PIA Pilot Saves Flight From Crashing!

Pakistan International Airlines has always been in the news for the wrong reasons.Recently the national carrier announced closing down of various international destinations including the iconic New York and Europe destinations.

The news was met with disappointment from people who used the service. PIA has been undergoing huge financial losses and the rapid decline has led to the closure of the foreign routes. However, this time around PIA is making the rounds on social media for their brave pilots who saved the lives of those on board flight, PK 536 on Monday.

Passengers who were onboard the flight took to the internet and shared their experience of the turbulence filled flight that passed through a life-threatening thunderstorm over Sukkur region. The pilots of the PK 536, Amjed Mehboob and Osman Hashim Baloch chartered the flight through horrible weather and the passengers reached Karachi safe and sound.

iPhone X Makes it to Time Magazine’s ’25 Best Inventions of 2017′

Time Magazine released a list of its ’25 Best Inventions of 2017′ and iPhone X made it despite being a new flagship because of its unique face ID and display.

Other inventions among list included sideways moving elevators, self-heating mugs, hijab that empowers Muslim athletes, and even Tesla self-driving car. Nintendo and fidget spinners also ranked in the list of 25 best inventions of 2017.

Apple SVP of hardware engineering Dan Ricco, who said “I look at the design as something we really wanted to do since day one,” which the article then goes on to comment “It’s easy to see why.”

The initial highlights of the article reference the sophistication of the iPhone X, with its OLED screen “that stretches from edge to edge,” and referencing the A11 Bionic Chip and its Neural engine as the “processor optimized for augmented reality.”

The TrueDepth array and Apple’s Face ID system, the “camera smart enough to allow users to unlock the phone with their face,” is also highlighted in the opening paragraph.

The search engine has introduced a new update in its job search tab, ‘Google for Jobs’, where people can filter out the jobs according to the salaries and location.

The update brings the best of the jobs for the people on the basis of their desired salary and location. This happened back in May 2017, and ever since, millions of people have been benefited with it.

The salary scale will be based on detailed job titles, specifications, locations, the employers, and will be drawn from sources like Glassdoor, PayScale, LinkedIn, and Paysa etc.

To ensure a bright future for its users, Google for Jobs will display jobs up to 200 miles away from the user. Apart from this, it will also assist you to apply for a job by offering you multiple places to fill in your application, making it an all-in-one job search engine.

Malala Yousafzai on Harper Bazaar’s ‘150 Visionary Women’ List

On its 150th anniversary, Harper’s Bazaar UK issued a list celebrating the most influential 150 female leaders in the UK.”

As reported by the Magazine:

“each of the individuals on the list has proved herself to be forward-thinking, high-achieving and an inspirational role model to women everywhere.”

And guess what? Malala Yousafzai has made it to this list.

The youngest Nobel Prize winner, and a female education activist, Malala has been honored this rank based on her efforts for the Syrian refugees and for the female who are deprived of education. The highly-talented girl opened a school for Syrian refugee girls in Lebanon.

Twitteratis congratulated Malala on her new achievement!

Other women of prominence who have also been listed are Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge), Victoria Beckham and Kate Winslet.

Malala is currently pursuing her PPE degree (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics) at Oxford University and is studying for the PPE degree.

The popular eatery, Nando’s is known for its witty ads based on the ongoing situation in the country, be it political or entertainment related, their comebacks are truly controversial just like their statements!

However, this time around a recent post by Nando’s has created an outrage on social media. It seems like people did not find it the least bit funny when Nandos decided to poke fun at the iconic Pakistani diva, Meeraji.

The post talks about the recent crooning session Meera had on a television show. She was seen singing her heart out on “My heart will go on” originally sung by the melodious Celine Dion for the legendary movie Titanic.

Nandos mentions in their post addressed to the veteran Lollywood actress,

“Meera Jee, please leave the crowing to our chickens!”

The text is pasted over a scene similar to the Titanic signifying the famous singing session Meera had just a few days ago that had created a buzz on social media.

