,500 for 1 TB. Pixel 10 will reportedly hit international markets by August 28, including Pakistan, with regional pricing adjusted for local taxes and duties.

Google’s August 20 event is a turning point. With four models, including a historic foldable, driven by the Tensor G5 and deep ecosystem enhancements, this is potentially the most ambitious Pixel release ever.

Whether you’re a powerhouse camera phone, bold AI feature, or earliest foldable smartphone enthusiast, the Pixel 10 series is about to make waves.

Save the date; this is one release you won’t want to miss.

For the First Time Ever, Astronomers Observe a Solar System Being Born

for-the-first-time-ever-astronomers-observe-a-solar-system-being-born

Astronomers have, for the first time, seen a solar system in its earliest days, catching the moment when planets start to form around an infant star. What makes this achievement so historic is the direct window into the formation of planets in real-time, rather than theoretical phases.

Readers looking for answers now can comprehend how this represents our cosmic beginnings.

The Cosmic Nursery: HOPS‑315

HOPS‑315 is approximately 1,300 light-years from Earth in the constellation Orion. It’s a very young protostar, just 100,000 to 200,000 years old. A spinning disk of gas and dust envelops it. That disk, or protoplanetary disk, is an incubator where planets are formed.

The position of HOPS‑315’s disk means that telescopes can look directly into its central region, the coveted windows where new worlds start to take shape.

the-cosmic-nursery-hops=315
The Cosmic Nursery: HOPS‑315

With ALMA and Webb, researchers detected signatures of crystalline silicates: small, warm solid pieces developing within the disk. These are the first planet-making building blocks, much like material within old meteorites in our own solar system.

Observing this initial “time zero” phase verifies that planetary formation initiates much sooner than was previously witnessed.

Gas Jets and Disk Structures

ALMA’s radio images imaged glowing gas: carbon monoxide created broad lobed winds, and silicon monoxide jets pierced the disk. Such jets are normally used to expel excess matter from new stars and suggest active physical conditions in young planetary cradles.

Meteorites on our planet contain remains of our ancient solar system. Crystalline minerals seen around HOPS‑315 are in the same relative position, about where our asteroid belt is. That similarity provides a real-time comparison to processes of planetary formation that formed Earth and other rocky worlds here.

Technique Synergy: Webb + ALMA

No one telescope alone could capture this breakthrough. JWST explored infrared signatures of solid silicates. ALMA provided submillimeter images of gas flows. Together, their combined information enabled astronomers to accurately determine when and where solids started to condense. This is vital for confirming real-time planet formation.

A Significant Discovery

This’s not a one-off discovery. Trapping the formation of a solar system breaks open a fresh window on planetary origins. It demonstrates that early condensation occurs generally, rather than just for our Sun.

Future observations can now focus on such early systems, tracing when and how rocky worlds form. That helps calculate the probability of Earth-like world formation throughout the galaxy.

This first-ever observation marks a turning point in our understanding of planet formation. From seeing crystalline silicates coalesce to mapping gas jets around HOPS‑315, astronomers have delivered a cosmic baby photo of planetary birth.

We’re not just theorising anymore; we’re watching worlds being born. The real question now: how many more celestial nurseries does the universe hold? And which of those will give rise to life-bearing planets like ours?
