Saboor Aly Reveals Why She Wants To Delay Motherhood

Saboor Aly is of the opinion that life unfolds naturally, including the aspects of marriage and parenthood. She suggests that marital life should be enjoyed rather than assuming it as a contract solely for childbearing and dedicating one’s life to them. In addition, Saboor Aly openly expresses her passion for travel and acknowledges the challenges of traveling with children. Just like how her marriage to Ali Ansari wasn’t planned, she believes children will also come when their time is decided. She talks about all this and more in this interview.

Here’s the video:

However, this does not mean that she avoids her responsibilities as a mother or has no desire to have children. She confirms that she will be a wonderful mother when the right time comes. During her recent appearance on Hina Altaf’s podcast, Saboor Aly talked about her perspective on motherhood and its associated responsibilities. She also hinted at her love for exploring different parts of the world and expressed her desire to travel frequently.

Her enthusiasm for travel is evident in her social media posts, where she frequently shares her adventures in exotic destinations alongside her husband, actor Ali Ansari.

During their conversation, Saboor Aly even recalled the times when her mother would accompany her and her sister and renowned actress Sajal Aly on their journeys. She acknowledged that traveling with children, even just one can be challenging. As a result, she intends to explore various countries and cultures before starting the journey of parenthood herself.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with a woman wanting to enjoy the honeymoon years of her life with her husband, focusing on her relationship, and wanting to travel and see the world. But as we all know  Pakistani fans always have something or the other to say.

Will Pakistan’s New Budget Be People And Business-Friendly?

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 in Pakistan will particularly focus on economic prosperity, business-friendly policies, and public welfare. This comes as the country continues to face challenges such as rising inflation, a balance of payment crisis, and the risk of economic default. Pakistan has been in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for months regarding a bailout deal, but an agreement has not yet been reached.

Details

The IMF’s demands for the bailout package include the removal of subsidies, increased energy prices, a market-based exchange rate, and new taxation measures to generate additional revenue. While Islamabad claims to have fulfilled these demands, the IMF has not released the stalled $1.1 billion funding, which is part of a $6.5 billion Extended Fund Facility agreed upon in 2019. This funding is crucial for Pakistan to access other bilateral and multilateral financing, and the IMF program is set to expire on June 30, 2023.

In his statement, the prime minister emphasized the key elements of the upcoming budget, including economic prosperity, public welfare, and business-friendly policies. To boost growth and create job opportunities, he approved an increase in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) from Rs700 billion to Rs950 billion. The prime minister held a meeting with coalition partners to incorporate their proposals into the budget.

The government aims to ensure that all resources will only be used as necessary because of economic challenges. It plans to allocate a sufficient amount for those affected by last year’s floods and establish a flood response program to address future disasters. Record monsoon rains and glacial melt in Pakistan caused significant damage, affecting 33 million people, resulting in over 1,500 casualties, and causing an estimated $30 billion worth of damage.

Will Things Get Better?

Economists have expressed concerns about Pakistan’s budget, highlighting that the net federal receipts are insufficient to cover even the interest payments. The government relies on domestic and foreign loans to meet its expenditures. They emphasize the need for necessary expenditure and tax reforms to address the country’s fiscal deficit and debt sustainability.

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has also recommended tax reforms and the addition of new taxpayers to boost revenue. They argue that the current taxation system, heavily reliant on indirect taxation and surcharges, is detrimental to the economy. The FPCCI sees the upcoming federal budget as an opportunity to introduce measures and policies that support industrial growth, import substitution, and the revival of struggling businesses.

The budget aims to promote industrialization, create wealth, reduce the trade deficit, and generate employment opportunities. The government and the business community hope to achieve sustainable foreign exchange reserves by strengthening various industrial sectors.

Apple has announced its highly anticipated augmented reality (AR) headset, the Vision Pro. The headset is set to hit the market early next year and is priced at $3,499.

The Vision Pro is a groundbreaking innovation that seamlessly merges the real and digital worlds. It features a sleek, ski-goggle design and boasts an array of impressive features and capabilities.

One of the distinguishing features of the Vision Pro is its ability to switch between augmented and full virtual reality. This flexibility allows users to experience a wide range of immersive digital environments.

The headset is controlled using a combination of eye, hand, and voice commands, eliminating the need for physical controllers. Apple’s visionOS operating system enables users to navigate through rows of app icons simply by looking at them. Tapping and flicking gestures enable selection and scrolling, while voice commands offer a hands-free alternative. The headset is also compatible with Bluetooth accessories, such as the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, and supports integration with Mac computers.