Almost everyone criticised this post by the popular eatery, while some spoke about the missing ethics, others believed it was downright rude to take a dig at Meera on her singing!

PIA to Sell Roosevelt Hotel to Settle Debts!

The Pakistani national carrier, PIA has been in the news recently trying to cut off its loss-making divisions such as closing down some popular international routes in order to make the airline financially stable again.

However, the next step it has decided to take is to sell off some of its critical assets like the ‘Roosevelt Hotel’ to gain financial stability. The hotel is situated in the heart of Midtown Manhattan on Madison Avenue. The hotel has 1,015 rooms, including 52 suites; some of the suites are among the most luxurious in Manhattan. Last year, the hotel was valued at a whopping $1 billion.

The current debts of PIA which contribute to 1.5% of the country’s GDP have now amounted to a total of Rs. 352 billion putting a stop to various operations and services. A business plan has been presented to the federal government by Dr. Musharraf Rasool Cyan, the CEO of PIA.

The plan suggests that the government pick up debt servicing cost of Rs. 59.3 billion for 2018 and Rs. 49.9 billion for 2019. The CEO has mentioned that these debts will allow the entity to make improvements in the next two years.

PIA has mentioned in the report that they would bear the debt-servicing cost for the year 2020, 2021 and 2022 without external support. Mr. Cyan also spoke about PIA’s fleet increasing from 36 to 44 by 2022, however, they will terminate 5 ATR aircrafts by the year 2022.

The closing down of various departments in PIA will not only result in unemployment as PIA has a vast number of people on their payroll but passengers would no longer be able to haul direct flights to international destinations which other domestic airline companies do not offer at the moment.

Marriott Hotel Islamabad’s Entrance Demolished by CDA!

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has spoken up and finally taken action against the encroachments established by the five-star hotel, Marriott Hotel in Islamabad and has also sealed 9 other high-rise buildings in the city.

The CDA targeted the encroachments by the hotel on a plot which measures 3.75 acres of land. The plot which was taken over by Marriott is public property and such construction on it is illegal. The area occupied by Marriott was being used for ‘security’ purposes even though it is state owned.

The operation was conducted in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner ICT, the Islamabad Police was also present in order to deal with any situation that could occur. A bulldozer was brought in yesterday to remove the encroachments surrounding the Marriot Hotel situated in the Red Zone.

The bulldozer demolished two permanent sheds that were constructed illegally at the entrance, two huge temporary sheds, two security cabins and barrier posts and poles. All the construction removed were allegedly on an illegal property.

This Pakistani College is Selling Fake Degrees to Students

Seems like the business of fake degrees is in full spring in Pakistan. According to latest updates, a college in Islamabad has kickstarted trading of counterfeit degrees and its something all academic authorities, students and even parents should be aware of!

HEC Exposed Islamabad Law College

The head of the Higher Education Commission (HEC)  Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad exposed Islamabad Law College of giving fake degrees to the students.

The matter was addressed in a meeting of Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training, held under the chairmanship of Senator Rahila Magsi. The aim was to find a solution to the college’s affiliation with Islamia University Bahawalpur.

A case was brought in front of the panel in which the student of Islamabad Law College, Muhammad Akmal, told the committee that back in 2015 he took admission in the college and paid Rs 60,000 as a fee.

Apparently, he was told by the college that the institution is affiliated with Islamia University Bahawalpur.

After appearing in examinations of part 1, Akmal was informed that Islamia University had ended its affiliation with the Law College.

The HEC Chairman has issued a warning to the college and has allotted a target of months to the college authorities to resolve affiliation issues.

What is more, the chairman informed the Senate that all those students who are unable to bribe well-reputed institutions then opt for fake degrees form Islamabad Law College and various other illegal institutes.

It is crucial that relevant authorities take strict measures against these corrupt practices prevailing in the education sector and nip the evil in the bud.

The renovation of the general enclosure is under-way with roof of the stands being fixed

The improvement of sewerage system has also been started.