State of the art design

The design of the Vision Pro is both elegant and functional. The glass front and aluminum frame house an array of sensors and cameras, providing users with a high-quality visual experience. The headset features a 4K display for each eye, ensuring sharp and vibrant imagery. Additionally, the headset mask, known as the “Light Seal,” and the ribbed “Head Band” are adjustable and designed to fit a variety of face shapes and head sizes. Apple has collaborated with Zeiss to create custom optical inserts for those who wear glasses, ensuring optimal visual clarity.

One notable aspect of the Vision Pro is its ability to maintain a sense of connection with the surrounding environment. The device uses the EyeSight system to display the user’s eyes, and in full VR mode, a glowing screen obscures the eyes to indicate unavailability. The headset also generates a realistic digital avatar by scanning the user’s face, further enhancing the immersive experience. Through passthrough video, users can view the real world in full color while projecting 3D objects into their surroundings.

WWDC23 highlights - Apple

Creative features

The Vision Pro offers a range of interactive features for remote communication. Spatial audio allows users to arrange FaceTime participants as “video tiles” in a virtual room, creating a more engaging and immersive experience. Additionally, users can capture and relive 180-degree video using the integrated 3D camera, further expanding the possibilities for content creation and sharing. Apple has also secured partnerships with major content providers, such as Disney, ensuring a diverse selection of premium TV and Arcade content for users to enjoy.

Although the Vision Pro has faced years of development and delays, industry insiders have expressed excitement and optimism about its potential. As Apple’s foray into the AR headset market, it aims to compete with Meta (formerly Facebook Reality Labs). Meta’s Quest 2 headset has enjoyed success in the gaming sector, while their Quest Pro has received mixed reviews as a general-purpose device. With its advanced features, seamless integration with Apple’s ecosystem, and strong emphasis on user experience, the Vision Pro sets itself up as a compelling contender in the growing AR market.

As the release of Apple Vision Pro draws nearer, anticipation builds for the future of augmented reality and the impact it will have on our daily lives. The device represents a significant step forward in blending the digital and physical worlds, offering users a new level of immersive and interactive experiences.

BRT Shutdown Threatens Pakistan’s Transportation Future

BRT Shutdown Threatens Pakistan's Transportation Future
Source: Startup Business

The Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services, operated by a private company, are at risk of being shut down starting from Wednesday, June 7. This decision comes as a result of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government’s failure to release payments totaling over Rs750 million to the operator.

Fincancial restraints leads to trouble

In a letter sent on June 3, the operator warned the provincial authorities that if the outstanding amount of Rs754 million was not paid by Monday, June 6, they would have no choice but to halt the services. The letter highlighted that the operator had been experiencing delays in receiving payments for the past three to four months, despite the availability of funds in TransPeshawar’s (TPC) bank account.

Closure of Peshawar BRT imminent - Chitral Today
Source: Chitral Aj

The operator explained in the letter that the delayed payments had a negative impact on operational expenses, such as the procurement of diesel, lubricants, parts, electricity, and salaries required for the BRT Peshawar operation.

The operator initially informed the government that it would continue to run the service until Tuesday. However, if the overdue payment of PKR 754 million was not released by Monday, they would be compelled to suspend the BRT Peshawar operation starting from Wednesday, June 7, due to the financial strain caused by non-payment.

Why was the payment delayed?

The payment delay stems from the provincial government’s decision to stop the payments to the operator after the lease agreement for the Peshawar terminal expired in October 2022. The government has been withholding the dues as the company has yet to vacate the terminal.

The potential shutdown of the BRT services in Peshawar raises concerns about the impact on daily commuters who rely on this efficient mode of transportation. The BRT system was implemented with the aim of easing congestion and improving public transportation in the city. However, the ongoing dispute between the operator and the government over the lease agreement has resulted in a financial stalemate, jeopardizing the continuation of the services.

Public grieves

The closure of the BRT services would not only inconvenience passengers but also undermine the government’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation solutions and reduce traffic congestion. It is crucial for both parties to resolve the payment dispute promptly to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the BRT system.

Source: Business recorder

As Wednesday approaches, stakeholders will closely monitor the situation, hoping for a resolution that allows the BRT services to continue without disruption. The provincial government and the operator must engage in constructive dialogue to find a mutually beneficial solution that prioritizes the interests of the public and ensures the long-term viability of the BRT Peshawar system.

Here are some of the possible solutions to the payment dispute:

  • The provincial government could release the outstanding payments to the operator.
  • The operator could vacate the Peshawar terminal in exchange for the outstanding payments.
  • The two parties could reach a mutually beneficial agreement that addresses the concerns of both parties.