In a statement to the press, Sethi revealed:

“We are considering to equip the stadium with all modern facilities ahead of the much awaited matches and return of cricket in Karachi. We have a very short time for the renovation work of the stadium”

OGRA to Suspend License of Major Oil Companies in Pakistan?

The ongoing oil companies dispute with automobile giant Honda is now undergoing another issue as OGRA Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority has decided to conduct the quality check of POL products.

Honda had previously filed a complaint claiming the high amount of Manganese in fuel supplied by Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Shell and Total are what caused their car engines to catch fire. The claims had been made by the company after they collected samples and results were collected.

However, it has now been reported according to sources that OGRA may allegedly suspend the licenses of the oil marketing companies that are selling substandard quality petrol to customers. Apart from license suspension, the companies could also be fined with a heavy penalty.

The Oil regulatory body received a report from the committee that is investigating the oil companies. Gasoline samples from various petrol pumps were received which were tested by the Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan.

The main aim of the committee was to identify whether the claim made by Honda on the Oil companies was true. OGRA has now received the report and will act as per the committee’s guidance.

The oil companies being investigated by OGRA have been kept under wraps and the names have not been made public as yet.

Previously in 2011, OGRA had suspended the licenses of 7 Oil and Marketing Companies and imposed a Rs. 3 Million fine on each firm.

The 7 Oil Companies that were included in the 2011 List were: 

  1. Askar
  2. Hascol
  3. Admore
  4. OOTCL
  5. Bakri
  6. Byco
  7. Total

These companies were fined due to a breach of license and conditions not met which required maintaining a fuel stock for 20 days.

Pakistan Ranked ‘Not Free’ for 6th Consecutive Year!

Other than food and cricket, Pakistanis are addicted to the internet. A major life of their daily routine is spent surfing the web and it is no secret that we have a high number of internet users in the world.

According to a recent report released by the  Freedom House, a US state-funded nonprofit organization, Pakistan has been ranked amongst the worst nations for internet freedom.

The report ranked countries on a 100-point scale based on three broad categories:

  1. obstacles to access,
  2. limits on content
  3. violations of user rights.

This is not the first time Pakistan received a poor ranking in the report by Freedom House. For six consecutive years, the state has been deemed “Not Free” and bagged the 71st spot out of 100 in the list.

This clearly implies that Pakistan allows only 29% freedom on the internet. 

The report was taken in the account the abduction, enforced disappearance and detention of five secularist bloggers known for criticizing the authorities in Pakistan.

Four among them were released after months of detention, while one remains still missing. One of the released bloggers later openly held government institutions responsible for his detention and torture.

Meanwhile, the internet freedom in India remained stable in 2017

Traffic Jam at Drigh Road to Continue Till 3 Months

One of the busiest roads of Karachi, Drigh Road, has again been shut down! The reason for this is the maintenance work going on at the Rashid Minhas Flyover.

The maintenance work started yesterday, 12th November 2017. Since then, the traffic system for the entire metropolitan city has been disturbed.

Now according to latest update, the new structure will take at least three months to complete

Previously, the Drigh Road Underpass was under construction in the first and the second quarter of this year and was under maintenance in the third quarter, which greatly affected the flow of traffic on this route.

Now, once again, the citizens of Karachi are facing great traffic jams because of the maintenance work. Bumper to bumper traffic has caused people to stand in the chaos for hours.

Alternative Routes:

Route 1:

Due to the repairing work at Rashid Minhas Flyover on the Drigh Road, the road that joins Shahrah-e-Faisal from the right has been closed down. People who wish to travel on this route can now go to Natha Khan Road, take the Star Gate route and then join the Shahrah-e-Faisal Road.

Route 2:

Another alternative can be going right from the Millennium mall road to Karsaz, joining Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Route 3:

Similarly, those who are traveling through the Star Gate from Malir towards Rashid-e-Mashas Road can join the Rashid Minhas Road from the right side under the bridge.

Car Sales Witnessed Rise by 46% in 2017

Once again, car fanatics prove that Pakistanis love automobiles as much as food and the stats prove this!

October 2017 is reported to be the highest ever recorded sales month for the auto sector, with a comparative growth of 46% from October 2016.