The future of the BRT system in Peshawar depends on the resolution of the payment dispute. The provincial government and the operator must engage in constructive dialogue to find a solution that prioritizes the interests of the public and ensures the long-term viability of the BRT Peshawar system.

Production Halted Again As Toyota Indus Motor Faces Shutdown

In another blow to the already troubled auto sector, Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC) announced a series of non-production days (NPDs) in June. The company, in an official notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), announced inventory shortage as the primary reason for the temporary shutdown of its car assembly plant. The production halt is scheduled from June 3 to June 8, 2023.

Adding to the troubles of the industry, there are reports that the federal government is considering imposing a Withholding Tax (WHT) on domestically produced vehicles based on invoice price instead of engine capacity, in the upcoming budget. This potential policy change has raised concerns within the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), which has warned of severe consequences for the already struggling auto industry.

PAMA has expressed its apprehensions in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), highlighting that altering the basis of WHT will adversely impact the sales of locally-assembled cars. The association has urged the board to reconsider this proposal, as it would inevitably lead to an increase in retail prices. Furthermore, PAMA has also requested a reduction in the existing engine-based WHT on vehicles.

Automakers are growing increasingly anxious as the ongoing operational challenges pose a significant threat to their sustainability. However, the government has yet to respond to the plea for assistance from the auto sector. The industry awaits a concrete response from the authorities, hoping for measures that would alleviate their concerns and support their survival.

Cancer Patients Can Live With This Drug, Study

Around 1.8 million people die from lung cancer each year, making it the most common type of cancer in the world. The American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (Asco) annual meeting in Chicago featured the presentation of the late-stage study’s findings, which were led by Yale University.

According to research presented at the largest cancer conference in the world, using the medicine osimertinib after surgery significantly lowered patients’ risk of death by 51%.

The drug created by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca targets a specific subtype of lung cancer in patients with so-called non-small cell cancer, the most prevalent subtype, and exhibiting a specific subtype of mutation.

Breakthrough In Cancer Treatment

The trial examined whether the medication could benefit people with non-small cell lung cancer, the most prevalent kind of the disease, and included participants aged 30 to 86 in 26 countries.

“Thirty years ago, there was nothing we could do for these patients,” said Dr. Roy Herbst, the deputy director of Yale Cancer Center and lead author of the study. “Now we have this potent drug.”

“Fifty percent is a big deal in any disease, but certainly in a disease like lung cancer, which has typically been very resistant to therapies.”

According to the trial results, osimertinib, also marketed under the brand name Tagrisso and manufactured by AstraZeneca, significantly lowered the chance of death in lung cancer patients receiving treatment following surgery. “Adjuvant osimertinib demonstrated an unprecedented, highly statistically significant and clinically meaningful overall survival benefit in patients,” the paper stated.

In comparison to patients given a placebo, 88% of patients who took the daily medication after having their tumor removed were still alive after five years. Overall, those who received osimertinib had a 51% lower risk of dying than those who received a placebo.

It is hard to convey how important this finding is and how long it’s taken to get here,” said Dr. Nathan Pennell, an Asco expert who was not involved with the study. “This shows an unequivocal, highly significant improvement in survival.”

Trashit Transforming Waste Management In Pakistan: The Power Of Composting

Did you know how much food wastage you generate? Or what amount of food is being wasted in Pakistan and how much does it cost? According to a report by the Ministry of National Food Security & Research, approximately 26 percent of the food produced in our country is discarded every year. To put this into perspective, this wastage equates to a staggering $4 billion in monetary value. It’s an astonishing figure that highlights the significant economic impact of this issue.

An effective solution to address this problem is through the practice of composting. In simpler terms, composting involves the conversion of food waste into nutrient-rich compost, which can be used as a natural fertilizer for plants. By implementing composting practices, not only can we enhance soil quality, but we can also establish a more streamlined and sustainable waste management system in Pakistan.

Today on World Environment Day which is celebrated on June 5 worldwide, we reached out to a woman entrepreneur who in the pursuit of addressing the food waste challenge showcased a visionary mindset and took action to make a significant impact. Anusha Fatima, despite her background in computer science, made the bold decision to establish an organization dedicated to revolutionizing composting practices. Her startup, TrashIt, has emerged as a catalyst for change in waste management and has sparked a movement toward transforming Pakistan into an environmentally-friendly state.

Birth of TrashIt

Anusha’s journey toward making a difference in waste management began in 2017 when her interest in entrepreneurship was sparked during her university studies. It was during a course called Design Thinking that she had the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of Karachi’s city management system. This experience opened her eyes to the magnitude of the food waste problem and highlighted the inadequacies in waste management practices.