The numbers were issued by Pakistan Automotive Association, which includes figures for LCVs and cars, total 23,341 units were sold, where the figure was 15,998 in October’16.

Vespa’s First Electric Scooter is Coming in 2018!

Coming to the fiscal year from July-October 2017, the sales increased by 32% with the selling of  83,810 units compared with 63633 units of the same period preceding year.

Pak Suzuki Motor Company, in particular, remained the highest selling auto company with volumes depicting 53 percent to 13714 units in October 2017 compared with October 2016.

During this period, Wagon-R sales increased by 141% with 3,478 units sold, followed by Suzuki Mehran sales which reached the highest-ever monthly sale of 4,355 units, showing an increase of demand by 41%.

Other popular cars sold include Honda’s BR-V, which also saw an increase in demand and sales (1,091 units [introduced in Apr-17]) as well as Honda Civic and City, which increased by 14%.

On the other hand, Indus Motor Company (Toyota) witnessed an increase in unit sales by double the number of Honda, 28%, as Fortuner and Hilux demands increase, Corolla raising by 7% in sales.

Punjab Job Portal Announces Huge Number of Vacancies, Apply Now!

With an increasing number of graduates passing out every year, people are always on the lookout for jobs. Keeping this in mind, the Punjab Job Portal has recently registered 333 departments of the Punjab government which has opened up 11,175 vacancies.

143 categories of job postings are available on the Punjab job portal posted by various provincial departments.

The new portal was developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) was launched in August 2017. A progress meeting was held on Tuesday which was attended by the Chairman, Dr. Umar Saif, Vice Chancellor of Information Technology University Punjab, Chairman PITB and Advisor to the Chief Minister.

Dr. Umar Saif mentioned that the job portal was to help departments hire suitable people and provide opportunities to those candidates who wish to apply for the desired vacancies. This portal has helped eliminate the middleman as people would now apply for the positions directly without visiting departments physically.

Candidates can now apply to all provincial government jobs from this portal and because details are provided for eligibility criteria on the various vacancies, the applicants can check what vacancy suits them best.

Awami Sawari: A New Ride-Hailer In Town

A new ride-hailing application has just hit the market. The newly launched “Awami Sawari” is trying to mark its spot in the highly competitive world where Uber and Careem which have become the popular method of transportation nowadays.

The service, Awami Sawari, has been launched by the Awami Rickshaw Union (ARU), and its direct competitors are Careem’s Tez Rickshaw and UberAuto, which have perfectly captured the market.

The ARU stated that ever since the launch of these taxi-hailing services, the business of auto-rickshaw drivers has been greatly affected, therefore they decided to launch their own app. About 30%-40% business has been affected by each rickshaw driver.

ARU President, Majeed Ghauri, said that 500 rickshaw drivers have registered with the application. The union is providing rickshaw drivers with Android smartphones too, to make this venture successful. The rickshaw drivers are now asking their passengers to install the application and call a rickshaw at their doorstep anywhere and anytime.

Another incentive given to the rickshaw drivers is that Awami Sawari will take 20% commission from Rickshaw drivers and will reward Rs.4000 per week to Rickshaw drivers on completing 60 rides per week.

Majeed also enhanced on the fact that this is solely a local project initiated by a local union, and no foreign investment is involved in it. The base tariff for Awami Sawari is Rs.48 and the cost per kilometer is Rs. 9.

He further added:

Some of our friends, who have a tech background, helped us in developing the mobile application platform for rickshaw drivers and commuters. The application has been tested among a select group of users and all bugs have been fixed before the launch.

We are not against multinational ride-hailing services operating in different cities but we are against the uneven playing field. The rickshaw drivers are paying for vehicle fitness certificates, traffic police challans, the fines imposed by the environment department and several other such taxes and penalties, while these ride-hailing services are snatching passengers from rickshaw drivers.

Respecting this view, the new ride-hailing app will face a lot of competition from the current market leaders, yet the chances are that we might see more innovation in these services.