Reflecting on her realization, Anusha shared, “Before encountering the impact of wastage on our society, I was immune like everyone else and never paid attention to it. But when I saw the flaw of waste management, I decided to become a problem solver rather than just complaining about it.”

During her exploration of various methodologies, Anusha delved deep into the practice of composting, developing a strong understanding of its principles. It was during this time that she conceived the idea of TrashIt, a venture aimed at connecting individuals who shared her vision for sustainable waste management. Anusha actively sought opportunities to expand her knowledge and network, participating in business incubator programs and connecting with like-minded individuals.

Serendipitously, Anusha had the fortune of attending a workshop conducted by Tofiq Pasha, where the focus was on kitchen gardening and composting. “Fortunately, around that time, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop by Tofiq Pasha, where I learned about kitchen gardening and composting through hands-on training and implemented these practices using my own household waste,” recalled Anusha reflecting on this formative experience.

Role of SC Women In Tech

As TrashIt began to gain traction and make a notable impact, Anusha and her team discovered the Standard Chartered Women in Tech program. This discovery proved to be a pivotal moment that set the stage for TrashIt’s success and further propelled its mission forward.

Anusha was lucky to be part of the inaugural batch of the Standard Chartered Women in Tech program in 2019. Looking back on those times, she emphasized the significant impact the program had on her entrepreneurial journey. The program offered a comprehensive learning experience, equipping Anusha with knowledge in crucial areas such as marketing, finance, prototyping, and achieving product-market fit.

As the Covid-19 pandemic created unprecedented uncertainty and disruptions, Anusha acknowledged the SCWIT’s resilience in ensuring its continuation. “During the Covid-19 pandemic, when everything seemed unpredictable, the SCWIT program stood by us and kept the program running. Their unwavering support played a crucial role in helping us navigate through challenging circumstances and achieve our milestones,” she shared.

Anusha Fatima expressed her admiration for the community of women entrepreneurs brought together under the umbrella of the SCWIT. Witnessing this collective support and connection among fellow women entrepreneurs was a source of inspiration and commendation for her. As Anusha’s knowledge and confidence grew, so did the momentum of TrashIt, the venture she spearheaded.

In the initial stages, the TrashIt team embarked on a journey of experimentation. They explored various methods of collecting organic waste and implementing effective composting techniques. Over time, through dedication and perseverance, they successfully cracked the code and developed expertise in composting. Presently, TrashIt is capable of composting approximately 500kg of organic waste. Beyond composting, the visionary startup also offers waste management and composting solutions to different companies, extending its impact beyond its own operations.

Anusha firmly believes that incubator programs like the SCWIT play a vital role in providing credibility and support to new startups. She recognizes the significant contribution in the growth and success of TrashIt.

Next Goal: Environment Sustainability

We are living in a time where saving the earth is not just a slogan but also a need of the hour. According to Anusha, the corporate sector is taking the matter seriously and discussing different approaches to combat 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming & CO2 emission.

“We need more creative minds and solutions on the local level as the future of environmental startups is very bright. These ideas would then translate into global-level organizations,” explained Anusha.

As we talked about the future of environmental startups, Anusha also discussed what TrashIt has to offer for upcoming times. She shared that TrashIt is set to make a bigger impact as they plan to take it to other major cities in Pakistan. As the company is leading in composting and soil health, the whole team aims to groom young talent that would lead the mission of climate safety.

To ensure the reliability and performance of Pangu Chat, Huawei conducted rigorous testing using a large-scale Pangu cloud model with an impressive 100 billion parameters. Over the course of two months, more than 2000 Huawei Ascend 910 chipsets were utilized for data training purposes. Such extensive testing demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to delivering a high-quality AI product.

High power required for Pangu Chat

Additionally, industry analysts reveal that the development of large-scale models incurs substantial computing power costs. In the case of Pangu Chat, the training process required over 4000 GPU/TPU cards, resulting in a computing power cost of approximately 960 million yuan over three years.

The specifications of Huawei’s Pangu model indicate that the new Pangu-E large model is capable of generating at least 1.085 trillion parameters, equivalent to the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4. Developed using the MindSpore framework, this model can generate dialogues comparable to GPT-3.5.

The Pangu model was initially launched in 2021, with version 2.0 released in April 2022. The platform currently encompasses Natural Language Processing (NLP) large models, Computer Vision (CV) large models, and Meteorological models. Huawei’s Pangu series distinguishes itself by being the first Chinese pre-training large model with over 100 billion parameters and a CV large model with 3 billion parameters.
